Gore was the surprise guest to introduce New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who spoke about the city's response to Sandy, which slammed into the city on October 29, killing 43 people, destroying homes, and knocking out power, mass transit and telephone service in huge swaths of the city.
Much of Lower Manhattan flooded from the storm surge, a danger many climate scientists warn will become more acute as the burning of fossil fuels contributes to higher global temperatures that speed the melting of polar ice, raising sea levels.
Bloomberg has long sounded alarm bells about climate change and the city's vulnerability to major storms. His blueprint for infrastructure needs, called PlaNYC, aims to cut the city's carbon footprint by 30 percent by 2030 and he has pushed to limit dependence on coal, a leading source of carbon emissions.
Bloomberg showed a picture of Gore and himself painting a city roof with white paint, a technique that keeps temperatures down and helps cut energy consumption.
The mayor also echoed some of Gore's sentiments about leadership in Washington, saying cities were "not waiting for national governments to act on climate change."
But Bloomberg added: "We had help from every part of the federal government. Everything we asked for we had. Now we've got to get some money out of them, but that's another issue."
The city has asked Washington for $9.8 billion to pay for costs from Sandy not covered by insurance or other federal funds.
Much of Gore's remarks centered on leaders in Washington, who he said had abdicated responsibility on carbon as humans treat the atmosphere as an "open sewer."
Gore, a long-time environmental advocate who served under President Bill Clinton, helped raise awareness on climate change by narrating the hit documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," which won two Academy Awards in 2007.
"Our democracy has been hacked," Gore said. "And when the large part of polluters and their ideological allies tell the members of Congress to jump, they do say, 'how high?' And we need leadership in the executive branch as well."
While saying New York must be more prepared for storms, Bloomberg was defiant that the city will not flee from its 520 miles of shoreline.
"Let me be clear: We are not going to abandon the waterfront ... But we can't just rebuild what was there and hope for the best. We have to build smarter and stronger and more sustainably," Bloomberg said.
New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo has asked for $41.9 billion in federal disaster assistance, including $9.1 billion for projects to prevent and mitigate damage from future storms.

I'm not a fan of Al Gore but at least he's smart enough to know that Obama is incompetent.
There are those of us, myself included, who believe mankind is rapidly destroying life on earth. In large swaths of Africa, lions are nearly extinct. The rivers and oceans are practically fished out. Industrial farming is killing us. We are the world's lone superpower. Environmental issues should be a priority of this administration. Not pie-in-the-sky stuff with solar panels or high speed rail. Real leadership is needed. Obama has not made this a priority at all. I share Gore's sentiments.
Compared to "heck of a job, Brownie!" Bush, president Obama is infinitely more competent. GM is alive, Osama is dead, Obama is very competent. He could have more spine for my taste, but he is competent.
Bush was bad, Obama is worse. GM is owned by the union and the government. And we borrowed the money to do that. We should have let them go out of business.
Find the sentence that doesn't fit with all the rest in the above paragraph by Bob Douglas:
a) In large swaths of Africa, lions are nearly extinct.
b) Industrial farming is killing us.
c) Not pie-in-the-sky stuff with solar panels or high speed rail.
d) Environmental issues should be a priority of this administration.
Obama is not competant, Obama called the Navy Seals, they got Bin Laden. The Navy Seals called Obama (2 of the dead in Benghazi), they got rejected. We need a President that only calls on the Navy Seal when HE wants them, rather call on the Navy Seal to make them the most effective as they can be.
Kurt's comments, Obama didn't say no to Navy Seals. The guys that got killer were ex-Navy Seals who were now Private Contractors. Get your facts straight.
bob douglas-1120933 - It's too bad Al Gore doesn't share Al Gore's sentiments. I doubt his 6,500 sq. foot home in California boasting 6 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms, a large pool house, 6 fireplaces, wood framed french doors, and carved stone detailing throughout is very energy efficient.
Get your facts straight. GM and Chrysler are owned by STOCKHOLDERS. The union made concessions which allowed the government loan program to success, but they have no ownership.
How do you expect people to take your comments seriously when you are so woefully ignorant?
Verno, that is STILL a NOOOOOOO to the Navy Seals. Once a Navy Seal, always a Navy Seal. The Navy Seals risked their lives for Obama in getting Bin Laden but Obama does not bother saving 4 in Benghazi as that Fundraiser in Las Vegas the next day was much more important. We have a Campaigner-In-Chief rather than a Commander-In-Chief.
Kurt's comments -
Might I suggest learning to type, and put together a coherent sentence, before you come back to dumb us all down again?
bob douglas -
So, um question. If we don't reduce the consumption of gasoline by cars by switching to high-speed rail (unbelievably more fuel efficient once it's built, pays for itself quickly, much better than having to go all the @!$%#ing way through Chicago to get to Houston from Dallas, unlike our current "rail system"), and we don't attempt to take advantage of alternative energies like wind and solar (yes, they can't handle all of our current needs, but they are making a dent already), then what the hell are we supposed to do?
To be honest, my money's on fusion technology. We're nearing the point of making polywell fusion net-positive, and byproducts are a few alkalines and lighter metals that don't have radioactive waste to store for thousands of years. But, even with that, it'll take
yearsdecades to build enough plants, and the price of fossil fuels is rising enough to make alternatives for residences, and commercial properties, look more attractive, as it should be.I know that the high cost of fuel is a problem for our economy. Shouldn't that tell us a little something about our economic planning? That if we rely too much on the cost of fuel, we're just @!$%#ing ourselves over? Fuel is finite. Regardless of how much oil we find here on Earth, it is finite. It is dangerous to drill for, on land and sea, dangerous to transport, on land and sea, and could be better used in durable products that will last for years, in my opinion. But whatever path we take, we need to recognize that continuously drilling and hoping that some miracle cure is going to come along, with India and China ramping up their consumption and pollution, is just another way of waiting to die.
Really genius? I guess you are unaware that 60% or so of the stock is held by the United States treasury and that another huge chunk is owned by the UAW. So who's the woefully ignorant one?
"Might I suggest learning to type" should be "Might I suggest you learn to type" would be much MORE coherent, Janstince. What a hypocrite.
"@!$%#ing" stated by Janstince is not very coherent but tells other that they are not coherent. What a hypocrite
Gore who? Ah yes, in the incompetence field they both are absolute leaders.
You totally missed the point. Gore is pleading with Congress and the President to step up and take the challenge of facing our climate change problem. Instead, you used it as an opportunity to bash Obama!
Skup -
not to mention "his 20-room, 8 bathroom Nashville estate, where he burned through 19 times as much electricity as the average U.S. household in 2007. The Gores also own a home in Virginia and another one in Tennessee."
He is so green . . . .
Shipwrecked,
You also missed the point. Instead of whining about leaders that you think are incompetent, show some competence by fighting for our shipwrecked environment! I know, you think that global climate change is a left wing conspiracy.
TO: ctviking who wrote:
Republicans learned nothing from last month's election, which is good news for Democrats.
Keep calling our President names if you like, but I can guarantee you it will end up hurting the Republicans come mid-term elections.
Republicans have NOTHING BUT idiots in their party, and the last one that occupied the White House nearly did away with this country AND everybody in it.
Pathetic idiots.
I think it's pretty obvious (even to Republicans at this point) that the climate is changing quicker than even the "worst case" scenarios predicted only 10 years ago.
Al Gore is in no position, however, to complain about lack of action while holding office. He had 8 years as the vice president and hardly lifted a finger in terms of true environmental policies.
And frankly, Obama has dropped the ball on this as well. He talks the talk, but hasn't instituted significant environmental change. I consider such items as new government fuel standards as more of a stop-gap.
If you want to get truly serious about this issue, you need to invest heavily, and I mean heavily, into nuclear fusion. This is the one true hope we have for a planet in achieving true clean energy. The French are light years ahead of us on this front.
Actually part of the point is, that Al Gore, the leader of global warming is not leading himself. He has multiple homes, flies around the country and the world. He is full of talk there is little action. That is the truth. The other truth is until we find an energy source that is as portable as oil is, we are pretty much stuck with it. We also have to face the truth that there is too many people on the planet.
We also have to understand that the higher the population density the more we are at the mercy of the weather and or the environment. There are many things we can do. One of them is educating people instead of constantly screaming that the world is going to end.
Explain to people how to recycle. What to do to lower their energy needs both at home and at work. There are literly thousands of things we can do. Saying that solar and wind power is going to save us is very short sighted. Both require many materials that we have to mine out of the earth. Mining that requires many chemicals that are made out of oil.
Let's see- why would Al Gore be vocally pushing the President on climate change? Could it be that he earns many millions per year through regulation and green technology investments?? Yes, I'm saying that Al isn't altruistic, he's a cold, calculated con artist who's cashing in. Many, many of his bits from an Inconvenient Truth have been proven wrong so he's got plenty of reasons to push to try to push his financial agenda. Remember he's an oil family man that's cashing in since moving on in 2000.
Unfortunately the President is likely to endorse more of Al's wishes as the aid his own- more control over the public by government and more of a global government.
Kurt's comments -
Herp derp derp herp derp. Herp derp. #@#$ing DERP!
Yeah.
It would seem that American Girl is the Pathetic Idiot in question, what with her sweeping generalizations, and no substance. Many, myself included, have born witness to her hopeless drivel as she continues to put her ignorance on display.
Ah yes, good old Gore with his huge estate and private jet. He is such a shinning example for the rest of us. Gotta love a guy that says one thing but lives another.....
LOL. You got that right P.Walker.
A lot of Obama voters are hoping for the economy and their jobs/prosperity to be saved. They did not vote for the Ozone man who would rather "save the planet" at the expense of their jobs and children.
How do you sell a product? You make people need your product. Cap and trade is the end game for Al Gore. He is creating a fictional commodity out of thin air and making you buy it. It maybe the biggest racket in the history of the world. Legalized thievery from every household in America. whose the bigger crook, Benie Madoff who stole 100s of millions from a few rich people? Or Al gore who is looking to steal 100s of billions of dollars from EVERY person in America?
Not to mention the science is very much in dispute. The father of global warming science , lovelock basically said all their models and science are wrong and they dont know what is happening. Before we take 15gs a year from every family in America to buy this fictional commodity, shouldnt we make sure we actually have a problem? Nasa satellite data shows the world has cooled since 1998 which the EPA is on record saying. Lets make sure we get one functional scientific model that is accurate before we financially cripple every family in America and make Al Gore a multi-billionaire
American Girl... you're pretty spot on with your post (as usual). The sore losers here haven't many outlets left to slam the President, or the fact the Democrats hold the aces this hand. So let 'em whine and accuse, nobody but themselves are listening to their blathering nonsense. Although, I'm kinda tired of reading the bitching about Benghazi and the Navy Seals getting Osama, whenever even the losers know that security was cut by a republican controlled congress and the military serves at the President's pleasure. They're just continually showing how ignorant and hateful they are.
Kurt - Learn the English language please, most of us in here do not speak redneck.
The smart person, President Obama, won re-election by the popular and electoral votes even with all that the GOP had to throw at him. I realize that hurts a few of you that thought Rush and Fox News was filling your belly's with the juice of truth, but now that you realize they where lying to you, don't you think it's time to put away childish thoughts and start learning the truth? You just got spanked and it's sore.
As far as the Al Gore is concerned, must be nice that he can focus all his attention on climate change in the midst of a fiscal cliff and GOP, but President Obama is focusing on one issue at a time, because that is all GOP will give him room to do at the moment. Once he puts them in their place, then he can start focusing on other issues like climate change, unemployment rates, tax loopholes, and others. I just love it when people cry because the President didn't drop everything going on in the news to fix their little issues they think is more important.
Well, nobody but themselves....and you....
Yet every day there are more criticisms of Obama....imagine that.
Keep drinking up the kool-aid and keep those blinders fixed on your sheppard, wouldn't want you to accidentally lose sight of the rest of the flock.
Does anyone else here,(either Democrat or Republican)wish that Al Gore would just go away?
The Republicans have their Tea party as a thorn in their side. The Democrats have Al Gore. Both parties worst nightmare would be Al Gore running for president with his tea party running mate.HA HA HA.
American Girl,
Still with blame the Bush lie, right? Last I checked, Democrats were in charge of Congress right when we fell off the cliff... You call Republicans idiots while you feel offended about someone calling Obama a name... Can we say "hypocrite"??
The article makes me think of the old George Carlin bit where he asks if there are any more arrogant people than the environmentalists who cry we are going to destroy the planet. We may destroy ourselves but this hunk of rock will be spinning around the sun long after we are gone.
You're wrong. It is state-of-the-art energy efficient.
Is Gore carrying on about man-bear-pig again?
And who gives a flying crap about GM unless you're a union worker? Btw, Bush triggered the incentive bail outs - just so you know, Osa err Obama cleaned up what very little was left over. Good for him. Also, Seal Team Six killed Osama. I'm so thrilled that OBAMA made the kill shot, and Obama planned every bit of the attack. Lord knows there wasn't a use for Panetta, or the military. Of course, no one should give the military credit. It's usually a Republican ideal. Nah, let's just praise Obama, get on our knees and open our mouths large and wide. - Don't say you're not doing it, because you are. And the first person to jump me about my post is clear evidence. (gasp, sucks doesn't it).
The man may be the USA president, but I have no respect for him and I damn sure wouldn't acknowledge him as my president. Only thing treasonous about my decision is the fact that the SOB is in office already and people worship him. Pathetic, grow a pair and have some free thought for a change.
JK1963 - Are you stupid or something? Did your parents drop you on your head too many times? Are you a redneck? Read a paper or read online, do something besides listen to Rush and Fox news. If you read anything besides that, you would have known that Bush senior left a deficit to President Clinton who turned it around to a Plus only to hand it over to Bush Jr. who put 2 unpaid wars and a bursting bubble not to mention a downfall in the economy and unemployment to President Obama. Since President Obama has been in office, the unemployment rating has gone down. If you read the papers at all you would know that as of November 2012, the Unemployment rating is at 7.7 percent. Lowest since bush was in office. READ A FREAKING NEWS PAPER OR READ ONLINE, BUT WHAT EVER YOU DO, DON'T POST BECAUSE YOU SOUND STUPID.
And if you look at the news the very next day, there are stories of how that number is not really that number....every time, and right here on NBC, imagine that.
Why would anyone care what Al Gore thinks? Someone so lame that he couldn't even win debates against GW Bush when running on Clinton's legacy of 8 years of peace and prosperity.
What, his fake, forced kiss with since-divorced wife Tipper at the 2000 Democratic Convention didn't impress you?
Al Gore won the debates, would've won the election to if the guys that Bush's daddy put in the supreme court wouldnt have stolen the election for him.
You people are so brainwashed. It was other brainwashed folks that did Gore in, and you just follow along. He knows what he is talking about and that is often the kiss of death with the ignorant masses. Look at Galileo for example. When you say things ahead of their time you can get criticized.
Being so concerned, he is trying to use it up quicker than most..
Al Gore, stop being a bully on the President on this climate change. I know, I watch your channel of CurrentTV & you as well as the washed-up liberals don't even have the balls to bring back Keith Olbermann. WTF is your problem ALFRED & who died and made you god?, trying to be like CNN or MSNBC Enough of this climate nonsense like GOPitifool Jon Huntsman & I'm glad your ex-wife left your losing democratic ass, just like Jesse Jackson's & John Edwards. You & Bloomberg should go back to your phony man-caves.
Analysis: We can't wait for the United Nations to have member Nations agree to their United Nations World Carbon Tax Treaty.....dad gum it.....sign legislation to CHARGE businesses for emitting Carbon byproducts into the air and MANDATE all businesses obtain CARBON CREDITS from MY Carbon exchange company so I can make money to cover the heating and cooling my 20,000 + Sqft home in Nashville and my private jet trips to Brussels.
BTW: It will help your campaign supporters in Chicago with their Chicago Carbon Exchange (CCX) business.
Doomed to late compounded pollution, all idiots look at new zealand we are getting what we brought on but dont forget money comes first
Baddog40, you don't read much do you? The Miami Herld performed their own recount including counting those hanging and dimpled chads using the exact method that the Gore camp propsed. You know what the results were? Bush still won. It was the FL Supreme Court that was trying to re-write the election laws of FL. I find it pretty funny that Gore and his camp were claming that every vote should count except those absentee ballots from the US Military. Some Commander and Chief he would have been.
Al Gore might be right if it wasn't for the Koch Brothers and their assault on the scientific community getting in the way. Obama had to keep this subject on the back-burner just like the GOP had to keep GW Bush away from political scrutiny. The future of renewable energy will be bright as we pass the days of Peak Oil which is also doing bad things to the planet. The future farmers and growers will be using earth friendly fertilizers, chemicals and various growing methods that will help them become sustainable and deliver much better crops to the consumers. Oil reserves will be tapped out somewhere around another 100 years, but the carbon emissions will have to be reduced before then by using better systems of burning fossil fuels if we are to preserve the best things we have on our planet. Otherwise all the other good intentions will be obscured by the blight from our lack of vision.
Uh, the debates don't matter, the votes do and Al got more of them than GWB did.
Are you seriously arguing over the 2000 election? You must be kidding.
I always heard there was a rape room on Gore's private jet-- wha? Oh, RAPS the President. My bad. This kitschy language crap and my mental autocorrect just don't mix. Can't headlines just say something that makes sense to everybody like "Gore tries to make Obama put caps on energy usage"? Well, that might be a long headline, but it tells everyone what the article is actually about.
Well, my vision of manbearpig having his way with Obama is ruined. Thanks trendy news opinionators! ...wha? They're calling themselves JOURNALISTS now? My bad. What's that, anyway? Fancy new slang for "Bad Comedian"? I'll start calling myself a journalist now then. :)
Al Gore is apparently looking for some attention. He is a wanna be. We should not waste time responding
to his comments. Just let him have his say, because he really is on the outside peeping in where ever
he can get a peep hole.
Republicans have the tea party but,the Democrats have Al Gore. That pretty much evens the score.Maybe Gore will find a tea party running mate in 2016.I don't think either party could swallow that.
Hahaha Gore? Al GORE? Hahaha...What a Hypocrite! He is SOooo terrified of Global Warming and Sea Level Rising that he just built himself a brand new Ocean Front Mansion!
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/greenhouse/post/2010/05/how-green-is-al-gores-9-million-montecito-ocean-front-villa/1#.UMFGUO8t525
Come on folks judge them by what they do and not what they say if you really want to know what they believe! Al Gore put his money along with his foot in his mouth!
Follow the Money Folks....Follow the money!
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.~ Abraham Lincoln (Attributed)
Al Gore is a Nobel Prize Winning Visionary.
Managing the global climate is like drivng a aircraft carrier. Right now the path we are on is cast. If we work hard, we can affect the climate 100 to 200 years from now.
All climate science is bunk right ? Was the Ozone layer real ? The hole inthe Ozone layer ? Then why ban Freon ?
People think this is a political quesiton. The earth doesn't know about politics. If the earth is warming and you are an oil company and you pay someone to say it is not warming. Turst me it is still warming. The earth doesn't know about oil companies or PR campaigns.
Plant a tree. Today.
The idiot, environmentalist whacko Algore just can't stomach that HE LOST in 2000! Al, you fool, you and your false climate data have been proven false! Just shut up and fade away! Maybe get another massage so you can assault someone again?
Why would anyone care what Obama thinks?
@Mike-3890110
The world would most likely be a very different place if Gore became president and certainly in a good way. We wouldn't have invaded Iraq and we'd be paying much more attention to global warming. The election left the country not knowing who the next president would be for nearly 2 months and will go down as a historic test of our democratic system.
So yes, I'm correcting an inaccurate statement made about it.
MUW--thank you for the link to the article about Gore's new mansion in Montecito, CA. I actually read it! :) Yep, it's a biggie all right, but he did NOT build it--he bought it off the real estate market. It sits in a hilltop community that has what the article calls a "stunning view of the ocean", so while he won't be washed away by rising ocean levels, he WILL have a front row seat--he can even document the ocean rise from that house. I think that the REAL question will be--will Al Gore green it up after buying it, in which case he will have taken an energy-wasting mansion that already existed and reduced it's carbon footprint, which I have no problem with as far as that goes. If he truly pays his fair share of taxes then I don't have a problem with his wealth either. As far as Al Gore having a cap and trade business, I will have to research that, because I had not heard that before. And I'm not sure that cap and trade is the answer anyway. Nuclear fusion may very well be the best answer we can come up with as far as technology is concerned.
And before people on this vine thing that I'm a big Al Gore fan, please understand--I did NOT vote for him when he ran for president--I did not vote for Bush, either--I voted for a third party. The way I see it, both the Repubs and Demos owe too many favors to big companies that fund their campaigns. But I do try to acknowledge when people do right regardless of their political party.
Ya gotta wonder how many times it's going to take for folks to lose their homes to floods, fire and the ocean before it begins to sink in to our thick skulls that we might oughta do something about the greenhouse gases before we're all dead. Then again, maybe we are all just a bunch of numbskull frogs sitting in that nicely warming pot of water...
Are you truly naive enough to believe that floods, fire, and the ocean didn't take homes prior to the industrial revolution?
inconvenient, you gotta wonder how stupid people have to be to connect all bad weather events with how much carbon dioxide man produces.
It's kind of going back to maybe Native American days when they thought the Rain God must have been angry with them, so that's why they got drought. Having a mythical explanation for all events, instead of accepting that they would occur no matter what.
I've got bad news, Al. He's not making the economy a priority, either. Maybe, with any luck, the royal family can score some killer vacations, and the President can knock a few points off his handicap, though.
About as long as it takes for people to stop building their homes in flood plains or stop building homes in areas that historically have wildfires. Or about as long as it takes for people to stop going to resorts that flood with Tsunamis that are caused by earthquakes (nothing to do with climate change at all).
"It's kind of going back to maybe Native American days when they thought the Rain God must have been angry with them"
You do realize that the noble native American were largely responsible for their own demise dont you. The native city of Cahokia was the size of London with a population of thousands before they overarmed. When the first Europeans arrived they discovered vast tracts of land that were clear cut to make room for farming for populations that had already grown to large to be supported. Climate change is not a myth. Climate panic is a myth. What is happening right now has happened before and will happen again and it has nothing to do with mankind. The Tsunami that hit India uncovered the ruins of cities that were built on dry land before the oceans rose, and that was long before the Industrial revolution. What we dont need is doom Sayers running around crying the SKY is Falling every time we hit a record temperature.
Chesty, you said, 'Having a mythical explanation for all events, instead of accepting that they would occur no matter what.' Isn't that akin to saying what is written in the BIBLE is a lie? Well there goes creationism right out the window...
Science is actually on the side of global warming! You cannot deny carbon emissions or their affects on our environment. It is not chanting to the rain gods, nor is it gradual change over time. In fact, it has been a drastic shift in a very short amount of time. We need to protect our environment as best we can based on what we know. I love conservatives that complain about our children's future when it comes to the national debt, but when it comes to the actual land we live on, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the air we breathe, it is dismissed.
What we need is Gale Sayers, running around for the Bears!
Well stated Jack D! The scientific evidence for man-caused global warming is overwhelming, and becoming stronger every year as we learn more and see more of the effects. What really scares educated, intelligent people (unlike Candlewycke) is knowing that the currect effects that we are seeing on the earth are only the beginning.
Just what do you propose to reverse it, truth, and you other climate change advocates?
Actually, I CAN deny such silly statements, Jack Dulouz. Or I could have Penn & Teller or the Mythbusters guys do it for me. Science is not on the side of global warming after it thoroughly debunked it. You claim conservatives don't listen to the facts but you conveniently ignore them yourself when facts don't support you either. It's a bias and finding one human that isn't guilty of denying facts to believe in their personal fantasy is becoming increasingly difficult these days. I blame TV, which was also hailed as the future doom of our society and it was conveniently ignored. Now look at how things are; you're going to tell me Honey Boo Boo and other reality shows aren't dumbing down otherwise smart, productive Americans who could be making stuff and building stuff and, I dunno, doing real research in laboratories and controlled environments?
Given that the head guy who came up with the global warming scheme said in his own biography that it was just a hoax to make him and his buddies rich, I don't put much faith in it or climate change. Yeah, the world will change climate on its own by firing off volcanos that deliver 200 years' worth of pollution that far outstrips the puny 65 years or so of industrialization we humans have managed so far. That's science - read up on it. The Earth does a much better job of destroying itself than we can... except for our nukes, of course. Nuclear bombs tend to be devastatingly effective, but fortunately for us, a single meteor can take out four to fifty times as much as our best nuke at the moment. Or one big storm that's not even a hurricane - that puts us in our place, I think. Ice Ages make our smoke stacks and diesel engines look like mild farts in comparison, and we've got one on the way no matter how much we use those godforsaken factories of ours. My advice? Quit being a pseudo-scientist trying to bluster people into wasting their time and money on red herrings and start helping yourself and your neighbors by investing in heating coils and geo-thermal power. It's good for you and it's good for the environment.
Did Al Gore write the story about CHICKEN LITTLE before or after he invented the internet? The sky is falling the sky is falling
An-inconvenient-truth-
Well stated. However, many of those commenting would rather deny the reality of climate change while protecting their crazy ideology. It doesn't matter does it. We all will go down with the ship!
I have read about it Mister J., and seen the evidence too. You blame TV for the global warming "hoax", but claim Penn and Teller and Mythbusters support your argument! Ironic that you use televsion shows as evidence, don't you think?
Jack Dulouz,
Science does NOT support CO2 caused warming. The IPCC R4 does not support CO2 as the main cause of warming. CO2 is a trace gas and is not a good absorber at the IR wavelength of the Earth's peak emission. We also do not know if the amount of CO2 has been a dramatic shift. The instruments and techniques for measuring CO2 levels have drastically changed, not to mention the locations and frequency of the measuremetns. Scientists are questioning if they have the CO2-Temperature correlation technique right for the ice core samples.
Here is what we do know. Changing how we use the land changes the regional climate. Our resources are limited. Pollution of our air, land, and water make us ill. Water vapor is responsible for right around 90% of ALL warming (IPCC R4) and can be proven via absorption chemistry. We also know that temperatures have been warm and colder, areas drier and wetter. We live on a dynamic planet. Gore only put out inconvenient BS that the gullable masses ate up like candy. Of course Gore had the help of Bush#2 in the sense that it all of a sudden became unAmerican to question anything and you had to be 100% for something or you were evil and against "us". And another fact, we must adapt to our environment or become part of the fossil record. Our environment does not and will not adapt to suit our needs.
Sierra, you're full of BS. Here's the deal: polar ice is melting faster because temperatures are increasing. sea level is rising because temperatures are increasing and also because glaciers and ice caps are melting. temperatures are increasing at a faster rate because of greenhouse gasses emissions by humans. It's really quite simple. Ask 95% of the scientists who work in climatology and related fields. Or fill your head with nonsense from some college drop out with a radio show. Your choice.
At least Al Gore spends time contemplating solutions, not spewing out a waste of hate muck. He is not attacking Obama either, he is being a spokesperson on behalf of those who are suffering as a result of disasters. It is a known fact that mostly everyone is on the same general page that these disasters have indeed taken place. The rest of the world knows about climate change, ecosystem problems, pollution in our oceans, radioactivity leaks at the nuke plants, sink holes, fires ongoing for over thirty years underground and other nightmares like deep ocean oil well leaks and the resulting extinction of coral and animal species. The list is much longer but that gives an example.
Some things we can correct, others are beyond our control. None of this has anything to do with the cult of personality and bashing a single man because of partisan bickering. There is nothing above that has to do with character assassination and attempting to discount the good works of a person over the years. If Gore would have taken over as Clinton left office we would be far ahead of where we are now with solar and alternative energy and we would not have the financial shortages. We need to get to work to make the money to buy our electric cars and solar panels to cut back our cost of electricity and...to pollute less in the future to save our own lives and make the change over technologically as soon as possible. Its the economy and the solutions, like Carville said, that matters and that is interesting here...President Obama knows this, and we are already on our way.
Oh, and Yes, Al Gore is right about a thing or two actually...
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/feb/18/al-gore/al-gore-optimistic-about-solar-energy-and-pretty-a/
Unlike some posters above, I would not dare to minimize the obvious and extreme danger posed by global warming. Take note: This year is the hottest year on record in the U.S. The tipping point is getting near.
My problem with Gore and the rest of the so called "friends of the planet" is that their solutions are totally unrealistic and clearly doomed to failure. It could be said "at least we are doing something" but traveling down a road doomed to failure is worse than doing nothing because it gives false hope and detracts attention from viable alternatives.
Simply attempting to limit carbon emissions will have little impact. Most of the developing countries are rapidly increasing their carbon emissions and that will not change. Additionally, the cost of limiting emissions too quickly would dry up valuable investment capital that could be utilized to implement a real solution to the problem.
What Gore and the others need to focus on is finding creative natural and technological methods to remove or lock up the C02 rather than trying to simply make marginal reductions in emissions. In other words, the problem requires an "engineered" solution.
In reading all of the comments, I am reminded of a Cree prophecy:
"When all the trees have been cut down, when all the animals have been hunted, when all the waters are polluted, when all the air is unsafe to breathe, only then will you discover you cannot eat money."
DonBo--you make a good point! Sierra--I gave you a thumbs up even though I do not agree with your whole post (#3.14)--because we indeed are making ourselves sick with pollution! That part I wholeheartedly agree with. But scientists are always questioning their techniques--that's part of the scientific process and always will be.
When it comes to our species as a whole being able to get our act together to clean up our planet, I only hope we can. But I'm not holding my breath. I am, however, doing what I can personally to help--I recycle/upcycle, and I have planted several trees at my house (I really like what JP-844134 suggested in #2.17--plant a tree!). I do what I can do, including utilizing good gas saving techniques when I drive my car, conserve electricity and natural gas at home. I not only consider it my civic duty, but it benefits my wallet as well. Slowly I make changes as I am able that benefit our planet. I am also preparing the best I can to be as independent as I can, growing as much of my own food as possible, learning to conserve water, and I have gotten into civil preparedness. While I don't live in a flood prone area, I do live in an earthquake area (earthquakes of course are unrelated to global warming or pollution, but preparing for them is part of civil preparedness) And I like what Anonymous Insight said : "Some things we can correct, other things are beyond our control."
Mr Mansion has a carbon foot print larger than 1000 people. Sick of these hypocrits.
You may as well learn all the facts. Mr. Gore actually maintains a "carbon-neutral lifestyle", by purchasing energy from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and methane gas to balance out the carbon emissions produced in generating the electricity his home uses. He practices what he preaches.
In addition, he completed renovations in 2007 that made the house much more energy efficient. Your "...larger than 1000 people" appears to be your own creation, as I can't even find the original myth you got that from.
http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/gorehome.asp
I guess my main point is that repeating internet memes, lies and half-truths until they sound plausible, doesn't make them true. I assume some people still think he claimed to "invent the internet."
How many of those renewable energy "credits" did he "purchase" from his own firm selling them, a business making him a fortune? And he said that he "took the intiative toward creating the Internet", which is pretty close, and the basework for the Internet was laid well before he was ever a Member of Congress.
Al is pretty full of himself. In Earth in the Balance, written well before An Inconvenient Truth came out, he decries hearing, as he writes, the sounds associated with the construction of yet another large suburban house (in northern Virginia) being created by clearing the forest with bulldozers and building access to it via yet another long winding concrete drive. I agreed with him completely. HOW DARE someone else want what he had already obtained. How utterly insensitive of them!
@Clotho
You're a moron. He says your purchases carbon credits from HIS COMPANY!!LMFAO. Oh and nobody has sceenthe place where he supposedly plants tries in china for carbon credits.
Are you that fing stupid?
rdonham, you're suspended for a day for violating #1 of the Code of Honor.
wow: The problem gore is facing is that he got government to require ethanol when he was heavily invested in the industry. He jumped ship at the same time that he realized there wasn't that much money to be made. Now he is invested in other environmental areas and isn't making any money because he can't get government to order that those things be used, thus no artificial demand means no money for him.
clotho: Really? Yup, I think you're right! I enjoy seeing his private plane flying overhead powered by the windmill on it's back. But, back to reality, you've apparently bought into all the BS. First of all, Gore has a larger carbon footprint (if you buy into such a thing) in one month than most people have in a lifetime. I realize that he pushed his environmental credits by claiming that he purchased carbon credits (a non-existent entity). But, as with all thing "green," they only look at certain things, not the whole picture. As an example, you know all the "recycling" that is going on in this country? I realize it's nice to say you are green because you recycle cans, plastics, etc., but, have you a clue how much extra it really costs to do all that? Around here we have recycling bins that get emptied once a week. So, instead of it all going into the trash where the trash hauler makes his one trip to pick up everything, we have the trash hauler making his trip, plus all the people driving making special trips to drop off their cans, etc. at the bins, plus the bins have to be picked up, taken to the recycling place and brought back (all by special trucks that don't run on wind). So, the "greeness" of recycling really isn't so green when you factor in everything. Same with wind power. The amount of energy and material to build those things is quite high. When you add in the maintenance and inspections and travel of all the vehicles, not to mention the damage to road surfaces from the special trucks to haul the thing in pieces to the site, then you can begin to get a picture of just how un-green green energy really is. Of course, then there is the fact that taxpayers are forced to heavily subsidize all this un-greenness.
Question, how does "purchasing energy from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and methane gas" balance out the carbon emissions produced in generating the electricity his home uses, or SUVs he drives or planes he travels in result in a "carbon-neutral lifestyle." Does buying those things take the carbons he puts in the air away? And, what's he buying that renewable energy for? Since your statement doesn't make sense, I assume you mean the "credits" that I mentioned. Regardless of his "offsets" (the word I believe he used), he's still using a ton of energy and has a large carbon footprint. And, yes, he has enough money that he can put out a campaign that amounts to "I'm rich and can do what I want, but to take the heat off me, I'll spend a little money to help the poor so you'll think I'm a good guy."
As I've always said about environmentalist wackos, ignore what they say and watch what they do. The fact is that none of these people act like they believe what they say. Just look at the global warming conferences. They fly thousands of people to Europe or wherever to party and discuss the dangers of flying thousands of people to Europe to party. All that ended up being is a UN conference to try to get rich nations to give money to poor nations. Do you really think that any African nation really gives a rats-arse about global warming when they can't feed their people and violence is rampant?
tyloer, thanks for suspending rdonham, he/she/it repeats the same tired old discredited right wing nonsense.
Joe, he got suspended for calling someone a moron, not his political views, geez lighten up dude!
You should be suspended as well.
Lets see:
1) war in the middle east
2) economy tanking
let me think...let me think... I am gonna talk about the WEATHER!
Al, your time in politics is up. Go write another book.
You clearly don't live in NY or NJ...the world is actually bigger than your town!
"Weather" and "climate" are not the same thing. But I wouldn't expect someone on the right to understand or give a damn about post-4th-grade level science education.
Republicans who choose to assail Al Gore as a prominent messenger on global warming, see above, use argument ad hominem to escape discussing what really matters, i.e., the very real threat presented by global warming to our survival. They're like the priests in the Catholic Church during Copernicus' time--we refuse to discuss Copernicus' belief that the earth revolves around the sun because that's sheer heresy/blasphemy. Republicans, who always seem to put profits ahead of people, have already accepted cancer as the price for the poisons emitted by modern industrialization, and now choose to blind themselves to science again because the Church of Capitalism doesn't tolerate heresy/blasphemy. They prefer listening to a few climate scientist who are paid by Big Oil and Big Gas to say that it's incorrect to believe what 99% of their peers believe, i.e., that our planet is experiencing global warming, that the melting of a slab of ice the size of the United States is unprecedented, that temperatures in the United States during 2012 were the highest ever registered in history, that hurricanes are becoming more devastating with the passage of time, and that if we didn't do anything about it for the last five -ten years (which we didn't), we'll have flooded coastlines in New York, the Carolinas, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, California, Oregon and Washington within a few years. It's like a great meteor is headed to earth, and earthlings are calling it fairy dust despite the vast majority of scientists' warnings to the contrary.
Yesterday's Republicans were highly responsible about environmentalism and stewardship of the earth in general. Today's Republicans are brainwashed imbeciles who are willfully ignorant and lack any courage even to attempt to address the most alarming threat to the survival of humankind in history. Their darlings, our plutocratic, job creating (in other countries only) rulers who put billions of dollars in campaign contributions at the disposal of Republicans, couldn't care less about the suffering or people so long as they continue to wring profits out of the resources they poison and exhaust. The unwillingness of industrialized countries to subsidize the transition from fossil fuels to reusable energy in poorer countries is yet another excuse to do nothing when something clearly must be done.
Ultimately, nature will settle this debate on its terms, and many people will die and will suffer dislocation to higher ground unless there's a radical change that doesn't appear to be forthcoming. It was nothing short of shameful and highly irresponsible that neither Obama nor Romney said even one word about global warming and the dangers it portends during the campaigns or debates. We can't seem to agree that profits and the loss of some jobs is a small price to pay for saving large swaths of humanity from the death and devastation that will be wrought by global warming.
If Gore would stop talking there would be a lot less Hot Air
He is right up there with the Kardashian's for trying to stay in the spot light.
Woops, read the title wrong.
Yep, Global Warming (climate change) did happen, Al Gore spoke. He is so FULL of HOT AIR that when speaks, the temperature increases
Yeah Kurt,
This is what you will be thinking and believing when the global ship goes down!
Some are already seeing huge forest fires and walking on parched drought-stricken land in 115 degree heat in the summer. Not a drop of fresh water anywhere...the wells full of toxic fracking fluids or gas...and earthquakes where none ever happen in states like Texas that wants to secede but needs federal assistance for all the hardship.
Oh well...just a bunch of hot air and Al Gore nowhere in sight. But that doesnt change the fact that there are fat cigar smoking pill popping agitated egotistical blabbermouths that probably could raise the temp in any room with their amazing shows of torrential misinformation on the radio...all for entertainment purposes only. Amazing with such performances under that kind of barometric pressure that none of them have conjured up an actual cloud burst yet.
Meanwhile, here are some of Al Gore's friends, yes, some people are actually hard at work.
http://www1.eere.energy.gov/solar/sunshot/index.html
Krehbiel, the "global ship" already has gone down. It is called the UN moving us toward One World Govenment.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - Obama Claus will never push global warming. Why? Because even he knows that it can't be one of the 1,396,294 things covered by taxing the rich. Increased energy costs will impact everyone and OC will never do anything to irritate his base.
he would if he could.
Leftwing scum are good at making things worse for the average person through government policies, and then blaming someone else for it. They usually have a scapegoat.
Nice to see you give the President credit for something. So you are saying you agree with Obama's environmental polcies! Very nice...
Jack a liberal?
We are doomed.
Bear... Not to worry.
"How can we be so arrogant? The planet is, was, and always will be stronger than us.
We can't destroy it; if we overstep the mark, the planet will simply erase us from its surface and carry on existing.
Why don't they start talking about not letting the planet destroy us?
Because "Saving the planet" gives a sense of power, action and nobility.
Whereas "not letting the planet destroy us" might lead us to feelings of despair and impotence, and to a realisation of just how very limited our capabilities are.
Let’s be humble. Let’s respect Mother Earth because if She becomes furious with our behavior, we are in trouble." Paulo Coelho
Gore helped set up "cap & trade" and has become a billionaire off it. Who says government work doesn't pay well?
Al Gore is one of the sorriest folks! He just has to remain relevant, so he now sells wolf-tickets! I would rather have had Mad Magazine's Alfred Neuman as president than Gore. The stupid SOB and his "lock-bokth" (yes, that is how he pronounced "lock-box" in the debates) remarks need to go away. The climate is, was, and always will be changing. We can slow down on polluting, etc., but Gore is much more interested in being relevant and making himself feel important than anything else........
Investing in Alternate Energy provides jobs for many, having a few more working on a new study provides jobs for a few. Today the choice is harder than it was 40 years ago, and making the choice 40 years from now will not be possible. (Energy shortage remember), (No investment means no future).
The guy who couldn't beat George W. Bush is criticizing the guy who won two national elections and kept John McCain, Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, and Paul Ryan out of the White House. I bet those four would have been ALL over climate change. Vice President Gore, how about you sit down to a big plate of "shut up'?
The Earth does not know who Al Gore is. It is just getting hotter.
The earth does not know anything about oil comapnies or coal companies or their PR campaigns. It is just getting hotter.
Climate change is a sanity test for humanity. Are we savvy enough to save ourselves?
By the way, are they going to build that tunnel to Russia ? Keep the entrance away from the water.
The earth is getting hotter because there are so many more people going to Hell
I am not a fan of Obama. Not by a long shot. But.... Al Gore, please go the hell away! You are delusional. Not to mention an effing hypocrite. Has anyone seen the stats on how much of an electricity hog his mansion is? Somebody needs to open a can of whoop-ass (figuratively speaking, of course) on this jerk.
steady - gore should go away - dude at least he is trying to make people address the problem instead of calling it a hoax - hoax- hate to be a republican who owns a ski resort anywhere around here or sells winter coats - hows business ? - ski season what ski season - who will hit the slopes when its 55 ....... and raining - the way things are going the ski season in the northeast will be maybe 6 weeks this year - and - so if you put all your cash in ski lifts and ignored the warnings - its ok file for bankruptcy - your excuse in court can be you listened to fox news -
Did you hear they took the word "naive" out of the dictionary?
Mr. Steady, check your facts on Gore's carbon footprint. Even if you were right, what is wrong with fighting to improve the environment? Is that something to criticize? Are you that polarized that you can't even understand someone's concern for the world we live in?
I can certainly understand someone's concern for how self-important that they are!
In 2006 Gore's Tennessee mansion/office used 12 times more power than average house (10,000 square feet). His gas and electric bill averaged a total of $2,000 per month. In 2007 he spent thousands to green up the house and reduced his energy use by 11%. Not sure if he did away with the heated pool, gas light along driveway. Gore has made millions with carbon caps. Enough to buy a 9 million dollar California home. He has the money to make his carbon footprint small. Without his money his footprint is huge compared to the average person. Does he really practice what he preaches?
Al Gore purposely pays more to energy offsets to make up for the energy his house uses. That's why his energy bills are so much higher.
If only we had bought carbon credits from Al. Then there wouldn't be a problem right?
Shame on us all!
Mr. Gore, if you are so dedicated to this philosophy, why didnt you bring this up during the election campaign?
Keep in mind, Mr. Gore, you supported a President who lied and was nearly impeached and you left your wife for younger women, so how does your credibility stand? How much can you be trusted?
You are as big a fake as Clinton and Obama.
How is Al Gore's job as vice president and his failed marriage in any way shape or form connected to concerns over global warming. This is obviously not a political argument, but expressed concern about the environment. If your child was diagnosed with a brain tumor, but you happened to be divorced, would it be fair to ask, "Why do you keep talking about your child's tumor, you have no credibility as a good spouse?"
I challenge all of you global warming deniers to read the book "The Inquisition of Climate Science" by James Powell. It clearly explains how all of you deniers have been duped by likes of a few phony "scientists" and their mouthpieces like Rush Limbaugh.
Why do 97% of credible scientists have zero doubt about man-caused global warming?
The planet is getting warmer and Al's marriage is stone cold?
The earth does not know who al gore is. It is just getting hotter. Al Gore is a nobel prize winning visionary who sounded the alarm in a compelling way.
The earth does not know about coal companies or oil comapanies or PR campaigns. it is just getting hotter and it is going to get a lot hotter.
The world population double since 1950 and will again in 30 years. What do you think it will happen ?
Priority number one is economic policy and reform. That right now is sucking all of the Cold air out of the room. As soon as the "fiscal cliff" is dealt with, the sooner the President and Congress can get down to substantial issue that remain unresolved such as Global warming and Immigration Reform. Unlike Republicans apparently, who will require pressure from the public and Administration, Obama can multitask. He has already shown at. And, BtW, the US has reduced Greenhouse emissions I contrast to many Industrial countries, inclusding China and Canada, which have increased theirs.
TheOresident will need not only to lead the US but ore importantly, the World in dealing with GW, which I agree he has not done so far.
David, sober up, then submit your thoughts.
Ore is very important! Without the miners extracting it, we would soon face a terrible worldwide metal shortage.
Yes, Obama has definitely shown Bush a thing ot two. His biggest accomplishment thus far has been increasing our national debt twice as fast a Bush did.
The shutting down of coal plants here while China builds and starts them every month is interesting.
Yes the economy and the debt.I still havent seen any real cutting of anything.Spending wise.
There should be tariffs on foriegn goods.Lower the corporate tax to really low levels like 10
percent and watch companys flood in.
President Obama,do something besides go on vacation! Stupid congress needs term limits.
Actually, the "fiscal cliff" HAS to be dealt with, because at both the government AND corporate level, it takes money to fix any problem. If we don't fix the 'fiscal cliff' then we will be trying to fix a problem using 'bloody stumps' instead of our 'hands'. This is another reason why this fix needs to start with the individual person (not that any of us have any money--most of us have little to none!) because we can use our ingenuity/creativity/hard work and sacrifice to fix our problems. Enough of us band together and help each other to do it (at the individual level), and we just might have a chance!
The president can only do so much. Until everyone is willing to park the cars, take transit, commute in vans. Get right off gasoline and fossil fuels, then it doesnt matter what any politician wants. Because they will just get voted out, so it wont happen. Not to mention all the stone-wallers in government. They will protect big oil to the bitter end.
Change needs to come from society, through sacrifice. If enough people start going green, and make it cool. Others will follow. Especially if not being green becomes uncool.
Theres an old saying, "dont crap where you sleep".
I agree--see my above post #18.5--
BTW, I heard the saying like this -- "Don't s&!t where you eat!" Both ways of saying it are RIGHT ON!
We can and should vote with our wallets! Commuting, planning errands better, utilizing safe hypermiling techniques when we do drive, upcycling, recycling, buying American first whenever possible (less fuel to get it here and it also helps Americans get/keep jobs!) then buy fair trade if possible if it's not made in America, because at least your not helping to support slave wages. Garage sale, buying used regardless of where it came from is also quite acceptable. I mean, the used goods are already here, and you are supporting a fellow citizen buy buying at a garage sale. Buy as local as you can, both food wise and local crafters. If you wait until the politicians and/or big international corporations do it, well, good luck with that!
Not a PBO or Gore fan...but, Al...please. You had your 15 minutes of fame and made millions off of this fairy tale. Please, just shut up. Barry's going to destroy this country long before your 'climate apocalypse' comes to fruition.
Dear Al it is past your time, fade away.
What a joke. Let's give Gore a few million more for his fantasized global warming b.s. I do believe in climate change, I do believe in natural global warming and freezing; but not man made. We have not been using fossil fuels long enough to cause any damage whatsoever. For every goofball scientist that wastes time and resources dealing with the phantom "man made" global warming; there are ten that will laugh at them.
If you want to know what's going to kill our planet; it's the extraction method known as fracking which is used in natural gas production. It's going to pollute our water tables and soil beyond anything we've ever seen.
I'd like to see those ten! The evidence does not support you Jack!
If I want to disagree with the consensus, I just claim that somewhere there are lots of scientists who agree with me. By the way, are you aware that over 74% of statistics are just made up, on the spot?
Jack- Where do you get your climate change knowledge? We have been burning fossel fuels for only about 150 years. Data shows that the CO2 content in the atmosphere started increasing at that time. The rise in the CO2 level is accelerating at an alarming rate. We currently dump 45 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year! Why should that be a problem?
brdman: Not to sound demeaning, but how can the CO2 levels not increase around that time, as we didn't burn them before that. And during the first half of those 150 years there weren't many cars or other engines burning the fuel, so it was minimal. I didn't say it's not a problem, all pollution is; but it's not causing the climate to change. And unfortunately we have no scientific date from eons ago to support any of this. I do believe we are in a global climate change "cycle" right now. And no one can tell if, in the next couple hundred years if we'll be freezing our a$$es off in May.
If you want to be an alarminst check out "fracking". It's going to destroy the land, water and everything associated with it.
Jack: There are other natural causes that change atmospheric CO2 level (volcanoes, ocean absorption, etc), so the levels HAVE fluctuated throughout history. But the current levels can only be caused by the burning of fossel fuels.
AND, we do know ancient temperature levels and CO2 levels from ice core data. (Read "The Two Mile Time Machine" by R. Alley. Excellent description of how they do it.
B.S. A good volcano will put out more co2 in a day than we can put out in a lifetime.
If volcanoes can put out more CO2 than humans, we should keep putting out CO2? Great logic! That is like allowing a murderer to go free because more people are killed during a war...culpability, my friend!
The earth doesn't know anything about politics. The climate is an aricraft carrier. It takes a long time to turn an aricraft carrier. Its going to get hotter. And there is nothing that can be done about it for probably a few hundred years.
The doesn't know about gas in your car, oil company profits, it doesn't know politics. It is just getting hotter.
Climate change is a test of the sanity of the human race. The earth does not care if we are sane or crazy. If you make the world a hot house and say it not, it still is. If you are a hillbilly and want a pickup with a V8 450 HP and 10 miles to the gallon, the earth does not care. It does not know who Al Gore is.
If you pump up the heat is it just going to get hotter. It is just getting hotter.
Does humanity have enough savvy to save itself? Or will we turn the earth into an ashtray and a cesspool ?
Your choice, you decide. 7 billion people now doulbed since 1950. Double again in another 30 years.
What do you think is going to happen ?
Dont worry! Something well balance things out.Like a plague or a super volcano or a meteor.Maybe society well just break down into chaos and many well die.
Each person should do what they can. An easy first fix is to make pickup trucks commercial vehicles. And sell them set up to run on natural gas only.Jobs well be created building the fueling infrastructure needed.
Every gallon of fuel used just pumps that more crap into the air from the tail pipe.I think the MPG of most vehicles sold is horrible.Im not for electric cars wich create and need more power plants to support them.Diesels in small cars would be great,we dont use them like europe does for some reason.
Houses need more insulation and cisterns should be required.LED lights are good.I think washers and dryers need to be run on less power.Refridgerators also.
Extracting natural gas is going to destroy this planet a heck of alot quicker than this phamtom "man-made" global warming. Look into Fracking.
ron17571--Yes, we all need to do what we can. I'm not so sure about natural gas as it stands right now--I believe that natural gas is only a viable alternative to the same extent we can make extracting it safe for our water table and environment. And it looks like we are doing a pretty dismal job of it right now--some geological areas are safer and easier to frack than others--but mistakes are being made in the more geologically complicated areas. I don't know if it is because our methods aren't developed enough, or if it's due to carelessness in trying to get the stuff out of the ground as fast as they can (in other words, that old issue of money and greed equals shortcuts). I agree about the house insulation/appliance improvements and cisterns or some way to further save water
As far as a plague, or societal chaos, or some sort of natural disaster like a super volcano or other extinction level event--that is always possible. Even something as simple as a massive EMP from the sun hitting the earth could throw a monkey wrench in society as we know it., and bring a lot of polluting human activities to a grinding halt. Trouble is, many would not know how to survive and it could bring on mass societal chaos--scary thought!
Any way you look at it, we humans are between a rock and a hard place, the devil and the deep blue sea, and we are so, SSOOO capable of jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.
Good point JP-844134! The laws of physics are the laws of physics, and are totally and completely and politically neutral, and will be what they will be and have the same results time and again whether we are here to experience them or not.
ManBearPig Strikes again!
How inconvenient. A holier than thou politician lecturing a holier than thou politician.
Comment # 25 deleted for grenade trolling. Don't, usasucs.
The Headline should be: Waaaah, waaaah, nobody is still listening to me
