Cops: Man left pit bull to babysit infant while he drank at bar

Flagler County Sheriff's Office

James R. Irvine, 41, was arrested Saturday and faces one charge of child neglect for allegedly leaving his pit bull to watch a 10-month-old baby.

A Palm Coast, Fla., man has been arrested on suspicion he had his pit bull watch a 10-month-old baby while he went out to drink beer, authorities say.

James R. Irvine, 41, was arrested Saturday and faces one charge of child neglect, according to online jail records. He was held on $1,500 bond.

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies said Irvine's girlfriend left him in charge of her child while she was away at work. After not answering several of her calls that evening, Irvine eventually picked up and said, "I'm watching the game," according to an arrest form.

The woman said she found Irvine trying to get into the house and that he was urinating on himself, according to the report.

He admitted to his girlfriend that he had been having a few drinks, but told her the baby wasn't alone because their pet pit bull was watching it, deputies said.

A bar employee verified that she had served him five Coronas and one Bud Light.

The baby was found crying inside a room with the door shut and the pit bull was sitting outside of it, the report said.

the baby was safer with the dog---that is better than what some parents do----kill the kid and then go out

I continue to be amazed at the loser guys some women hook up with. Why so desperate for male companionship? I love men -- good, smart, honest men -- but who needs a dumb, drunk loser in her life?

Time for her to leave him and time for him to get help with his drinking. No way would he watch my child again. He made a very bad decision, but the irony is at least he left the baby at home and the dog wouldn't let anybody take the child. Sounds like the dog has more sense than its master. The dog sat by the door. Poor child. Mom this time find a responsible sitter please.

He was drinking at the bar, not a home. It is way cheaper to buy a six pack of Corona and take it home, then pay for them at a bar. He has to be a serious alcoholic if he ran so short on cash that he could only afford a Bud Light.

Typical North Florida drunk. That White trash should have been accused of attempted murder. They love those dogs up here! Dogs, beer, and football. They're all that matter.

And the bartender made sure he got the guy good and drunk. He should be fired and jailed as well.

Cases like this make me wonder WHY isn't court-enforced sterilization legal anymore?

Cause it would CERTAINLY be a crime to let this man have any more children...

Well I HAVE to agree with Kris1234-3592742! Do research pitbulls were used as nanny dogs for along time! There are pics online with pitbulls next to children! These are GREAT DOGS! I have had two of them. Personally I am more worried about the little ankle bitters that get helded all day and think they are better then other dogs! They are more aggressive then alot of other dogs! Its not the BREED PEOPLE IT IS HOW YOU TRAIN THE ANIMAL!! ANY ANIMAL CAN ATTACK! I am so tired of hearing about how pit are bad dogs, you never hear about the lab that attacked the 2 year old girl or the beagle that got loose and bite a old lady! Those things happen every day! But its olny the bully breeds you hear about! Afew years ago it was the Doberman the Shepard then Rotweiler now Pitbulls. Whats it going to be next?! Come on people NEUTRE AND SPAY YOUR ANIMALS!! AND TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN!!!

Swan; don't know where you got your statistics but you're wrong about the percentage of bites being from Pitties. (Read the book about the dogs rescued from Vicks if you really want to know about Pitties). It's usually small dogs or Retrievers. I was surprised myself about the Retrievers but in doing due diligence about an article I was writing about dog training, that's what I found out. And they were called "nanny dogs" because people used to use them to protect and play with their children for decades. I've had 4 that lived to a ripe old age and when I get a place with enough room I'll be getting another one or two.

Sure alchmo, but lets check out those fatality stats, shall we?

In 2011 there were 31 fatal dog attacks. Pit bulls accounted for 71% of those. Eight of them killed their owner. One of the victims was a 15 DAY old baby who was mauled in his crib after his mother put him down for a nap. Another pregnant victim was a big fan of a group for "responsible" pit bull owners. How ironic. Her idiot husband even said he doesn't blame the dog and he wanted to bury it with the wife. How lovely. Just the sweetest things aren't they.

Now your chihuahua may bite you, but I am pretty sure you would live to tell the tale. Pit bulls should be illegal. I'm not too crazy about Rotts either.

I am not a pit owner. I did at one time have pits but had to give them up as I have physical issues that didn't allow them to get the exercize they needed to be good dogs. I rehomed them to a friend who had the energy to give them the proper amount of exercize. Often the problem is not the dog it is the owner being the wrong person for the dog. That doesn't mean I think pits are good or bad dogs it means that I believe you have to be realistic about which type of dog you own and how it impacts others. Be a realist. If it is going to be tied or inside all day the high energy level of a pit makes it neurotic.

Why on earth does it matter that the dog was a pit bull? The dog didn't do anything wrong. Just another opportunity to fear-monger about this breed.

What happened to the dog? Probably impounded by police, and eventually will be euthanized because of the breed's (sometimes deserved, often not) reputation.

Why can't we euthanize the guy? Protect the gene pool!

Another child left with the "boyfriend". Don't single mothers read the news? This kind of thing happens often enough, and sadly very often with trajic results.

Go Florida and take Texas with you. Send one to Cuba and the other to Mexico Jurisdiction. The US will be better off without both of these states. These two states are so bad, the young join the military to get away. Texas is number 2 and Florida is number 3 for high graduates joining the military just to get away from whence they come from. If it was not for sports, these two states will have nothing to offer the union. All we need is 25,000 signatures for congress to consider letting these two states leave the union. Now all we need is 24,999 signatures. America let's see if we can petition to make this happen.

Florida!!! Of course. Where else would it be.

Well, at least he didn't leave the dog in the room with the baby so the poor thing could be mauled on top of being neglected by a drunken loser.
