Judge's unusual order to man with nine kids: Stop procreating

Racine County Sheriff's Department

Corey Curtis, 44, was sentenced to three years of probation on Monday with the condition that he is not to procreate until he
can support the nine children he fathered with six women.

A Wisconsin judge has ordered a man who owes $90,000 in child support after fathering nine children with six women to not have any more kids, at least for now.

Racine County Circuit Court Judge Tim Boyle sentenced Corey Curtis, 44, to three years of probation on Monday with the condition he is not to procreate until he shows he can support his children, according to court documents.

Curtis pleaded no contest in October to one count each of felony bail jumping and failure to pay child support.

Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Sommers said Curtis owes about $50,000 in back child support, plus another $40,000 in interest to the mothers, the Journal Times reported.

“Common sense dictates you shouldn’t have kids you can’t afford,” Racine County Circuit Court Judge Time Boyle said at a hearing, according to the Journal Times. “It’s too bad the court doesn’t have the authority to sterilize.”

In his decision, the judge cited a 2001 case in which Wisconsin Supreme Court justices upheld a Court of Appeals ruling that a judge may, as a condition of a person’s probation, order the defendant not to have another child unless he can show financial viability.

Curtis told local station WDJT-TV he planned to comply with the unusual order in his case.

"Judges, they make rulings," Curtis said. "They make them kind of hastily. So, if that's what he feels one of my conditions should be then I'm going to abide by it."

This isn't the first time a judge has made a ruling intended to block breeding.

A Kentucky judge in March ordered a man who had fathered a dozen children by 11 women to refrain from having “any sexual intercourse” for the one-to five-year period he’s on parole.

A Texas judge in 2008 sentenced a 20-year-old mother to 10 years probation for not protecting her 19-month-old daughter from abuse by the child's father. The judge ordered her to not get pregnant during her probation.

the pro-lifers and anti-abortionists should be forced to pay for these babies. make them do something useful instead of picketing with stupid signs and spreading hatred. if they can't even afford to help raise these unwanted children why do they fight to have more unwanted children to be born? and no, i'm not about killing babies and i abhor the idea of some fetus eyes being ripped apart before they even have a chance to see the light of day. but knowing these babies are bred by losers that will breed even more losers when they grow is much much more painful and yes it's much better for everyone to not let them have babies in the first place.

There are 42 families hoping to adopt for every 1 healthy baby given up for adoption. The solution isn't abortion, but rather getting women to realize that the loving choice for their baby is finding a stable home rather than trying to raise him/her in a dysfunctional circumstance.

Why would they want to do that?? Every time they have another one, their welfare check and EBT card increases!

Yus - Abortion has nothing to do with this. These baby mammas never had any intention of aborting, nor did they ever once consider adoption.

I agree with diane1501584. These people don't have abortions. Abortions would cost them free money. If they have these kids they can ask for food stamps and medicaid coverage. Because often times they don't want to work. What is the real tragedy is because of our current president, I will end up having to pay extra taxes for these idiots. I see this every day in my line of work. Sure I don't mind helping someone who is trying to get on their feet. But most of the money ends up going to people like this. And the government doesn't do anything to control that. Remember not everyone who is in a poor situation are working to get out of it, or even want to. The government allows them to do this. I've seen people come into work that have 6 kids, all with different last names. They don't want abortions, live off the government, and blame everyone for their problems. Quit having kids!

Crimson Wife - Those 42 families only want babies. Right now there are over 150,000 children in foster care waiting for forever homes in America. Teenagers. Sibling groups. Children with physical, mental, or emotional disabilities. Children who have been abused and neglected. Nobody wants them. Alot will age out in the system. The average age of a foster child is 9.9 yrs old. Unless they are white, male and under age of 2 the likelihood them being adopted is low.

You mentioned Baltimore - go to Bayside Hospital and see all the meth-head, oxy-downer WHITE babies in the NICU unit. It's not a race issue - it's generational poverty, ignorance and lack of hope for something better. You need to open your eyes, Skippy.

No worries Audrey. At least you won't have to pay the extra taxes like I will to support these kind of people then. Luckily you can pay for your kids. A majority cannot and keep having them. They are the ones that are on food stamps and medicaid. The current government just supports these habits. Its easy to get free help as it is.

People who blame the mothers ANNOY me. Like you are so perfect and I'm sure every person you have ever dated/married/had children with was perfect. Of course that is why the divorce is so high, right? Because everyone is perfect. If the man is not supporting his children, how do you know he is present in their lives at all or even claiming his kids. How can the mom know about his children if he isn't raising any of them? To her, he is just an available man. People do lie, you know. You don't know the mothers but what you do know is that the father is not paying child support. I am assuming the mothers are taking care of their children but we can only ASSUME because the case is about the FATHER not the mother.

When I met my ex, he had two children by his ex-wife. Sounded like a normal enough story, right? Wrong! I found out after we had our son who we were TRYING for that he was cheating on me, his ex-wife was really his wife who lived in the States (my ex and I were in Europe together) and he had NO intention of being a part of our son's life. I got my child support, $250 a month that does nothing for my son and I. I have never been on welfare, have a great career and am finishing my third degree. I started my first degree as a single mom. I was blessed to meet a great man who is now the only father my son has ever known. I later found out that my ex has 4 kids with his now ex-wife and another one with his new wife. And he isn't taking care of any of his children. I was young, 21 years old when I met him, and he took advantage of my naivete. I thought he loved me. I was in the Army and so was he so I thought we could have our child together. We both had good jobs.

You can judge all you want but you don't know the whole story. Not every person who finds themselves in similar situations are whacked out welfare crackheads. Some are educated people who believe in love. At 21, I didn't think to run a background check on him.

When I read this story, I thought that maybe the mothers and I should take my ex to court and have the same thing done.

You chose poorly JaevisMom. Bet you don't do that again.....$hit happens right? There are many things we should listen to concerning the teachings of our parents. Picking a good mate is one. Careful, love isn't always enough....in fact it is never enough. I heard it all from my mother and father. If we don't listen then we learn the hard way. Lots of us have certainly!

Your case is not unique. However, this is too far! You can't possibly think these women aren't just as at fault as this loser. They are all losers. I feel sorry for their children.

I think you guys should get together and castrate your ex. I am all for that!...lol. The guy is a loser and at least in the end you saw him for what he was and moved on....plus you got what I assume are children you love and enjoy very much.

Teach your children about dirtbags like this and show them what signs to look for. That's the best you can do...that and move on.

God bless and thanks for your service btw.

Set the 'welfare' claim at maximum of 5 for the mother -OR- 5 for the father. Any child conceived after that limit gets no support. None. There is OBVIOUSLY a problem.

It's a shame that the kids will get the short end of the stick - but life is tough and paying people to have sex is illegal in most of the US. And when those kids get older - if they live through it - they will know with certainty at least one of their parents was a gutter whore.

Something must be done for sure Mark. But throwing children out in the cold for the idiocy of their parents is not something I would want to be a part of. Sterilizing morons like this and taking the children and installing them into stable homes with people who genuinely care for them is something I would vote for any day!

          #34.1 - Wed Dec 5, 2012 3:13 PM EST

Of course it is not the kid's fault, and I hate to see kid's "pay" for the irresponsible behavior of the parent(s) - but where do you draw the line? It is within that conundrum that these pathetic jerks play. How many of these kids will grow up believing that 'society' or the 'police' ruined their family? I doubt either parent would ever tell the truth.

Hence, the tough love. While I wish it was different...so very different ..... we just do not have the resources (adopters, money, etc) to save them all. And when these types of fools see their 'safety net' is gone....maybe just maybe it will serve as deterrent.

              Reply#37 - Wed Dec 5, 2012 3:13 PM EST

Even worse, it is Eugenics. Eugenics has always turned out badly for society in general. It is never a desirable thing to have a small group or people ( relatively ) deciding who can and can not have children. This power is ALWAYS abused and ALWAYS results in innocent people being sterilized for ever expanding and arbitrary reasons.

It is a short jump from doing this to people who procreate out of control and doing it to people because they are simply poor, or they have body attributes that certain people in power dont like.. This is why such things are forbidden now.

The women also need to held accountable. Just think the moms are probably standing in a Toys for Tots line, as I type! Yes I am a woman!!

Wasn't my intention. It takes two, no doubt. But I would guess, that most of these children are in the welfare system, and the check don't go to them, it goes to their mothers.

You know, the judge may have unwittingly put some women in danger here. If this guy accidentally gets a woman pregnant in the next 3 years - which is very possible given his track record of unprotected sex with multiple partners - who's to say he won't resort to violence to terminate the pregnancy? He should have been put in jail - it would be almost impossible for him to procreate if he was locked up.

                            Reply#41 - Wed Dec 5, 2012 3:31 PM EST

The women who choose to sleep with this man and become pregnant have a responsibility, too. His conduct and that of a few other men, would change almost overnight, if women, who are the other half of the equation, would stop having unprotected sex. It never ceases to amaze me how so many women appear to be so very willing to settle for so very little.

There is no excuse for this guy. Then again any judge that would say this:

“Common sense dictates you shouldn’t have kids you can’t afford,” Racine County Circuit Court Judge Time Boyle said at a hearing, according to the Journal Times. “It’s too bad the court doesn’t have the authority to sterilize.”

Needs to be fired. He is advocating the return of Eugenics. There is a reason why eugenics was outlawed. It gave a relatively few people in society arbitrary power to decide who was and was not good enough to have children. This power was abused and ultimately extended to cover people who did nothing wrong, but where seamed to be undesirable.

The judge made the right call on the defendant, but he should be sacked for publicly making a statement in support of Eugenics. I don't say this to protect the rights of the guilty, I say this to protect the rights of all the innocent people that would inevitably be effected if ANY judge for ANY reason could sterilize.

Court ordered sterilization will eventually be used by the government for other reasons as well. Imagine an over weight person being ordered sterilized because they might pass genes on that will make their children over weight. The government might reason that people who have over weight children could be a burden on society and thus, that would be the reason they would be justified.

That is the future we face if we give judges and the government the power to do this, even if it started out with good intentions.
