Subscribe to RSSUpdated at 6:47 p.m. ET: A handcuffed Houston-area high school student shot himself in the head Wednesday while in the back of a police car, officials said.
The 17-year-old student was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital. He was in the intensive care unit after undergoing surgery, school officials said.
No one else was hurt.
The incident began when police were called to North Shore Senior High School in unincorporated Harris County to investigate a report of a student with a firearm, said Capt. Jon Moore with the Harris County Constable Precinct 3.
The student was searched, handcuffed behind his back and placed in the back of a patrol car but apparently still had a gun, Moore said.
The student then shot himself, Galena Park Independent School District officials said.
District spokesman Jonathan Frey gave the following account:
This morning at North Shore Senior High School, a student was arrested. He was searched, handcuffed, and placed in the back of a police car. While in the car, the student retrieved a hidden gun and shot himself. Paramedics were called and quickly arrived on scene. He was transported to the hospital still conscious when he left. His family accompanied him to the hospital.
Students at North Shore Senior High School remain safe. Counselors are available for students as needed.
In a follow-up email to NBC News, Frey said the gun was apparently hidden well enough to evade detection when the student was frisked prior to being placed in the patrol car.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office will investigate the shooting, Moore said.

In July, an Arkansas man fatally shot himself while handcuffed in the back of a police car. Officials say Chavis Carter, 21, committed suicide even though he was handcuffed from behind and had been searched twice for weapons. He had been picked up by authorities during a traffic stop in Jonesboro, Ark.

It's possible the last arrestee the cops had in the back seat accidently left a gun behind on the seat. Happens all the time. You get arrested and the gun falls out of your back pocket on the seat. You don't notice it. Then when you get to the police station they take in you in for booking and you end up leaving it behind. You can try calling them later to get it back but they never want to go out and check the back seat for you.
This cop and whoever trained him should be fired as being incompetent, but then again....its Texas....duh.
Atleast they shot themself. Our state just went through 2 state troopers being killed in their police car by a suspect that had a gun in his waistband.
I'm sure if they gave him a decent pat down including his crotch and checking his wallet, the ACLU would say his rights were violated. The solution to preventing this in the future is pretty simple and won't cost that much to implement. Shoot all members of the ACLU. I'm sure you could sell hunting licenses and say those lawyers were going to eat all the local resources so thinning the pack is necessary.
Just think that it is a good thing they missed the gun and the only mistake that was made was the student did not do a good job or he would be dead. Pirate Dave

Maybe if those fat worthless constables didn't get out of breath getting out of their cars they could have done a better search. The arresting office will be fired.
This is great news for this poor miscreant's family - they will sue the police department and probably recover damages for the cops' incompetence. Long live the legal system!
i for one do not believe this story. if he was handcuffed behind his back how could he possibly shoot himself in the head. then they said that it was a good search bull puck if you search him you would have found the other gun. I maybe wrong but i believe that the was probably mouthing off to the officer,he got piss off and instead of walking and cooling off he shot the boy and try to make it look like he shot himself. if this isn't true as to what happen then i apologize but it just sounds very fishy to me.
You search a teenager and find a gun, most would assume that it it. He could have had a small 25 auto taped uo high near his crotch area....Yes if it had been a known felon, gang banger or an obvious hard case you might search a litttle harder...if you find one gun on a teenager or no gun in a pat down, do you strip him?
Thank God counselors are available for the kids. Im sure they never saw a teen with a gun before.
