James R. Irvine, 41, was arrested Saturday and faces one charge of child neglect for allegedly leaving his pit bull to watch a 10-month-old baby.
A Palm Coast, Fla., man has been arrested on suspicion he had his pit bull watch a 10-month-old baby while he went out to drink beer, authorities say.
James R. Irvine, 41, was arrested Saturday and faces one charge of child neglect, according to online jail records. He was held on $1,500 bond.
Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies said Irvine's girlfriend left him in charge of her child while she was away at work. After not answering several of her calls that evening, Irvine eventually picked up and said, "I'm watching the game," according to an arrest form.
The woman said she found Irvine trying to get into the house and that he was urinating on himself, according to the report.
He admitted to his girlfriend that he had been having a few drinks, but told her the baby wasn't alone because their pet pit bull was watching it, deputies said.
A bar employee verified that she had served him five Coronas and one Bud Light.
The baby was found crying inside a room with the door shut and the pit bull was sitting outside of it, the report said.

What amazes me is how many women are willing to procreate with losers such as this gem......
I know, and then they wonder why they have so many problems and why people are down on them.
Each pit bull is different. My brother's was a rescued dog (pit bull, blue heeler), he is the best around children (no jumping up), but put your baseball cap on backwards and we will growl and not play nice (doesn't attack). He sits next to the rearfacing carseat in the vehicle and will tell my brother if the baby is sleeping or awake when asked. He also doesn't like it when strangers get near "his kids" which even includes my kids.
Then my parents pure bread pit bull is such a baby. He will trot to anyone that offers attention or treats. He will allow anyone in the house and will give driveby kisses to the kids, sometimes causing the kids to fall down.
My 2 yr old prefer's my brother's dog since he doesn't give kisses. We have left the kids in the same room as the dogs or inside the house alone with the dogs, but we are always in ear shot and we know the dogs will not bite (those dogs take a lot of child abuse and we watched them closely for the first 3 years and they have only grown more mellow). We also taught our children how to properly treat the animals so that they don't pull hair, jowels, tails, etc. Although I do have video of my niece pulling at the more aggressive dog, and had just continued to lay down and watch her. Eventually he got up and walked away. Never would have done that with my uncle's black labs.
I don't like the sensationalism of the breed. I agree with others that I wouldn't leave my child home alone with any dog breed. And a short run outside to get the mail is completely different than going to the bar.
And if ANYTHING had happened to this little girl - they would BLAME THE PIT BULL......
And wow - $1,500 bond - that means he had to cough up $150 for the bail.... they REALLY take CHILD NEGLECT seriously in Florida - don't they????

Government-run education is responsible for the dumbing down of all Americans and a lot of transplanted Yankees moving down to Florida didn't help either. I am a native Floridian - my family has been in Florida since before the War between the States, something you heathens call the Civil War - there wasn't anything civil about it. We have a saying down here in the south, "A person who is born and lives up north is a Yankee; a Yankee who comes south for a visit is a damn Yankee and a Yankee who moves down south to live is a G.D. Yankee." Please forgive me God, for cussing and blashphemy.
I would never want to live in a bug infested state like florida. Oh, the pitbulls are nonviolent- people just make them that way (eyes rolling).
Perhaps the screaming baby might have provoked the dog in some way. Bet this little bar fly didn't consider that one. His mindset is that the dog would protect the child if someone came near the vehicle. That's smart, real smart. Good luck in prison!
The kid wasn't in the car. He was back at the house. The same house this alcoholic @!$%# left abandoned to go shove more booze into his gut.
This guy sounds like a real loser. Hopefully, his girlfriend will dump his sorry a$$. What if that pit bull had not liked that baby or did not like its' sounds and it attacked the baby. Those dogs as well as other breeds have been known to turn on people especially babies and little children. What was he thinking? If his girlfriend sticks with him, then she is a real fool. He'd be gone in the blink of an eye if he was my boyfriend I'll tell you that.

Poor pit-Bull having to listen to a crying baby through the door and not being able to get in the door to bite its head off must have been torture.
Sounds like the baby was better off under the care of the dog.

actually, the pit bull was separated from the kid by the door. It wasn't really 'baby sittting.' I think the headline writer just put it in there for sensationalism and to get you to click and read the story. It worked, didn't it?

1) this would not be a national story if it didn't have the word "pit bull" in title
2) Pit bulls are bred for this kind of stuff. they were known as nanny dogs, early 1900's they were used as babysitters. All breed of "pit bulls" pass the temperament test higher than most dogs. So you are ignorant if you see "vicious dog" when you read "pit bull." This guy was in no shape right, he is completely wrong. But as the story says. The dog was sitting by the door of where the baby was. The only reason they are good for their fighting from white trash and thugs, is because of their size and their extreme want to please their owners. Plus ANY dog, animal, creature can attack at any moment. NOT just pit bulls no matter how docile you think they are.
The way the situation was related saying that the dog was sitting at the door makes me think that he was guarding the child. Woe be the stranger that would want to abduct or harm the child.
Agreed with Rweber. The dog was sitting in front of the door (no mention that it was distressed or agitated), likely to protect the child, who was distressed. APBT's are very sensitive to people, and devoted to "their" children; it would not have left the child alone on the other side of the door. With that said, neither the child nor the dog should have been left alone like that. (This has probably been a common occurrance for the dog.) Both of them should be removed from this situation and placed in loving homes that have structure and appropriate attention and care.

Well, just checked with my boss. His reaction? If this man had no legal responsibility for the child, then he is not guilty of anything and, in the State of Georgia, would face no punishment.....Can't arrest and charge a man for being a drunk, dumb ass fool.
Florida has incest and interbreding for sure. Keep all those losers in the southern part of Florida... sure he wasn't from Key West? Take the baby from both of them and give it love and an education to break the bonds of stupidity...

You and the rest of the dog haters need to stick to the story and not air your ignorance about dog breeds here, the story is about this jack hole not the dog, the dog did nothing wrong. I have a Staffordshire Terrier and she is awesome with my children. When people see her their like oh no a savage dog. What ever! She is the best dog I ever owned. She has never killed anything or bitten anyone, yet people like this but hole that wrote the story use her breed as a way to increase their stories circulation. Pits Rock!! They are LOYAL and gentle unless the owner trains/teaches them other wise. In closing all dogs bite!
Agreed. Everyone I have ever talked to who owned an AmStaff or APBT have had wonderful things to say about them. (Only one had to put her dog down because it showed dominent behavior toward their child, and they were advised by a dog trainer to not take a chance. She still loves the breed, though.) I just adopted a Pit-x a year ago, and she is the most AMAZING dog I have ever owned - and I have owned some great dogs. She is ALL of the above - beautiful, smart, sweet natured (loves everyone), playful, athletic, sensitive (Did I mention smart??). They are "high performance" dogs, and not for everyone, but those who have had the privilege of owning a "good" one (well bred, well trained, well socialized) usually say they will have no other kind of dog. They are much more popular than "haters" want to believe; I see at least one (or meet someone who has owned one) every day - more than any other type of dog. And BTW, I don't live in "the hood."
Either the pitbull was desensitized to the crying, it having occurred so much over time, or the pitbull is generally mild mannered in comparison to one pitbull I personally know. One way or the other, the door would have been opened and more than likely a bit torn up. Then they would have found the pitbull inside the room with the girl instead of outside. In any case, the pitbull would have had no negative intentions regarding the girl. However, the same can't be said for doors.
