Updated at 5:50 p.m. ET: A 7-year-old boy was fatally shot by his father outside a gun shop in western Pennsylvania, according to a Pennsylvania State Police report.
Joseph Loughrey, the father, had gone in to Twig’s Reloading Den in East Lackawannock Township some time before 11 a.m. to try to sell a 9 mm Taurus handgun and a scope rifle, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Store managers weren't interested.
Loughrey, 44, and his son, Craig Loughrey, returned to the truck, where Loughrey secured his son in a booster seat on the passenger side. He then placed the long gun in the bed of the truck.
As he got into the truck, he reached to place the handgun into a glove box storage unit, police told the Tribune-Review. That's when it fired.
Authorities were called at 10:53 a.m. local time and found the boy lying next to the truck after a failed attempt at resuscitation. They stayed on scene until after 1 p.m., dispatchers said.
"All evidence at this point would suggest that this incident is accidental," the Pennsylvania State Police report stated.
According to the Tribune-Review, Loughrey didn't realize that a round remained in the gun's chamber.
“This happens all too often where people think the gun was empty,” State Police Lt. Eric Hermick.
Twig’s Reloading Den is an outdoor supply store about 70 miles from Pittsburgh.
Imy Howard, owner of Howard & Son Meat Packing store next door, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that her son heard a shot this morning. She said that Twig’s Reloading Den hosted target shooting in the back parking lot last week but not this week.
A Twig’s employee told the Post-Gazette that the incident was “just an unfortunate accident.”

Darwin wins again.
This kind of stuff happens all the time-- boys shooting their brother dead with dad's gun. And what about the 8 yo boy who shot himself in the face dead at a gun show a few years back when his dad wanted to give a demo about how even automatic rifles can be used safely by a boy. The far-right wingers tell us that these are just made-up stories, and when someone shows them real data, as was done on a recent news program, we get rudely interrupted, accused of being un-American and told that we're trying to take away the 2nd Amendment.
At least let's have a polite and intelligent conversation that doesn't question people's patriotism.
And let's not forget the 3 year old that shot his father in the face and killed him with the loaded gun he left lying around.
Just plain STUPIDITY...
Someone should be charged with a crime of murder, child endangerment, child abuse, and anything else the state has on the books...
He has a right to carry a gun...no problem, he has a righ to utilize common sense and the right to protect a child...he chose not to exercise his right to use common sense...
Therefore, this man should do 30 years in prison for his actions...just like when a drunk driver gets charged for killing someone accidently...
If this would have been a Black man, the state would have been all over this charing the man with all kinds of crime...the same should happen here...
All you people can say is " rule number one, empty the gun, rule number two, never point it, etc."...get your hillbill perverted catholic behind out of here...
Hello - where does it say the fathers gun caused this!!! It says he went there to SELL his 9mm gun. It says he was backing out of a parking spot when the kid was shot, really odd time to have a gun in you hand, if he didn't sell it.. Lots of missing FACTS here.
It sounds like the boy was in a car booster seat in the front passenger seat. That is illegal in Pa. All child seats are required to be in the back seat. If the father had followed the law his son would still be alive. Of course if he had not had any guns his son would also still be alive. Statistics show that many people especially children are killed with their own guns or their parents guns.
If the truck does not have a back seat I suspect the front seat is legal with the car seat facing the seatback. Article @ this time doesn't say who or where the shot came from. You are assuming the parents gun, father was said to be backing out. If so why would there be a gun in his hand?? Children killed by their parents guns are to result of irresponsible parents for not keeping the gun away from the child and at an appropriate age teaching them either to never touch a gun or better yet how to safely handle a gun. These same parents probably don't monitor their children in the bath tub, pool, etc.
Guns just don't jump up, aim themselves and go off. They require a stupid human to normally put their booger hook on the trigger when they have no intention of killing or destroying what the gun is pointed at!!!
Geezus...couldn't they get some facts straight before publishing this? Who's gun? The dad's in the cab, or was the shot from outside by accident? They mention target shooting to imply that people have shot guns around the shop location, but not that day, but they don't clarify if a gun went off in the cab. Terrible situation in any case. Poor child and parents.
make that poor child, very very dumb parent
Here ya go Mike- I agree on another lousy copy/paste from MSN
http://www.heraldstandard.com/united_states_ap/officials-boy-shot-to-death-at-pa-gun-store/article_5120a110-86e2-506e-b1ff-fcc2e6b98238.html
They already updated it...the dad shot him. Good Lord....
Another NRA nut accidentally kills his kid. Somehow I am not surprised. In my home state of Massachusetts, a father takes his kid to a range and gives him a automatic weapon. The kid pulls the trigger and can't handle the "kickback" and shot and kills himself. Stupid is, as stupid does. One less NRA member.
Well troll why not tell us all how you know this guy was a NRA member. I have several handguns and assault rifles, but do not belong to NRA. You prove you just cant fix stupid.
And once again, the statistics showing that a gun in the home (or in this case, in Dad's truck) is several times more likely to kill or injure a family member than an intruder are supported.
NBC - HIRE AN EDITOR!
A .9mm gun. Really? That's about 1/5 the diameter of a BB.
A 9mm shell is approximately .36" in diameter.
Tom
Yes it is. When I commented the article had the gun at .9 mm.
Thanks, NBC.
Yeah NRA...more blood on your hands.
Very sad, Lots of missing facts here like where did the shot come from??? Was this even fired from a hand gun and not a riffle?? Report says boy was in his car seat, father was backing out, one would assume this means the kid was inside the truck, did the shot enter through the window or the door? If it went through the door most common handgun rounds would have been severely slowed / or had the flight path altered by the doors metal. Very sad but lots of missing information, like is the back parking lot some kind of range or is it just accepted to pop a few off out there??? The later certainly isn't safe....
Gun restriction laws are not the answer to preventing accidental shootings. Education and training in proper use and handling of the firearm is, That unfortunately is the responsibility of the owner and no one else!!! Unfortunately most states CCW classes are a joke, nothing more than a money grab. From what I can tell anyone with cash can become an NRA instructor :( Have a guy close to me who claims to be an NRA instructor and teaches CCW classes, he doesn't even know how to properly hold a handgun, and shows up at the local range with this 50cal desert eagle and ends up pointing it at others over and over again when he changes, inserts or removes a magazine. He's been told over and over and still says sorry, don't worry the safety is on or I know what I am doing! Unfortunately this world is full of reckless people, they drive reckless, handle knives, guns, etc in a reckless manor. I would be supportive of requirements that force real training, like a 2 day class with a min of 500 rounds, along an accuracy test. Lots of variables, probably impossible to require legally but gun shops should do a abetter job of offering and selling education to gun owners. Most just are wanting to make the gun sale......
Its should be illegal to walk around with a loaded gun, unless licensed for it. Like a police officer or Guard. Public safety. Accidental discharges can kill anyone in the vicinity.
You would be shocked how many cops really don't really know how to use their guns much less are accurate with them! Most don't train / practice because they are 1 -LAZY, and 2 - there departments won't pay them to nor provide ammo!!!
... and the twig's employee said the shooting (and death) was "just an unfortunate accident" ?? an unfortunate accident is if i break an expensive item in a store, not shooting and killing a kid ... but i guess that's how some gun people think
What a tragic story. If one were to believe the outrageous pro-gun activists that guns don't kiill people I guess the ENTIRE fault of this tragedy falls entirely on the father, which means that even if the gun weren't present the child would have died anyway. Somewhere this logic escapes me.
Another genius redneck thinkin' he knows all about guns
For those who think the story is short of facts:
The boy was shot while dad was getting into the truck with the gun in his hand, not backing up as the article suggest. Dad claims he did not know there was a bullet in the chamber. So dad should be charged. Why didn't dad transport the gun with chamber open or better yet TRIPLE check it. With a CCW permit that's what we were taught to do and even before I got the permit it's what we have always done.
I posted the link in comments above.
Have only got the above lack of facts story from NBC to go from, not seeing a link to any further facts. If what you say is fact dad was un educated and reckless. Gun should have been in a cas or holstered if he CCW, Can't figure if he went to sell the gun how a round was in the chamber he didn't know about. Never seen a clerk in a gun store take a gun from a customer (for any reason) and not check that it was not loaded. There is no way they would make an offer on a gun without handling it and looking it over. So someone had to re-load the gun??
Bottom line, someone had their booger hook on the trigger, instead of outside the trigger guard when the gun was pointed at something they did not intend to kill or destroy!!
Still say facts are missing.......
well like ronnie van zandt says"handguns are made for killing..they aint good for nothing else"
from my colonel father to my nra chapter president mother to all my friends who ride flying colors...not a one of them EVER bragged about or showed their guns...its ridiculous how the baggers need to have their "precious ' with them like a binky
This was NOT an accident, as the article suggests. This WAS the father's fault, and he should be charged.
I'm guessing this won't make it into the "Armed Citizen" column in NRA's magazine. It's too bad they don't have an "Irresponsible Citizen" column that reported on all the unfortunate gun-related incidents occurring daily. They'd have no shortage of material.
So, just to sum up: if you’re rich enough to hire a bodyguard and not personally own a gun, that’s fine. But if you think that silly Second Amendment gave you a right to protect yourself, you’re completely off-base. I’m so glad we have celebrities explaining our rights to us. What would we do without these airheads?
http://alarmingnews.com/2006/10/04/rosie-odonnell-is-a-big-fat-hypocrite/
Ironic and tragic, he secured him in a child safety seat to keep him safe, yet the boy ended up dying from a gunshot.
I did not have guns in my home and never allowed my daughter in homes with them. That was question number one that I asked the parents before she could visit a friend. Yes, she was allowed to cross the street. She could make the appropriate decisions about when to cross and when to get out of the way. As a parent, I would rather not find my child shot by MY gun because someone else gained access to it. And as for rapists being safe, I would rather have a fist or knife fight than have them shoot me with MY gun. That is what happens when you have a gun. So put a big sign in front of your house saying I will arm you before you attack me.
Had the kid been packing iron this would have never happened. Or perhaps Dad was just standing his ground. Go to hell you NRA uneducated red-neck morons.
Trolls are out in force
Trapper, lol
NRA has nothing to do with this. They are a windbag lobbying body that really is about making money. They hype stuff just like our elected officials to suit their agenda..
Dad owned a gun, dad did not get the proper education or training to handle it properly otherwise he would not have had his booger hook on the trigger to make the gun go off, when it was not pointed at something that he was not intending to kill or destroy. It should have also been in a case, gun rug or holster. The console of a vehicle is not a SAFE place to keep a gun with the trigger exposed. Too many other things get thrown in a console that can work there way into the trigger.
Just another stupid human being, there seem to be a lot of them lately. Another reason to get rid of guns... all of them!
can we be rid of trolls like you?
You know what also works to protect your family? A large protective, well trained dog such as a German Shepherd. Most criminals shy away from homes with large dogs. Guns aren't always the answer, but no doubt they can make a difference too. But unfortunately way too many unfit people own a real gun,and they would be dangerous with a cap gun! And yes I have a large dog,a well trained Doberman, criminals stay away from my house you can bet.
Tony , that might work in the city but in a rural area , anyone that would be bold enough to kill you would not hesitate to kill your dog.
Don't get me wrong . I like dogs and i feel they make good alarms ,
If somebody really wants to get into your home, he would have poisoned your dog before that. Problem solved.
What a meat head! Too bad he didn't kill himself instead. Another stupid ass empty gun story. I'll bet if everyone had to cock the gun and shoot it at their own head you wouldn't hear anymore "empty gun stories" would you. Kind of self policing.
The NRA needs to concentrate on gun safety and responsible people owning reasonable weapons. Stop appealing to irresponsible gun nuts who want high powered weapons they don't need! And stop the pushing the gun agenda which the NRA is aligned at the hip with gun manufactures to increase sales, with way too many weapons going to irresponsible owners.

On this we agree Tony above is my favorite . I have always been a fan of shotguns myself . I like revolvers because there easier store and carry.
NRA is only worried about selling memberships, preferably lifetime ones and whatever they can brand with NRA!!! You got some green you can be an NRA Instructor, no problem........
