Man and woman found bound and gagged on San Francisco street

A man is dead after he and a woman were found bound and gagged in the middle of a street in San Francisco's Bayview District Sunday night.

A motorist driving on Brussels Street saw the two people lying on the road and called the police around 8:30 p.m., San Francisco officer Albie Esparza told NBC News.

Both were found bound and gagged. The man, believed to be in his early 20s, was unconscious. The woman, also believed to be in her early 20s, was "out of it," Esparza said. The pair were taken to the hospital, where the man died and the woman remains in critical condition.

Police are awaiting a medical examiner's report to determine what caused the trauma on the male victim. Esparza said it could have been a gunshot wound or trauma caused by blunt force.

"No one saw or heard anything," Esparza said, adding that investigators are still trying to determine if the two victims had been attacked elsewhere and dumped on Brussels Street. Police are hoping the female victim will be able to speak with them soon.

Esparza said the neighborhood the two were found in is "pretty quiet."

"It's just your typical working-class neighborhood," he said, adding that investigators are canvassing the area to see if any of the homes had video surveillance and are asking the community to come forward with information.

Had the couple been found on Geary St. nobody would have thought anything about it and some of the bar patrons may have even joined in.

I'm right there with the two of you. I love San Francisco, it's the only town I've been in where you don't need a TV, you can just watch the street life and it's just as entertaining.

Wow, people freak out that within the entire 3,794,000 sq miles of this country that we call America, there is actually one city where people can go to have fun. That's good ol' God-fearing, theocratic, boring, backwards, anti-intellectual, science-hating, ignorant America for you.

Uh...what's fun about being gagged and bound and left in the streets? (Yes I know that's not what you were referring to, but if you think running around drunken, naked, and without ethics or morals is fun...then please, start your own country and take all your friends with you.)

I am God-fearing...and I am not theocratic, boring, backward, anti-intellectual, science hating, or ignorant. Frankly I grow weary of having to watch EVERYTHING I say...while a dozen other groups quash my rights in the name of not stepping on theirs.

Are police not trained to tell the difference between a gunshot and blunt forces. So is there a hole or not?

Because there is no crime in any other state? Do share with us this "crime free" location.

I was born and raised in California- left in my 20's. It was a wonderful place to grow up with beach and mountains and desert as well. I have family in the Bay Area and always enjoy my visits.

People always jump on the "crappy place to live" bandwagon- the truth is people pay outrageous amounts of money to live in the San Fran area.

I was born in Santa Monica. I got to Texas as fast as I could. (Ok, ok, my dad got transferred here). I still love to visit Cali (Yosemite - most beautiful place on earth) but I'd never want to live there again. And not because of this. It's too expensive, to looney liberal, and I'd have to sell all my machine guns.

I'd have to sell all my machine guns.

Well, that explains why it seems from where I sit, that you're still in Texas.

My condolences to the dead man's family; and best wishes for the woman's physical and emotional recoveries, as much as they are possible. I hope that the perpetrators are found, and brought to justice.

Ironic Dave- I too was born in Santa Monica (ST John's hospital) and even moved to Texas in 06- left in 2010.

Most of my family is in Palm Desert and you are correct about the cost of living there- crazy high. But to defend it- the home I purchased in Texas-which we now rent out because we are so upside down on it that we need to hold on to it for a couple more years- is a thorn in my side. We lovingly call it the "Texas money pit".

I met some very narrow minded conservatives (good ol Boys) in Texas- and Texans can be just as odd- the difference after living in both places- In and Out Burger kicks the crap out of What a Burger ; )

Wow, they're committing crimes using their type of foreplay now. Hopefully the woman recovers and can give a description of the assailant/s. And for crying out loud, the cops can't tell whether a wound is caused by a gunshot or blunt force trauma...sheesh. And with looming budget cuts due to an impending bankruptcy for the state and city of SF, this is going to get worse. The people in SF need to stop packing meat and start packing heat.

Police aren't forensic experts nor are they coroners. A severe beating can cover the evidence of a gunshot. A beating with a pointed object could cause injuries similar to gunshots. If they were dumped from a moving vehicle the cause of death could be covered by the resulting damage.
