A wintry storm on Thursday was hammering Southern California with rain that triggered mudslides, flooded streets and worsened a "king tide" across the coast.
At Sunset Beach in Orange County, seawater gushed over streets and parking lots, and NBCLosAngeles.com reported one man in his swim trunks even stood outside his home with a fishing rod.
The king tide, an especially high tide that occurs only a few times a year, was also producing some large waves.
In San Diego, dozens of accidents were tied to the storm, NBCSanDiego.com reported, and flooding closed off various roadways, including at least two highway ramps.
In one accident, a mechanic working on a school bus that broke down on a road suffered serious injuries when the bus was hit by a car, pinning the man underneath, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
More than an inch of rain fell within three hours in parts of the city.
Swift water rescue teams were deployed to help people stranded in their cars, while mudslides cut off several streets.

This boulder rolled into the garage of a home in Poway, Calif., on Thursday.
Farther inland, a six-foot boulder crashed through part of a home in Poway, where the rain had been heavy.
"I went into the garage and I saw the washing machine on the floor and then I looked over and saw the rock and couldn’t believe it," homeowner JeNielle Rose-Gendelman told NBCSanDiego.com.
"It’s a big mess, and a big boulder, and I don’t know how it’s going to get out," she said through tears.
The highest tides of the rainy season bring the possibility of flooding as water reaches street level in some regions of the state. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

I kept trying to feel the sensation of this story and am just not seeing it but then I'm not from California so maybe that's why. One inch of rain in 3 hours and "at least two highway ramps" closed? Nope. Not impressed.
Two highway ramp closures cause people to drive like maniacs because here in California people become complacent when the weather is anything except sunny and clear. They don't plan for alternate routes.I was born and raised here,61 years old,and am still baffled by the lack of people's driving skills when we get 1/2 inch of rain.California is home to millions drivers from every state in the U.S. and add on millions more from other countries.I'm surprised that we don't have more accidents and fatalities. We need the rain and I think we're headed for an El Nino year so these little Nancy's better hone up on their driving skills and leave earlier for their destinations.
I've seen 3" in one hour in south Louisiana, so 1" in 3 hours not so bad, but in Cali everything is dramatic.
Evening...Hmm here are the Philippines with tens of thousands of people homeless and near on a thousand dead from cyclone Bopha. Samoa in the Pacific flattened yesterday by cyclone Evan. Hundreds are homeless there and they are "sooking" about a few inches of rain in "plastic fantastic" California...geez get a grip people...
wow look.....rain...
must be a weekend.
Remember: It's not people who make the news, it's the media which makes a big deal of anything different from the "normal."
To the lady in Poway with the boulder in her garage... Don't worry, nobody was hurt and your homeowners insurance will pay for the damage and on the bright side... do you know how much boulders cost? If I were you I would have it moved into my landscape. Think about what a great conversation piece it would be!
kelkea,Excellent post and great money making idea for that lady in Poway.i
