West Point's Cadet Chapel hosts first same-sex wedding

Brides Penelope Gnesin, seated, and Brenda Sue Fulton, a West Point graduate, hold hands during their wedding, Saturday at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

Cadet Chapel, the landmark Gothic church that is a center for spiritual life at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, was hosting its first same-sex wedding Saturday.

Penelope Gnesin and Brenda Sue Fulton, a West Point graduate, were exchanging vows in the regal church in an afternoon ceremony attended by around 250 guests and conducted by a senior Army chaplain.

The two have been together for 17 years. They had a civil commitment ceremony that didn't carry any legal force in 1999 but had longed hoped to formally tie the knot. The way was cleared last year, when New York legalized same-sex marriage and President Barack Obama lifted the "Don't ask, don't tell," policy prohibiting openly gay people from serving in the military.

The brides both live in New Jersey and would have preferred to have the wedding there, but the state doesn't allow gay marriage.

"We just couldn't wait any longer," Fulton told The Associated Press in a phone interview Saturday. They wanted to get married quickly also because Gnesim, 52, is a breast cancer survivor with multiple sclerosis, USA Today reported.

Cadet Chapel, Fulton said, was a more-than-adequate second choice.

"It has a tremendous history, and it is beautiful. That's where I first heard and said the cadet prayer," Fulton said, referring to the invocation that says, "Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never to be content with a half-truth when the whole can be won."

The ceremony will be the second same-sex wedding at West Point. Last weekend, two of Fulton's friends, a young lieutenant and her partner, got married in another campus landmark, the small Old Cadet Chapel in West Point's cemetery.

Fulton has campaigned against the ban on gays in the military as a board member of two groups representing gay and lesbian servicemen and servicewomen. She graduated in 1980 in the first West Point class to include women.

“I was just a small town kid awed by West point and I loved the Army. I was so proud that we created a legacy that opened doors for so many young women leaders to serve and make our army stronger,” Fulton said in a statement posted to YouTube. “Gay and lesbian soldiers no longer have to hide their lives and their families – makes them stronger, makes our army stronger, makes our military stronger.”

Fulton said the only hassle involved in arranging her ceremony came when she was initially told that none of West Point's chaplains were authorized by their denominations to perform same-sex weddings.

Luckily, she said, they were able to call on a friend, Army Chaplain Col. J. Wesley Smith. He is the senior Army chaplain at Dover Air Force Base, where he presides over the solemn ceremonies held when the bodies of soldiers killed in action oversees return to U.S. soil.

The couple planned on adding other military trappings to their wedding, including a tradition called the saber arch, where officers or cadets hold their swords aloft over the newlyweds as they emerge from the church.

Sue Fulton, who married Saturday at West Point's historic Cadet Chapel, discusses the significance of the end of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy in the military.

So, being a straight man myself I definitely understand the uncomfortable feeling around gay people and so forth. However, I really don't get the whole animosity towards people who clearly are making personal choices in their own lives. What is it to other people? You can't really use the procreation argument since then you would say women who can't have children shouldn't get married. Please explain to me why you care so much about what two consenting adults do with their own lives.

you said it perfectly when you stated "what two consenting adults do with THEIR OWN lives."

but yet i cant watch tv without seeing the crap, my kids cant get an education without being indoctrinated by the crap and you wonder why straight people are sick of it all.

if its truly THEIR OWN lives, then get out of my living room when im watching tv and stay the hell out of my children's class room.

You are talking about public space. First I don't recall ever being "indoctrinated" in school. I think that is something you want to be true to strengthen your argument. Second, There are over 250 channels on TV, not all of them are geared toward you, if you don't like it change the channel? How about the people that don't want NASCAR on TV, or people that don't want Family Guy on TV, or people who don't want a Christian Channel? Can we get rid of all those too? I'm sick of a lot of things, I'm sick of fat chicks wearing clothes that are too small for them. I'm sick of donald trump on TV, I'm sick of American Idol, I'm sick of religious folk who impose themselves on other people. But you know what? I don't own this counrty, I contribute to it like everyone else. If you want your kids education to be more christian then put them in a christian school.

think about what you said. you dont recall being indoctrinated. your 28 dude. my 12 yr old is having to deal with crap today in school. as for me wanting my kids having a christian education...hmmmm, they cant have that in a public school can they, because people like you want the separation of church and state inforced, but its perfectly ok for teachers and students alike pushing gay life to others students and we straight parents are told to deal with it. as for tv...get their own cheannel, what an idea...talk with opra and her OWN network. if i want to watch gays then i will turn to that channel....but please remember what you first said....its THEIR OWN lives, so they dont need to make it a part of mine.

You don't want separation of church and state? You want your kids reading the Quran? Or Scientology books? Clearly if you teach christianity in public schools you have to teach the other religions as well. I know many many many teachers and none of them the ever push gay life on anyone. What is the point? And in what classroom are they teaching "gay"? The science class? History? I'm pretty sure if they were trying to "push" gay on people in public schools there would of course be a lawsuit, anytime a parent is offended it is brought to the courts. But i'm really at a loss for what they would actually be teaching them and in what classroom. There are always going to be gay people, if he has fellow students that are gay he doesn't have to talk to them or associate with them if he doesn't want to. I think every class has had gay kids. Less competition for the girls right?

this isnt about me wanting or not wanting separation of church and state, but im perfectly fine with religion taught in school, but all religions not just one. as this country of our have has people from all walks of life with different religious beliefs. but this is really about people like yourself wanting god or a god out of the school but its perfectly fine when schools put the act of being gay in sex education and social studies classes. but you see, wouldnt know these things because you have no children.

    #28.5 - Sun Dec 2, 2012 2:09 AM EST

Being gay is in social studies? What they mention a gay person in the context of history? And what do they say in sex education about gay sex? What can you really say about it? Sex education is about teaching kids to be safe with whatever choice they choose. Kids are going to do what they want, and it's best to give them knowledge to protect them. If a kid see's a photo of a dick and really likes it, It wouldn't really matter if he saw that picture or not since he is clearly already gay and if it wasn't that picture it would be something else. The same way I am attracted to Jessica Alba, gay people are attracted to each other. It's not like they just decide one day to be gay just for the hell of it.

As far as religion in school goes. It is not the place of the government to teach your kid dogma. That is what sunday school is for. Religion is already taught in a historical context in History class. That is more than sufficient and also important. What classroom do you want them to teach religion in? Certainly not the science classroom.

ledzepp94: gay people are attracted to each other because they lusted after each other, it's a spirit. I have always wondered why when gay people, (man or women) came out of the closet that their contenance changes, the women have a very masculine look about them (and I am not talking just a change of clothing or the hair) and the men are very feminine,. It's because a feminine spirit comes on the men, and a masculine comes on the women, plain and simple. That's not being hateful it's just the truth, think about it!

No, this spirit you're talking about came from one parent families. The first time little Jimmy cracked up at school and laughed like his mom or a little girl, this was just the beginning of hardships he would suffer throughtout his life. There's nothing magical about being queer, rest assured.

sex education isnt the job of the government, its my job.

Yeah, because parents do such a wonderful job teaching their kids about sex. >sarc<

they cant have that in a public school can they, because people like you want the separation of church and state inforced

If you want your kids to have a "christian education," then send them to a christian school. But your religion/god has no place in public school, precisesly because we have a separation of church and state!

I really dont understand why people have to be bothered by what other people do in there private lives. As i have already seen someone post how many east shell fish thats a sin so is wearing clothing fashioned of two or more fabrics the list goes on and on. I believe in God and i believe that he came died for our sins and as he said no sin is greater than the next. In concluding this i would like to say if you dont like it, get over it may not be life you choose to live, the way your were born, or how ever you see it but its exaclty that for others. Honestly its not like they are coming into your house flaunting it screwing on your couch or what ever yea you may see gay people kissing in public but thats gonna happen if they are married or not. i guess all in all if gays are going to hell for being gay then we are all going to hell for being sinners and you think that God lied when he said "I died for your sins". i dont think that excluded the homo population i could be wrong but.

i will field this one since I do not care who someone knocks boots with or what they do or do not believe in or whatever they think their skin color is. The key word is private. Once it makes national news then their lives are no longer private. They are subject to critisism, dislike, like, love or what ever other emotion people have on the subject. They are subject to the words that other people may use to express their emotions on well any subject.

That is real freedom and what sets you free is knowing that it matters naught what others think but what you think.

Jonathan Smith: I dont give a care what people do in their private lives, and yes it disturbs me but I know that what they do wrong is between them and God, I just pray for them. And btw, I do not feel that just because a person is gay that they will go to hell more so then a person that lies or comitts adultery, etc. we go to hell because we dont have a relationship with God. We have to strive daily to do what is right in His eyes.

As long as there are bigots like Scott who want the government to enforce their sharia laws against gays, the issue of gay rights will be in the news.

Once gays have full civil rights throughout the country and are no longer 2nd-class citizens, it'll no longer be in the news.

California governor signs bill requiring schools to teach gay history

Democratic California Gov. Jerry Brown said Thursday he had signed a bill that will require public schools in the state to teach students about the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americas.

The bill, believed to be the first of its kind in the nation, will also require teachers to provide instruction on the role of people with disabilities.

"History should be honest," Brown said in a statement.

"This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books. It represents an important step forward for our state, and I thank Senator Leno for his hard work on this historic legislation."

          Reply#31 - Sun Dec 2, 2012 2:12 AM EST

So? Like the article said, it's called being honest. There is no point in leaving someone out of the history books just because they are gay. It's like those silly texans that think if they selectively choose pieces and characters from history that they will someone be helping children. Wrong. If you leave Thomas Jefferson out of the text books because he is a liberal (yes they tried to do this), you are NOT helping your child. If someone made an important contribution to history, their sexual orientation is irrelevant. I don't think they are just sprinkling random gay people in the text books. They are talking about removing the exclusion barrier if someone has some historical purpose, i.e. walt whitman. You're right, I don't have a child, but if I did I wouldn't want that child to go off to college and ask his professor, who is J Edgar Hoover? Considering his historical importance and impact on current day federal institutions.

Like you can hide it. Not to mention there are gay students you know. Isolating them and making them feel like sh*t isn't going to help anyone. Like I said, exposing kids to historical figures who are gay is not going to make them gay. If the kids are gay, they are gay. It's the law of attraction, you are either attracted to someone or you aren't. I don't know what you're concern is, but I can tell you there are a lot of kids that have committed suicide because they feel like worthless human beings at no fault of their own, these are kids after all.

correction...these kids are killing themselves because idiots are telling them its ok to come out but dont tell them how to deal with the pressure involved when other kids and/or family members find out. way to go supporters of gay and lesbians.

if they're is any gay students, then they need to contact family and friends to learn about it. as this is a sexual preference that refers to sex and should be discussed with his or her parents. as i said before, the government shouldnt be getting involved with the sex of the peoples children.

            from The CDC

Shows like "Teen Mom" and "16 and Pregnant" have helped make teen pregnancy a topic of national conversation. However, the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that the actual rate of teen pregnancies in the U.S. has declined to a record low.

In 2009, around 410,000 teenage girls, ages 15 to 19, gave birth in the United States. That's a 37 percent decrease from the teen birth rate in1991. Then, 61.8 births per every 1,000 females was a teen pregnancy. The rate has now dropped to 39.1 births per 1,000 women. Yet according to the United Nations, the rate of teen pregnancy in the United States is nearly nine times higher than in the majority of other developed nations.

In a press release attached to the new Vital Signs report, Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the director of the CDC, wrote that despite the steady reduction in teen pregnancies over the last two decades, "still far too many teens are having babies."

"Preventing teen pregnancy can protect the health and quality of life of teenagers, their children, and their families throughout the United States."

The Vital Signs report looked at data from 1991 to 2009 and found that in addition to the steady decrease in the rate of teen pregnancies, there's also been a decrease in the percentage of high school students even having sex. More teens are using contraception, too; the CDC says the percentage of students who had sexual intercourse in the past three months without using any type of contraception decreased from sixteen percent to 12 percent while the percentage of students using two forms of contraception (for example, a condom and birth control pills) increased from 5 to 9 percent.

Still, roughly 1,100 teenage women give birth every day. According to the CDC, that means one of every ten new mothers is a teenager. The majority are Hispanic or African-American, with respective birth rates nearly double that of white teenagers. Combined, all teen pregnancies cost taxpayers about $9 billion a year.

OH sex education in public schools at its best.

              #31.6 - Sun Dec 2, 2012 3:09 AM EST

Well, you have to keep in mind that no matter where they get their education from, whether from the school or the parents, it is up to them to use it. When you are 14 you will pretty much bang anything. Shows like Teen Mom and the like are stupid and depressing, they just tell these kids hey, if you get knocked up we can put you on a TV show and make you famous. I don't like MTV.

                #31.7 - Sun Dec 2, 2012 3:14 AM EST

Preach it Scottyyyy: Well if my children were young and still in public school there is no way that they would be going to a public school, and yes I home schooled my children to protect them from stuff like that, its a sin and I did not want my children exposed to that. When my children were in school in the 80's I told them that being gay is a sin and am not one bit ashamed of it either, at least if they ever turn out that way (turn away from God that is) they cant say that no one ever told them. The bible says that if we are ashamed of Him he will be ashamed of us. You know a lot of people would like us to think that there are a lot of gays in this world but if the truth be known its a lot less then what the liberal media would like us to think!!!

The reason shows like "Teen Mom" reduced teen pregnancy rates is that the shows depict the realities of teen motherhood- partner usually unavailable or unreliable, much more difficult, if not impossible, to get an education, much more difficult to hold a job, almost no social life, constant exhaustion, constant family court battles, etc. Adolescent girls are getting a much bleaker picture of motherhood than the fantasies they have of playing house with an angelic child who only smiles and naps. When the show debuted, everyone thought teen pregnancy rates would go up because teenagers would want to get pregnant to be on TV, but the opposite actually happened.

Scottyyyy- "They" can't "push" gay life on kids in school. Just like you can't be convinced or coerced into being gay because you are not attracted to men, straight children cannot be turned into gay children. Just like black children in the sixties deserved to learn about their role models in history, as they do today, and just like girls deserved to learn about their role models in history, like they do today, then gay chilren also deserve to learn about their role models. They deserve to be recognized for their accomplishments and contributions to this country.

Sorry guys, err girls, but God gave us a conscience so yes acting and doing right was because of that, NOT because of anything good in us, its because we choose to do right, I wouldnt pat myself on the back too much because the bible says that there is none that does good, no not one. Anything good in me is because of God, not anything that I do on my own excepting obeying my conscience. I mean really the laws that were in place before the bible was written still came from God, whether you want to admit it or not. But then our sinful nature does not want to admit that there is a God because when we acknowledge that fact then we have to make a decision to live for Him or not, and our sinful nature does not want to serve Him, that is where choice comes in.

Saying that there is a god does not make it true, whether you want to admit it or not. People inhabited this planet long before there was any religion.

You have made a choice to believe in these fairy tales, and that is a choice you're entitled to make. However, you're not entitled to inflict that choice on the rest of us -- and most importantly, you are not entitled to present your chosen book, and its accompanying imaginary friend, as "real" or "true". YOUR right to believe what you want ends where MY right to believe in reality begins.

but God gave us a conscience so yes acting and doing right was because of that, NOT because of anything good in us, its because we choose to do right

"I believe in free will cause I have no choice." (forgot who said it)

A marriage in a church of any kind would suggest you believe in GOD, ALLAH, or JEHOVAH, YAHWEH and other names for the GOD of Abraham. Homosexuality is a sin, no greater or lesser than any other sin. All sin in the eyes of GOD is damnation. If you seek atonement, then it is forgiven. But, to engage in an immoral act and flaunt it, encourage others, and hunt the streets and work place for sin is an unforgiveable act. GOD is the natural order of life and also which rules and controls science, can't procreate and so not moral by any measure but a perverted sick fetish. Any pastor should be stoned for allowing this to happen. I believe we should all convert to Islam, and inact the Sharia law, make it a penalty by death. It is about votes and the sickness is spreading, it is our children that the homosexual agenda will take it's toll. NAMBLA's motto is 8 or it's too late. So, all you filthy excuses of human beings, I pray GOD will have mercy on your soul.

(note the lowercase c and g) and the fairytale of religion. Do you all still believe in santa, the tooth fairy and the easterbunny too?? they are not real also. Remember marriage is a legal contract between two people not a religious you silly christians try to make it that way.

Rick: The bible says that God is not mocked whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap, and the wisdom of man is foolishness with God. Since I was a Christian btw. when I had my children they were never told about the Easter Bunny, Santa Clause, the tooth fairy, why lie to your children. It does not surprise me and other Christians that gay marriage is so widespread in this country, God is coming soon, dont believe it fine, choose ye this day whom you will serve. And no I am not trying to scare anyone, the bible requires me to tell you. Read Ezekeil chapter 33 verse 8. Someone told me now I am telling you.

Why is it that everything that comes out of your mouth is hateful, but that's ok because the bible also says that because they hated God first they will also hate us, (Christians that is!) I mean really, God has never done anything to you, and just because you feel He may have never done anything for you (except to die on the cross for your sins,( because you do have them)does not mean He does not exist, you are here arent you????????? If you think there is no God then tell me why you can not be perfect and do no wrong each and every day, try it, because I can tell you that you will do one thing or another that is not right. I know one thing that each of us do every single day, we cannot control our tongue, because the bible says that no man can tame it! But you go on being in denial on the surface because I know deep down you DO believe in God! And btw I see way more hateful things coming out of non Christians then the other way around. Also giving an opinion about something does not make one a hater, if I tell you that it is wrong to be skinny would you get as mad then if I tell you I feel that the bible says its wrong to be gay. If you are truly honest with yourself you know I am right, its because it hits too close to home for some people and it makes them feel guilty.

Someone here said this is not a serious matter. Being a nation founded under GOD, which this act is against the laws of GOD, is very serious. Say what you want to try and justify it, it's still a sin in GODs eye. And anyone that believes in GOD and still backs this action, should be ashamed. People say the world has changed. Yes it has,but not GODs word. If they want to live together(which is still a sin), thats up to them, but we should not be marrying them in GODs name.

You'd have an easier job of understanding if you considered the actual facts, which are that any where between 51 and 53% of Americans support same-sex marriage.

Even 71% of Catholics and 73% of Jews support marriage equality. Most of the opposition comes from Southern Baptists, Mormons and other evangelicals, groups which have always been profoundly racist, homophobic, and misogynistic.

The USA is going to hell in a hand basket no doubt as GOD created male and female for a reason.....what is the purpose of two males or two females being able to get married? Daily this is being crammed down our throats so why? We have more important issues we need to correct but guess Gays for now are yelling the loudest demanding their rights which no matter what are going against GOD so how sad that we have put GOD in the background which is wrong so WAKE UP!! We have been in a period of Grace since Christ's crucifixion.... God has promised that America will be paid double for her abominations.... God has never allowed a destruction of a people or nation before first sending His prophets to share the warnings with the people. AMOS 3:7

God's warnings for America's destruction are very clear to those that seek His heart... But to those that deny HIs presences, this knowledge and understanding is veiled.

To read God's judgment for America's future or lack thereof, google: "The Message For America, Hand of Help Ministries." For how I was led to this google: "Watchman On The Wall, America ~ Mystery Babylon?" For America's 2nd major terrorist attack, google; "The Eagle and the Serpents, Hand of Help Ministries." And again, what I believe will be the location of the 2nd attack, google: "Watchman On The Wall, The Eagle and the Serpents (Part 2)."

In 1997 I was training new over the road truck drivers, one night parked in NJ a student wakes up screaming, "We have to read Revelation 18," twice. After reading this chapter he began poking on this Bible screaming, "Babylon, leader of the world, will be destroyed from the East to the West, in one hour, it will split the midnight hour." He was asleep when I drove into this place and he had never been in this area before. Immediately after saying this there was a crash in front of our tractor. We jump up to see a trailer directly in front of us and on the side of the trailer was 3 letter with 3 words. The letters were G.O.D. and the words Guaranteed Overnight Delivery. Dale and I were convinced that night that America is the Mystery Babylon.

Man can say, "I sincerely believe this or that," but that certainly does not change the facts about the truth... It took man approximately 1500 years after Christ to decide the earth was round and not flat, that the earth revolved around the sun instead of the sun revolving around the earth, and that the earth was in space.

                                          Isaiah 40:22
It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.

                                          Job 26:7
He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing. The Bible describes the Earth’s crust (along with a comment on astronomy).

Man’s so called wisdom in thinking he knows all that there is to be known is all but an illusion to him. True wisdom is gained from what man has experienced in life. There is nothing in this life that man can say for a certainty, unless he has seen, or experienced directly or indirectly that which pertains to his statements, beliefs, or faith. In other words, for man to say, “I know God does not exist,” just because he personally has not experienced a life changing event is nothing less than pure ignorance.al that America is the mystery Babylon in Revelation 18

Many in the world are delusional thinking that America is the only hope for world peace….. The only hope for world peace in with the Man of Peace, Christ Jesus.
Were it not for the Bible there would be no absolute truth in the world. Truth would be subjective to each of us as we decide what we perceived as to what is right and wrong. Hitler saw himself as being right in murder millions during his reign of terror.
One revelation from God is worth far more than the knowledge gained from all the books in the world written by men who have no understanding or comprehension of the absolute truth of God’s WORD

Knowledge and understanding of His ways are veiled to those that deny God's presences in this life.

You are greatly mistaken, it was not a hallucination, but it was a vision given me by the Almighty.

I sure wish I was a lot smarter to explain this to you. But, please tell me, if you had been taught English, but have never heard of there being another language in the world other than English and suddenly someone walked up to you who only spoke Spanish, would not that person seem like a fool? You wouldn't be able to understand even one word they were saying.... You accept only that which you understand.

                                            1 Corinthians 2:14
The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

                                            John 14:17
the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

                                            1 Corinthians 6:19
                                            Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

                                            Acts 2:17
“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

                                            John 16:13
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

                                            Acts 2:38
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

                                            Ephesians 2:2
in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

                                            1 Peter 3:18
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.
