Bob Costas on gun control comments: 'Availability of guns makes mayhem easier'

NBC Sports' Bob Costas speaks out in this exclusive interview with Lawrence O'Donnell about his Sunday night comments on the gun culture of America and the murder-suicide committed by Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher.

NBC Sports commentator Bob Costas on Tuesday expanded on comments he made Sunday about the need for gun control in the wake of the murder-suicide of an NFL player.

"What I was talking about here – and I’m sorry if that wasn’t clear to everybody – was a gun culture," Costas said on MSNBC’s “Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell,” referring to comments he made during his weekly half-time slot on NBC's Sunday Night Football. "I never mentioned the Second Amendment. I never used the words gun control. People inferred that. Now, do I believe that we need more comprehensive and sensible gun control? Yes I do. That doesn’t mean repeal the Second Amendment."

Costas sparked a firestorm when he read from a column written by Fox Sports columnist Jason Whitlock, saying: "If Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."

Belcher, a Kansas City Chiefs linebacker, shot and killed his 22-year-old girlfriend Kasandra Perkins on Saturday, before fatally shooting himself. The gun he used was registered legally, police confirmed on Monday.

Following Costas's comments, social media sites lit up as people sided with Costas or berated him.

In his interview with O'Donnell, Costas emphasized a gun culture "that demonstrates itself in different ways":

"It demonstrates itself in the Wild West, Dirty Harry mentality of people who actually believe that if a number of people were armed in the theater in Aurora, they would have been able to take down this nut-job in body armor and military-style artillery," he said. "It plays itself out in the inner cities where teenage kids are somehow armed to the hilt. And it plays itself in the sports world where young athletes are disproportionately armed."

Costas relayed an anecdote relayed to him by Tony Dungy, former head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Dungy asked 80 football players at training camp if they owned a gun. Sixty-five hands went up.

"Even if all those guns were obtained legally, you can’t have 65 guys in their 20s – aggressive young men subject to impulses, without something bad happening," Costas said.

He continued: "Give me one example of an athlete – I know it’s happened in society – give me one example of an athlete by virtue of his having a gun, took a dangerous situation and turned it around for the better. I can’t think of a single one. Sadly, I can think of dozens that by virtue of having a gun, a professional athlete wound up in a tragic situation."

Responding to criticism that Costas didn't blame Belcher for the murder of his girlfriend: "No one is saying that Belcher is not responsible. However, the ready easy availability of guns makes mayhem easier. The easy availability of guns makes this sort of thing far more likely to occur."

Meanwhile Fox's Whitlock told Roland Martin of Roland Martin Reports that he hadn't gone far enough in his original commentary. He said that he took advantage of writing about gun violence in his column because so many people ignore the real world but they do pay attention to sports.

"I believe the NRA is the new KKK," Whitlock said. "And that the arming of so many black youths, and loading up our community with drugs, and then just having an open shooting gallery, is the work of people that obviously don’t have our best interests."

NBC's Kari Huus and Isolde Raftery contributed to this report.

USA: 88.8 firearms per 100 citizens. Murder Rate: 4.2 (per 100,000 citizens).

Switzerland: 45.7 firearms per 100 citizens (1st in Europe 4th in the world). Murder rate: 0.7

Germany: 30.3 firearms per 100 citizens (8th in Europe, 15th in the world). Murder rate: 0.8

Lithuania: 0.7 firearms per 100 citizens (last in Europe, 160th in the world). Murder rate: 6.6

Source: Wikipedia.

Indeed, the problem is not guns, but people... Lithuanians have almost no guns and manage to kill 50% more people per year than Americans. Swiss have on average 2 guns per family and homocide rate 6 times lower than USA.

Exactly right, Pax. America's problems are more systemic than the simple availability of firearms. We have some deep cultural issues that need addressing - such as strengthening families, teaching children respect at a young age, encouraging a sense of community, etc. And dare I say it .... faith in GOD??? There is such a deficit of respect for others, nowadays.

Did he REALLY say:

"I believe the NRA is the new KKK," Whitlock said. "And that the arming of so many black youths, and loading up our community with drugs, and then just having an open shooting gallery, is the work of people that obviously don’t have our best interests.”

Does he truely believe that the NRA is loading up black youths with guns and drugs? There are already plenty of laws to deal with guns and drugs...maybe we should enforce the laws we have before we put more unenforced laws on the books.

Just ban the NFL.

Then none of this would have happened.

Cause and effect.

Lets make a new law that says all people who have a gun illegally must turn in there gun.

Wonder how many guns will be turned in, lol.

Bob Costas (A Plain Stupid Blubbering Idiot) and Whitlock can go take their gun control BS and NRA = KKK BS talk and take a long walk off a short pier or short cliff. They need to stick to brodcasting and witing their BS about sports of which they know very little about and nothing about gun control or the NRA.

@Joe-1015959 - Martial Arts can't stop a Criminals bullett if they have a gun and more than likely the criminal will have one.

For law abiding citizens, buying a handgun is not as easy as some people think. I bought a a handgun about a month after I received my CCP. If I'm not mistaken, there was at least 2 background checks preformed and a 48 hour waiting period before I could take delivery. When I buy ammunition, I have to provide a picture ID and sign a receipt for that ammunition. When my son (who now works in law enforcement) was in high school he told me that just about any kid could buy a gun and ammunition in less than 30 minutes while on school property. Criminals and people with bad intent on their minds will always find a way of getting what they want.

"It demonstrates itself in the Wild West, Dirty Harry mentality of people who actually believe that if a number of people were armed in the theater in Aurora, they would have been able to take down this nut-job in body armor and military-style artillery,"

Two problems with this statement. 1) In the Wild West, gun violence was actually quite rare. Some extremely famous gunslingers became famous for 1 or 2 gunfights. 2) The nut-job in Aurora had neither body armor nor military-style artillery. He had 3 semi-automatic weapons, and was wearing a tactical vest. If someone had shot him in the chest while he was wearing that, he likely still would have suffered from a couple of broken ribs (depending on the caliber) and would certainly have had his breath knocked out of him for a few seconds, plenty of time for someone to disarm him.

I Love that Costas exposed himself a a closet Liberal..And showed is is Not as smart as people give him credit! The first clue came when he referred to Witlock as a Fine sports writer...HAHAHA..Witlock is a Baffon..I read his stuff to laugh and Often wonder how he ever got his gig!!!! Next week at halftime Bob might bring up the cause of deaths from Auto accidents at 32,885 in 2010 ...And call for restricting Automobiles Or Accidents in the home..asking for permits to be issued to own a house..Or forks and Spoons to fight Obesity ???? Yes there is a culture where there Are sensless gun killings..it is the inner city where gangs get illegal guns and they have No respect for life. The US Government gave some of these gangsters guns in the Fast and Furious scam..Maybe Bob will call out Eric Holder ??? Law Abiding citizens do not kill people with guns..Criminals with illegally gotten guns do..Oh and Bob..Where handgun permits to law abiding citizens goes up..Crime goes Down !!!!! Oh he says now he doesn't want to get rid of the second Amendmenty..Well Thanks Bob..You are So generous in allowing us to keep our God given right to self protection ..That being an Inalienable Right..So Government did Not Give us that right...And can not Legally Take it away !! Hey no matter what you says to Bill OReilley tomorrow..Your an A#1 PINHEAD!!!!

Chicago police chief McCarthy said a few weeks back, "All the guns being used in Chicago in the commission of a crime are coming from the suburbs". No kidding? Where the hell does he think they came from? There have been NO gun shops or gun ranges in Chicago for the last 35 years! I wonder how long he took to figure that out? Or did someone else write that statement for him?

Bob costas is a moron, like many Liberals.

I guess when bob made the statement about if he didn't have a gun they would both be alive, he forgot about knifes, poison, baseball bats, plastic bags, rope, water, electricity, cars; should I keep going?

As a rational handgun owner in AZ, I'd like to thank Bob Costas for his gutsy commentary and articulately stating the obvious. The Second Amendment is one thing, a sick obsession is quite another. Our national firearm craze is fueled by the NRA's irrational, paranoid position on gun ownership. A gun is simply an implement - a potentially lethal tool. So is a chainsaw, but we don't yet have a National Chainsaw Association where millions of fixated members convene to fetishize the chainsaw. Who's got the biggest, baddest chainsaw? Who's got the most chainsaws? Yikes! The fearful gun culture has truly gone off the deep end with the NRA leading the way.

Nice rant....except its the gang bangers and thugs that do the crimes. Not law abiding citizens.

      You logic is flawed.

Lets blame professional wine drinkers and collectors for all the alcohol deaths.

Sorry Buzzworm, but chainsaws and guns?? What a stupid comparison. Chainsaws had nothing to do with the freedom our nation and the world enjoys. Guns have everything to do with that. Guns in the hands of everyday farmers and merchants.

"Our national firearm craze", What firearm craze? I don't hardly think the American's love of firearms is a craze. Firearms have been a part of our society since it's conception. That's hardly a craze. If you are trying to say, we Americans love our guns, you're right. If you are trying to say there is a relationship between love of guns and crime, then you are an idiot. Criminals commit the crimes. Criminals kill the people. Criminals steal, rape, rob, beat, and abuse, not guns. So buzz, if you want to save some lives, put the people commit the crimes in jail and don't let them out. Don't blame the gun.

Personnaly, I think Mr Costas is just trying to find that one time he will actually hit it big with his commentary...however, his style of reporting is the same as a Day Time Soap Opera...maybe that should be his next gig.

Regardless, I'm really tired of his "opinion" on matters... or anything! Who really cares Mr Costas what you think, your kind of full of yourself which makes me not want to listen or see you more!

Jason Whitlock is not someone I would be quoting - he's not a thinker, but much more into emoting. He's entitled to his opinion. But in truth, Belcher could have used a knife, or anything he picked up in the house to kill his GF and then himself. If a person has chosen to take a life, he/she will find a way to do it. THE PROBLEM IS NOT GUNS - IT IS VIOLENCE AND LACK OF SELF-CONTROL IN THIS CULTURE.

If you only had so much time then you should have saved it for YOUR show to prove your point cause lack of time made you look a bit like an idiot. But like most media commentators you jumped on the bandwagon Bob. Should have kept your mouth shut. On top of that it should not have been done during a football game. Cause honestly BOB you took the fun out of it. I used to have some respect for you at one time now I would rather see football without you there. Bob....Did your daddy never tell you "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, then to open your stupid ass mouth and remove all doubt"?

Tell me this Bob, more kids are killed on bicycles than with guns. Shouldn't we work on getting those bicycles under control? As long as we are suppling these kids with bicycles, they are going to keep dying on bicycles. As long as we live in a culture where a kid can just walk into walmart and buy a bicycle, they are going to keep dying on bicycles.

BTW, even more die in car accidents. What do you think we should do about this car culture? Don't you think we should get them cars under control? I mean, gee wiz, it seems like everybody has a car. We need to control who is driving around with one of these cars. Making cars so easily available is killing people, especially young people. We have got to get away from this "car and bicycle culture".

I don't think better gun control will prevent anyone from committing suicide if that is what they really choose. I have never fired a firearm in my life... but a few days ago I just made the choice to respectfully learn about guns and to know how to handle them before I even fire one. A few months ago when I was uncomfortable about guns, I mistakenly thought that there was nothing to it, that learning everything about them wasn't necessary and I became vehemently against guns. I know now, and not because of this terrible and unfortunate event, that there is so much more. I don't want to be ignorant, I want to be intelligent. I don't want stricter gun control laws to inhibit my knowledge about what could be in my future house. I'd rather learn, as is my country's given right, to know how to handle these weapons safely. Look at the numbers of suicides and figure how many are gun related. If such people desiring suicide want a way to die, they will find it and it will matter not how many laws are placed on gun control. How can we stop people for feeling suicide is their only choice? That is what we should be focusing on.

Why don't we talk about the real issue and its not guns. Its mental health. Why don't we have mental health classes in our schools? Why do not teach mental stabillity and self worth? The problem is not guns its people. If people were healthier mentaly then this stuff wouldn't happen. So lets not put our time, money and energy into punishing legal, lawful and mentaly healthy gun owners when we should put our money and resources into developing a mentaly and spiritualy healthy society.

There are over 25,000 laws on the books now regarding guns, what one or 1,000 more will do any good?

Last I knew it was already illegal to murder people. Besides, isn't the definition of a criminal someone who doesn't follow rules and laws? What makes ANYONE think criminals are going to suddenly obey a new law?

The man eventually found her and raped her in front of her child.....How many of you would of put the gun down? How many of you would of shot the intruder to protect yourself and your child? I'll answer that for you every f'in last one of you...... A criminal is a criminal they don't care. This football player murdered his wife because he was a murderer and if he didn't have a gun she would still be dead.....This bob costas is an ass
