CHICAGO -- A college student who moved from India to Illinois has won $1 million in a scratch-off game.
Asif Kahn, 21, who lives in Chicago suburb Villa Park, bought a ticket for the Illinois Lottery's Gold Bullion game three days before Thanksgiving at a Shell station in Hillside, Ill.
"I just took the ticket and went to my car, and I made a U-turn and went straight back home," Kahn said. "I walked into my house and I said, 'Mom, you're not gonna believe what happened."
He said he plans on using the majority of the money to pay off thousands of dollars in student loans, and then to eventually pay for medical school.

"I can actually imagine my life ... a better future," Kahn said. "My long-term goal is to be a cardiologist, relating to the heart. Science has always been a very broad field for me and I love it," Kahn said at a Wednesday news conference.
Kahn borrows his mother's 2003 Honda Accord every day to drive from his home to classes at East-West University.
He said his one splurge will be a new Mercedes. He also plans to transfer to University of Illinois at Chicago, now that he can afford the tuition.

This is great but he should drive the Honda and buy his Mom a new car. And there are lots of nice cars out there far cheaper than a Mercedes. I am glad he can now attend college without worry.
he can do whatever he wants. its his money.
I agree. Mom is obviously helping him while he is 21 and attending college. Pay off loans, buy mom and himself a new house. Cars depreciate time you drive them off the lot. What a waste of money. I wish I could win and do right by the lottery. I guess I need to play more.
Great! Now they're outsourcing our lottery winners.
But seriously, congrats to him anyway.
You can't win if you don't play !!!!!
A guy I know just reciently hit a 1 million dollar scratch ticket in the N.J. lottery, he just recieved his check the other day and it was a total of 570,000 after taxes! OUCH!! Hope this guy knows its not 1 million, sounds like 90% of 570. is already spent!! maybe a Honda wouldn`t be a bad idea after all.
the new great american dream hitting the lottery!
This young man needs to acquaint himself with American taxation. Just because he won a million doesn't mean he will get the entire amount... Uncle Sam is always holding out his hand for more.
However, I do enjoy seeing students get help with their loans, whether it be by lottery winnings or something else. My congratulations to this future cardiologist.
i mean, he could buy a used one.. i guess depending on make, it's not that expensive
While I agree that he can do whatever he wants with the money, the suggestion about buying his mom a car reminds me of my mother, and my first new car.
I bought a brand new, fairly expensive, car when I was in the Air Force. Only 9 month later, I got stationed in Okinawa, and you can't bring a car with you, so I let my mother borrow it since she her car was in bad shape. I was gone for 18 months, but when I got back, I did not have the heart to take the car, which I was still paying for, back. I gave her the car.
She was so proud that her son gave her a car. She died less than two years later. It was the best money I have ever spent.
A mercedes? Ya, I know it his money but come on.......Just because you have it, doesnt mean you need to spend it.......A million bucks doesnt last as long as most people think it will!
What a great story, Kevin. Kudos to you, man.
EatDirt is right. I know it's his money and he can spend it as he wishes, but man that $1M will go fast if he's not careful. The Mercedes will depreciate considerably the minute he drives it off the dealer's lot - it instantly becomes a used car. In another 10 years, it will have scrapes and dings and mechanical problems (if he still has it), and will be worth a fraction of its retail price. I do, however, admire this guy's ambition to go to medical school and pay for it from his winnings... a much better investment of his winnings.
Ah, the ignorant bliss of youth! Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and drop some financial advice on myself back when I was in my late teens and early twenties in college... not that I had any real money I could've invested, but had I been a bit more savvy back then and maybe bought some stock in Apple or a good mutual fund, I would be a wealthier guy today in my early 40's.
Give the fellow a break. He will probably take care of the family. At least he did not sneak in to get
advantage of our country. Just his way of thinking seems to indicate that he is thinking properly.
Good for him! He can spend it on ice cream cones for all I care. It's his money, and he can save it or spend it as he see fit. I'm glad he's using it to further his education. That'll probably be the best investment he can make.
Now on other hand, if we went to India.
The only lottery we would win is the: you need a tetnis shot lottery.
Only in America! Way to go lucky dude!
Kevin,
That was so sweet. Your mother brought you up right.
.
Good for him, sounds like he has his head on straight - paying off the student loans first gives him peace of mind. How many students come out of school, especially med school, without huge loans hanging over their heads? If he really wants a Mercedes, get a used one - or a new hybrid for his mom. I'm sure she's told him about taxes.
More examples of stupidity! It was $1 million not $300 million! I'm sure he will be the head of class, but it sad that the class he wants to be head of is the class of $1 million stupid winners. He will be broke in 2 months if not 2 weeks and his mother will still be driving her broken down old car.
I was thinking the guy was pretty humble up until the "going to buy a new Mercedes" part. $1 million (or probably a little over half that after taxes and everything) isn't going to last very long if he can't control himself.
RM FIelds--- you're right. That money isn't going to last long at all. Suddenly, he will also find a circle of newly found friends he never thought he had. They'll help him spend it while driving around in that new Mercedes. When I was at University of Michigan, we bicycled everywhere. Some of the greatest times of my life.
35% federal and 5% state tax leaves him with $600,000 take home money. Pay off the school and cash for the car, he'll still have a good chunk of change and if invested well, he will be ok. He just has to learn to say NO when everyone comes to him asking for cash.
The fact that he plans to use the money to finish his school to be a doctor makes me think that he's more grounded than most. Even if he splurges and still gets 75% of the way to a PhD, with no debt he's coming out WAAAY ahead.
A small Mercedes can be as cheap as $35k, doubt he'll go hog wild. But he should get his momma one too! She'd probably just say no, and not to waste his money. Best wishes on the cardiology pursuit, he'll be making $600k a year (at least) for his working life, with that field.
@annie-322924; GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!
When I was at University of Michigan, we bicycled everywhere. Some of the greatest times of my life. Annie-322924
When I went to the Uof Washington we took the bus. Seriously, he seems very intelligent to know what to do with his money. Hopefully he will buy his mom & himself a new car.
Mudderfly - Go Huskies!
f hill
the new great american dream hitting the lottery My dream too
George... Unless you're of Native American descent, we are are all immigrants here, 'pilgrim.'
So... how's that "E Pluribus Unum" thing working out for you? And... YOU DON'T HAVE TO SHOUT! We umm... get your "message."
"Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it. George Bernard Shaw
"Whenever you hear a man speak of his love for his country, it is a sign that he expects to be paid for it." H.L. Menken
Oh please, if you've never been a poor kid in a rich town you won't understand the significance, pride, and feeling of independence you feel from buying a brand new Mercedes by yourself. It's a modest $45,000 and it makes me happier than any of my other material possessions.
Women may not understand this, but as a guy in your 20's, image is everything.
Hey George. What native American tribe were your ancestors from?
After 200+ years you're still using that BS line? Give it up already, you sound like the Dems blaming everything on Dubya! Sheesh!
The laws for immigration were not setup by the native Americans.
@ STarbuck. MAybe it would have been better for the native Americans if they had stricter immigration laws. Close minded bigotry is masked under the guise of blatherers like you.
CC GWRider
Still blaming things falling on gravity! Sheesh! Just because you say stuff like that, doesn't mean the blame isn't warranted...but plenty of blame to go around for stuff. Got to focus on moving forward.
Oh and no Dems were blaming Bush on this board until you brought it up. Don't you have a "War on Christmas" to defend against?
Anyways...good for the kid. Hope it helps him become a doctor. Usually only the rich can afford the time and money to become doctors.
Like someone said before though, if I was going to buy a nice car, I would probably buy something other than a Mercedes. Ugly cars.
Best of luck to him!
Carl-3754200
That is EXACTLY what I mean, the immigrants that came here and took the land from the native Americans setup their own laws to let more come in. We wouldn't be here if they were not allowed to immigrate in the first place.
Effing unbelievable!!! Come on, people!!! Does absolutely everything have to revert to the old "Damn those immigrants" crap??? It's to the point that if the Earth was hit by a giant asteroid, it would be blamed on immigrants, too. Get a grip, you bunch of racist bigots. And wake up, we are here to stay, like it or not. Deal with it.
Jay
I'm all for immigration, 99% of the people here ARE immigrants, I'm just responding to the ones that say because he is from India, he should not be allowed to buy a ticket. The people that say that are ALSO immigrants too, and I point that out to them. As far as me being a racist, I'm half Russian on my mothers side, but born and raised in NY and married a Japanese lady. If that is racist, call it what you want, I am far from that.
Starbuck, I was obviously not referring to you...
Sorry starbuck, i misunderstood what you meant.
Great story -- until the line about buying a new Mercedes. Really? Don't get me wrong, I do not begrudge him one bit. In fact, I congratulate him on his good fortune and applaud his being responsible to pay off his student loans and medical school.
It's his money to do as he sees fit, but if I was his mom or dad -- I would be recommending that he purchase a more sensible, reliable vehicle, like the Honda that he borrows from his mother.
I was thinking the same thing. Then I realized how many others in his situation would take the money, spend all (or very near all) of it on fun/frivolous things, and end up still in the same hole w/ their debt as before - if not even in even deeper.
Let's just hope he sticks w/ his plan and doesn't let any "friends"convince him to blow through the money recklessly. And I liked the suggestion someone else had that, since he was borrowing mom's car, he buys her the new vehicle.
The kid is a 21 year old college student. He will learn the realities of life eventually. He can always trade-in or sell the Mercedes if needed. At least he is not blowing the money on parties, drugs and girls and is continuing on through school without the burden of student loans. Good Luck to him!
Sometimes investing in quality, pays off in dividends. That nice car will last longer, with proper care, then more cheaply made ones. It also holds it value much better should he need to sell it. Sometimes, it's so critical to have a dream to come true. Especially if there have been too many storms and nightmares in life. I think it's wonderful to see someone like this win the lottery.Having come from India, with a pop. of 1.22 billion of which most people struggle just to barely make ends meet, no doubt he will not forget his roots and how hard things can get. I like what he kept saying,"A better future." I get the feeling he understands hard work, and is knows about reality more then most people in their 20s.
I believe he will be careful with his funds. When one has gone through certain trials, they can appreciate so much more, and have gained a certain wisdom, not found in any other way.He appears to be a very caring person, thoughtful, intelligent and perceptive. I wish him well and good fortune in his future career in medicine.
I say GOOD FOR HIM for going to school to be a cardiologist. My son was born with a heart defect so I have a sensitive spot for ALL cardiologists! I guess, like most parents, I want to see this young man make smart decisions and do right by his parents who are obviously supporting him through his endeavors. Nevertheless, people are correct...it is his money. I just hope I don't see him on one of those lottery shows of "Where Are They Now?" and he's on the corner somewhere, panhandling. It seems like he has a great head on his shoulders and a good support system. Hopefully, all this will help him make sound decisions. And like others have said....SAY NO when people come with their hand out. $1 million after taxes in this economy isn't that much. Good luck to him and I wish him all the best! Now, let me go get myself a ticket....LOL.
Yes very wise choice for a young person to do, if they win MONEY use it for their EDUCATION FIRST. Save the rest for RETIREMENT. Because in the U.S. Their will be nothing for RETIREMENT but what YOU have saved. Good Luck.
Enjoy your Mercedes DOC!!!!!
the mercedes is a great choice. be careful though, Bam Bam wants to tax the sh&# out of you now that you are rich, but then so do all democrats. You would be much better off moving to a republican state Doc.
So do all Democrats......BS! That is an ignorant comment!
Stupid comment but coming from a republican, what can one expect?
Just when it looked like there might actually be a conv. that didn't involve politics, along comes cs.
the chicks will come now.
So he moved here, has enough to play the lottery and manages to take out thousands in student loans? Seriously? I now wonder how many kids come here and apply for student loans that are never repaid. My child who was stricken with cancer and has just finished months of chemo cannot work obviously. She struggles to pay off her loans each month since there is no forgiveness from the government but they hand out money to foreigners? Am I bitter? Darn right I am. She doesn't play the lottery either.
Everyone has that option to take out loans to pay for school. Defaulted gov't loans are garnished by the IRS after being refused to pay through a debt collection agency, so guess what? They get repaid despite what you say. The gov't gets its money back hand over fist. As for your child having cancer, it's a terrible event but it is something that can be used as a legitimate excuse to pay smaller payments or even have the loan itself discharged after a period of time after a certain amount is paid back... so your argument of there not being forgiveness is a load of BS because you're trying to line your argument against immigrants taking out student loans with a strawman fallacy that falls apart and doesn't support your hate.
Perhaps you and her should start playing the lottery. I hear that people win that, sometimes.
JPRhedd - I am sorry about your daughter's health, but that aside, your comment makes absolutely NO sense. Which money were THEY handing out to him? The lottery? - he paid for that ticket, and you could have too. OR did you mean the loans? The same loans as you daughter took out and is now paying back? He will also have to pay those back and he will have no forgiveness. His situation has absolutely NO relevance to what you are going through. Nobody handed him anything. He bought a lottery ticket and he won fair and square. And he will use that lottery money to pay for his education. I say that's a GOOD thing. Not sure how you made something sinister and conspiratorial out of that.
She's griping because he was able to get student loans. It doesn't say when he moved here, but since his mother lives here too it was probably when he was a child. He didn't just show up on a student visa and start taking out student loans. It also doesn't say whether he has government loans or private ones, but don't let that slow your hatred down any.
I don't see why it's so obvious that having finished chemo she can't work. I worked the entire time I was on chemo, only took off the few hours a week I had to be at the center.
Ever hear of deferment? They will allow you to suspend paying for a period of time in a hardship situation.
can we all just...get alone...
@Enough-2735007 Not sure what kind of chemo you had but it was not the kind that ravaged your body and caused you to drop almost 35 pounds in three months. Each treatment lasted six to eight hours so how you spent a handful of hours at the center is a miracle.
I am not griping about his getting student loans. I am angry that the govt. refuses to slow down the penalties for being late. Deferments do little when the penalties continue to accrue.
I surely do not hate this boy. Good for him and his desire to buy a Mercedes. I am sick of those students who come here and take out loans and vanish into the US and never pay loans or apply for citizenship. This new generation of PC people are absolutely killing the soul of the US. Learning to read might help some of you.
his 690,000 will be fine to buy a car or 2 and pay for tuition. with the babyboomers dieing houses are going to be 4 for each person, so that'll depreciate also.
but what O'bama blows the other 310,000 in taxs on will Amaze you, LOL..
35% federal and 5% state tax leaves him with $600,000 take home money.
You're the MAN, Khan!! But yes, use that money for med school and you later on you'll be able to afford whatever car you like!! And I'm from the Chicago area. And dude, why are you driving to UIC? You can take the METRA in!
All you posters before me should be ashamed of yourselves for criticizing his choices that were outlined in the article! Offering "backseat" advice like buying a "sensible" car instead of a Mercedes means that most of you didn't fully read the article and comprehended that his very first intention is to pay off his student loans and put a lot of that money towards becoming a cardiologist.
No... instead, you immediately assumed that his third intention of buying a Mercedes is his first thought on his mind. So, in assumption, you all have already been convinced that after getting his Mercedes he's going to blow all his money (after the gov't cut between fed, state and local taxes, close to 45%) on pizza, beer, and women. Even if it's not said, it's implied, and you all should be congratulatory and not be enviously green of his good fortune.
Quit being jealous you frakheads and be happy with the fortunes that come into your lives every day.
Edit- Leave BamBam outta this, or whatever you want to call him. Blame both sides of Congress for the humongous mess we have now, for because of them not trimming back some of the fat that got choked through, this astronomical mess of a deficit would've been smaller and you all would be complaining about it anyway.
the blame falls to ALL. NOT DEMS, NOT REFLUBICANS, but BOTH PARTIES. Its time to clean house in Congress. 1 Democrat, 1 Republican, 1 TERM unless we DECIDE TO RENew.
Well, Michelle Bachmann got reelected - I've kind of lost faith in the voters after that one. She is queen size nut.
with his 690,00 he can affor a car or 2 and med school. purchase wisely, wait on the house cuz when the Babyboomers pass on there will be 4 houses per person...thus driving the market down after med school.
What O'bama will spend the other 310,000 in taxes on will Amaze everyone...LOL (foodstamps, and free state checks to crackheads and lazy people who work the system thru generations of spitting out kids with no income and deteriorating life as we once new it.) the end..
bsmithcfr450. before you go belittling others, make sure you can "spell" and not use words like cuz, that show your mentality and your age.
Get a prenup. The parasites will be crawling all over you.
Great! Good luck!
If I was Governor, I would make sure you had to be a resident of my state and a citizen of the United States to play the lottery
I Luv Stories Like THIS! Good Luck KID!
Good for you kid. Don't forget your Mother. Buy her a new car too.
Talk is cheap. Let's really see what he ends up doing...
sweet now he can repay the loans hes got
These are the stories i like to see and hear about rather than the doom and gloom that usually associates with news.
