Updated at 6:47 p.m. ET: A handcuffed Houston-area high school student shot himself in the head Wednesday while in the back of a police car, officials said.
The 17-year-old student was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital. He was in the intensive care unit after undergoing surgery, school officials said.
No one else was hurt.
The incident began when police were called to North Shore Senior High School in unincorporated Harris County to investigate a report of a student with a firearm, said Capt. Jon Moore with the Harris County Constable Precinct 3.
The student was searched, handcuffed behind his back and placed in the back of a patrol car but apparently still had a gun, Moore said.
The student then shot himself, Galena Park Independent School District officials said.
District spokesman Jonathan Frey gave the following account:
This morning at North Shore Senior High School, a student was arrested. He was searched, handcuffed, and placed in the back of a police car. While in the car, the student retrieved a hidden gun and shot himself. Paramedics were called and quickly arrived on scene. He was transported to the hospital still conscious when he left. His family accompanied him to the hospital.
Students at North Shore Senior High School remain safe. Counselors are available for students as needed.
In a follow-up email to NBC News, Frey said the gun was apparently hidden well enough to evade detection when the student was frisked prior to being placed in the patrol car.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office will investigate the shooting, Moore said.

In July, an Arkansas man fatally shot himself while handcuffed in the back of a police car. Officials say Chavis Carter, 21, committed suicide even though he was handcuffed from behind and had been searched twice for weapons. He had been picked up by authorities during a traffic stop in Jonesboro, Ark.

The police say he was searched, yet he still had a gun. Where in the hell would you hide a gun if police did a thorough search? Therein lies the question. It apparently was not a thorough search. This is the second time this has happened. I for one am going to ask a cop friend of mine just how this is possible.
Perhaps a gun small enough that it fit in the anal cavity, which is at a convenient reach when one's hands are cuffed behind one's back.
It is not possible.
I feel like i have read this before...
Laws need to be changed to include field anal cavity searches to prevent handgun violence from spreading.
I am Bob Costas and I approved this message..........
doubtful he had it in his ass although i have seen some pistols that fit nicely in a wallet. the cop that failed to find the weapon will be fired of course and rightfully so. there is a reason why they are called crushing searches.
This is the second case of someone who had been searched, their hands cuffed behind their back, placed in a police car and then they shot themselves.. Perhaps these two people are related to Harry Houdini, if not then something smells very fishy about this. The first case the mans hands were still behind his back when the police claim they found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. I don't know how many of you have had your hands cuffed behind your back but it is impossible to shoot yourself in the head in that position.
MireVO - you have, a similar thing happened just a few months ago in Arkansas:
Better yet, perhaps laws can be passed banning anal cavities, in the name of public safety.
Granted, the kid did this to himself, but.... This is simply the lackadaisical lazy azz cop doing a half azz job. Wouldn't have happened if he was searched properly and therally. I hope the cop feels like a dumb azz!
Unless he didn't actually shoot himself. I would do a through investigation on the cops story.
If one of the cops did it, wouldn't he have aimed better so there'd be no doubt about the result?
Another shooting, anyone suprised ?
being young and flexible and not a fat load there are plenty of people that can slip their hands under their feet while cuffed. no houdini needed.
I have a .380 there is no way you can see it in my purse, especially if I have a lot of things in it. I have a CCW permit here in Arizona and the photo by my name is my front yard. Now my 45 forget it :)
Blake, do you have some issue with the word "ass" or do you think using Z's looks cool? You're about as half-assed as the cop.
If the first case of the young man shooting himself in the head after being searched and handcuffed with his hands behind him had not been ruled okay....
would this one have happened?
I'm sorry, I just don't believe the first one, and I don't believe this one. What I do believe is that dirty law enforcement has been handed another way to take out annoying and troublesome citizens they don't want to fool with.
Another victim of the US silly gun laws. America is such a sad place when you think a gun is going to solve any problem.
Being a retired federal le officer and trained 1000s at the FLETC - - officers are taught to search thoroughly before transporting - if you find one weapon, continue to search for the second - if you find a 2nd one, search for a 3rd, etc. But- - officers are also human and "stuff" happens - - complacency, etc. Not an excuse just an explanation - - thank goodness officers or innocent citizens weren't harmed!
It's more than likely that he had a .38 special snubbie in the waistband at his back, and the officer didn't do a very good job at searching the boy. The total length of the snubbie is only about 5-6 inches, and about 2 inches wide on the cylinder. It could easily be missed.
@Victoria,
First off the US Constitution gives us the RIGHT to keep and bear arms. There's not enough people in office to change that. Sorry.
Secondly there were more than a few laws broken by this TEENAGER.
1. Person under the age of 21 in possession of a handgun.
2. Illegally concealled firearm
3. Possession of a firearm on school property.
4. Possession of a firearm while committing a felony. (discharging a firearm on school property
during school hours.
5. Possession of stolen property (I say this because it's more than likely that he is not the rightful
owner of the firearm, and thus makes it stolen.
I'm sure there may be more gun laws that this kid broke, but none the less he ignored those laws that are suppose to keep people safe. There are over 20,000 firearms laws in this country, and no amount of laws will prevent people from using firearms to harm themselves or others.
ga mimi
Anyone who has ever had a teenager has thought about shooting them at one time or another.
I highly doubt the kid was sporting a purse Melis
I see many posters grappling with concocting some type of scenario about how this student could have shot himself in the head after being searched, handcuffed and put in the back of a police car.
They first need to hypothesize the cops missed a second gun in their search, then suggest the student was able to slip his feet through the cuffed hands placing his cuffed hands in front of him.
The only problem is that the student was supposed to have shot himself in the back of the head. How is this possible with cuffed hands under any scenario however far fetched?
Does anyone seriously believe a person intent on suicide would shoot themselves in the back of the head? Has anyone ever heard of such an instance?
P.S. Numerous local news sources indicate the student was shot in the back of the head. For some reason, nbc omits this bit of information.
Hi, DB -
I never wanted to shoot mine... I wanted to personally put my hands around her neck and strangle her. Then bring her back to life and do it all over again... and again... and again..
This situation of handcuffed people being able to shoot themselves in the head, after being searched by the police, is highly suspect. Especially when they were arrested and had guns removed from their person to begin with.
If you were the arresting officers, would you be sloppy in searching them for another firearm?
here's how it's done for all you conspiracy folks.
Good Evening from Barbados Mimi
I can delightfully say that I thought about
However, patience and understanding went a long way in maintaining my "military bearing", LOL!
What did they say when they found a black man in Alabama stabbed 52 times? They called it the worst case of suicide they had ever seen.
What did they say when they arrested an armed man who 'shot himself' in the back of a police car while handcuffed? They called it an unfortunate mishap.
Sees Thru Gloss - comment 1.1 - actually, many right-wingers on Newsvine would be able to do that since the gun would be at the same place they seem to keep their heads!
For the conspiracy theorists:
I don't buy the kid was shot by the officer. First of all, if it was a deranged cop, he'd set it up where it would look like self-defense. He wouldn't make himself (or a colleague) look incompetent. As it is, it's likely that someone will be severely disciplined (if not out-and-out fired).
In addition, the suspect is (at this time) still alive. Rest assured if the police pulled the trigger that probably wouldn't be the case.
There's a pretty grisly video that shows a man being led into a San Bernardino police interview room. The officer gets the suspect a bottle of water, then makes a call on his cell phone and briefly steps outside. The suspect then retrieves a hidden firearm (appeared to be a 1911 variety of .45--not a small weapon) and blows his brains out with it. A bit of research revealed that the video was legit, taken from a security camera and released to prove the suicide.
Granted, this individual wasn't handcuffed at the time, but this kind of thing does happen.
It doesn't let the searching officer off the hook by any means, but it certainly does mean there isn't always an attempt at a cover-up when a suspect dies in police custody.
LOL... Hi, Jack
My point was that with my daughter, I wanted "hands on" satisfaction with the punishment. A gun was too impersonal.
Enjoy Barbados...
"If police didn't have deadly firearms on them, this would never have happened. They are there to protect and serve...not shoot and maim...they don't need guns!!!" My guess at what Bob Costas is thinking...
I Do Believe that there is MORE TRAINING in store for the COPS, on HOW TO SEARCH and CUFF AN INDIVIDUAL. A simple FRISK is NOT a SEARCH. Grab BOTH Ears, Pull Real Hard to get Your Heads Out of Your A$$es.
Sad to see this, not because the student shot himself (Darwin Award?), but because the apparent incompetence of the responding officer(s) gives peace officers a black eye.
While I do believe the search was not sufficient--My concern is the on coming lawsuit from his parents--AND YOU KNOW THAT THERE WILL BE ONE! Is it really the cops fault that the kid was arrested in the first place and shot himself. Our society seems to always place the blame on the people that really didn't start the problem. Of course, many have stated that they "search better or do something as drastic as an anal search"--give me a break, talk about a law suit! Remember when everyone was screaming about getting searched at an airport; imagine what this would do.
"Better yet, perhaps laws can be passed banning anal cavities, in the name of public safety."
Please don't give Nanny Bloomberg any ideas.
uncle henry:
Yes, you can move your cuffed hands from back to front, but, how do you move them back to your rear AFTER you shoot yourself in the head?????!!!!!
Reference the Ark, shooting.
Yeah I'm sure everybody on here wouldn't have missed this huh. There are some pretty small guns out there so you might want to hold judgment until the whole story comes out. I'm sure it wasn't a full size 9 mm pistol, hence the fact that he was still alive. My brother in law has a mini .22 handgun no more than 3 inches long, and that is because he has the attachment so he can actually shoot it easier, and it folds up. But of course all you armchair cops out there are perfect and would never make a mistake.
DK, you're an Idiot. I bet you would take a Knife to a Gun fight....
dietrichthekaiser:
What story did you read???? What does the cop having a gun have to do with anything?
And I will say the same thing that I said in that case. It probably went down like this:
Cop 1: Let's off this punk.
Cop 2: Ummm...okay but it has to look like a suicide.
Cop 1: (pondering situation) I've got it. We cuff him, put him in the back of the squad car and shoot him in the head. No one will suspect a thing.
Cop 2: BRILLIANT!
I applaud the cops for trying to save taxpayer monies for not having to go to trial, however these cops must have graduated at the same academy, HOW DO YOU MISS A GUN ON A PAT DOWN ?
as I'm all for my liberties and such and hate people touching me that I DONT know..thats why I drive instead of flying as much as possible..But you have to give it to the TSA if they do the pat down you couldn't smuggle a cracker in your pockets !!!!
"shot himself in the head with his hands cuffed behind his back"
????????????
I cant believe the cops expect me to believe this AGAIN!!!
I have had my hands cuffed behind my back and there is no way for me to reach my head to kill myself. What a bunch of liars and murderers the cops are becoming. No wonder that drunk @!$%# shot that cop and wounded the other this thanksgiving weekend, HE KNEW AS SOON AS THEY HAD THE CUFFS ON HIM AND PUT HIM IN THE POLICE CAR HE WAS AS GOOD AS DEAD!
I dont care what anyone says, there is no way you will ever convince me that this kid wasnt shot by the police officer for something he said after he was cuffed!!! It was probably enough to make the officer lose his temper and then just plant his throw away piece on the kid. YOU CANT SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE HEAD WITH YOUR HANDS CUFFED BEHIND YOUR BACK UNLESS YOU ARE REED RICHARDS!!!!
NO WAY, NO HOW,IMPOSSIBLE, I CANT BELIEVE THE COPS EXPECT ME TO BELIEVE THIS AGAIN!
But its not like we can do anything about it, If your a cop, your word is gospel and your deeds are unqestionable. Ask any judge, theres no need for a cop to lie, cheat, steal or KILL!
GOD THIS COUNTRY NEEDS A REVOLUTION!!!!
While serving in the Army I decided to sell A small 22 auto I owned. Some one reported this to the MP's & they showed up to arrest me for threats I was said to have made. With a 45 in my face, I made no objections & had no questions. After being searched & then handcuffed I was informed they had information that I had a gun & that they wanted to know where it was. I said sure, & pointed to my wallet. I said it's behind my wallet, help yourself, I'm not moving.
After the lieutenant stopped yelling at the sargent & informed him of his new rank (some what less than he had woke up with), he asked me why I had it, & I explained that I was simply trying to sell it to one of the guys before offering it to a hock shop. I was released shortly after. My CO ordered the pistol returned. I took it to the hock shop.
Lesson learned: Pay attention to detail. S-it happens.
It sure as hell *is* possible. You'd be surprised how many times police find things stashed inside their cars, even after removing a handcuffed prisoner, and how many times prisoners are found with weapons or drugs only when strip-searched at the jail. Pat-down searches are not always that effective, which is precisely why jails have complete strip searches before admitting prisoners. (And NO, it doesn't have to be up his a** to escape detection!)
I thought I was reading an old story but this is obviously a current one, again someone manages to shoot them self in the head while hand cuffed behind their back, and again the person was searched, I think just being able to hide a gun from a search is one thing but to be able to shoot one self in the head is beyond believe I can't get my hands to reach a position where I could do it, I just don't get it, if anyone here get their hands to that position I'd be really impressed .....
Mike - My father-in-law carried a rather large pocket knife through a TSA check point. The family was agast when we found it on him. Then we had to dispose of it in the airport. That being said, TSA did catch my mother-in-law trying to carry "fake" maple syrup to Ireland!
So now in the past three months ive read about, Anaked woman shot and killed for "Irrational acts" with no charges being filed. A 1 armed, 1 legged man in a wheelchair being shot cause he had a pen. with no charges being filed. Two people shot in the head in the back of the police car after being searched and handcuffed. with no charges being filed.
I can ALMOST condone the shoot first mentality of anyone being questioned by the police. You just dont know what they are gonna do to you once they have you in custody.
The only question remaining is, how will the cops finish the job they started? They left him alive.
Did they say he shot himself while hancuffed with hands behind his back or after being placed in the back of a squad car with hands cuffed behind his back? I have seen it many times (especially petite women) where someone slips they arms down their legs and next thing you know, the cuffs are now in front of them. And yes, all while in the back seat of a squad. So to all you naysayers, it's not impossible. And for the monday morning quaterbacks in here, guess you have NEVER made a mistake when it came to safety for yourself, children, co-workers, etc., and looked back and thought, "wow".
DietrichtheKaiser, man you got a problem!!! And for sure, a Kaiser you are not.
Protect and serve? what a load of crap, no where in this country in any law enforcement agency is there any mandate to protect or serve except in Los Angeles, there law enforcement will treat you like a king....
But protect and serve sounds so much kinder and gentler than freeze or name your beneficiary.
Three possibilities:
The cops lied and didn't search him.
The cops did a horrible job in searching him
they murdered the kid.
pick one. either way, these cops need a new vocation, Immediately!!!!!!!!.
its time we put real time video in the cars, streamed live...to the city it is "protecting". We cant get these lives back, not sure if we want to (poor mom and dad), but we can prevent the police from irrational decisions because they got a shot of adrenaline. The cops make too many mistakes that cost the tax payers millions upon millions and we need to protect our 'ass'ets...its time we put the same eye they have been giving us via DHS, to them...its right and its preventive. At least its a law on them not us.
Dawgfan-4710266,
This is what I don't get... Some thinking that passing another law will somehow prevent someone who doesn't obey the laws already on the books from doing bad things to themself or others. It's almost as if there's some kind of disconnect; aka the belief that because one is a law abiding citizen, all others attempt to be. For better or worse, this is not always the case. Some people are also more rebellious by nature (aka if we're talking about a troubled teen perhaps), then others.... Not everyone is in the same frame of mind when it comes to laws, authority, or doing as they're supposed to; else if no one was inclined to do anything illegal, there would be no crime in the first place, police officers or not...
Not setting aside, what could seem like a bit of humerious cheap shot, aka suggesting that this teen was gunning for the Darwin award; a troubled teen seems likely, a troubled teen who might or might not have been a stranger to brushes with the law before. But arguably a less then smart one, as what could he have possibly done that would have been worth ending his life over, rather then face the charges (where in all but the most blatant of offences such as murder, he'd be tried as a juvenille and face a much lighter sentence then an adult). The penalty would not have ended his life (most likely), or kept him in juvy hall (and then jail) his entire life, but suicide would.
Wet Willy does have a point, IF HE WAS HANDCUFFED AT THE TIME, shooting himself in cuffs in the back of his own head, does seem a stretch. Does it mean the officer had to shoot him? No... But it does raise reasonable doubt as to whether he could have shot himself as reported, unless he wasn't cuffed at the time he would have shot himself. Whatever did or didn't happen, we do have the police report to go on, no testimony from the other side of this case, and aside from that logic and reason as the only tools to try to ascertain the facts of this. Course, we're looking at a news article about the thing, so the police report's contents, as reported through the intermediary of the press here...
And to the person who suggested that if cops didn't have guns.... Yes, if they didn't have guns and they were having to do a bust on street gangs, more likely we'd have more dead cops, as the gangsters wouldn't necessarily just give up their guns, because the cops didn't have one. Besides, there are internal regulations wrt the use of that gun by a cop, and if question does come up, internal affairs can be a bit persistent on the matter....
Edit: server said message hadn't posted due to internal error up above, but it had, can remove duplicate...
Need more info. There has to be more to this than what msn is telling us. I'll reserve judgement and comment until more is known. Oooops, I just commented didn't I. My bad.
@parkwaync: I thought you WERE innocent until proven guilty. So how is the kid in the back seat NOT innocent? Remember, it's suppose to be about public safety first and neither the kid nor the public were safe while he had a weapon on him in the back seat.
he was reported to have a gun but they didn't search him well enough to find a gun he had on his body. Hmmmmm. Not a very thorough search. If he would have had a half a joint on him, they probably would have found that and treated him as a hardened criminal. Just lucky he shot himself instead of someone else or one of the cops.
Let's see.... hands cuffed behind his back, in the back of a police car, searched, shot himself in the head with a hidden gun.... RIIIIIIIIIIIGHTTTT.....
I just purchased the Golden Gate Bridge and I'm selling shares at an incredible discount. Just send me $500 dollars and your in. Can't miss....
This is not the first case of a suspect supposedly shooting themselves while handcuffed in the back of a police car..... Are the cops really saying they are so incompetent they can't find a gun on a person or are they becoming judge, jury and executioners?
Most men are reluctant to thoroughly probe another mans genital area. If it was a small gun and positioned right anythings possible.
It's very easy to stash a small gun. Most body searches are just that, they search all the usual places a gun has been hidden in the past but they often don't pat down the "Forearms" any more. It is very easy to strap a small gun to a forearm for easy access. Another trick I've seen on the streets is to have long sleeve rolled up to just below the elbow and the shirts cuff is holding the gun or knife. Many cops now don't check the arms completely, they start their searches at the armpits and go down. The question we need to ask is "where in the head was he shot?".
Outlaw pants that have 74 pockets - I could fit half my garage on those Hip-hop pants.
OK, I have to admit that my first reaction to the story was to look at the over fed officers in the picture that I am looking at, and think to myself that you can't be serious that those are Officers. lol. I mean come on people, is that the best that the dept. can do? It's no small wonder that those slobs missed a gun. Probably looking forward to not missing the next trip through the doughnut shop.
It's either that, or they are just flat out lying.
I don't really know what to think, either way is quite sad.
Guns to the left of me, guns to the right, here I am stuck in the middle with guns.
"Police are unsure where he retrieved the firearm from but during his subsequent medical exam at the hospital it was noted that the man's anus was 6 inches wide."
Like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAepItFDXc4
Good ridance to this hood rat. If we could get all of these nuts to shoot themselves the country would be better off.
IF the gun is small enough and he has a large enough orifice then there is your answer.
What size was the gun? That would help the story because we could rule out some areas to hide it.
I think the Editor who lost her job at a Cape Cod newspaper for fabricating stories has a new job! Sorry folks, I did not believe it the first time and will not buy it now....
I don't believe one word from the police about this shooting.
This is an exact copy of the other cop shooting of a handcuffed suspect in the back of a police car with no witnesses.
This kid was murdered.
.
Proof please. Or did your psychic hamster tell you this?
@UnitedStates1776
What's pathetic is that you use one lie as proof that you're not lying about something else. That kid, Chavis Carter whom you are citing WAS another suicide. He not only called his girlfriend from the back of that police car, she's testified that he told her he had a gun. Witness have given statements that the cops were not near the car at the time he shot himself. A demonstration video has been released showing someone of the same size and weight as Chavis that shows just how it was done.
I know, those pesky facts always getting in the way anytime someone wants to have themselves a cop bashing.
Chris, I LOVE The Crow!!!
Cops need to carry one of those metal detector wands like they use at airports etc...
They would have detected this pistol of they used one. I never seen a cop on the road have one in the past.
@FamousAmos-3755959
Thx! It's one of my all time favs as well.

I agree. But there is no way the police union would ever allow us, the citizens they are supposed to "protect and serve" to police the police. For instance, here in Massachusetts, about 10 yrs ago we wanted our police officers to submit to "random drug testing". The police union voted it down.
I propose we take it even further. I think that a law enforcement officer OF ANY KIND shoud have to go before a citizen review board or be re-elected every two years with thier FULL performance record up on public dispay. I also feel that a police officer should rotate through differrent precincts so as to prevent them from becoming part of the criminal underworld they are supposed to stop. A poice officer that rotates from town to town would have a hard time taking payoffs and maintaining illegal control of criminal enterprises if he was. Its hard to convince a criminal to pay you off if they know your gonna be gone in two years. Therefore the police would have to do his job more thoroughly knowing that the cop on his way in might be "untouchable" and be able to harm the others career advancement opportunities. As for the unfamiliararity of repeat offenders and history of criminal activities that would come of this, that could easily rectified by impecable record keeping.
I just feel that police have no one to answer to and way too much power. Something needs to be done about the "unquestionable" word and actions of police officers in this country.
We all know the cops would never allow themselves to be vidoe taped while performing their jobs and like the random drug tests they voted against, (kinda like congress voting on wether or not congress deserves a raise) it makes me wonder why. Why woudnt a cop want to be videod while on the job. why wouldnt they want to be drug tested. There are many other less meaningfull and dangerous jobs where people dont carry loaded weapons or have full authority to use deadly force that are under video survailence and random drug testing. ie. Home Depot, Wall Mart.
The Police dont want to be policed. Why? What are you hiding?
If there was video, we would know what happened here without a doubt and all questions and doubts about the police officers incompitence or corruption would be non-existent!
Handcuffed Teen Who Shot Himself In Police Car Was Not Fully Searched, Cops Admit
By JUAN A. LOZANO 12/06/12 08:25 PM ET EST
Cops are now admitting he wasn't fully searched.........mystery solved
@onlyyoucanchangethelaws............fantastic idea
Maybe he had some narrow hips and simply lay on his side and brought his hand cuffed hands from behind to his front over his legs and feet. Then he took the gun he hid under his thick, baggy pants, in the crotch. Police don't pat that area thoroughly, since they could be accused of groping. Escaping handcuffs is possible if one is really flexible....and guys don't have wide hips. Police really should start hogtying
I'm not sure why everyone thinks it's impossible to shoot themselves in the back of the head with their hands cuffed behind their back...if the gun was small and/or missed in the search, and could be reached from behind...say in the waisteband or by lifting a leg up and removing from around the ankle - all possible especially for a flexible kid...and then twisting the gun in his hands (still behind his back)...leaning his head back and arching, then pulling the trigger I think it is completely possible to shoot yourself in the back of the head....it didn't say he held it up against his head to fire, just that he was shot in the back of his head....
Thank God nobody was shot.
How dumb are these cops? Where did he have the gun that the police were unable to find it during their search.. Can we start forcing our little piggies to get college degree because this is getting embarrassing.
i have seen plenty of cops with 4 year degrees bomb out. you can have a phd from harvard but if you lack common sense and the ability to make decisions quickly you wont last very long.
What does failing to find a concealed firearm in a search of a suspect have to do with a college degree? These type of slip-ups happen all the time in virtually every career field, to people of varying levels of education and intelligence. If anything, this should be a call for more training at the academy, not a requirement that someone spend years getting a degree that has nothing to do with how to completely search someone for weapons.
How did this happen? Law enforcement must do a more thorough search BUT when it is done there are repercussions about
being too familiar" and inappropriate. To appropriately search an individual is a "violation" of one's self. So whats it gonna be?
I agree with Julian. You want a more thorough search, but then those get scrutinized even worse about violating our rights. Too many idiots offer their opinions and these are the consequences...damned if you do and damned if you don't.
Sloppy police work based on an assumption that a teenager wouldn't have a second weapon. That or a cop shot him and they are covering it up.Take your pick,it's one or the other.
Well it's Texas so I can see either one happening.
They didn't "miss" it. They only thing they missed was the kid's head.
Oh pleeaase! The student was reported to have a firearm. They were well within their rights to do a very thorough search. They'll get rightly damned because they didn't.
Yay for guns!! Let's "shoot" for at least 1 gun shooting death per day, per state, we are ON track!! ***Replace state with city, and offer still good.
Forvive my ignorance, but this story makes no sense. If kid was search and no gun was found ,why was he cuffed and placed in a police car. story did'nt say whether gun was found when he was search.necessary info need to render judgement.
This is ridiculous Houston Police are such a disgrace. Not to long ago a Houston cop shot and killed a disabled man in a nursing home that was in a wheel chair holding a pen (said he had a weapon). The Houston cops are sloppy and more than likely never searched the kid, they just took the gun they saw and put him in the back seat.
You would fail any reading comprehension test for a police academy. It was not the HPD, it was the sheriff.
Spike, I guess you would fail any reading comprehension test for a police academy too. It wasn't the Sheriffs office, it was 2 deputy constables who responded to the call. They are not part of the Sheriff's office. They have limited powers too, not like the Sheriffs office or HPD.
It said the Sheriff's office would investigate the shooting.
Smells fishy to me. Either these cops are so stupid that their story is true and they simply failed to properly search the subject, or they're lying to cover up having shot the kid themselves. Pathetic.
If the kid had a hidden gun, why would he shoot himself with it?
Time for the Reverend Al to show up and raise a stink.
Doesn't take long for the racists to show up.
You know Joe Blow, it is time that Reverend Al make a stink about this. This is the second case in six months that the same scenario has happened. If this case is not investigated properly (like the one in Jonesboro, AR), the same thing will happen again and again. When you have a winning formula why stop.
Keep reading TooMany, they will be out in force very soon and have LOTS to contribute.
Oh gosh where is Whitlock he should be on here claiming it was a white cop, a black kid and a conspiracy with the cop giving the kid a gun to shoot himself and further destroy the black culture.... OK so I can't help myself as there have been so many idiots raging lunacy about the "gun culture"and KKK conspiracies including the entire white race. How about parents and cops doing their jobs and what happens then will just be reallity.
They need to hire some TSA employees. They're experts at groping people; especially kids.
Sadly, after the TSA officer was caught pleasuring himself to the images that showed up on the full body scan, while the high school football team came through; this comment isn't without merit, or unfair. We have had a few cases in air ports that have people scratching their heads...
Now if that same TSA officer was working a different job, seperate from the government, that sort of behavior could not only get him fired, but could find him charged as a sexual deviant, with his name ending up on the sex offenders registry...
Houdini has nothing on this kid.
Nice to see another case of thorough searching procedures!
It's Texas... he probably had the gun implanted at birth.
As difficult as it would be to imagine a gun "up your rear"...during the search, all the police would have had to demand is that he "bend over and cough"....nothing generally stays there when someone does that...(used to work in a county jail).
And then the department will be facing a hefty lawsuit for sexual harassment and humiliation of a suspect in custody for performing a cavity search improperly, in public, in a manner that is degrading to the suspect.
He can cough with his pants on .... geeesh!!!
There's no way anyone can fit any regular handgun up their rear. That's ridiculous. They make some very tiny guns as more of a novelty item, but that's not what this kid had. If you go to a Houston news site, it says the gun was under his shirt.
Again, there's no way someone can fit a regular handgun up their butt.
Depends on your definition of "regular". Some guns, like Derringers can fit. Won't be comfortable, but it is possible. Most likely, however, this gun was simply hidden somewhere that got missed in the search, such as in a boot, strapped to inner thigh, in the back waistband, etc. Most likely scenario is that the pat down wasn't as thorough as it should be, the gun slipped through the cracks, and the kid used it on himself (or accidentally discharged it into himself when trying to retrieve it from its hiding place)
Something indeed stinks about this. Here in Ohio we had a guy handcuffed in the back of a police car who supposedly broke out a window and then threw himself off an overpass. Yes, totally believable - at least to the police investigators.
You may want to check for weapons?
Just watched a video reality show today where it showed a female handcuffed behind her back in the backseat of a patrol car. She kicked out the window and flung herself out the door window while the car was going 50 mph.
With people like you, it is lucky for the officer that there was a video camera recording the backseat of the patrol car. You can see her go out the window and then on the pavement before the officer can even slow down. But I bet you will say the video was "doctored" as part of some big conspiracy against the arrested female. Since you can't picture yourself doing something so stupid it must not be true and the bad, bad policeman must have done it. Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah. The real world we live in is a lot more messy than you know or care to believe.
I can't believe this could happen twice in one year.
Welcome to the New America..!
Also the home of the PATRIOT ACT and the NDAA.
The Gestapo would be proud!
What, pray tell, does the Patriot Act, National Defense Authorization Act, and the Nazi secret police organization responsible for a good portion of the holocaust have to do with a local law enforcement officer being a bit too lax in a search that results in a suspect able to shoot himself?
One less idiot.
I was arrested once cuffed and placed in the car. Got my hands in front of me and called my buddy on my Iphone. The cop was not to happy to see that. When he re-cuffed me, he made sure they were on tight. I had bruses for days. So I could see how it could happen, if he missed a second gun.
Wow this has happened twice now?
Scary huh?..
I don't think someone was doing their job to well. Damn.
Nevermind.
Slow down people, don't jump to conclusions with so little info. We can speculate that the cop got sloppy, didn't see the high school kid as a real threat perhaps. Think about all the things we do so often we don't even think about it, same thing can be said of a search by a cop. It's comparing apples to oranges but he could have taken the search lightly??? Next thing, did the kid try and kill himself or was the shooting accidental? This is a rather important fact that we just don't know.
He was killed by cops
The article said he was breathing and conscious.
Here's how it probably went down...The cop probably didnt even search the student. Being a student, the cop assessed the student as a minimal risk, and rather than leaving him face down cuffed, just put him in the back of the cruiser in quick fasion to diffuse the situation and began to take preliminary statements, name and contact information, and radioed in for a case number, etc.
Unless it is a felony stop/arrest, the search is not even a 50% NY frisk, routine questions: anythinbg that is going to poke ME, anything that is going to hurt ME...etc.
Officer is responsible for the safety of the suspect while in possession. Police Departments have been sued and lost for far less happening to suspects once put into custody and injuring themselves.
Beginning to be a chilling set of occurrences of detained and cuffed individuals shooting themselves in the back seat of cars designed to protect society from them. Provided it wasn't a two shot derringer, would be a terrible thing if the suspect had shot through the rear window (they aren't bulletproof) and plugged the cop, wouldn't it??
This is why I said,"They need to be RE-TRAINED in Proper Search Techniques. LAZY is NO EXCUSE. It causes Major Mistakes, with Deadly Consequences. Rather SAFE than SORRY. Also, NEVER take a situation at Schools Lightly, Hell, They're More Armed than the Cops anymore.
Hats off to the Barney Fife who gave him the pat-down, genius...
What color was this kid? This is the second time a kid has been shot in the back of a police car with his hands behind his back and handcuffed...c'mon now... has anyone tried to shoot themselves just by holding their hands in the back? Sorry...not possible...unless you are double jointed and even that would have to be proven...course nothing happened with the first kid so the cops probably figured...heh, it worked once, it can work again...
EqualityforAll53
Quit the BS, what color was the kid. Dont start with the race card stuff. The kid was dumb kid for bringing one gun to school if not two. Gun laws and racism is blamed way too much! Are you attempting to say this was racism? What if the kid were green? What would it be then? Poor search by the police and another dumb ass kid lost his life for another dumb ass reason. Dont blame gun laws, it is not leagal to sell a gun to a minor, which he was. If laws would stop gun sales then only the thugs like this kid would have them. What if he killed himself with a knife, should we blame knife laws? As far as color the only point you may make is a dumb white, black, yellow or green kid was a dumb ass. And yes something happened to the first kid, he is dead, another dumb ass thug with an illegal gun at least there is no chance of a innocent person being killed for his stupidity.
Green, now what?
is this really the officer's fault? The kid shot himself. If he went to school with 2 firearms, he had this in mind all along. fortunately, he didn't take anyone else with him. The kid had mental issues. He probably would have done something self destructive regardless
@XD Shooter....REALLY?? unless the kid had secreted a zip gun in his ass, there is no weapon small enough to bypass a half-assed frisk.
It IS the cop's fault.....for missing the gun. However, the courts have held that it is not the Police's job to protect suspects from themselves, only protect society from criminals.
So, the next time you are thrown into a squad car, you cease to be a part of society.
WHY did this kid feel the need to bring a gun to school? Something that extreme does NOT happen right away, this kid was at his breaking point, for some reason.
He could've already had mental issues, OR something pretty @!$%#ed was happening to him at school.
The fact that he tried to kill himself says a lot right there. He wanted to end it all, he had given up. Something was going on, and it was not stopped, or nobody bothered to listen.....what a shame.
i hope those policemen pat down/feel there wives or girlfriends better than they do a suspect with a gun....i still cannot believe you could miss a gun...
Ban handguns.
Get Real....
They haven't said so but if you ask me Republican states are using law enforcement to boycott President Obama. Home robberies are up and one home has been robbed 10 times and can be verified on kgun dot com and the Tucson Police have said its an insurance matter. I live out in the desert and it can normally take the Sheriff's dept anywhere from 2 two hours to a couple of weeks to get out here and if you need animal control forget it your on your own. The only way to get the police here quick is to say
One more NRA supporter gone—ironically they will argue this kid needed the gun for some reason. Now worries, we didn't lose the cure for cancer with this dip@!$%#. Go NRA! More guns in schools. More guns in malls. Make America like Lebanon or Somalia where everyone but the very poorest have machine guns!
Ignorant much?
Lorem,
Revisit history- you say the NRA is to blame? Remember back to a time when not all homes had firearms, and people accepted the wishes of the government...
The Government was the King of England, a ruler addicted to taxation for his own wishes, and the government agents allowed into homes and followed out of misplaced loyalty were the RedCoats.
You go ahead keep bagging on the NRA, and soon will come a day when one of your armed neighbors may save your skin. Then blame the NRA
Lorem is dumb!!!!! Their are thugs everywhere!!! That's why we need guns!!! Thug control!!!!!
he was akid, a dumb ass thug who had an illegal weapon, dont blame anyone but himself.
anyone looking to rob a house, go to Lorem's she does not believe in self pertection!! Have fun!!
This kid was a committed dumb ass. No great loss. I was in the military and actually was trained to use weapons. I've met a lot of gun enthusiasts that scare me more than the criminals. They are sloppy in their shooting technique. They have serious safety issues. Anytime the conversation steers towards community safety, the NRA steps in and cries about how everyone wants their guns. Nobody wants your legitimate weapons. However, even law enforcement unions, the experts in both guns and criminals have suggested that assault weapons and easily concealed weapons should be more tightly controlled. Only to be shouted down by @!$%#ty civilian pukes who want to feel like Rambo. You dip@!$%#s are as much at fault. BTW, send your dip@!$%# criminal friends to rob me. I will personally take them out. You will also never see my kid as a statistic for a gun accident in the home because I actually know how to secure a weapon in a safe fashion. Suck me NRA lifers, civilian puke wannabes.
was in the military?..........that means you too are a civilian....with no more right to bear arms than any other civilian........despite your condecsending attitude........you more than any other poster I have read so far, exhibit a Rambo attitude you human being wannabe
this from a person who admittedly owns guns himself...........you're no better than any other ......your postings prove that
Party at Lorem's! That big screen TV for Christmas, gone! Definally hack in and get address, phone number, and post it out here. There will be no security...at least no guns! I'll get a hold of some friends that can hack into the account and get the info out here shortly
I can hear it now. He is such a good boy...
Mamma is gonna sue the po-lice department for not preventing her son from shooting himself.
Actually you sound more jealous than anything.
Melis-a... What the ???
I'm sure the lawyers are already lining up at her door.
Guns and police aren't the problem. Thugs are the problem. Why not give everyone who can pass a simple literacy test a gun to protect themselves from the "majority".
Yes, "Rick" you are so right, so let us start with the police there, shall we, can you imagine if the student had shot the cop, then we would be forced to call the cop a hero!
