James R. Irvine, 41, was arrested Saturday and faces one charge of child neglect for allegedly leaving his pit bull to watch a 10-month-old baby.
A Palm Coast, Fla., man has been arrested on suspicion he had his pit bull watch a 10-month-old baby while he went out to drink beer, authorities say.
James R. Irvine, 41, was arrested Saturday and faces one charge of child neglect, according to online jail records. He was held on $1,500 bond.
Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies said Irvine's girlfriend left him in charge of her child while she was away at work. After not answering several of her calls that evening, Irvine eventually picked up and said, "I'm watching the game," according to an arrest form.
The woman said she found Irvine trying to get into the house and that he was urinating on himself, according to the report.
He admitted to his girlfriend that he had been having a few drinks, but told her the baby wasn't alone because their pet pit bull was watching it, deputies said.
A bar employee verified that she had served him five Coronas and one Bud Light.
The baby was found crying inside a room with the door shut and the pit bull was sitting outside of it, the report said.

My mother's second ex-husband was someone that she thought she was in love with--so much so, that she left my father for him (not that their marriage was all picture-perfect, mind). The man turned out to be an abusive, drug-using alcoholic with a penchant for adultry; I distinctly remember her nearly running him over after she found him cozying up to a woman in a bowling alley bar. He sent her to the hospital at least twice.
Anyway, love (or what we THINK is "love") makes people stupid enough to trust. This woman was apparently so trusting in her relationship with her boyfriend that she put her child at risk. Surely there were signs before, because I doubt VERY much this is the first time that her boyfriend has shirked a responsibility to go out and "tie one on with the boys." The man clearly has no priorities.
Oh, and five bucks says the pit bull was his pet or idea, not hers, to begin with--an additional hazard to her child. To leave any dog, let alone one with an inherent tendency for aggression, alone with a baby is the highlight of stupidity.
I was for certain my x was the man in this story (if he went and had kids)...but no...there actually is two, two of the most stupid humans on earth. Even bad people aren't this flat out stupid.

Two things here - first, the guy was peeing on himself after having six beers. Six beers? What a loser. And second, it's people like this that give pit bulls a bad name. I'm sure this dog isn't being raised in the best environment and will probably be on the news one day for "mauling" that baby. What a shame. Send this scum to jail.

JXC, I bet you've never even visited one of the "confederate states." I had the blessing to live there for 20 years, and wish I'd never moved. I know it's cool and PC for hipsters to cap on the South, but you sound just like some ignorant bigot who makes generalizations about blacks. Knowing how many headlines there have been regarding pit bulls turning on family members, I doubt leaving an infant with a pit bull was the best idea. I know that there are many who will defend pit bulls and cite other breeds that bite, but you have to admit there HAVE been a lot of articles about pit bulls killing and attacking people. Thankfully, the guy at least closed the door and left the dog outside the door and not next to the crib. No matter what kind of dog, I doubt the dog knows how to care for a baby.

A backyard-bred pit-type dog's parent will have been selected for a higher-than normal aggression index, and the puppies will have a corresponding high adrenaline level. if they are not deemed desirable for the person who bred them, they're sold through classified ads, craigslist, and even crates set up by the side of the road that says "Puppyes $100" so their owner can make a quick buck without telling the person who buys the puppy that the dog has a high aggression index.
It's not the dog's fault; yes, it's in its genetics but those genetics are what we humans have bred into them.

Interesting, as my wife and I visited the sculpture in Custer County, SD a little over a year ago, Aug 2011 - right before I came down here to B'bados. We still lock on to the website that shows the continuation of the project by the Ziolkowski family.
It was and is fascinating! We donated and received a rock from the sculpting while we were there. It sits right next to the Conch Shells (the twins) that I retrieved when first Scuba diving years ago.

Just a thought here: The loser is in jail. If I had to take a stab in the dark as to how this happened, I'd say the mother called the cops. And she was at work when this happened. So it's not like she sits on her ass and draws cigarette money from the entitlement program. Maybe not such a bad mother after all? I'm inclined to give her the benefit of a doubt without evidence to the contrary. She obviously made a a mistake, but the fact the story is even in the news tells me she did her best to rectify the situation.

She would head but you when she needed attention, and upon meeting new people, or dogs, she immediately showed herself to be submissive, or type b, by rolling onto her back and wiggling, even to our tiny chihuahua mix. I know, everyone has a story of a nice pit, but then shouldn't you wonder, maybe some nice ones are out there too?

Going by the story, it doesn't seem like this man was the actual father of the child. The wording, things like, "Irvine's girlfriend left him in charge of her child" make it sound like this guy wasn't the father, but just a boyfriend of the mother.

'Stupid' and 'ignorant' don't mean the same thing. Stupid means that someone does not have the ability to comprehend even though he has been given information, whereas ignorant means that a person has not been exposed to information and therefore cannot act on same, but is capable of understanding. In this case, 'stupid' is accurate.

That dog (and, yes, a pit-bull) is a great deal more intelligent than that worthless drunk of a supposed father. The dog did, indeed, try to babysit. It heard the infant crying and wanted to help it but couldn't get past the closed door. So it sat there, waiting. It did the best it could.
The man should be jailed for life and the dog destroyed. Only a closed door saved this baby from a vicious man-killer attack dog pit bull. Oh yeah, the pit bull wanted to help the crying baby. The only thing a pit bull knows to do to a crying baby is to rip its throat out until it stops making noise. Only a psychopath would want a dog from a breed whose only purpose is to viciously attack and kill people and other dogs. This breed has no reason to exist in a civilized society. The entire breed should be destroyed and the sociopaths that insist on having them jailed for assaulting all the rest of us with their lethal-weapon dogs.
Quite probably, neither do you. Your comments are completely inaccurate. Pit bulls are not born vicious; they must learn this behavior. Raised in a loving, nurturing environment, they are normal dogs who just want to please their master/mistress.

You could leave a poodle with a baby and it would be just as wrong. (Stupid) people usually get pit bulls because they want a tough watch dog and then they treat it like a watch dog (more stupidity) and make the dog more prone to react with aggression to almost any circumstance. Dogs that are treated with love and respect WILL watch out for their masters, no matter what the breed. That being said, pit bulls should not be allowed to live and breed in Florida - it's a cesspool and problems are just waiting to happen.

The poor dog was probably protecting the baby outside the door, but the poor baby was probably hungry, tired, wet or poopy and just needed comfort. This guy would have been another accident waiting to happen had he come home drunk before his girlfriend did - that is, if he were able to get in the door! Hopefully, she got rid of him!
Ladies, always give your child precedence over any would-be suitors. Boyfriends come and go, but your baby is yours for always. Not all men know how to handle babies well. I don't know how many tragic stories I've read where the boyfriend kills the baby/child, because it starts crying and they can't handle it. Don't become another trite statistic. Keep your baby and your child safe. Either, don't date or have someone reliable (like grandma) take care of your kid(s).

That's because pit bulls are responsible for more deaths from dog attacks than any other breed so the press picks up on that. In this case it wasn't an issue, either because this particular dog was OK, It wasn't up for baby at the time or it was behind a closed door.

First, there is no such thing as a "PitBull". The American Kennel Club made sure to that in the 1950s. The press has taken to calling any news-worthy Terrier-type dog a PitBull, as it sells papers. Second, when you blame a PitBull, you are usually blaming the wrong end of the leash.
A real APBT (American Pit Bull Terrier) is one of the most loyal and gentle dogs in the world, and i speak from experience. They make terrible watchdogs, as they are too dedicated pleasing humans and would probably bring the thiefs the valuables just for a pat on the head.
APBTs are naturally aggressive by their nature, but it wasn't until recently that that aggression was warped into something bad by bad people. Ask any APBT owner.

I trust dogs especially the American Pit Bull Terrier more then people. This dog should be with a loving family not these idiots if they don't care about their baby then they don't care about the dog.
Anyone who is fearing for the childs life being left with a dog, regardless of the fact that it is a pit bull, needs to realize the child was being protected from anyone including the monster that made that bad decision. Read your history books though people. Pitt bulls have been given the shaft only just since humans decided to use them for sport fighting. The dogs themselves are loyal, obediant, loving, and oh yeah DOGS! They are not " with an inherent tendency for aggression" as one person wrote. They are protectors, workers family members, and one of gods creatures. So stop the animal abuse and spay and neuter the people who are ignorant.

KK - APBTs are not normally aggressive by nature to humans. They can be aggressive to other dogs, which is why they are used in dog fights, which is why some are trained to fight. Most pit bulls are actually used as bait, if they're not "fighters". Training consists of little social interaction, starving, aggressive by the owner, and not being spayed or neutered. The pit bull we had was not aggressive at all. She was spayed, obedience-trained, and socialized after we adopted her. Everyone was her friend, but she was deathly afraid of all cats, but ours. She showed nothing but respect for our cat, who was the real boss in our house. All 8 pounds of him.
One time, she started barking at me, sounding all tough, 'cause I wasn't paying attention to her. I tried to ignore her, to no avail. My husband came up and smacked her on her behind with a newspaper (no, not hard!). She immediately realized she was in trouble, stopped barking and went over to sulk by her toys. We still laugh about what a "tough pit bull" she was!
As gentle and sweet as she was, I still wouldn't leave her alone with a baby. I wouldn't leave any baby alone with any dog, not even my mini poodle, unless someone was there to watch their interactions. This poor dog was probably stressed out hearing the baby crying and not being able to do anything about it.
Had this headline for this story NOT mentioned "pit bull", there would be few readers. It garners the same attention as "shark"!
I was going to read the article, but didn't need to. I'm not surprised and I think this happens more often. If not a bar, then just home. We had a lady in the neighborhood, she left her young kids with two dogs. She no longer has her kids, they are in foster homes and doing well.
Blessed, if anything, it's a rare favorable mention of a pitbull. You normally only hear about them after the mauled someone to death. In this case, it's shown to be a good babysitter.

Go sell that line to someone who cares. Dogs are all Canis Lupus familiaris. Beyond that it's more subjective. To reasonably intelligent people Pit Bulls are dogs that look like pit bulls no matter what the AKC or any other group says, and said dogs are are responsible for more dog attack deaths than any other breed according the the CDC and other studies.
I agree but mostly because the owner chose to keep a questionable dog. Their are many dogs that don't have the means and/or temperament to readily kill children and adults. Pit bulls have the means and more often than any other dog with the means they also have the temperament.

That's a lot of made up nonsense an aggressive dog is an aggressive dog. You may be able to control it to some extent but it's always a risk. In my view any dog that seriously attacks someone without provocation should be killed and their owner's should be jailed if they knew the dog was aggressive. If the dog kills someone the owner should AT MINIMUM be charged with involuntary manslaughter.

@ David Puddy - A 121 pound "pit bull" is not an APBT, which as an average weight of 45 (females) to 60 (males) pounds. The dog you are referring to was overbred for a particular look, and/or crossbred for unnatural size, and likely pumped up on "juice" (steriods) for even more bulk, which could make it aggressive and unpredictable. So, before you start making generalizations about the 10 million other "pit bull" type dogs in the United States, get the actual facts about the incident. (I'd like to see a photo of that dog.) Unfortunately, sites like dogsbite.org (from which you may have gotten your story) post only sensationalistic stats and stories that are designed to scare people to perpetuate their own agenda for promoting BSL.
Diane - I agree. I don't know any pit bulls that weigh even close to 121 lbs. Our pittie weighed 50 lbs. They are normally not all that big.
At any rate, a human male or female, weighs more than most any dog and can kill, maim, torture and sexually abuse a child. The statistics regarding humans far outweighs any damage that any dog can do.
The dog, pit bull or not, was not the bad guy here. Unfortunately, when the term, "pit bull", is used in a news headline, it garners much more attention than if the headline said "poodle". In this case, the dog wasn't the problem, the human was. The dog was outside the door where the baby was. The human couldn't even get in the door and pissed all over himself.

The article seemed plain, the baby is HERS, didn't say it was THEIRS. Still, it is the same ole story, a woman takes in a man..a boyfiriend she'll call him, and make that relationship more important than her children's welfare. These so called boyfriends more often than not turn out to be untrustworthy bums that the woman will support. Over and over and over again the news is full of these stupid women who think they need some sort of man..any sort of man.. in their lives, entrust their children to them only to have the children beaten or killed. Any woman stupid enough to take in a drunken bum should have their children taken away and given to a good home. Especially if there is some incident as in this case. I have met men in my lifetime who seemed just great until you got to know them and if more of the fathers would take responsibility for their children then the mothers might be less likely to leave these children with their boyfriends but a lot of Fathers just don't want to be bothered so lets not blame everything on the Mom's please.
A lot of mom blaming here. But she was at work, trying to provide for her child. Obviously she trusted her boyfriend to watch her baby. We don't know if he ever behaved this stupidly before. From the way she told the story, it didn't sound like she had prior fear that he'd do such a thing.
Of course, sometimes women are forced into horrible choices. It's possible she had to work to feed her child, and maybe could not afford a babysitter, and having her boyfriend babysit was the only way she could work that day. It's possible her choice was between being broke and not being able to provide for her child, and leaving her child with someone she didn't exactly trust. She may have chosen what she believed to be the lesser of two evils.

There are probably several sources of help available - government, non-profit, church, etc. She could contact an adoption attorney who could find a suitable family to provide for the child - the new parents would pay the legal fees and probably help the poor girl get on her feet.
State foster care is not ideal, but most of it is better than this horrendous neglect.

Pits can be the sweetest, nicest, most loving pups out there. But they have NO concept of their own strength, they're fiercely protective of their "pack," and their energy levels tend to be a bit much for most to handle. A handful of stupid humans who can't take care of a plant, much less a pup, have really screwed over the dogs.

Yet the mother had a job, the dog had the sense to gaurd the babies door, the baby had the strength and energy to cry. It seems only the lay-a-bout was affected. It is a mystery what is causing the deadbeat lay-a-bout disease, but I have seen it in many states besides Florida. I fear it may reach plague proportions if guys dont aspire to be men soon...

Then she goes to work and leaves him to babysit this very small child; and I'm sure, she knew he would rather be at the bar instead of taking care of a baby.
