'Blindsided': Iowa girls' friends, families reel over bodies

A community comes together to mourn the death of two missing Iowa girls after their bodies were discovered. KWWL's Shelley Russell reports.

EVANSDALE, Iowa -- The families of two young cousins missing for five months still were hoping the girls would come home, maybe even for Christmas, until the sad news arrived that two bodies had been found.

Autopsies by the state medical examiner's office are under way, but the remains are believed to be those of Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins, who were 10 and 8 when they vanished July 13 while riding their bicycles, Black Hawk County sheriff's Capt. Rick Abben said.

"This 100 percent blindsided us and it absolutely did them as well," said Sara Curl, a friend of the girls' families and organizer of several community events to support them.

She said the families were spending time with each other Thursday trying to cope with the news. The Collins family put up a tree and decorated it for Elizabeth, she said.

Curl helped put together a vigil for the girls Thursday night, one of many community activities that will be needed to help people heal in the days ahead, she said.

"I think everybody just needed to be together," she said. "Everybody was just wandering around going about their day not knowing how to handle things."

The vigil was held around a Christmas tree set up to honor the girls — with the hope they would be home for Christmas to see it — said Tammy Marvets, whose husband, Randy, came up with the idea. She said her 7-year-old son went to school with Elizabeth and rode the same bus.

Kelly Borel, of Waterloo, Iowa, puts an ornament on a tree during a vigil for missing Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins.

"He's pretty upset. He says, 'Mom, I just want to cry.' I said, 'It's OK to cry, honey,'" Marvets said.

Hunters found the bodies Wednesday in a wildlife area in northeastern Iowa, about 25 miles from Evansdale where the girls were last seen. Authorities found their bikes and a purse near a recreational lake in the city, and their disappearance sparked a massive search and kidnapping investigation involving the FBI, state and local police.

Abben said Thursday at a news conference that investigators are "confident" the bodies are those of Lyric and Elizabeth, based on evidence found at the scene and a preliminary investigation. He noted that the bodies are small in stature and authorities "have no one else that's missing in this area."

Abben said investigators were leaning toward reclassifying the case as a homicide investigation but would wait for the results of the autopsies before proceeding. He declined to say whether the bodies had been concealed or how long investigators thought they had been there. Relatives have not gone to see the bodies, and "there's no reason for them to do so," Abben said.

Officers from several agencies scoured fields, woods and ditches near the Seven Bridges Wildlife Area for any possible evidence in the case. Deer hunters apparently stumbled on the remains Wednesday in the secluded area, which is intersected by the Wapsipinicon River and is a popular spot for hunting and fishing.

Abben said investigators would continue combing the area for clues for several days and the park would remain closed to the public until at least Monday. "We will gather whatever is out there," he said.

The news of the girls' likely deaths hit hard throughout northeastern Iowa, which had rallied behind them and their families in the five months since they disappeared. Some residents in Evansdale, which is 90 miles northeast of Des Moines, had been holding out hope that they would be found alive.

"We are all grieving. We hurt for the families, and believe me it touches the community deeply because it is a small community," said Jeff Rasanen, pastor of the Faith Assembly of God Church in Evansdale. "It's a sad time. We were just praying for a much better outcome."

In a posting on her Facebook page Thursday, Heather Collins, Elizabeth's mother, said it was not the outcome the family wanted but now "we know our girls are dancing up with our savior." Collins thanked the community for an outpouring of support.

Micayla Weber, of Waterloo, Iowa, holds a candle during a vigil for missing cousins Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins.

When Zuhra Hodzic, 25, of Waterloo, saw that Facebook message, she was heartbroken. Hodzic was a volunteer on searches for the girls and other community activities.

"You're left with a blank," she said searching for the words and fighting back tears. "It's heartbreaking. It's devastating."

For her and many others at the vigil Thursday, the focus turns now to finding who is responsible.

"Our community deserves justice, and I hope our FBI agents and cops and everybody involved gets for us what we deserve and that's justice for the whole family and all of us," she said.

At the girls' schools, additional counselors were available Thursday for students and others, according to Sharon Miller, the Waterloo schools spokeswoman. Lyric would have been in fifth grade at Kingsley elementary in Waterloo and Elizabeth would have been in fourth grade at Poyner school in Evansdale.

The two were being watched by their grandmother at Collins' home in Evansdale when they went for a bike ride on that summer afternoon. Surveillance footage and witnesses have confirmed that they were riding nearby. Hours later, after they didn't return, relatives reported the girls missing. A firefighter soon found their bikes near Meyers Lake, and a search that involved hundreds of volunteers and several police agencies ensued.

An FBI dive team brought in special equipment to search the lake days later, and the case was reclassified as an abduction after no sign of the girls emerged. Months passed — as did each girl's birthday — without any news as police chased thousands of tips and explored theories about what could have happened. Volunteers held prayer vigils and hung pictures of the girls. An anonymous donor last week pledged $100,000 for information leading to their return and the conviction of those responsible for their disappearance, on top of the $50,000 authorities had announced.

Authorities had asked hunters to look for the girls in remote woods and fields this fall.

its been being played as an abduction around here for months, with supposed spotting's in Missouri and other points south .which made sense as the avenue of the saints ( st Paul to st, Louis ) goes right through there. Gave allot of people false hope.

GM Scooter.

It's time we implant micro-chips behind the ear of every child born or at least somewhere on their body.

Yeah, I'm going to get flack for this but just think of how many children would be found within hrs rather that be terribly abused not to mention that's the last thing they feel before being tortured & killed. Try to imagine what a child is going through not understanding what's going on and why. Oh man...

Now, I'm going to get the privacy people comment negatively but, if it should ever happen to them, they'll wish they did it. I'm also going to hear the people out there say, "The perp will just cut it out!". Whatever. Even if they do, the chip can be found almost immediately letting the cops know the direction they're headed.

We read "ALL TOO OFTEN" about stories like this but they can be prevented.

R.I.P. little girls and I am sorry technology could not help you out.

Emotionally blindsided, yes. if you have hope, you forego the emotional possibility of The loss. Hope has a sort of denial component to it for that reason.

Rationally you know everything can happen, and more so as days go by.

Terrible to lose a child accidentally, but in the hands of another human is not acceptable. I wish and expect the perpetrator will be dealt with.

My condolences to the families. RIP.

What about the misuse of children such as these two girls?

There are thousands of electronic devices that have the potential to be misused but they are encrypted to scramble everything so it cannot be misused. Yeah, there are the geeks that can figure out some of them but these geeks can also invent such a chip that cannot me unencrypted.

It's not impossible man. I'd rather give a shot than this happen to another child.

Sorry I.A.Scooter Tramp I have to agree with Creek Dog. The chip would benefit more for the good than bad. I have always felt this would be such an easy answer to the problem of Kidnapping or even the loss of an adult if needed. You could place the chip at random places under the skin. If it was your child wouldnt you be more confident in finding them if they had one? I know if i lost a child . My life would suck!

Creek Dog- your idea about implanting chips is sensible to me. Only thing is people who are paranoid about taking the 'mark of the beast' probably wouldn't for that reason. But for the rest of us, at least we could find our loved ones and that's so worth it.

There are other ways to track kids besides implanting chips in their bodies. They could be applied to shoes, clothing, in an ear ring or necklace.

Very sorry for the loss of these children and I sincerely hope they find whoever did this.

creekdog, how about executing child molesters or AT LEAST never letting them see the light of day again. Check and see just how many sex offenders are in YOUR area. If they let 'em out it should only be in the neighborhood of the judge who ordered it!

          CD, LONG & PRO

the problem i have with it is simply the govt would get involved and then where would it end? there have been way, way, too many programs and such started with great and noble ideals. look at what they have become......our prison system is a fine example, how many "repentant". "cured", "no longer a treat to" scum-bags have been released to go about their skulduggery? ...if more where executed would it end? of course not, but it would drop. if for no other reason then one less perv is alive.

but if micro-chipping has to be done use Gary's idea in post 1.22 that is a good idea and could be expanded upon.

I don't want a chip in my children or anyone else. That would be abused and eventually required so the government could track us. that is a slippery slope we should never tread on. Too many soldiers died trying to prevent the overthrow of the world twice that would have lead to this type of monitoring.

Start publicly chopping off some private parts and this will stop.

I like a lot of your choices above. Let the child molester out in the judges neighborhood. HA! I like that one LOL.

As for chiping out clothing etc... it's too easy to take off clothing and jewlery not to mention, someone else can be wearing them and you'd be looking for the wrong person.

Chipping out a molester. Hmmm, don't you think a few ice cubes and a razor blade can remove them? You know they'd do it.

Chipping is in a sense is invasion however (as ProFreedom says) it's worth it. Alzheimer victims are also lost all the time. Baby's are abducted out of hospitals within days sometimes. You'd be able to track them down in no time. Some people are murdered and never ever found. even dead, they could be found bringing closure to the family. I could go on forever but, you get the idea.

          @omg above,

You don't, until it happens to you.

I truely hope it doesn't. Good luck and keep an eye out and teach your children about story's like this.

          Have a nice day...

I don't think that surgical chip implantation is a good idea, but maybe some sort of jewelry, such as small earrings or a bracelet with a hidden chip could be an idea.

I also agree with the others about the need to keep better track of known child predators. It has been proven time and time again that these people will repeat their crimes.

As I mentioned above, I'm going to get a lot of flack.

            Road & Jen,

Read my higher posts. They answer your question. "Encrypted" & too easy to toss jewelry & clothing or someone else is wearing your stuff. Plus, a perp would most likly remove these items and either toss or burn them...

            Blah,

That's why I said, behind the ear or "somewhere else on their body" as in "hidden".

Nothings full-proof but, it's a start. Gotta start somewhere. As I mentioned before for the guys against it, just think of every story you read in the last 20 yrs that are the same as this one. Now, think if 98% of these kids were found & saved "PLUS" the perp being caught. It out weighs the fact that most are crying "privacy".

There sure as hell are "private" dead people out there that have never been found. Not to mention were tortured to death....

            VetinVA,

It would be by choice. You don't "have" to do it and only you would know you're chipped out. No pressure. Yeah, the wife would always know where you are and yeah, that would suck LOL.

Chips need to be read in order to be tracked, at this point in time, the only implantable human chip (Verichip) is a passive chip which must be activated by the reader in close proximity before the information can be obtained. If this technology is to be used, as CreekDog and others have suggested, to track and locate missing children or molesters the glaring problem is that you would have to get them within a few inches of a scanner in order to positively identify them. Life is not "Mission Impossible" or another Hollywood movie with still futuristic but not inconceivable inventions. Any government that watches you that closely is not a friendly one!!! Take heed because we are heading that way very rapidly in the once great United States and there are enough fools out there to ask for their freedoms to be taken away. Find the criminal/s who did this if there was foul play and bring them to swift justice.

I understand CreekDogs idea about chips, but to quote Benjamin Franklin - "He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither". The idea that it is removable at 18 may not be medically sound - when you implant a foreign object the body builds scar tissue around the object which could make removal difficult or impossible and maybe cause serious scarring. All the folks posting in support or against the chipping idea are adults - would you want to live as an adult in this country with a chip in your body that the govenment can track, or that predators can track. (Want to be chipped and have your wife track you to your girlfriends house?) Personally I think we could legally require child predators to be chipped, and require it within 24 hours of initial conviction, and allow public access to the tracking records.

i agree with the chip idea randomly picked places on the body would take to long for a perp to find. and we would be able to find our children faster and bring them home. have it be a choice and when the child is of age they can always have the procedure to have it removed. my thoughts go out to the familys and friends of this horrible tradgedy. hopefully they catch who did this so the family can have some peace and so that the perp dosnt have a chance to do this again. keep your children safe.

Whats wrong with doing away with them? They already know they will eventually get caught. They dont care. Public executions. We can kill the unborn child but not a certain bird egg (eagle as an example) or execute a sex offender / murderer?? Something is completely backwards here.

Why not give parents the option? You can get Lojack to find your car why not your kid? Maybe a good idea at least to put a chip in all known child molesters and track the sick minds we know of,plenty of those in the population, many repeat offenders.

I also agree with creek dog, I would have had gps micro chips implanted into my kids when they were little given the chance. And let it be their choice to have them removed at the age of 21 because at 18 they are still at risk of child abduction. It would be a great help for law inforcment to find people of any interest if it were manditory. It would only tell them where you are. And for those people who are afraid of government control, If you dont want to do time dont commit a crime.

Are these chips transmitters, or are they like the ones you put in pets? Pet chips only help if the pet is scanned for the information within the chip. It does nothing to locate the pet.

@Creekdog I agree with you.....But I have my mother Chipped though operation Lifesaver its just a bracklet that goes around her leg btw she has ad so when she wonders away they can track her but have to be on top of her and they change the battery every month. To inplant a tracking device in a child it would have to be the size of a smart phone and have to be recharged. If in the furture they ever do have a mico chip that could put out a signal strong enough to be picked up at least 1 or 2 miles from the child and have power to last 18 years. We just have to do the next best thing do are best to protect our kids and death to the low lifes that would or have touch a child.I would be the first to want this for my grandkids as for the mark of the beast it must be on the outside of a person to be seen by all.But you are right there will be people calling it that, they need to read the Bible before they talk about it.

First off, my condolences to the families. I can't imagine a worse feeling than losing a child. Especially in this manner.

As for the issue of "chipping" children, while I understand the reasoning behind it [I have kids too] , I have to disagree. Why should our children have to suffer an invasion of their bodies and their privacy in order to give us a false feeling of security? The type of people that perpetrate this kind of crime will do it regardless of any safeguards we place on our kids. Why not go after the source of the problem?

When there is little or no consequence involved in committing a crime such as this, why do we expect child molesters/murderers to change their behavior? Why are we seeing such an exponential increase in crimes of this nature? Could it be that sending them to prison for a couple of years and releasing them on probation isn't working?

There doesn't seem to be any way to rehabilitate people that commit this type of crime, at least none that I've heard of.

We need to remove these people from our society, permanently.

Here's a thought on chipping. Each chip could have a particular code embedded in it. The only way to activate the chip is by the parent releasing the code to whatever authority that oversees the tracking. That way, the chip is not tracking anyone until it is necessary and permitted. It wouldn't be unlike a cellphone. Just dial up and wait for the ring (activation). Then trace it between the towers. I know, I know, but it's a place to start.

When my children were much younger, the sheriff had a fingerprint booth at the county fair. Anyone could get their kids printed, and the parents(I) kept the cards. This way, no one's privacy was invaded. The chipping would be of similar use and only activated by the parent with their own secret code. It would protect the privacy of all involved.

Child molesters and abusers never stop. The same goes with battering spouses. Serial murderers--ditto. We need to remove these offenders from society--lock them away, execute them, send them to uninhabited islands--I don't care, just get them away from the rest of us. We can't keep putting all the rest of us at risk to soothe their depravity.

"The girls are happy "Dancing Up With Our Savior", as one Mother had commented..

I'll bet the Mothers would rather have their daughters back here, alive. The innocent, darling little girls would be happier alive as well.

Never get that kind of rationalization when it comes to kids who are murdered.

            Creek Dog,

What if these pedophiles get smart about it, and are able to hack into the system and find these children. Then they wouldnt be able to hide from sickos. Its a good idea, but any technology in the wrong hands could make the matter even worse.

"Oh, they have a chip in their right hand. I guess Ill have to chop that off before moving them back to my place."

And Hawaii2, the mother is trying to find comfort that the girls are happier now than with whatever monster hurt them. Sorry if it doesnt make you happy, but Ill allow this mother happiness over your snarky comments any day.

Hawaii2 - its called a "coping mechanism" and while some are better than others, none can really help when something like this occurs near a holiday. This is what gdimatt, the first poster, doesn't understand - apparently he hasn't been through it.

Sure they've been 'missing' for some months - but to discover THIS during the HOLIDAYS? This time of year will be bitter for the families for years to come.

How do I know? My best friend (who was like a brother to me) was missing for five months, all through the holidays. Then the winter thaw came, and so did his body - he was murdered. They found his remains on my bleeding birthday and that's when I found out the truth. Want to know why I don't celebrate my birthday? Because its been a completely ruined day for me. I'm alive and he's not; and my birthday REALLY makes that clear. I don't know WHEN this will go away, but someday it will. The way I look at it after nine years: it lets me remember that I'm still human and its a reminder that life is actually quite fragile.

God bless the victims at this time... ALL of them.

A micro chip behind the ear of every child might not be such a bad idea unless you consider the possibilities regarding how they could be removed. Quickly and painfully. I doubt the micro chip would stop a disgusting perv in need of a "fix". In this case no one thought much of the girls not coming home after several hours. The grandmother didn't worry too much because she "knew" they were together and they live in a tightly knit community where everyone knew them so if anything happened someone would notice. Point being that by the time anyone would have began wondering where they were they were most likely dead. Their bodies could have been found sooner, yes. But I have little faith that micro chips would stop the horrors a sick s.o.b. would have put them through before hand. The Micro chip idea would only work in recovering dead bodies IF the murdering whacko hadn't removed the chips and put them far away from the bodies. But then perhaps these chips would have made a record of every step the children took??? And every child could wear a sticker on their forehead with a warning, THIS CHILD PROTECTED BY MICRO CHIP. Almost a good idea. But not quite.

Alex I am so sorry to hear about your friend. I could not even begin to imagine. I love my friends beyond anything and just the thought of something happening to them breaks my heart. When your birthday comes again, do something that you both liked to do together, celebrate the wonderful friend that he was and take back that day for the both of you. Take care

I mention that it's not full-proof but it's a start. We "must" start somewhere. We cannot allow these things to keep happening every single day. We are reading this story but there are hundreds possibly thousands we don't know about around the world.

To IA.Scootertramp and Gary-2017851. Way up in these comments you talk about micro-chipping the predators. The problem I see with that idea is hmmmmm What predator should I trace when someone get abducted. There are hundreds of these trash scumbags in almost any area. What if they abducted a child, adult...... immediately take them out of the area, state, or even country.... Then what? Chipping children, elderly, and the mentally challenged makes all the sense because you can trace the person that was taken. Micro the predators also. When you see the two chips together, you know who took the person and can see what can be expected of the scum that abducted this person. Also by chipping the predators, you can make sure they are complying by local and federal rules. i.e. registering... Seems like there could be a way to make it that if the chip is tampered with or removed from the skin that it would set an alarm off at the monitoring stations and we can throw the trash back in prison and execute them.

I'm with Creekdog. We have that kind of technology, at least we could try. The micro crip could be placed anywhere on the body, so as the perp wouldn't have a clue. I don't know, but something needs to change.

Creek Dog....I agree with you 100%. We have them for our pets, why not our kids. I too, love my privacy, but I love my children even more. If I thought for one minute this chip would save or potentially save my child then sign me up! All of those with the comments about the criminals cutting it out or whatever...I would rather them have a lil cut than to be dead or never found. Definitely the lesser of the evils. Like Creek dog says...optional, not everyone has to do it and these evil doers won't know who does and doesn't have them anyway. I say protect the children at all costs!

I've always liked the idea of chipping but only if we could keep the government out of it. I think zapper has the best plan (so far). I could get on board with THAT.

                Now, back 2 the story.....

Am I the only Iowa person who remembers when this story first broke? It took them (law enforcement) something ridiculous-like 4 days!-to make this an abduction. Sadly, I knew as soon as the news mentioned the purse left behind. A TIMELY Amber Alert MIGHT have saved these darlings.

The Iowa Gestapo isn't looking good right now. Dumbazzes.

The chipping idea has actually been discussed for years. It started the same time that chips were invented for pets.

I find it completely ridiculous that people are all for chipping their pets but hell fire against doing it to their kids. You fingerprint your kids, and put pictures together for an abduction/missing package for the police, but can't consider a chip?

Maybe when you have stood in front of a grieving family member that had their child abducted and killed, and looked into their hurting eyes instead of just reading about it on the internet the light switch may turn on.

I would think that if the chip saved 1 child's life the discussion would be over. At least between intelligent and non paranoid people anyway.

Not much really gets to me these days after years and years of seeing what people do to each other but this story actually made me cry. I was hoping against hope for a happy ending to this.

I am so sorry for the family, I will continue to pray for them. They should trust that their babies are playing with the angels. I agree that a monitoring device should be placed on the child, their shoes, a bracelet, or something, not implanted in the child. Monitoring pedophiles does not work. Many wear ankle bracelets, but without the police personnel to monitor them they go and do what they want. We have that problem here with the revolving door jails. They continue to stalk and harm children with little or no repercussions. We need to jail them and throw away the key, they will never change!

                  #1.66 - Fri Dec 7, 2012 1:28 PM EST

I totally disagree. The only thing that will do is make the parents feel more secure, it will not make the children any safer and it is wrong to make an unnecessary decision that will affect that child for the rest of their life. Things like this rarely happened years ago because everyone watched out for everyone else. Neighborhoods would be filled with kids outdoors playing and children were rarely alone. Adults would be sitting out on their porch or taking a walk. We pretty much knew everyone in the neighborhood. Even couples who didn't have children watched out for the children in their neighborhoods. It doesn't necessarily take a community to raise a child but it does take a community to keep a child safe. How many people turn their head the other way when there is a crime being committed because they don't want to get involved? It makes me wonder how many people have witnessed a crime but have never come forward because they just didn't want to get involved. How many children could have been saved or how many criminals could have been found and prosecuted if everyone had gotten involved. Just think of the woman that was stabbed to death in the courtyard of her apartment building and not one single person called the police. If everyone would look out for each other like we used to many of these crimes could be thwarted.

And yes, I have been touched by the tragedy of a child gone missing. It wasn't my child but it was the child of a good friend. She was 14 and she went missing from a party that her brother was having in their home. The family did not have to wait as long as many to find out what happened as she was found the next morning with her throat slit. Her murderer was never found.

My answer is satellite video surveillance on every corner on every path, I don't believe its far fetched, we have stealth, we have a cloaking devise now that bends light and makes you invisible, our technology is getting so light and small there is really not much we won't be able to do..Help will come soon I hope.

@Creek Dog and others regarding implanted "microchips." Unfortunately, devices like those you describe would not be of much use for locating missing people, especially in the wilderness or outside of urban areas. They would, however, be very useful for identification. But regarding your suggestion: 1. RF ID devices would be good for tracking people...only as long as the associated detection devices are placed, basically, "everywhere." It would also require a huge network across the land to carry and route the information, and huge server farms to keep up with all of the information. 2. A radio transponder that would communicate GPS and ID or other information to base stations or satellites would be too large to insert under the skin, and the radio signal would be attenuated greatly before the signal could leave the person's body. So, our technology (at least the technology known outside the military and espionage) isn't quite there yet to do what you have proposed. Not yet. Maybe soon.

Yeah, no kidding! Tell gdimatt something ze couldn't already figure out. I cannot speak for gdimatt, but the way I view it, it was irrational for them to hold on to hope like they did. It was because of this irrational holding on to hope that they now feel "blindsided." If they'd had faced reality sooner, they wouldn't be feeling this way now. Yet, you would excuse them for being irrational? And wish death upon gdimatt besides?

To which you later said, "I save lives, what about you?" So, that means you have a license to wish people dead? Or are you trying to make this into a cock measuring contest? That's quite the logical "reasoning" you've presented. (Actually, that's two non sequiters you have presented as arguments thus far. To which I will suggest that you stick to your day job.)

GOD brought the two little girls back together...I think you are right, and most likely it was the christian god. His generosity and compassion are evident here, bringing forth news of their stolen loved ones at the height of the holiday season. Although too weak or distracted to have prevented the entire episode for occurring in the first place, he will certainly be compassionate enough to forgive the perpetrators if they would only let Jesus into their hearts.

And this man that did this can assume all responsibility for his actions and answer for that at the end of his life. But I disagree that God brought these young girls to meet their Maker... God may not intervene, but to assume that you understand any reason why is very, very presumptive. Just as those creationists who refuse to believe that God might utilize the process of evolution to create the world. They are not mutually exclusive... To presume anything with regards to something you know almost nothing about is a slippery slope to be on... God Bless those babies.

Someone mentions God and the atheists crusaders come out in full force to say how wrong they are. Try being more secure in your beliefs, and stop bashing people for theirs. You fundie atheists get more annoying everyday.

Oh great Mike Lee you brought out the atheist numb nuts who have no tolerance for anybody's opinion but their own. Frankly I get sick of the "Well if God really cared"... maybe it doesn't isn't it quite possible that it doesn't have to be a Biblical "God". You people make this into a either or proposition either you believe in the Judeo Christian God or nothing at all. Screw you guys. You can't explain to me how everything got here, no one has. I am no Christian I'd say on my bad days I am a agnostic on my good days a agnostic leaning towards Deism but when people express their beliefs, come on A holes sometimes that is their only comfort. Quit crying and yelling just because you disagree with their world view. It helps some people to cope with tragedy and loss, if you can't get that and want to be a bunch of tight a holes be my guest, this attitude is what keeps people away from atheism and agnosticism. Now I know you guys will have blood shooting out of your eyes but have at it. Me I got more important things to do than waste time reading conniption fits. Continue on without me.

MrBurns I do tend to agree, but sadly we have a lot of people claiming to be Christians, who come on to websites like this and say some of the most incoherent crap ever. Some trying to defend Christianity, others trying to provide some insight, yet most of them so completely wrong it's laughable. We, as Christians haven't exactly provided an even remotely decent example of what a Christian should be like, so I can't really blame them, as much as it doesn't help their cause either to be complete jerks.

I agree CJcarlson412. And I dont care whether or not someone believes in God. Thats all up to them. What annoys the hell out of me is every time someone says they'll pray, or thanks God, atheists have to show up and say how wrong and dumb they are. It annoys me like Christians do when they continuously attack gay people. Insecure people on both sides.

This makes me so angry. I could personnally put a bullet in the head of whos responsible for this and not feel more than if I had stepped on a cockroach. Actually, I would feel more remorse for the cockroach.

This is why my children never left my sight, EVER! I cannot imagine how I would go on after something like this. The only thing that would get me out of bed in the morning would be to find the killer.

Gregibay - and putting a bullet in the head of monsters that do stuff like this is EXACTLY what happened in the 50's when I grew up and people got the perp before the police. Times have changed - yea, right! Now we live in an era where the perps are coddled, prisoners given free workout rooms and law degress while incarcerated, and everyone from social workers to the ACLU yelling that killers, rapists, and degenerates are misunderstood and what they do is NOT their fault. Want a suggestion - go back to the 50's and friggin kill these punks and perverts as soon as we find them. If this happened to one of MY kids, I wouldn't rest until the killer was underground. A bullet to the head is too good for these type of people - a slow, methodical death on prime-time TV would be better, and it definitely would send a message; a message that is lost on the new-millenia morons that don't believe in capital punishment or want to leave it up to God to pass judgement. Enough said.

God Bless you all In Iowa as well as the families of these beautiful children. We all know they are in the glory of the Lord. I traveled through there in August taking my father back to his homelands (Keshena) in Wisconsin and we stopped near Des Moines and prayed for their safe return. I tried to keep up with the news on them because if it were my child/ren I would be heartbroken as well. What a sad day... May the Lord comfort you and give you strength and guidance.

First and foremost let's all pray for these innocent children and their family and friends. I agree with Creek Dog. I know this sounds bad, however if it were my child, anything and I mean anything that could find them asap i would gladly welcome. Hindsight is 20/20 and I would want to look back and think I did absolutely everything I could to aid in their return. I pray to God they did not suffer and I also pray for the return of all the lost children.

I can't stand it when people write, "I never let my child out of my sight" on a story about a kidnapping. You never sleep? You never take a shower? Your child joins you in the bathroom? Your child will never be old enough to go on a bike ride alone? I guess your child will never go off to college, because a predator can get a college-kid easily if he wants to, too. That's why he's called a predator! You are in denial. This could happen to anyone's child. It didn't happen because the girls were out of their parents' sight. It happened because there is a predator out there.

It is very sad time we live in nowadays when you can not even let your kids (or Grand Kids) go out for a bike ride in the neighborhood. I hope they catch the person or persons (I use the term "person" very loosely here) soon. To know that they are still out there possibly targeting another child is not good. Sorry for the Families loss and my condolences. RIP, Girls....... :-(

Deer hunters, walking through the woods while making their drives, found the girls!

Reward money had NOTHING to do with finding the girls.

70,000 plus hunters fill the Iowa woods during the first deer season and hunters were asked to keep an eye out for the girls or anything unusual. Hunters walk through a lot of rough country when trying to push out deer.

All those hunters in the woods and fields gave extra eyes for the possibility of finding them or clues.

After they were missing for weeks, I didn't think the chances were good of finding them alive. A kidnapper has to feed them and nothing was received such as a ransom note. Too much time had passed.

I'm a deer hunter and I was out this past weekend and our group walked a lot of ground, just as other hunters. I thought something might be found with our deer season and the hunters in the woods.

My thoughts are with the families. December Holidays won't be happy for a long time.

I'm glad the reward money had nothing to do with it. This means the hunters will be donating the money toward an organization that works to find missing children, right?

I'm in favor of implanting micro-chips behind the ear of every child born or at least
somewhere on their body as suggested by GM Scooter. A locating device that can
be removed when the child reaches age 18. It is time to make it a lot harder
for preps to kid nap children. The choice would be up to the parents.

Unfortunately, I would agree with you, but can't. A microchip behind the ear could be removed, but would also damage the victim. A rapist/murderer would probably do that first, which would be horrific enough, then commit the crime. I would think there would be ways to block or mix up a microchip by using some kind of transmitter. Again, where there's a will, there would be a way to circumvent a microchip. Just think of the old adage: if all guns are outlawed, only outlaws would have guns.

With these types of criminals, they will stop at nothing to achieve their amoral, selfish "goal".

It's a terrible world we live in when kids can't even ride their bikes or go exploring for fun. Childhood should be a time for absolute total freedom. Instead, you have to watch them constantly. We lived in the country while my son was little, so he could grow up without fear and had lots of room to play, like I did, but no place is truly safe. The two boys, Ben Ownby and Shawn Hornbeck from Missouri, were abducted easily and they lived in the country - few witnesses, not much traffic, isolated areas, contributed to this tragedy.

At least these girls were found, so there is some closure. Just so sorry it ended the way it did. I can't imagine going through such a thing. Condolences to the families.

Well, you wouldn't put the chip in the same place on every child. If you did, the first thing the perp would do is cut out a chunk of meat from that area.

hs321... if it's trackable it can be found no matter where it's placed on the body.

Stop giving up your freedoms... in second thought, I don't care what you do with YOUR freedoms. Just leave me and mine out of it.

The microchip is a terrible idea, and here is why:

1.) There is no techology that allows a microchip to be tracked via GPS. They can only be read with a scanner similar to the one at your local grocery store, and only from about 1 foot away. They are completely useless for what people are suggesting. I personally would not waste money on implanting these on either criminals or children. Currently, the smallest GPS tracking device is about the 1/2 the size of a deck of cards and requires battery changeouts.
2.) Random location on the body will still not "hide" it from the prep. With an implantation, there will still be a scar from the implant, and you can also feel it. It is very easy for me to locate microchips on canines that I have never met. A human would be 10 times easier because there is no hair to hide the scar.
3.) Contrary to popular belief, you cannot just randomly implant a chip in any area. There must be enough subcutaneous skin to lift up to inject the chip in. Insertion into the muscle tissue can cause irriation and medical issues. People can have allergic reactions to the microchip.
4.) You must also take into consideration things such as failure of the mircochip. Do you force the child to go through another procedure to remove the first chip and replace it with a second? Who pays for the procedure? Will insurance cover it?
5.) Microchips can potentially set off metal detectors.

Paintlvr32. You bring up some very valid points. HOWEVER, our technology continues to improve. Not that I want to see this tragedy as any opportunity, but it might prod us on to find a way to resolve/prevent such terrible things that have occurred.

As for size, implantation, etc., our cell phones can be tracked about anywhere. We already have a very large network of cell towers (far from complete, but growing). I know the chip in my cell phone is about half an inch square. Not that I'm a science fiction guru, but in the "Matrix" movie, humans were used as power generators, and it's true that we generate enough power to fuel a tiny chip. (Like I said, the technology is in the works.)

Scars? I've got so many scars on me (many from childhood) that I look like I was probably abused. As for feeling the chip under the skin, I'm not sure; but again, technology might find something less stiff to be less obvious. This also might solve the metal detector problem.

Again, this is just brainstorming. I can't imagine the grief the family feels for the loss of their loved one. It must be terrible. However, if just one person or child could be saved by an advance in tracking technology, it would be worth it. Nothing would thrill me more than to help save someone from the terrible fates of so many. We have far too many predators. We have far too many "disappeared." We need to work on protection, location and prevention. The current system isn't working very well.

Many, many condolences to the families. Please accept my sympathies on your loss.

In the past a child could scream or put up a fight but using a stun gun they can be immobilized and abducted in seconds. They are no longer safe even in pairs. Also there is no shortage of instruction on TV and internet showing the predators how to do this. We live in scary times.

I cannot help but think that all these graphic awful detective shows, violent vampire shows, etc., on TV and movies are assisting to put ideas in these psycho's heads. Killing, killing, killing, torture, torture, torture.

America has become a country who seems to love violence as entertainment. Sadly, psychos want to live it!

Oh give me a freaking break AllPeopleRights. Violent games and violent movies do not make violent children. It is the lack of parents teaching thier children right from wrong. My kid LOVES all of that stuff. Hell he could probably tell you more about Rambo and The Walking Dead than anybody but yet he is not violent at all. That is because I watch it with him and teach him that they are shows and it is not acceptable to actually do that kind of stuff.

I hope you are wrong but the parents of these girls are presently not speaking because the one set of parents were not working with the Police, supposedly because of past drug arrests and jail time....now understand that their child and a neice are missing and they are worried they may be accused because of their past,At least I assume that's the reason they wouldn't turn their lives upside down to find their babies...I would be doing anything ANYTHING to help bring back my baby and my neice,so I really hope it's just their paranoia that kept them from doing the right thing and not to cover something up And I hope that they didnt die because of it,but I remember Jon Benet, how her parents stopped helping the Police too,and we still have no body in jail for that baby girls death...Prayers to all the family, community, and those poor hunters stumbling on such a tragity,I'd never sleep right again,as a Parent I'd never sleep again period, dear God what they must be going through,I hope they both died quick and never saw it comming,I know that's more than likely not true but I hope that's what they find.

I would bet that statistically there are no more of these psychos today than there were in the 50's when I grew up or even 100 years ago. WHat we have is mass communication so we all hear about these things (or at least hear about it when the vistims are middle class kids), we also have all the shows that depict police procedure, etc which again makes it seem like this is a burgeoning psycosis. There have been perverts and molesters for ever, but because news didn't travel far it wasn't as widely known.

Whether there are more sickos or not (and I use the word sicko not as an excuse for these folks) we as a society do need to find a way to protect ourselves from them, personally (and I am a member of the ACLU) I believe that for a child molester the sentancing option should be one of two choices - the death penalty or life without parole. The problem with the death penalty is that right now it is applied randomly at the oprion of the prosecution to go for that - prosecutors spend an inordicnate amount of time using the death penalty as a plea bargain chip, stop that crap - make it automatic that for specific crimes the death penalty is ALWAYS on the table and that the only other oprion a jury would have is life no parole. (and as if you wanted to know - the crimes that this would apply to is child rape, senior citizen rape, murder of anyone in the course of a sexual assault, murder as part of a hate crime, multiple/mass murder.) Anyone found to be a psycopath could never get out of PRISON (no hospital and no need to treat the pscopathy).

But I've tried to stress so many times this is not the 50s anymore, years have changed our culture for the worst and parents and grandparents CANNOT let their little ones out of sight. These girls were ONLY 8 and 10 yrs. old; still babies. DO NOT LET YOUR LITTLE ONES OUT OF YOUR SIGHT!!! Does anyone hear????

I have never let anyone but Family watch my kids and probley too strict, but I've sat down with my children and watched shows and spoke to them how children are killed, sold into the sex trade, molested ect,be open and honest (age appropriate )with your children, let them know you will always believe them if they say someone has hurt or touched them, and if someone threatens them or Mommy and Daddy You will protect them and people that say that are lying to buy their silence, tell them to scream FIRE if someone grabs them kick fight all they can before they are put in a car ect,and if they are to be takin, know We will never stop looking for them, and every second they are gone Mommy and Daddy are thinking of them at that very moment and doing their best to find them, and do what ever it takes to make that person want to keep them alive till we can find them, give them the hope they would to survive an extended abduction, goto the FBI web sites they tell you how to hopefully avoid/survive abductions rapes ect,I love the chip idea but would never put one in my kid for all the reasons stated here in other posts,I do think we should put them in the predator, somewhere like his penis,a bone so it would harder to get out,or maybe a chip that is heat sensitive,if it gets below body temp or keeps abnormally fluctuating, the Police or FBI whoever would grab them up and cut off their balls.I don't care about their rights, they should have NONE,bread butter, lemons to keep away scurvy and water a toilet and a toothbrush.
We as a Nation need to stop feeling sorry for these monsters!!!Im sorry if they were not protected by their family's and were hurt at some point as children But They have made the decision to do to others what hurt them,And they will be put to death or Castrated!! Why do we care so much for these Animals more than their victims? Why? This is why it continues,if you know your Balls are coming off the first time you violate children they may decide against it,and if not,It will only happen once,Period,we have DNA now and it's highly improbable to convict a innocent person.Lets cut off their balls/kill these bastards before they take your/mine Baby's !!!

Afterall, we microchip our pets, why not our precious children? Maybe a chip that falls out later in life or can be easily removed later in life? I'm just so sick of hearing about abductions and murders of our children. I, too, would have no problem "expediting" the punishment of this sicko, or sickos! May the little ones rest in peace and my sincere condolences to their families.

And removing it only at the request of the person who was implanted with the chip.

A few years back a young man from KC went missing on a trip to, I think, Chicago. He was 18 years old at the time. It was also reported he was not the type to just disappear on his own. He was never found and his poor family was devastated.

Easy there Seewhat I mean188, skippersmom never mentioned anything about "heaven needing more angels."

Creek Dog and skippersmom, children do not need to be microchipped, what they need is parents that do not let them run around by themselves. At 8 and 10 they should be with an adult not riding their bikes all over town by themselves. I blame the parents just as much as the creep that took them, probably raped them, and then turned around and killed them. My child does not even go out in our front yard by himself. Call me a helicopter parent all you want but at least my child is safe and alive.

I don't agree with implanting kids but a chip could be placed in an item of clothing or a piece of jewelry.

As for Stacie the helicopter mom, I am pretty sure that if something happened to your child you would feel enough guilt that you wouldn't need to hear from judgmental strangers. At some point you have to let kids grow up a little. If you are in public and he needs to use the restroom does he follow you to the ladies room? At what age will he be allowed to go in the men's room alone? You can't watch them every second of the day and it only takes a second for something to happen.

I have two children ages 6 and 9. I also don't let them out of my sight for fear of all the "psychos" in the world, but the parents of these children have suffered enough. They don't deserve blame for what has happened to their children. No one should hurt a child and no one deserves to have their children taken from them in such an unthinkable way. The blame rests solely on the perpetrator or perpetrators for committing such a terrible act. Remember, these children were out riding their bikes and having fun like children are suppose to. Someone came along and stole their childhood and their lives. I hope the families can have some comfort in at least knowing the fate of their children even though its not the outcome they had prayed for.

Stacie1, While I understand your concern, I must vehemently disagree. At 8-10 years old I was able to "ride my bike all over town" with my friends. Granted it was a different time, but I see no reason why our children shouldn't feel safe enough to do this.

This isn't a supervision problem. Kids need to learn how to be independent and should be able to go out into our communities without the fear of being abducted, tortured, raped and murdered.

The problem is perverts being allowed back into the community. Death is too good for them, but preferable to having them loose in our society.

Micro chips is a good start when a child is first abducted. With all the technology we have I am sure the signal could be found in a remote area. When becoming an adult if they want they coud remove it. We micro chip are dogs so know one will steal it or in case someone inds it o if your do is orth all that isn't your child??? Just sayin

                                              #18.8 - Fri Dec 7, 2012 4:04 PM EST

Microchips are NOT a good idea for reasons noted above. You would only guarantee that perps would cut into the child to remove the chip and reduce the likelihood of the child surviving.

It seems possible that there is more than one perpetrator involved in the abduction, transport and deaths of these girls.

Deepest sympathy for the family, friends and community.

Why didn't GOD stop this "abduction" before it even happened? I'm sure there was plenty of time to intervene. He couldve created a sink hole to swallow up the vehicle of the sick animal before he reached these young girls. Keep praying and wasting your time for GOD to be in your life. Please

The same reason God doesn't strike you down for hating him or thinking he is a fairy tale,or strike any of us,And Allows the immoral too continue living,He has allowed Satin, demons and their followers to roam the Earth until The End of time,He is a Just and fair God and does what he says,And he wants us all to see the horrible Evil that's in this world from Satin, and to chose to go with him to his Kingdom, but we have to reject the Evil and Except Jesus, death is not final with God,Satin and his Crüe will be burning for eternity,we have so many perverts in the world because we have all excepted evil and sexualize everything including children, sex sells, as normal and so it's in movies, music,TV,Magazines,Taiwan is a great example of Perversion insomuch as its the goto place for many perverts who want sex with kids,And that's just one place, and they come here to grab kids too for the sex trade,Sex is not a bad thing it's Awesome when not perverted everywhere you look. When you can't get through a movie without inappropriate sexual innuendo,or a sex scene,Breasts or Butts geez,Im embarrassed to watch with my kids(actually they get embarrassed I get pizzed,Im no prude but I don't have to see these things 98.9% of the time to get the show or for it to be funny.
God will vindicate these girls as well as all that have died unjustly, and I do believe those girls are with Jesus and have no pain or sorrow.

Maybe they got off their bikes, went into the woods and just got lost. May not be foul play.

The town of Evansdale is a bedroom community of Waterloo Iowa. Its houses and very suburban. The area around the lake where they were is not densly wooded but where the girls bikes and purse was found is. It was the perfect place to grab them. there is a security fence on the south and north of the trail with dense vegitation and a opening that showed that people had driven up there before ( the grass showed it)

I don't know the terrain or details, so just suggesting a possibility. If they got lost, then going 25 miles over the course of several days before succumbing to the elements and hunger doesn't seem out of the question. If they were victims of violence, the autopsies should show it, I expect.

Why didn't GOD allow them to remain with their families in the first place? What could they have done to deserve this horrible ending to their lives? Wake up people, you need to protect your loved ones, not prayer. That is a waste of time. Prayers don't bring people back from the dead.

Again with the god thing. This is an impotent god who can't protect innocent children from monsters. I love how, when god doesn't prevent murders it's "well, god works in mysterious ways, there's a meaning to this." But then you hear "god gave these people back their children for Xmas." If this is the case, then your god is a sadistic bastard.

Yep, since he chose not to answer all those prayers for the safe return of the girls. Will people ever realize that religion, including Christianity, is just a bunch of superstitions and myths? How many times does this have to happen before people throw away the false crutches of religion and start living in reality??? Prayers DO NOT get answered! Whatever God there may be does not interfere with us. He didn't kill these girls, but he didn't prevent it either. There is no reason to hate him, nor is there any reason to praise him. He had nothing to do with this - he never does.

I see the angry atheists are out in force today. I have nothing against a person who refuses to believe in God. You've made your choice based on YOUR version of our God. We see Him so differently than you do. You can't comprehend our faith because you have closed that door forever and it means you must be right, at least in your own minds. What is not acceptable, however, is the way you all feel it is necessary and of the utmost importance to attack the faith of and to denigrate others who have chosen to believe in Him. Michael1601 does seem to believe there is some kind of "god" but he's just a disinterested entity of some kind. That doesn't even fit the most ignorant definition of a god. Even the ancient Greeks gave powers to their gods. It takes so much more courage and intelligence to believe in a living God than it does to dismiss every miracle and every unexplained scientific dead end that the only way to God is through courage and conviction combined with intelligence and a great deal of openness. Sadly, too many of you are only open to the negative and I'm sorry for that. But you can't take away the faith of millions by petulance and anger. In fact there is not a thing YOU can do about it. So why not let the people who have lost their children hold onto that faith you despise so much? What is so wrong with it that you feel you must rail against it?

prayer gives hope and if there is a god he placed them into his heart! Can you do the least? Its only humane to do so and grieve with their families! Like how sick are you to blame God for these wrong doings or to accuse them of wasting their time? God can only do so much with how many souls that are born daily? And if the girls prayed during their death they put themselves to rest with peace, and he most likely took them before the pain was afflicted! Have you been there in that state of situation? I can say I have at a couple points in my life he has sent an angel and saved my life! For example, a freak accident, I fell off a 97 ft waterfall straight down to my death, within a cpl sec.s a friend reached out and pulled me to safety, he hadn't known I was in trouble, he didn't know what to do in any normal situation let alone, he hadn't had the strength on his own to do so to pull me out of heavy rushing water, and he hadn't recalled it as natural reflexes the water was to hard and heavy I was soaked and slippery, if he hadn't been there god couldn't have helped but to take me in when it was done with. I am alive because I am a believer, try getting t-boned at 60 miles per hour and making it out alive, had you been through close calls you might be a believer, but you might as well close your windows and lock your doors. You dont give a damn about anyone else but yourself! Donate to your local shelter and clean your act up for the holidays, you people need to realize what is important!
