Boy Scouts leader arrested on child pornography charges

Nassau County Police Department

Edward Orenchuk III, 23, was arrested Wednesday on accusations of possessing child pornography on his computer.

A New York Boy Scouts leader was arrested Wednesday after authorities found hundreds of images of pornography on his computer involving children as young as five years old, officials said.

Edward Orenchuk III, of Garden City, N.Y., was charged with three counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child as a sexually motivated felony and three counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child, according to the Nassau County District Attorney's Office.

Investigators observed Orenchuk making multiple images of child pornography available for download online during August and September, and they tracked the source of those images to his home, said Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice.

Orenchuk himself indicated that he had hundreds of images of child pornography on his computer while his home was being searched, the district attorney's office said.

Orenchuk was an Eagle Scout who served as an assistant scout master with Troop 243 in Garden City. He was employed as a page at the Garden City Public Library.

The Boy Scouts said Orenchuk was dropped from the organization once they learned of the charges, the Associated Press reported, and a library spokeswoman said Orenchuk has been taken off the library's work schedule..

In mid-October, lawyers published more than 1,200 formerly secret Boy Scouts’ files online detailing accusations of child sex abuse within the organization from 1965 to 1985.

The documents, known as the “ineligible volunteer” files within the organization, were ordered released by the Oregon Supreme Court. Media organizations had sued for the release of the files, part of a 2010 case in which a Portland, Ore., jury decided that the Boy Scouts were negligent in allowing a former assistant Scoutmaster to associate with the organization’s youth after he admitted to molesting 17 boys.

The files, which can be accessed on www.kellyclarkattorney.com, represent reports of Scouts allegedly abused by more than 1,200 different Scoutmasters and other adult volunteers across the country.

Orenchuk faces up to seven years in prison if convicted. It wasn't immediately clear if Orenchuk, who is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, had a lawyer.

How many times is someone going to type "I could care less"? The correct term is "I couldn't care less". Anyway, I pulled my boys out of scouts because of their anti gay stance and the high number of perverts associated with this organization. I live outside of Portland OR and this was very much in the news. This is a creepy group.

Scouts are not anti gay. They simply will not let them join.

Check your church or any organization you may be affiliated with. Chances are they have their own set of similar problems.

Check on your teachers. Uh oh......

OIC. They aren't anti-gay, they are just pro-discrimination and bigotry, and are hetero-centric. Gotcha.

I don't care if the scouts admit gays or not. If you want to discriminate, go ahead and be stupid. But, if you openly recruit at public schools, that is wrong. If you are not willing to accept children as they are, then get out of the public schools. My kids are being raised by their mom and dad, but do have friends with two mommies or daddies. They realize that this is not the norm, but do not see anything wrong with it. Why do so many people care who has sex with whom? As long as all parties involved are consenting adults, why would any one care?

We've got a lovely bunch of cocoa-nuts here! Priests, coaches, scoutmasters, teachers, neighbors, relatives, etc., all guilty of violating the innocence of children. What if these relatively few accused and convicted pedophiles are simply the tip of of the proverbial iceberg with regard to deviate, predatory activity in our society? What does this say about the culture in which we live? What power on earth would it take to have allegedly responsible, trusted, people turn a blind eye to these horrendous, malicious, criminal acts against children? I'm somewhat relieved that there seems to be a legal and moral movement attempting to extricate these types from our lives. They should be removed from civilization in one manner or another. Those individuals responsible for these criminal acts must be dealt with in stark objectivity and punished severely under the law. But more importantly, those organizations, institutions, and leaders who stood by knowingly and did nothing to stop this horrible travesty against the innocence of children and humanity, should be relegated to something far worse by their maker. May they rot within their own minds, souls, and bodies, then be shown little or no mercy for their crimes of aiding and abetting denying and hiding these heinous, criminal acts. No penalty is too severe.

The "yeah, but what's normal?" generation hasn't earned the privilege of complaining about it's permissive creation.

hello there, am i hearing right that this is base on gay and other beings: let me put it str8 this way. this hopeless of a man was tempted by one thing, is the mental of the mind. he who looked at such nonesense is trouble from the first start and why of all people, didn't the scout laeder known of this when is back on. one, they need to check point the ones who are having trouble with children of all ages and 2. chek on the back ground of what not to keep thy children safe. with what one adult can a child trust. not one of us are to be trustworthy if thy child knows thy person. then is trust worth. loook at us are we willing enough to be trusted as humans or as beings. this man was mentally illed why was not the leaders aware of this. in conclusion. don't blame anyone thats is on the other side of gay. just be careful some whats menat be one of yours friends. if ye see the differents. look at your self. are you one of them too. check yourself out a make peace. thank you. the angel his spoken

Interestingly, Sarah, the prominate gay rights organization NAMBLA doesn't believe same sex attraction between men and boys is pedophelia. It's simply a normal expresssion of how they were made and it is just plain wrong to discriminate against them. This is just another example of societal and BSA intolerance toward a behavior that occurs naturally and cannot be changed.

A lot of you people are just plain a holes you can not blame this on gays or religious people or teachers(school are not religious or gay ). It happens anywhere there are little kids, how many vans are in the news trying to pick up kid. they join the group becasue they have little kids if they had a strait atheist group of kids you would find the perverts there also. So the point is stop looking at groups and look at any where there are children better yet a child.

Let's just take the left's approach: ban Boy Scouts. If Boy Scouts never existed, this wouldn't have happened.

We should also ban breathing. If murderers couldn't breath then they wouldn't be alive to kill people. Oh, the left is so smart.

Why does the LGBT community feel they need to push their lifestyle on a children's organization? If a boy "discovers" that he is gay...can't they keep it to themselves? Why the big announcement? What happens in everyone's bedroom needs to stay there and I mean everyone gay, straight, bisexual etc.. I have a right as a parent not expose my children to what you do in your bedroom. That doesn't make me a bigot.

Do you expose them to what you do in your bedroom?

Point being: sexual activity is not all there is to a same sex relationship, any more than it is all there is to a heterosexual relationship.

You really should work on your issues of being overly obsessed with what goes on in the bedroom of a same sex couple.

Where are the parents? There was no sign that this guy was trouble? Come on. I pulled my daughter from a softball team because of a coach's attitude towards the girls. The guy would make anyone's skin crawl; but the other parents were okay with it as long as it was a winning team.

Which is why the scouts should not be allowed to recruit on the grounds of public schools. Any group and be discriminatory and/or be stupid. Just keep your business inside the churches and what not. If your group will not accept kids as they are - gay, straight, atheist etc., then stay away from the schools.

Wrong. "Came to believe in a power greater than myself" is one of the steps in working the program. It is not a requirement for membership. It is not even a requirement that anyone work the steps. And AA defines that "higher power" as anything that gets you through the day without a drink. It can be identified as the AA group itself. AA in no way attempts to define a "higher power" as anything but an individual perception.

Institutions that give an adult the ability to be a role model & command such as the boyscoutts, sport coaches and in the old days, boarding schools which normally where run by the religious sectors, ALWAYS attracts pedophilles. I was abused as a child and I don't want to say something that is mean, but i am gonna say it anyway... here it goes.. this guy is definitetly a scorpio.. or either ascending or as his sun sign.. the eagle nose & closeness of the eyes are definite traits of the highly sexual scorpio.

Uh, no. He has been accused of having sex with an underage teen. Age 16-17.

A pedophile sexually molests pre-pubescent children, not adolescents. Once a child is an adolescent, they are too old for a pedophile to be attracted to them.

So, while he is gay, and has always been very open about that fact, he is not a pedophile.

But this Donkey is very conservative as were the Spartans who were a fierce fighting force and mostly gay when on campaigns and as were the folks who:

                                  2. gave women the right to vote

                                  3. established the national park system

GMatlack may think he's a conservative but riddle me this: how does excluding large groups of people CONSERVE the power of the people?

Unfortunately the few of us real conservatives left get crushed by the wealth in the Republican Leadership. But if we let our party fall to the wealthy then where do our loyalties lay? With a party that has doubled the national debt in just 4 yrs and thinks that by increasing spending in times of reduced income that we'll create wealth for the people???

I happen to think that the BSA is a very good organization, my youngest is a scout and as a responsible parent I make sure to be with him at every moment, camping trips...etc.... I do have to admit that I thought about it a lot before getting him involved, he had been asking to join since kinder, but all those stories about sexual child abuse scared me. You see I am also a victim of sexual abuse, when I was 12, but it was a family relative...my point is that these pervs are every where not just in Scouts and not just in the Catholic church. We as parents have a responsibility to our children to be as much involved in all extra curricular activites and make sure our children are safe. The BSA is not a day care

What can we learn from this, how can we protect our children? Maybe BSA should give boys a badge for self advocacy? Does the BSA fingerprint, run a background check? If you keep these evil men's deeds secret you will only attract more, and more. Yell it out let all know that this will not be tolerated that they are not welcome at your church, at your school, at your park, in your organization.

My first complaint is that CNN pointedly refered to him as a scout leader, although the charges against him have nothing to do with the Boy Scouts of America. He is also a page at the library, does this cast the library in a bad light? Much has been said about homesexuality in regards to this story, even though it is not mentioned at all, and there is nothing to suggest any boyscouts were involved in the pictures. As others have stated here, I do not fully support the BSA administrations positions on gays, and would like them to revise their opinions. They are basically trying to cover all bases in order to protect the boys, although it is a generalization to suggest that gays present a greater danger, and I believe each case should be evaluated individually.

I had heard of this "list of 1200" but knew nothing about it, so before writing this I took a quick look at it. I only looked at 4 files. One was based on an actual prosecuted case. One was a parents report and I quote "we did not want to report it to the police" because they knew the family, but they did report it to the BSA so they could investigate the individual. Another was between two adult leaders, one reported what the other had done towards him, no children involved. The fourth one was in 1969, the persons scouting background was questionable, and in an interview had admitted to homosexual tendancies and some inappropriate behavior towards some scouts. The end result of all of these were removal from the scouts and leadership responsibilities. Also keep in mind that molestation was handled much differently during that time, parents often covered up what happened to their children. If I had nothing else to do I would read more of the files and I believe they would read pretty much the same; accusations, self addmitalls, adult concerns, and questionable backgrounds. Not every case would have been prosecutible, and the law enforcement attitude was much different then. These are "secret files" because the information was confidential, not because the BSA was trying to hide something.

Regarding religion, look at scouting.org and look up the religious badges. There is a religious bage awarded for most major religions; Catholic, Protestant, Baptist, Mormon, Muslim, B'hai, Hindu, Buddist. The BSA is not a Christian organization, it is a faith based organization.

All of those making accusations against the BSA are showing that you have been listening to tabloid media and not really looking at the facts, such as looking at the secret list to see what it really contains. Child molestation is going on in all parts of our society, even within the family and among family friends.

For the record, I have several gay friends, and I would trust my children with them. They should be free to live their lives. It does not mean that their sexuality should be flaunted in everyones faces, just as my own should not be.

Make such acts punishable by death.

Looking at or distributing child porn?

Or do you mean making it?

To Kalikapika, yes the BSA runs a background check on every parent volunteer and every leader, and you must take a course and pass all the BSA tests. Let me remind you that this perv was an Eagle scout not a parent or a head leader.

Background checks are only effective for weeding out the people who have already been caught and convicted of a previous offense. They do nothing to prevent those who have not been caught yet from infiltrating the organization.
