Third donkey on Texas family's land killed with bow and arrow

Police in Fort Worth, Texas, are investigating a disturbing case of animal cruelty.

Using a bow and arrow, someone shot and killed a donkey on private land between Old Decatur Road and state Highway 287 in north Fort Worth.

This is the third such killing endured by the family in the last 13 months.

"'Are you kidding me?' That's exactly what went through my head," said Karen Oney, owner of the donkey.

Her family has about 15 donkeys on its land near Saginaw. A Fort Worth police officer driving by spotted one of the donkeys with two arrows in her mid-section.

"This morning at seven, she was alive and standing up," Oney said. "At 8:30, she was lying down and, by 10, she was gone," Oney said.

In October 2011, someone killed two of Oney's other donkeys -- also with a bow and arrow.

Police never made any arrests in the first two cases. Now there is even more pressure to find the person seemingly using the animals for target practice.

"What pleasure do you get? We see how friendly they are -- they come right up to you -- so what kind of sport is that? I don't get it at all," Oney said.

Fort Worth police seized the arrows as evidence in the case.

Oney said she believes investigators have some leads in the case that they are not sharing.

Sick. Probably a serial killer in training. I'm ok with hunters hunting wild animals... they tend to eat them, the animals probably would have died a miserable death in the wild anyways, but this is just wrong. I hope they catch the guy, put him in a pen, and plug a couple arrows in him.

Find this dirt bag or you'll be finding dead people next with arrows sticking out of them. Anybody that would senselessly kill an animal for no purpose clearly has mental problems.

It takes one low down, sick sob to hurt a harmless animal! I hope they catch this one and hang him or maybe someone should fire an arrow into his ass, no pun intended. Would like to catch him myself...I think my 45 cal. trumps a friggin bow and arrow. Sick sob!

This makes me sick. Those poor animals. I grew up with horses and the stable where I rode had a donkey... and he was just the cutest, sweetest thing. I don't know how anyone could do that to an innocent creature. I hope they catch this person (monster), but the sad thing is that once they do the animal cruelty punishments are so light that they will probably get a slap on the hand.

It kills me to hear about this sort of useless killing. Donkey's are great pets! There was a cute, loveable donkey at the stables I rode horses at when I was a kid... He was terrific. This person needs to be caught and punished for killing these innocent creatures. I agree anyone who can do this to an innocent animal is sick. I just hope the punishment for this isn't a slap on the hand - it seems that the penalties for commiting acts of animal cruelty are not very stiff. Legislation needs to be toughened up so it's actually a deterent. Can we start a petition?

It's too bad Donkeys are so nice. If they found this guy/girl it would be apropos to let some angry, unsociable, killer donkeys with sharpened hooves trample them. I don't know where you find donkeys like that, but we seem to have humans (minus the sharpened hooves) of that caliber in abundance.

RIP Sweet Donkeys

Not hard to see why. People make a conscious decision to do the things they do, while animals act on instinct and don't usually go on attack unless they are hunting or feeling threatened.

Too many sick people out there!! As others have stated on this thread...if this person is willing to use innocent donkeys for target practice, it won't be long before humans become the next target. I hope they find the perp...fast!!

I wonder if some hunter misstook them for deer? I know, no normal hunter would shoot unless you knew for sure what you were shooting at but we do have to realize that not all hunters are that with it!

They killed three of these people's donkeys in13 months. Not very accidental.

It was a Democrat because they mistook a donkey for a deer. Republican hunt and know the difference.

At any point did the owner call a vet??? Or did she just stand there and watch the donkey slowly die?

probably had to put it out of it's misery. that's what happens to animals on a farm. farmers don't make alot of money so you they can't realistically afford to pay a couple thousand dollar vet bill.

They need to be able to determine where the arrows are sold. Just like bullets they need to be able to have a tracking device. Too many animals are being target.

"Just like bullets they need to be able to have a tracking device. Too many animals are being target."

It is likely that arrows can at least be traced to the manufacturer, and far less likely to trace what retail outlet got what production run of arrows, beyond that-there is no way to track every arrow.

It is simply NOT possible to trace either arrows,or bullets with any type of tracking device, due to the force exerted on the arrows by the bow string being released, and transferring all the stored energy from the limbs of the bow-to the arrow-that alone would destroy any tracking device, then there's the impact when the arrow hits whatever it is shot at-another thing that would destroy any tracking device.

Tracking devices in bullets? Wow-you obviously know nothing about guns and ammunition, and even less about ballisitics.

I agree with you a 100% track where they bougtht the arrows !! when you find these low lifes dball them!!!!

Every retailer has a retail number and those could be imprinted on the shell casing and the arrow. Time consuming and expensive though.

This is a sociopathic killer in the works. They always start with animals, and have no regard for life, either for the animal or people. This person needs to be found and locked up, very soon.

In Texas they can still hang horse thieves. I think whoever is doing this should hope the cops find him first.

Catch the donkey killer(s) and do the same thing to them that they did to the donkeys.

Set up a decoy and snag them in the act. If they are thrill seekers they will keep coming back and getting more and more brazen. Set them up and after they have fired there arrows into the decoy....Strip them naked and drag them behind the truck through the pasture for the donkeys to play with.

So if someone shoots your dog while it was on your property you would be OK with that?
