A disputed "drum major" inscription on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington will be removed, government officials say.
A controversial "drum major" inscription will be removed from the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington but won’t be replaced with King’s full quotation as some had hoped, the Interior Department announced Tuesday.
Workers will scratch off the wording on the east side of the memorial and match the west side with new striations in order to make the look consistent.
The makeover will cost between $700,000 and $900,000.
The plan to remove, instead of replace, the quote was recommended by the original sculptor, Lei Yixin, as the safest way to ensure the structural integrity of the memorial was not compromised, the Interior Department said. The King family, the group that built the memorial and the National Park Service also were consulted about the change, the department added.
"The memorial stands as a testament to Dr. King's struggle for civil rights, and a dream of dignity, respect and justice for all," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in a statement. "I am proud that all parties have come together on a resolution that will help ensure the structural integrity of this timeless and powerful monument to Dr. King's life and legacy."
"We are grateful that Secretary Salazar's office and the National Park Service has taken such care to maintain the spirit and appearance of such an important monument to our country's history and my father's memory," Bernice A. King, King's youngest daughter and CEO of the King Center in Atlanta, was quoted as saying by the Interior Department.

Critics, including poet Maya Angelou, complained after the memorial opened in 2011 that the paraphrased quotation took King's words out of context, making him sound arrogant. The paraphrase reads: "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness."
The full quotation was taken from a 1968 sermon about two months before King was assassinated. It reads: "Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter."
The alteration plan will be submitted to the Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission in January for their review.
Work is scheduled to begin in February or March and be completed in the spring, according to federal officials. Lei, the original sculptor, will perform the stone work to remove the inscription, and the memorial will remain open to visitors.

If the paraphrase reads:

why not just ADD words to the beginning of the paraphrase:
"Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that"
This wouldn't be hard to do at all.
A waste of money.
The entire monument is a waste of money. They should have built a monument to George Washington Carver instead. That dude was a real hero.
Whatever the cost, it would be worth it to put his full statement on that monument. It is what America so desperately needs. May we all share in his groaning prayer for the light of truth to shine like this in this nation. God help us to love one another as we return to love You. Every other shallow thing does not matter. Here is his full quote again:

But the full quote is not different in context than the paraphrased one. It says the same thing. Are those who don't like the inscription saying MLK was arrogant? Cuz that came out of his mouth.
Personally I don't want to pay a penny to change it. Looks fine as it is. We have bigger fish to fry and these small things add up.

There is no bigger fish to fry than realizing our need to love God and His ways with all of our heart and to love our neighbor as our self. That is where we are missing it in all of this confusion our nation is in. Martin Luther King got it absolutely right. Life is all shallow and superficial without that as our center.

IF the private foundation that built the thing and donated it were to fix it the job would be $5,000~$20,000. As more than 95% of the blacks voted for Obama, then whatever MLK wanted to accomplish, didn't happen. Blatant racism, lack of thought and investigation into what the policies and accomplishments of the two candidates, meaningful thought as to which one would better improve the life and future of black Americans and blatant vote gerrymandering.
Since Obummer took office, black unemployment has doubled. The number of black families with one parent has increased 40%. Real take home pay of blacks has decreased in relation to the real take home pay of whites. Blacks still make up more than 70% of the prison population. It goes on and on. Exactly what has Obummer done for his black half? How has he implemented what MLK wanted?

Their family was given millions to maintain the King memorial in Atlanta years back and "The Family" went through that money in a couple of years. And none was spent on the memorial. That is a lie... The federal government appropriated millions to the foundation. yes, private money was used as well, but the federal government kicked in millions! Also, the upkeep of the monument now falls under the direction and cost of the National Park Service which is entirely federally funded.

They had the opportunity to approve "I have a Dream!" They chose not to use that phrase which I believed from the beginning was most appropriate to begin with.

Forget theMLK memorial for a moment. All of you complaining about the NAthional Park Service paying for this memorials upkeep. I can solve your problem - shut down all the memorial, shut down all the National Parks, Padlock them all, reduce the PArk service budget down to staffing for security gurads to keep everyone out. That would go a little to reducing the deficit - the park service budget is 3.1 billion ot of a total US budget of 3.5 trillion (comes up to way less than 1%).

This is the same department that spent millions of dollars to "fix up" the tidal pool and did not think about algea. Nope. When you work in government you don't have to be smart nor frugal. So here we have an example of our money being spent without first putting this job out on bid. Some fat cat in the Interior Department just tells the original sculptor to do the job and we will pay somewhere between $700,00 and $900,000 or more if that is what the bill turns out to be.
Hint 1. Go to Home Depot and buy some motor and some color mixing dye and blend some motor that color matches the stome and fill the letters for about $100.
Hint 2 Design and place a molding over the letters made out of similar stone, Cost - about $5,000.

MLK did some great things and clearly left a mark and changed the course of our countries history, so IMO no doubt he deserves a memorial and glad he has one, but waste, yes waste, taxpayer money on an unneeded fix for something that is nothing more than a groups opinion is not an option. I don't understand why so many people get bent out of shape over something like the wording of a paraphrase on a monument when there are so many more pressing issues (at least in my mind) like hungry, suffering people; people still recovering from Hurricane Sandy; the looming Fiscal Cliff; and foreign policy issues that will no doubt affect our nation in the months to come. It's not that I don't think the monument itself is important, it's that I'm not sure how important it is to get the paraphrase in such a way that EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the country is satisfied. We can't even agree on politics or the budget-how could we ever agree on a monument? Heck, we can't even agree on WHO should HAVE a monument!

paraphrasing doesn't change the meaning of a statement. taking things out of context many times does.
wrong. president obama got 95% of the black vote while running against a party full of nut jobs. clinton got 93% of the black vote without the nut job handicap. blacks vote for the party that serves their best interest as did all the other minorities.
romney got 71% of the white vote. some of whom are not wealthy but would vote for the protector of the rich rather than vote for a black man.
Re screminmimi and Dawg Pound, for what it's worth, I think you both have the right to your views-just as we all have the right to view our ancestries the way we choose. My sister-in-law is approximately one quarter Native American, and she does not choose to focus on her Native American ancestry at all-that is her choice. I can also easily see why one might feel a special kinship with one's people who were being treated unfairly and a desire to see justice brought to them. My ancestry is not pure enough for me to know all of it, though a large number of people groups in the area where most of it originated have been conquered and oppressed in the past. I am not saying that what happened to my ancestors is equal in any way to what happened to yours, I'm not trying to minimize what was done to the Native Americans, nor am I trying to excuse what was done in North and South America-and I fully acknowledge your particularly unfair treatment.
It's interesting that you would give the statistics on Native American women being raped, screminmimi. Unfortunately, I don't doubt your numbers. It is certainly true that things like this should change, that non-native perpetrators should absolutely be forced to pay for their crimes. However, this sort of thing is a problem for all women, if to a lesser degree. Some say that 1 in 4 of ALL women will be sexually abused. Though I am not Native American I was raped by my father at age 10 then he gave me to his friends. That wasn't even the beginning of the abuse, nor was it the end-it continued for years after that. Not one of my abusers ever saw a hint of justice and the surviving members of my family don't believe me to this day-in fact, they have been very cruel and have called me a liar for saying that I was abused even though I have outside corroboration of some of it. My way of dealing with the unfairness has been to take what is mine and to let go of the rest-also forgiving those who have hurt me, not even so much for their sake as for mine, so that I can have peace. When I release all of that and I'm not looking for payback or revenge-I'll never get it anyway-it really takes a load off of me. Now I have freedom to move forward and not always to live in the past-I can leave the unfairness behind and make the future what I will. I've really experienced a lot of healing this way.
I care about Native Americans and I care about all other peoples as well. I guess since my ancestry is more mixed I don't feel as strong an identity to a particular people group. It's more like I have a soft spot for those who have been oppressed and abused in some way. Sorry to everyone for being somewhat off-topic.
where you got the 40% increase in one parent homes is a mystery. i watch a lot of news shows and even fox 'noise' hasn't made such a claim. the black community has always gotten the worst of economic downfall. as the saying goes, "if america catches cold, the black community catches pneumonia."

I was astounded when I read that under Obummer, black unemployment doubled since 2008. I also saw the statistic that one parent black families went up by 40%. It was also revealed that real take home black income plummeted and that over 70% of the prison population is black. It was also revealed that blacks choose they own race 80% of the time to inflict their crimes, their murders and abuse.
That is enough to say the whatever vision that MLK had so many years ago, has not been implemented.
Are you familiar with the term overcompensation? FDR had polio and was not able to walk, but he did swim daily and built up his upper torso muscles to such a degree that he could use his arms to pull him through the water without the aide of his legs.
I have suggested many times that this example be used by blacks, their leaders and the black community to haul themselves up to be superior to whites. Behave in such a manner, that the rest of the U.S. population look up to blacks and to emulate them, rather then to see such terrible U.S. government statistics constantly being published.

Remember that Germany with 1/3 the population exports 4 times what the U.S. exports. Obummer refuses to see the rest of the world and work out a formula for the U.S. to compete.

i concede i was wrong about clinton getting 93%. however, gore received 90-92% of the black vote (depending on where you check). kerry received 88%. these numbers indicate that african americans primarily vote democrat even when they're not voting against a party that blatantly perceives them as lazy useless leeches, sucking the life's blood from the economy. that not only cost black votes but votes of all other minorities especially hispanics who were referred to as "illegal aliens".

In this case he wants huge tax increases yet goes along with an expense of at least $700,000. There are 45 letters on the inscription. Obama, who has the obligation to take care of the dire economic situation that the U.S. finds itself in, is allowing over $15,000 per letter to be misspent to remove that inscription.

from my perspective this paraphrase did not have such a conventionally arrogant connotation as it does for others, but if it makes the collective mindset happy, then so be it. let us consider how much other monumental museology is formulated in ahistorical, asocial, summarized ways (like that phrase on the king memorial).

What if they just took off the "I was", and made it "... A drum major for Justice Peace and Righteousness." I feel like that's a good statement to have on the monument, even if it's not the actual quote.
I was thinking of the Drum Major from FAMU who got beat to death by his friends and buddies in the band during some kind of whacko hazing thing. FAMU is a famous Black University. Some band members in the University band were not students. Some had graduated years ago, or stopped registering for classes years ago. Some were never students at that University. Heck of a band though ! Band hazing at this school has injured several over the recent years. Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has put the University on probation citing the hazing death and a hand full of other mismanagement deeds at FAMU over recent years. They have one year to fix themselves or risk losing accreditation as a U. While reading the article I thought maybe the MLK family or the Foundation wishes to get the drum major thing off the monument and maybe it doesn't have anything to do with perceived arrogance of the comment. Anmd if they can get the fed employees to volunteer taxpayer's money to fix it, why, that is all so much better. Co-incidence ?

I remarked once before when this first came out that I felt it was awkward and yet it was not the inscription but to me nothing cast in stone can capture the vibrancy of Martin Luther King. The only thing for me in a stone monument for Dr. King is the reminder that he is gone. I would hope that perhaps a library or museum on the Mall at DC could host current civil right issues and projects. To me that would capture Dr. King's dream more fully. But mostly I believe we already have a tribute to Dr. King's life in D.C. and he resides in the Whitehouse.
Dr. King was a Christian who believed in freedom and liberty. That "man" in the whitehouse embraces neither.

4. Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda i s neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. Speaks for itself.
5. Rampant Sexism -
Governments consisting of certain political groups tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under these types of governments, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy to strip the civil rights of homosexuals. Reproductive choice, female pay-equality, women's rights, and other issues important to women are frequently opposed, such as abortion in the case of rape or incest. Only one woman in the RepubliCON caucus holding a chair of a committee, and then only after it was pointed out that they were all rich, old, white men. Look at the leadership in Congress, and it looks like a banker's convention.
6. Controlled Mass Media
Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in wartime, is very common. Media outlets controlled by these certain groups are often misleading in their publications or broadcasts, with a slant that is intentionally designed to propagandize and manipulate the population. Lush Rimbaugh, Glen Beck, Liddy, all of Fox... need I go on?
7. Obsession with National Security -
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses. "If you oppose this, you are committing treason, and inviting terrorists from all over the world to strike at a weakened America!" - George W. Bush speaking on behalf of the Patriot Act.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined -
Governments in nations led by these certain ideologies tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions. The Greed Only Party painting itself as religious, moral, family value oriented, and the only party that puts God first. The Baptist and Fundamentalist churches in this country are full of RepubliCONs...
9. Corporate Power is Protected -
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. Taxes for corporations are frequently reduced or in some cases eliminated, and corporations are often granted rights that individual citizens were intended to enjoy. In other cases, the right of Eminent Domain is abused, disguised as being intended for the "public good" Bain. That should say it all. If it doesn't, here's two more words for you: Citizens United.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed -
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed. Wisconsin, Michigan, all of the Southern Red States being "Right to Work" (which means they can fire you for no reason, and you have no recourse)... Hmmm... I'm seeing a pattern here.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts -
Nations dominated by certain political ideologies tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts. The National Endowment for the Arts and National Arts Council have suffered the biggest budget cuts in their collective histories under RepubliCON administrations, and are practically at the top of the list of Boehner and Ryan's "let's stick it to the poor folks" budget agenda. Do you even know what they want to cut?
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment -
Under the leadership of certain political ideologies, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in these nations. Hmmm... There's that pesky Patriot Act again. Department of Homeland Security anyone?

Certain political ideologies that are in power, almost always consist of groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders. Well, this one ought to be obvious. If not, two more words for you: Grover Norquist.
14. Fraudulent Elections -
Sometimes elections are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even media assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Certain political ideologies also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections. Florida, 2004. Ohio, 2000. The four manufacturers of "electronic voting machines" were all huge contributors to Bush, McCain and Romney over the last three presidential election cycles. If that doesn't scare you, then you need to move to another country.

I am with on all but 13. I have a brother who works for the UN. Much to my dismay (and his-we are both dems) He says that Obama is the worst when it comes to handing out US jobs in the UN. It also doesn't say anything about a fraternity but rather "The King family, the group that built the memorial and the National Park Service also were consulted about the change, the department added." Of course the article doesn't come right out and say exactly who is going to pay for it, and thats all most of us have to go on. FYI The Monument was built with donations, but when it was put on National Park Land in became part of the National Park, and it became part of their responsibility to see to the upkept of the monument. The National Park Debt. is under the Department of the Interior, and by law government has to upon all jobs to be performed to closed bidding. Even though the public never sees the bids, I can say that most of the time government almost always picks the highest bidder that is why you always see outrage costs that the government pays.

Dr. King and Obama are great men and the insults and references to value of the monument and religion of these great men are a reflection of the people making the comments.

BB, You really ask a question that speaks to the motivation of some people here. I personally feel there is a feeling of inadequacy for most of them. It seem that most of the "corrections" come from people that do not agree with the idea of your post and can only respond by attacking the person, not by responding to the idea.
With all due respect to Dr. King and the King family, I believe that this particular memorial should be taken down completely and replaced with one more fitting the man. This was designed, subsidized, and erected by China (don't believe me, look it up). All one has to do is look at it to see how similar it is to nearly ever old style Communist/Mao statue in China.
It boggles my mind how this was allowed to happen. If it had been completely done by whites, the black community would have been screaming about the lack of involvement of the black community. Where was that screaming this time?

The monument was carved in China to save money, but China did not pay for any of the costs associated with its manufacture or setting.
