Newly released video including a jailhouse interview reveal more insight into the mind of the late self-confessed serial killer Israel Keyes. KING's Chris Daniels reports.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A security video showing the abduction of an Alaska barista is unnerving on its own, but it only hints at the horror ahead for the 18-year-old woman.
Samantha Koenig would soon be sexually assaulted and strangled after she was kidnapped from an Anchorage coffee stand, her body left in a shed for two weeks while her killer went on a cruise. After he returned, Israel Keyes photographed Koenig for a ransom note and then dismembered her body.
Those details were released by the FBI on Tuesday, two days after Keyes was found dead in his Anchorage jail cell in an apparent suicide. It's the most comprehensive account yet of a crime at the hands of a man who confessed to the slaying and told authorities he killed at least seven other people across the country over the past decade.
Serial killer found dead in Alaska jail cell, officials say
"These details are being provided both to fully explain the courage and resolve Samantha displayed in the final hours of her life, as well as in the hopes that the release of additional details will help investigations of other murders committed by Israel Keyes," the FBI said in a statement.
Once home from his trip, Keyes posed Koenig's body to make it appear she was still alive and took a Polaroid photo of her tied up, along with a newspaper dated Feb. 13 — 12 days after the abduction from a coffee stand, according to the FBI. Keyes later typed a ransom note demanding $30,000 from Koenig's family on the back of a photocopy of the photo and sent a text message to the woman's boyfriend on her cellphone with directions where he'd left the note at a local dog park.
Keyes dismembered Koenig's body and disposed of the remains in a frozen lake north of Anchorage after he cut a hole in the ice with a chain saw, authorities said.

During a news conference, police show surveillance video of Samantha Koenig, 18, making a cup of Americano coffee for a customer who shortly after abducted her Feb. 1, 2012, in Anchorage, Alaska. Police on Tuesday released the surveillance camera footage from the February abduction at the Common Grounds espresso stand in Anchorage.
Keyes, 34, was arrested in March in Texas, after using Koenig's stolen debit card at ATMs there and in Alaska, Arizona and New Mexico. He was facing a March trial in Koenig's death.
After his arrest, Keyes confessed to killing Koenig and at least seven other people. His other known victims were Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vt., who disappeared in June 2011. Keyes told authorities he also sexually assaulted and strangled Lorraine Currier.
Father of abducted barista, 18, pleads for her return
The couple's bodies have not been found.
Keyes did not identify the other victims or say where their remains were, other than that four were killed in Washington state and one was killed on the East Coast with the body disposed of in New York. Keyes had lived in Washington state and had property in upstate New York.
He told one of the lead FBI investigators in the case that his first victim was a teenage girl in Oregon that he sexually assaulted but did not kill, the Anchorage Daily News reported. FBI special agent Jolene Goeden told the newspaper that Keyes admitted that he was a teen at the time and that "he had the intention, he said, of killing her but but did not. And he did let her go."
Surveillance video
Also Tuesday, authorities released video footage of Keyes abducting Koenig, caught by a surveillance camera. Another video sequence shows him returning for Koenig's cellphone late that night, leaving Koenig bound in his truck, followed four minutes later by a man identified by the FBI as Koenig's boyfriend, who was looking for her. Keyes would use the cellphone to send text messages to the boyfriend and coffee stand owner that purported to be from Koenig saying she had a bad day and was leaving town for the weekend.
In the first video sequence, Keyes walks up to the small coffee stand and orders an Americano coffee, which Koenig makes. He then pulls out a gun and Koenig is then seen putting her hands up several times. At some point, Keyes makes her turn off the light. The light switch was close to a panic button, but Koenig never pushed it, probably because she was too afraid, police said.
Keyes then climbs into the kiosk and, police said, used zip ties to bind Koenig's hands behind her back before leading her out. He told Koenig he would let her go if her family paid a ransom, but that was never his intention, police said.
Body in icy lake is missing Alaska barista, police say
"He knew all along he was going to kill her," Anchorage homicide Detective Monique Doll said.
Police said Keyes removed the battery from Koenig's cellphone to avoid being tracked.
Koenig's body was recovered from the lake in April after Keyes told authorities of its location.

Rest In Peace Samantha
Rot in Hell Keyes. I hope you get a pitchfork shoved up your @ss daily for all eternity.
A special place in hell for sure....lmao about the pitchfork too!
Not sure if you went back to that thread last night or not Mindie but I apologized for my smart ass nature in our little debate. Again, sorry....
There are no words to describe the horror that poor girl endured. I hope Keyes horror will be 10 fold. Disgusting mother effer!
I am glad he killed himself now we don't have to feed him for 30 or 40 years!
MY HE ROT IN HELL
Wish she would have pressed the panic button. He may have shot her but at least she wouldn't have been tortured.
It is a good thing he went on a cruise and not to Israel, because they would be unable to extradite him from that country. Good thing that POS is dead, however it happened.
This guy was probably another product of failed parenting, all to frequent it seems in todays world. Todays news reporters never do any back ground checks, no history on these people. We get these newsflashes and they move on to the next one.
Fear of death is as bad as actual death. Would you rather be shot at the coffee shop - or go with a crazy person and be cut up into pieces? I'll take my chances by standing up to a crazy person, while in public, over going with them to some private/secluded place.
To the right-wingers posting; what good does all of your after death wishing do to help? How much more unbalanced can a person get, than to live in a loop of; if it's good - credit God, if it's evil - credit a devil? And make sure you send them to Hell using all CAPS - that will get them there faster...lol.
I'll bet this killer was already a felon - who are the idiots who keep supplying guns to criminals?
What is there to say about this kind of horrific murder?
The bastard took the easy way out---Probably high on Drugs and Alcohol, with a Pyschotic Mental Illness.
Hopefully, we do not hear that he had been seeing a Pyschiatrist, or someone in the Pyschology field who did not report his potential to kill, like a previous person who massacred many.
EVIL is lurking around more these days--More sickos are on the loose. Loners, and misfits.
Too bad that NFL Belcher did not take his own life first either--Crazies, just plain crazies--
"At some point, Keyes makes her turn off the light. The light switch was close to a panic button, but Koenig never pushed it"
Dumbazz
I look at it this way--the taxpayers don't have to pay for trials, appeals, and housing for life. He did everybody a favor-except perhaps for the families of the people he murdered whose bodies will never be found...
People who commit these types of crimes should be slipped a little rope into their jail cells. We could then hope that a majority of them just save us the trouble and hang themselves.
Im for her and her family, and everyone else affected.
Just as an FYI to women, or anyone for that matter. Ransom victims rarely get release after they get their money. Push the panic button if you can. It can save you from what this girl had to go through.
Hey Patches--the criminals are getting their guns from other criminals. What--you think they get them legally???
I wonder if anyone helped him "kill himself"? If they did, they should get a medal and a parade. Too bad the boyfriend wasn't 4 minutes faster. Sad story
Patches, they get them from other scum bag party line spewing ultra wacko far left wingers like....well....you!!!
It's time to stop studying these serial killers and just kill 'em.....publicly
Hey tom-1768340, I agree with you whole heartedly. Let's air it on CNN and kill 'em publicly. Kinda like the old Roman era in the arena. Soooooooo very glad he offed himself. What a friggin waste of money we spend on these useless, pathetic, phycho sickos keeping them alive.
Let the Pitbulls loose on them!!
Sorry MF- ROT IN HELL for Eternity your sorry A** looser.
@ Udontsay; you never had a gun pointed at you before, have you? All you see is a barrel
a serial killer never stops only death brings to a end their violence and hatred to everyone; NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, let yourself be taken, your chances of surviving are very slim; anything can be used as a weapon, a coffee cup broken makes a sharp weapon, a pencil in the eye, keys are a good slashing weapon, if all else falls use your teeth; in Louisiana few weeks ago a brave little lady put up such a fight that the killer had to go get emergency treatment, that is how they got a lead on him; after he was arrested he gave details of other killings, they never stop.
Lady's if you are afraid of firearms, carry a can of wasp and hornet spray in your car, one good shot in the face will bring a gorilla down, always be aware that these craze's are out there.(we used to give classes at my agency about 2 times a year, the lady's and girls always told us they felt much safer after our classes.
Patches,
It takes a special kind of Azzhole to shoot right off the hip into political talking points when the story is all about some poor girl that got killed by a F'n psycho.. your a certain kind of FU and need to look hard into the mirror.. your ill.
For everyone who are glad he offed himself before a trial so he doesn't waste taxpayer money, I'd like to remind you of these paragraphs in the article;
After his arrest, Keyes confessed to killing Koenig and at least seven other people. His other known victims were Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vt., who disappeared in June 2011. Keyes told authorities he also sexually assaulted and strangled Lorraine Currier.
The couple's bodies have not been found.
Keyes did not identify the other victims or say where their remains were, other than that four were killed in Washington state and one was killed on the East Coast with the body disposed of in New York. Keyes had lived in Washington state and had property in upstate New York.
Try saying 'I'm glad he doesn't waste any more taxpayer money' to the families of his other victims, who will now never have the chance to recover the remains of their loved ones and give them a decent burial because he took the secret of where he hid their bodies to the grave with him.
Those families will now never have closure, never have a gravesite where they can bring flowers, never be able to bring children and grandchildren to pay respects to the loved dead. That peace of mind is priceless to those who have lost loved ones to senseless violence and I, for one, would not care if my tax dollars went to keep him in prison if it meant we might someday be able to close those missing persons cases.
Blessed Goddess, can we as a society find it in ourselves to have some compassion for those victims' families?
Gee AP why don't you list some more serial killer ideas while you're at it so the more tepidly, sick, and stupid people can learn more how to commit acts of violence. The media sucks...
This is tragic. I am glad he killed himself but in the same vein he got off to easy. I have always said I would fight as hard as I could to not let someone take me somewhere to play with me before killing me. If they are going to kill you anyway they will do it there if they aren't they won't.
Never, ever go quietly, that's my motto.
Going quietly like a lamb to the slaughter is exactly what criminals want.
Especially if you are in a public place they don't want you making a lot of noise and calling attention to the situation.
Take your chances, scream, fight back, act completely insane and most likely they will run. I know he had a gun which is terrifying, but you must take your chances right then and there and hope he won't fire it or he may miss if you are fighting back.
But if you go quietly, are tied up and taken to a desolate place, which is most likely where you are going, there is NO hope for you.
And as hard as a situation like this would be, if you try to stay calm and think your way out of it, you may survive. At least you have a fighting chance. Poor woman.
He didn't kill himself because he had remorse. He killed himself because he knew he didn't have a chance, he had a long way till the death penalty and he didn't want to go through it. People like that are all analytical, they don't have a conscience.
RUSS62 - The day I had a .357 pointed at me, all I did see was the barrel, and it looked like the barrel of a cannon - like I could stick my entire head inside. The POS rapist had been released from city jail (why, I do not know), stole the gun and then stuck it in my face - all within a two-hour period, at 4 in the afternoon. If it weren't for some guy across the street asking me if everything was allright, scaring the monster off, who knows what might have happened. I was scared stiff.
I am also sad that Samantha didi not hit the panic button, but please do not judge this girl, because until it happens to you, you'll never know how you'll react.
Dear Samantha: God hold you in His hand for all your suffering, please rest in a wonderful place.
Creepy POS Keyes: I hope all the above suggestions happen to you for all eternity - you deserve everything you get. And that's not being judegmental - that's the Universe's justice.
Once again justifiable case for Capital Punishment..... The sooner the better..... If they are too broke for the bullet let me know and I will donate it and the gun for the execution.....
My condolences to this young ladies family 8(
A father & mother have lost the most precious thing in their lives.
RIP
Women whose work leaves them vulnerable to an attack like this should arm themselves with pepper spray and/or a stun gun.
It is of vital importance to NEVER let the abductor take you into his car. Scream, fight, run, do whatever is necessary to avoid being abducted. Even if he has a gun, FIGHT! If this guy really planned to ask for ransom, then he would not have shot her if she refused to go with him.
Even if he has a gun you're better off taking the chance that if you fight or run, he'll shoot but miss or shoot you but fail to kill you. Once he has control over you and can take you to a secluded place, your odds of survival are almost nil.
Sincere condolences to her family and friends.
Make it hourly and we agree.
What is unfortunate is that he just didn't do himself first, if he was so fascinated with death: would have saved everyone a lot of heartache.
Hey Bob Costas, no guns were used in this crime at any point, the only point is, if someone wants to kill you they will find many other ways to do it. Better outlaw strangulation cord along with sugary snacks, p.s. ROT IN HELL KEYES!.
Hey Mr. Ed, no reading comprehension was used in the construction of your post at any point.
In the first video sequence, Keyes walks up to the small coffee stand and orders an Americano coffee, which Koenig makes. He then pulls out a gun and Koenig is then seen putting her hands up several times.
Shake boy, it could have been a squirt gun and it would have ended the same way. An 18 year old girl would have been in a panic state either way, so your argument means nothing.
Yes, if you are thinking of doing a murder suicide, switch things up and kill yourself first, then go for the murder. Everyone will think you are original.
mrBurns.....psycho-cowards do not think that way!!! Nor do they obey the laws of man or God. I agree with the principle thought.
Maybe if they included the surveillance video, one would not have to be able to read to know a gun was involved.
:)
I have no proof but believe the lack of reading ability and comprehension is a result of "No Child Left Behind"
no need for political statement...just prayers for the parent, friends and family members of this poor girl...they must be inconsolable at such a horrific act...may they some how finds peace in the years to come...
Actually, Snake Boy, Tom is technically correct, no gun was used ONLY SEEN. And as someone else stated, it could easily hae been a toy, used to the same affect.
How sad :( I think EVERYONE needs to KNOW what I learned in self-defense courses.. NEVER let yourself be TAKEN to a SECOND LOCATION. Your odds of SURVIVING will be almost ZERO at that point :( Your attacker has already made EXACT PLANS for THAT location :( At the point of ATTACK..SCREAM, ACT LIKE AN IDIOT, Use ANYTHING as a WEAPON, do ANYTHING you can think of at a HORRIBLE time to SAVE YOUR LIFE. You are better off injured or DEAD at the first attack location than taken someplace else and tortured and killed :( Poor woman :( So sad :(
I can't think of anything that is bad enough to wish on Keyes. I am stunned by the depravity - I've been following this case since her disappearance. Her poor family.
Well personally my all time favorite punishment for crimes such as this...LET THE PARENTS/FAMILY have some quality alone time with the S.O.B. Still save tax payer dollars cuz you can bet they'd be carrying his corpse out. Talk about closure. Horrific for all his victims families...May God shower them with comfort and strength.
DOLPHIN: I see the "LET THE FAMILY AT 'EM" type posts a lot. From the family of a murder victim:
"We can only forgive, anything less would make us just like him."
She was my first girlfriend and I felt the same way until her Mom said that. Makes you think.
He stabbed her almost 30 times...and he got caught because his finger was found in her throat. That's brutal.
tom-1768340, to you and all others that loved her, I'm sorry for your loss.
Another gun nut kills 7 people. Oh wait, they weren't killed with a gun! How did that happen?
Jive - at least say something half-way intelligent and interesting instead of being nothing but a 'baiter' on this thread. True, a gun was used to intimidate and kidnap her - end of story, just like you should be.
Gun was used to coerce her into leaving. I suggest to all that that may encounter something like this is to go down fighting at the spot an abduction is taking place, your chance of survival is much greater. This is what my father told all his daughters, another one is if your car breaks down in the middle of no where-get out and hide in the bushes until a cop comes, don't be a sitting duck in your car.
Like a knife wouldn't have worked. Get a life.
No- a knife might not have worked. If I were in a similar situation, I hope I'd take my chances fighting back if the guy only had a knife. There would be a chance to come through it. A loaded gun pointed at me is a whole other thing.
Again...it doesn't matter the weapon...you either take your chances and fight back or die!
I had rather be shot right there. If I'm going to be killed anyway, I'd rather be shot dead in a public place.
I figure if you have a loaded gun pointed at your face, you may as well as consider yourself dead. I would do the best I could to disarm the MFer or die trying.
Hard to know, given as it's highly dependent upon the precise situation one may be facing.
One thing I can share, however, is that if you have a gut feeling that a gun pointed in your direction by someone who is trying to get you to do something under duress isn't real, putting up a fight may put the odds in your favor. Most people are going to assume that something that looks like a gun is real. Those who don't think that a gun is real might just be crazy, but barring that, then they've probably seen some detail that just didn't look right. Through the years, a number of robberies and abductions have been attempted or even successfully completed with 'guns' fabricated from soap, wood, or whatever. Squirt guns, both in bright colors and spray painted black to disguise them, have been used often enough. Cap guns, non firing replicas, dollar store toy guns, low powered BB and pellet target pistols, Airsoft guns, and even paintball markers have been used. A couple things are generally true in these cases: 1) the crime may be somewhat impromptu and 'half hearted', 2) the offender felt his target was 'soft' and while displaying some weapon would help him get what he wanted, he also felt confident that he would face little or no opposition, or 3) he mistakenly thought that not using an actual weapon would mitigate the crime and spare him aggravated charges if it went south on him and he was caught.
If one works in a place where robbery or abduction is a realistic possibility, having a general familiarization with firearms (and even other weapons that may be encountered) can be useful. Being able to recognize a real handgun from one that isn't can be a real plus, and if you've spent some time around pistols and revolvers, it's usually easy to do. A fake one has to be pretty good to fool someone who's spent some time around handguns unless it's in very low light or else someone just shoves something into your back (which could even be the open end of a soda or beer bottle!) and implies that is's a gun. Perhaps even more importantly, if you know enough about firearms and weapons to recognize certain types and features, you make a much better witness after the fact. If you can attest that a robbery suspect pointed a stainless steel or nickel Smith and Wesson K or L frame revolver with a barrel that had a full underlug and looked to be 6" long and that jacketed hollowpoint bullets were visible in the chambers of the cylinder from your vantage point, you'll be much more helpful than the person who can only say, 'He pointed some kind of pistol at me', which would be not only a vague but technically incorrect allegation that anyone could make about anyone else. A diligent officer would have to question you a bit to get a good description of the weapon. If you can come out and describe the weapon accurately, a jury would not question what you claimed to have seen and that robber isn't likely to be walking the streets anytime soon.
Every cop and self defense course states---Do not Leave with the perp!!!
Put what meaning you want to that advice...Do NOT leave with the perp!!!!
BORDER JOE:
"That is what I read in the literature my son brought home from school. It had a statistic that was:
I am not positive about the 90%....but the point was to resist being taken away. It said to kick, scream, whatever; call attention to yourself.
Just because this victim was not killed with a gun doesn't mean that others were not. The Currier's house was robbed and several guns were taken when he kidnapped them. These were two adult persons that went missing from their own home and because he is dead, there is little hope that Bill's mother will ever know where her son and daughter in laws bodies were left. Kind of hard for a Mom to not know about her child. I'm sure it is the same for the other victims of this serial killer. That is the only regret from hearing of his death.
I wonder if he had anything to do with those dead coasties?
I was wondering the same thing. This guy might have been the one they're looking for to explain all the bodies.
So so sad and horrific to think of what Samantha went through.
I only wish the coward had told authorities where to find the other bodies of his other victims so those families can finally start healing. I'm not sad he's dead.
It is just sad that our criminal justice system does not dispose of these people at a greater rate. The majority of the people would want swift death and yet our politicians and judges do not allow it. How can this be in a "democracy?" Where there is no issue of guilt, swift death is the only way.
It would be worth going to hell just to see him there.
So you would get what, a few good seconds of "serves him right" then an eternity of torment. Yo may want to think this one through...
I agree may want to rethink that 8p
Here in California we have plenty of sick @!$%#s just like this one 8( kicking it in jail having a grand time on my dime.
Richard Ramirez = The Night Douchebag Stalker should have been immediately executed after his trial ended back in the mid 80s.
These people are never willing to face the death penalty or life in prison, if other cowardly possibilities exist such as suicide. These sexual predators are cowards and want control. The US needs to start an outsourcing program and sending the molesters to a prison in El Salvador or one of the hardened prisons in other countries. Our programs are not working in this country.
I agree, death is the easy way out for this monster.
What if there is no hell?
Oh sure there is Maxwell. Just take a look around.
Who brought up Hell Maxwell? Oh yeah, you.
It's so easy to see evil and good I mean it's blatant.
Your typical "white male, child molesting, perverted catholic"...
All must die as they have done nothing but evil throughout history...
Someone always manages an ignorant comment. PB gets the nomination today
short man syndrome perhaps?
Crawl back under the bridge little troll...
The face of racism is revealed.
That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard PB. Sounds to me like you have your own demons to fight. What makes you think this guy was Catholic anyway? With a name like Israel, really?
PBShort, since we are in the mood to stereotype, u must be your typical dumb minority then (probably a ni!!!er)
PBS sounds more like someone who wears a diaper on his head.... "All must die" isn't that what they yell right before they blow $h!t up?
There are mad men among us...
Would it make more sense to have the cameras directed towards the potential perps or not? Just a thought!
many retail stores have the camera on the employees to make sure they are putting the money in the register and not in their own pockets... nice to know that they care about the welfare of their people....
Why did this pr!ck do this?
To those who are against the death penalty, would you still disagree in cases like this? If so, why?
Yes, Cappy 1911, I'm still against the death penalty, even in a horrible case like this. You want to know why? Because state-sanctioned murder is still murder. The US is one of the only industrialized nations on earth to still use the death penalty. It's barbaric.
But he admitted to it and killed himself anyway?
I see both sides and don't want to play God, but WOW, he was evil.
There have been numerous people who have been executed for a crime they didn't commit. There are people who sit on death row now, who are innocent. That's the problem with the death penalty. It's final. You can't undo that mistake and humans can and do make those mistakes, even prosecutors and cops.
I'd like to see certain people fry too, however the risk of executing the innocent people (and thus allowing the real killers to walk) is too great to support the death penalty.
Ask yourself: If that innocent person was you or your loved one: Would you still support the death penalty?
It's not as barbaric to just drift off to sleep and die compared to what he put his victims through. There was an assurance of guilt in this case, as has been in many others.
If this were done to my child, wife, etc., and confessed to, i.e. no doubt the mf did it, I would want to carry out the death penalty myself, and it would not be some painless shot in the arm. I would make the mf suffer. Call me babaric. What that cowardly piece of excrement was barbaric and he would deserve nothing less than the same or worse.
ECF, let's hopre nothing like this happens to your family member. You are an arse.
Hey ECF2222, then you can foot the bill for all of those you do not wish to "murder" over the span of their lives. Leave me out of paying that bill. In fact, lets see if you feel the same way if you check a box on your tax form to take that hit and let all of us who disagree to let you take it instead of paying for it ourselves. I bet you don't check the box.
Actually 55 countries in total support the death penalty
Because death is too easy for monsters like this. A lifetime facing his crimes in a rotten prison cell much worse (costs less too--believe it or not--if you do some research you'll find out it actually costs LESS than death penalty due to legal costs).
Also "don't kill or I'll kill you" really does not deter murderers. (e.g., this guy wasn't afraid to die, was he?--he killed himself, didn't he?)
And yes, I had a loved one murdered, and somehow the death penalty did not attract me. Too easy, too quick and would not bring back my beloved sister anyway...
Death penalty is not a deterrent it is a punishment. Those who do not support death penalty cannot support military. Death is a very necessary evil for the cleansing of society. I heard everybody in prison say their innocent.
The problem we have is letting these people repel the death penalty sentence for 30+ years at the cost of tormenting the witnesses, family me members and the millions of tax dollars. Then you have cases
where criminals use it as a bargaining chip in exchange for body locations. BTK, Ted Bundy and many others should be executed in a timely manner. Give then 3 years to repel and then execute them already. Bargaining chip; how about one dead body one month stay, one live body one year stay? Why take it completely off the table?
And yes innocent people might be executed (reasonable doubt takes the death penalty off the table), but we seem to imprison innocent victims every day without as many objections. It’s the notion that death is
finial and against someone’s faith. Great, when someone kills your family you can fight for the criminal,
but don’t take away my eye-for-an-eye right to see these animals die if they kill my family. And make it quick so everyone is not suffering for 30 years.
cappy...I agree with you. Manson, the Ft. Hood Muslim-Terrorist and other mass murderers still breath and live off the tax- payers , when they should be rotting in Hell! I will never understand the bleeding -hearts idiots and they have no intelligent rational to stand on. It is one of the very few purposes of Government, to protect the Citizenry. Just like Manson, these scums-of -society will live off the tax-payers at the cost of over $70 k a year, and get a very real chance of being turned free back into society. Other idiots argue that, the Big Government they want to provide Santa Clause style free cell phones , is somehow now not so all-knowing and consistently locks up the innocent on trumped-up charges.
It is too sad that there are not means available to the police and courts to get the information from the preps. Where and who has he killed before?? If that was your child you would want to know. Ted Bundy manipulated the system and teased the system with releasing more info on his victims , that he never gave....just like this jerk.
yakfitguy, that's why the death penalty should only be used when a conviction results from eye witnesses, video of the crime, DNA, confession or other means that PROVE guilt, not circumstantial evidence. That way no one innocent is executed.
Even without that, the number of innocent people executed is infinitesimal compared to the number of people murdered by killers released back into the public.
Maxwell,
Thats why all prisoners commit suicide right? I swear, people like you put zero thought into their arguments.
NotAtAll,
Tell you what lets do that for illegal immigrants and entitlements as well. If you love them, you foot the bill. I'd gladly prefer to just pay for the conservative things over liberal money wasting policies.
What a horrible tragedy, a horrible loss of life at the hands of a maniac.
The American justice system:
A man is sentenced to 15 years in prison for growing pot. (not always, I know, but there have been many cases like this)
A man can get out of prison in less than 15 years for murder. (yes, it happens)
??
people in prison for pot are right next to murderers and rapists, doesn't seem right.
I can't believe he killed himself. The taxpayers were supposed to spend million of dollars on him over the next twenty years.
And if he had lived long enough in prison, a bunch of bleeding heart folks filled with revisionist history would have been working to get him freed.
Death penalty actually costs MORE than life in prison. Look it up.
Letusreason: "And if he had lived long enough in prison, a bunch of bleeding heart folks filled with revisionist history would have been working to get him freed."
Sentence him to life in prison WITHOUT possibility of parole. Problem solved. Costs less too.
Death is too quick and too easy. He killed himself, didn't he? He wanted to be killed and/or to die. Why fulfill his wish?
It's hard to believe anyone can read this account, and still be opposed to capital punishment.
Let us reason...see my response to Cappy above.
If the death penalty is a worse punishment than life in prison why would someone choose to give themselves the death penalty? Death is the easiest way out of all, why do think so many people kill themselves every day. I've never heard of anyone who said "I can't take it anymore I'm going to give myself life in prison instead of shooting myself in the head" The prison officials who allowed this to happen on their watch should be fired and barred from working in any law enforcement capacity for life. They not only denied justice for Samantha but left the other victims families' without answers they may have gotten from a trial. He got away way too easy, he should spent the next 60 or so years in prison. And for those who think there is someone with a pitchfork in a fiery cave torturing him for eternity you need to grow up, there's no Santa Claus either by the way.
I see what you're saying Fitz, but the people are going broke already. Had enough paying for trash and one like that isn't worth a dollar
Guilt is undeniable. EXECUTE IMMEDIATELY! Saves money, big time. Stop the justice games intended for the for profit justice/prison system. There is a Santa Clause I just saw him yesterday.
I don't understand: An 18 year old girl works alone in this kiosk? I'm sure they never expected anything like this to happen, but obviously there are evil people lurking in the unlikeliest of places. The bigger picture, of course, is that this guy was a cold-hearted murderer, and what he did to that poor girl and what he put her family and boyfriend through are disgusting. And in the end, what a coward he was.
He was always a coward, killing weaker people that were not in a position to defend themselves.
Alaska has more than it's fair share of sex offenders from what I understand. Very sad that this young girl had to fall prey to such a monster. I think that the more people that live on this little planet, the more broken people we're going to have to deal with.
Heh, I'm with the rest of you in not being sad that the guy offed himself, but really, what's with all the silly comments about him being a coward for doing it? Really, you think after everything he did and confessed to it would have been "brave" of him to spend the rest of is life in prison or waiting for the government to kill him instead? How does that make any sense?
Definitely a heartbreaking story, my heart goes out to the families of his victims.
I'm definitely not upset he is dead, but investigators were still getting valuable information out of him. He revealed that there were other victims, but he was only giving little bits of information at a time. That is why a lot of this information was kept under wraps for a long time. I would not be surprised if there were more victims than he talked about. He was definitely a waste of air, but there were other victims and families who won't ever have closure. That is the only bad thing about him killing himself. I went to school with Samantha but never knew her personally. My heart has been breaking for her family and friends ever since this happened.
Hey, Pedestrian in SF - this horrible thing happened in Alaska but the monster was a transient - he was from the Lower 48. Don't make it sound like most Alaskans are bad people. I have lived in this great state most of my 60 years and crimes never used to happen here, until people from the Lower 48 started moving up in droves after the oil boom. Lay off Alaska, pal. To Samantha's family - my heart grieves for and with you. I'm glad the evil thing that did this to her is gone from this earth. I truly believe she is in a much better place and you will be reunited with her one day. God bless.
In each rebirth, may he suffer the same fate as his victims, and be made to feel the unfathomable agony of their families. Damnation is too good for him.
Just 4 minutes separated her boyfriend seeing this guy in the store looking for her cell and him looking for her. Just 4 damm minutes. I would be hurting the rest of my life knowing/thinking maybe I walked to slow to my car or took to long to eat 4 minutes to long.
Actually the boyfriend confronted him at their home when he went back later to get Samantha's debit card. He saw the murderer and was going to get the police!
He looks a little like the nut case that killed many people at the Colorado batman movie theater killings. Has that weird look in his eyes
same crazy eyes as Nancy Pelosi ... I'm just saying
Ladie, ladies, please- if you are approached by a crazy man -please, please PUSH THE PANIC BUTTON, fight with all your might- but do not let him take you off the site. Better he kills you there then to take you off somewhere and does god knows what to you before he kills you. May you rest in peace Samantha- and ROt IN HELL YOU CRAZY MF Keyes. Lets start a vigilante program and just go after these MFs- kill them all.
guess - you think the guy had a bunch of face lifts?
that same crazy look as rep john boehner-----just saying!
The girl has a name! The is no doubt of guilt. Time to dispose of the trash, preferably horrifically as he did to others. Samantha and probably the others were terrified. He needs to feel that before his death. A slow death could be accomplished by mechanical or mammalian means. A pod of Orcas in a playful mood, him in a seal suit. Buzz saw!
Too late. He killed himself.
You'er right I didn't read caption under his ugly mug. my bad. One can dream of what his just punishment should be.
Samantha. I know where you are. I will pray for your family here on the Earth.
What is Americano Coffee?
It is espresso shots and hot water. Good stuff...
I believe I would have forced him to shoot me. Right there in the coffee stand. Samantha was so young and had her life stolen from her. Very, very sad.
I always remember never to let them take you anywhere. That decreases your chances of survival.
I agree, just shoot me there. Poor thing. So close to the panic button, breaks my heart.
Look at that slime from Aruba Joran Vanderslop. He's in a Peruvian cell yet some trashy Peruvian girl is pregnant by him.
You really didn't need to publish this article. Think of the family and the other wacko's out there who will now get even more ideas.... This is Murdoch journalism...
Kevin:
Hopefully if anyone tries to copycat, the girl will be carrying.
I am pretty sure that other crazy people out there who are depraved enough to follow through don't need ideas, they already have them. This article won't increase or decrease their desire to act as monsters. As for the publishing, I don't think all of the details needed to be released, but investigators are still looking for information on this guy. The article posted in Anchorage said he was still giving valuable information little by little. I think, knowing that his killings weren't just isolated to Alaska, getting some of this information out could be potentially helpful in figuring out if there were other victims he didn't talk about. Apparently he was pretty methodical. There was a vague timeline posted in the Alaskan article and investigators are asking for inforamation nationwide.
