Guns are as available as Arizona Ice Tea and Skittles at your local convenience store. There has to be a way to control the flow by greedy gun manufacturers both domestic and abroad. For one, make it impossible to get guns without having a permit to own one in the first place. You must go through a comprehensive background process, and pay for it, in order to get a permit to purchase a handgun or rifle. Gun manufacturers must have federal limits on the number produced and exactly where they go when leaving the factory and tracked by serial number to end sales. Same with ammo. 2nd Amendment protected and police know where every single gun is in the nation.

What about all the killings by gangs and criminals. In Chicago alone almost 2400 shootings and 500 deaths. Before you start with the law biding citizens how about cleaning up the guns from the known criminals first. You have to go through a background check now. At one time it was illegal to consume liquor and everyone drank. I own a gun and I for one don't want an intrusive government looking over my shoulder. First clean up the criminal aspect of gun ownershipn and then discuss how to limit the rest of us.

@Tracontech: Really??? 1. Let's put a limit on how much money you can make for your family (like you want to do with the gun mfgrs) and see how you like it. 2. Everyone who buys from a licensed dealer already has to go through a background check (and pay for it), so the gov't knows where A Lot of the guns are and can confiscate them much easier (and does). How about instead, we quit punishing those who are not criminals for what the criminals are doing. Every community that has outlawed possession of firearms has seen a drastic increase in violent crimes, while communities that have required everyone to own a gun has seen crime drop dramatically (crazy sounding but it happens). Guns are not the problem, people are.

@Mom90210: We're proposing limiting guns just as we do narcotic prescriptions, alcohol, and tobacco, sweetie. 40% of guns bought in America have no background check requirements, which vary from state to state. No one is advocating outlawing gun possession, just knowing where every single gun is located by serial number and the background of the owners. Transfer of guns from person to person should be illegal unless done through legal means. Yes, we do need to know where every single gun and every box of ammo was sold and to whom sold. Today we witnessed yet another terrorist act on American soil. Something has to be done to limit the carnage, because we all know it can never be totally alleviated - just as with drug and alcohol abuse.

@Guy Fawkes: Its absurd to think that all illegal guns must be policed before we can control any new gun manufacturing or sales. That's like saying you have to get all the spilled water cleaned-up before you patch the huge hole in the dam that's broken. Get real, no one is advocating banning gun ownership. Everyone I know says its time to limit the proliferation of guns and ammo in America. Stop new guns from ending up on the streets illegally and do thorough background checks on potential gun owners that includes their mental status and law breaking before they can get a permit to own a gun. Legal and law abiding citizens will pay for their background checks and be permitted before they can even hold a gun at any gun point-of-sale. Selling or transferring a gun illegally should be a high felony that carrys 20 to life.

Its very tragic incident. Being parents I know how hard to even think about this incident. I still wonder Why none of TV or media people talk about gun control policy? Dont we think there is something wrong with laws if the guy with semi automatic rifle can walk to elementary school and kill innocent children. I really hope President OBAMA does do something meaningful as he said during his speech this afternoon. My heart goes with family of children who has suffered both psychological and physical stress due to what happen this morning. very sad day for country and world.

tracontech, and what happens if the guns were stolen by him? Won't you feel like a complete moron then??? And I laugh everytime I hear that arguement that people with criminal backrounds are all dangerous violent people. It's ridiculous, can you use some common judgement? Someone who has been to jail for possessing marijuana is probably not a violent person, and you assuming that they are horrible people for making a mistake and going to jail only further causes violence. Once they are released from prison, they have paid their debt to society and should be treated as any other citizen.

This is senseless, But This is not a Gun issues, Don't let them take your guns away. this is an issue of Drugs and the millions of people on anti- depressants, and Psychotropic drugs and the people who know about their loved ones who are unstable but ignore their behavior it's an epidemic in this country we'll see much more of this because many sick people can't cope.

tracontech...You are So uninformed and making statements that have no basis in facts. Gun laws are

set by the Federal Government. Background checks are always Federal and sometimes there are extra State and or locale requirements . Criminals do things that are against the law. That is why they are called Criminals. No amount of laws will stop a criminal from doing criminal things. Only tougher enforcement and much more severe punishment of criminals will have any effect. Automatic death sentence for anyone selling street drugs will slow the sale of these drugs. Long prison time at Very Hard labor for anyone that buys these drugs will slow consumption. Since this type of law enforcement would reduce the number of

people that would need the services of people in the legal professions, do not expect lawyers or any

of our elected officials, since many of them are lawyers, to come forth and advocate strict law enforcement. Do a crime and be ready to pay a very high price.

IT'S NOT THE GUNS that are the problem, IT'S The PEOPLE behind them...It's the people that have mental problems that don't get help and those that have a yard long criminal record that get out of jail back to a life of crime with no other skills and those that don't have permits to carry...The laws are all there but you have to ENFORCE THEM in order to make them useful...

"Gun manufacturers must have federal limits on the number produced and exactly where they go when leaving the factory and tracked by serial number to end sales."

There is a problem with that though. Not all guns are to say already built. Handguns are, but not rifles.

For example, lets take the AR-15 Rifle. You can purchase one already built..or you can build it your self. The only thing that is needed for a background check is the lower receiver, at least here in NY. This is the part that is consider that shoots the gun..All it is, is just a hollow piece of aluminum. Everything else can be bought with out checks..stocks, upper receiver, sights, barrel and so on.

Now how do you propose to limit this? They are not made just by one company as per say a Glock Handgun. They are made by MANY. Some companies may only make this part and that's it.

Just do a search on - AR-15 lower receiver manufacturers

You should get the first hit to AR-15 site that lists a few of them.

Same applies to ammo..Every Box? Ok..no need to buy boxes..I will buy in bulk..Track that too? Ok fine...I will just buy the shells, primers, and heads separate and make them my self. I have friends who do this now because it is cheaper..though expensive for the tools to do it. Prime example I am talking about is the site goldenwestbrass.

Thing is also people who do get them legally pretty much are tracked. Most states already have a quick NICS check. I think over 5,000,000 a year are done? But how many of these are stolen? We already know we can't trust our own Gov. when it comes to this as they hand Assault Rifles to drug lords just to try and track them.

"We're proposing limiting guns just as we do narcotic prescriptions, alcohol, and tobacco, sweetie."

But everything you just listed here can be abused. Narcotics? How many Hollywood stars you hear died of OD? Because a Dr. keeps prescribing them the drugs? Limit on Alcohol? How so..I can buy as much as I want. Tobacco? Same thing, I can buy as much as I want. They are age restricted now, but so are guns. So I am not sure if I understand what you mean by limiting here.

Now one thing I do agree is that all States should have a standard checks and balances. If one state checks and another doesn't then that should be looked at. Here in NY you are deemed a Criminal for the rest of your life if you are charge with "Possession with a Burglars Tool". It's a minor misdemeanor, a screw driver can be consider this..can be an idiotic thing you did when you were 18 but it is with you for the rest of your life under NY law. Guess what? NY Considers it a Serious Offense and with that, you aren't allowed to Carry or Possess a firearm. BUT attempting burglary isn't consider a Serious Offense..go figure!

Jen, yet again, assuming that all people with a crime on their record or with a mental illness are violent is counterproductive. I have ADHD which is a mental illness, should I not be allowed to own a gun because of it? Furthermore, do you REALLY want Republicans legislating thought crimes? Those jokes? Everyone who is gay or has thought of cheating would eventually be sent to prison or given capital punishment just for thinking those things. I'm a liberal here and I'm more pro-guns and rational than most people. I'm not in favor of gun control because it's unfair and counterproductive.

hard to understand why.? but it happened and it's tragic. instead of blaming guns, the school staff, the local law, may be we should look at our selves. we parents here in the us have allowed our self to be dependent on a flawed public system to educate, raise and protect our children. instead of looking for someone to save us. maybe we should take some responsibility for our self's instead of screaming for some new laws, bureaucracy or new agencies or some hand of the gov. to keep us safe may be we should think about what we can do. my daughter goes to school on-line and i don't depend on any one but me to keep my children safe. this is truly horrible thing, no one disagrees on that! we can let the government take care of you from cradle to grave. they can't keep you safe any better than you can. it is necessary to maintain a free state, that the people have the right keep and bear arms.

You are probably only a few clicks away from the MONSTER that perpetrated this evil deed. And if you're wondering why i said 27 human beings, instead of 28, I don't count your Gun Buddy who used his toy to murder 27 souls as a human being!!! Hug your toys well tonight & be joyful that you'll be able to spend the holidays with them. 27 family's wont have that opportunity!!

It will be the same thing with the guns and the gun industry. That will make the gun industry eager to TRACK their guns and make sure that the guns are in the hands of RESPONSIBLE owners. You will be amazed at how many measures they will come up with.

Make it harder than hell to obtain a gun and maybe these nut jobs won't be able to get their hands on one. the good guys will be able to get one....even if its a struggle, but if it helps prevent just ONE more massacre of this kind then it is worth it. @ProudToBeAnAmerican: The government cannot balance the budget or even fix the current sequester that is looming because Republicans refuse to allow new revenues, they demand cuts and only cuts which won't work to fix our deficit. Unemployment rate is decreasing - what bubble do you conservatives live in nowadays? Liberals don't want guns outlawed, you must be seriously laking enough brain cells to function as a valid human. Concerned gun owners like myself just want everyone who buys a gun or ammo to have a permit to do so. Getting this permit requires a mental and criminal background check... nothing more. Guns are sold to onwers like cars, that must be licensed and reported to law enforcement and tracked by the federal gov. Now what is so difficult about that? Stop the continous flow and then work on cleaning up what's already out there illegally...

It's so tragic and avoidable. Violence is sold via mindless games every day to young people and guns are sold randomly to anyone who wants one. And all we hear is the need to protect gun owner rights. In England if you want to commit suicide you have to hang yourself or jump off a bridge. People with the IQ and social concern of a parking ramp are allowed to buy guns in this country. There is a reason police and law enforcement folks are almost unanamous in their quest to get some kind of meaningful gun control in place..........because they see this kind of hellishness every day. Which god ? The useless one which allegedly could have saved these children and teachers, and all the consequent suffering but didn't ? Or the one who enjoys blood sacrifices and human torture ?

I suspect both you and I would have intervened in this situation if we could have, and so have much better morals and concern for human well being than any non existent desert deity.

Moral education, concern for others, they certainly belong in schools, but fairy tales belong in the home. If you choose to feed your children nonsense as fact, that is your right, they won't thank you for it when they realise how theistic claims do not meet the standard of evidence in reality.

Those "theistic claims" are what drive people to be morally grounded and responsible. They encourage love and compassion in the community and they teach MOST of us that there is something better to strive for and live for and also gives us hope in situations such as this. Tragedys like this break Christs heart as much as ours. But, He doesn't seek to control us. He seeks to have a relationship with us, which we must actively pursue with our whole heart, in every part of our daily lives (work, school, home, etc). And if we all sought a living, breathing, personal relationship with Him, then we would not suffer these tragedys. Hopefully, you will see that one day.

Hey @happy4.... don't even bother answering misfits like that chicken-leg @Peter Sanders, whom I am sure knows that that the moral foundations of society, and the norms and standards that allow us all to live together as much in peace and harmony, (until these derelict atheists come around), are anchored in CHRISTIANITY, and the philosophy of community sharing and support from the teachings of GOD! There's nothing and I mean nothing of these principles that these damned atheists can show for , let alone even teach their own children along the concepts of "love-for-thy-neighbour", good and bad, and right and wrong without references to Christ and God, and by so, contradicting themselves and their hateful doctrines and that of their brothers from the "New" Garden-of Eden#2 of "Adam and Yves"...LOL!

Merry Christmas to all, and may we learn how to better share our humanity, from this kind of tragedy that again proves the theory of the one "bad apple" syndrome....

                          #6.3 - Fri Dec 14, 2012 6:14 PM EST

Hi there Geraleve, I will refrain from ad homs. The claim that Christianity is required for people to live together peacefully is not supported by the evidence. There is a strong correlation between peacefulness and lack of religions, including Christianity, for example Scandinavian countries. Yahweh is not a peaceful god at all, requiring blood sacrifices and in fact even sanctioning the murder and torture of his own son.

The notions of "love thy neighbour" are not restricted to Christianity. Nor are they well adhered to, for example almost all the people fighting on both sides in WWII were self proclaimed Christians. Most people in US prisons enter as and leave as Christians, and then many go on to do more evil.

The fact is that being a Christian does not immunise someone from mental illness or sexual deviancy.

Society needs to put in place mechanisms to catch people before they go out of control with weapons, because there are no caring gods going to do it for them.

To "Happy" "Tragedys like this break Christs heart as much as ours." Well so you say, but if a) such a being existed and b) it could act, why wouldn't it do anything to prevent it ? The failure to act is just as immoral as the act itself in this case. And I am sure you and I would have done something to reduce the suffering in this case ? So we actually have better morals than any entity which could have acted an didn't. Or are you saying he is impotent ? You can't have it both ways "Happy".

How about, he doesn't exist at all and we are responsible for our own actions ?

Any entity which could have stopped this with a well placed heart attack and didn't is evil and not worth worshipping and praying to. Good thing there is no evidence at all that it exists.

Peter , why would God intervene , from the first man till now , mankind has decided to do things his way instead of God's way . We want him out of all public arenas & want him kept in homes behind closed doors & then we cry foul when his hand isnt in situations like this. I personally believe God is involved in all things to some degree , if for nothing else , to show us how we are without Him & even then , in his grace , he lelps those that have eyes & hearts focused on him . He did promise that after weve had our way & he has had enuff of our way , he will make known himself & every knee will bend & as for his own , every eye will be dried & his peace & love will make all things new. YES , THATS THE YAHWEH you spoke of & you know its true . A long time ago , ive found that if you throw a rock into a pack of dogs , the one that barks the loudest is the one you hit & you sir , althop , are no dog , the bark is clearly heard. Go ahead & profess atheism or agnostic & then try & ignore the voice you fight so hard to silence in others & in your own mind n heart.

I have been saying for a long time, it should be mandatory as a teacher in the U.S., that they have a weapon on them and know how to use it. This kind of thing could not happen if all the teachers were armed. Criminals will always have guns, and the innocent need to be protected.

My heart goes out to all the familys that have just lost a loved one. However the gun was just the instrument that was used, it does not make guns bad, a gun can't fire it's self it takes someone to pull the trigger. We should have the right to carry one, if the teacher or someone else in the school had one they could have stopped the lunatic before he killed all the innocent people.

I agree with the President that there has been far too many of these mass shootings in recent years and as a parent and a gun owner something has to change. I would think that raising the age requirement to 25 or above would be a good start along with a psychological test of some sort for all gun buyers..There are far too many young people out there in their 20's who are just not responsible enough to give a weapon to, young people are to engaged with themselves and don't consider the consequences of their actions yet. I own many guns but I am well into my 40's, I would not have wanted to own a gun in my 20's..We will never get rid of all of them but it should not be so easy to get them either !

God bless the victims and the family's...My heart goes out to them all, I cant imagion the pain they are going through !

My heart goes out to all the familys that have just lost someone they love. However it was not the gun's fault, it takes someone to pull the trigger. This lunatic could have just as easily used a pipe bomb. If every adult carried a gun there would be less killings as the madman would have died not all the innocent. We have a right to protect ourselves from ALL that choose to harm us and those we are responsible for.

I honestly don't know the answer, but I can think of every possible scenario to get around everything mentioned. Phychos can talk the talk. He can get one illegally whether it be an age limit that is stopping him or that they are banned all together. If you are willing to do something like this to begin with, you will find a way to get a gun. Just like drugs. Sad, sad, sad. I really can't think of a good answer to the problem.

Had their been an armed person inside that office. 20 children may be alive right now. How about for once, let's not make this political. Can we, for once, just come together to mourn a horrible tragedy that took 20 precious children from this world?

Problem is, all it takes is one crazy teacher to be in a bad mood one day and then its 50 kids the next time. There is NO good answer to this madness. Terrible tragedy....my heart goes out to these families.

If a psycho or criminal wants to commit a crime,or a mass shooting spree. They can obtain a weapon legally or illegally , They can obtain the drugs that make them go off legally or illegally, The laws are for the criminals, and against the innocent. Bring back, and enforce the death penalty in all 50 States. You will be amazed how the crime rate drops. We can all formulate our own opinions, and resolutions to stop these kind of incidents. The world is going mad. As the economy, and jobless rates increase.More people will do desperate and crazed things.Once again God Bless all those familys and people who were involved in this terrible incident. Problem with that Philly is that they are killing themselves afterwards! They don't care about penalties! These are all KIDS (25 and younger) that are doing these killing sprees. This isn't induced by economics. These are pi$$ed off kids for some reason or another.

I truly think that alot of this has to do with too much coddling as small children. Parents not parenting and being their childrens friend. No spanking, no repercussions for their actions. When you get sent to principles office, its no big deal. They don't care. There needs to be fear brought back to kids about being punished for wrongdoing. anymore everything is the teachers fault at school and the parents back the kid....not the teacher. "My kid does not wrong" mentality. Its in the raising of these kids nowadays. That and the fact that there are too many "fatherless" homes. No more "family". Its just a sad world we are all living. Its only going to get worse.

Simply put there is no place in this society for automatic or assault type weapons period. I don't need an automatic or a AK-47 to defend my home and my wife. Most of my hunting arms are single shot and for years my law enforcement sidearm was a .357, all more than adequate for either need. Simply put there is no reason that those types of weapons should be able to be in the hands of those that have committed the past crimes and the current one and should be totally banned from sale to the public in this country and be illegal to own. Only then maybe we will be able to stop the wholesale slaughter of innocent adults and children by the type of wackos that seem to be increasing by the day. My heart and prayers go out to those who have suffered loss in this tragedy.

They were both legal & owned by the mother. Incidentally , the killer is said to have aspergers & ocd & had other mental issues.

The coward that did this horrible act was the son of some person, did the family not pay attention to this individual or see any warning signs? This coward murderer has a social page that makes wild statements, warning signs all.

Did not the neighbors, coworkers, fellow students of this 20 year old young man not notice anything? Or did they, and then tell themselves that it was not their problem? How well do you really know your neighbor, coworker, or fellow student? Does our decision to be ignorant of the lives of those we rub shoulders with on a daily basis absolve of us responsiblity to our fellow human beings? How can it be that this self described "tight community" is now saying that they really didn't know the Lanza family? That they kept to themselves....etc. If we each reach out to one person today with a sincere "How do you do?" or pay it forward act of kindness to someone who we know but don't really know might go along way to stopping some of these acts of violence that are masks for feelings of extreme desperation. I pray for this community and all affected by this unspeakable tragedy and I pray for our society as a whole - so many, many people are lost and we need to help them find their way to a place of faith and peace.

This includes the first responders who now have to live with this horrific event. These children were our future now we have to do something more to protect them. I think change is necessary on many levels. Right now lets be sure that this community knows they are not alone!

There's no need to be selling assault weapons to citizens anyway, in my opinion. You don't need a gun with that kind of power outside of a war zone. Ridiculous. Take THOSE guns out of the picture, and it will improve. Prayers for everyone out there involved.

The Sweden massacrte and a school in Russia had a similar thing happen. The problem isn't the weapon or its avaiblbilty it is insane people. Get rid of the insane people and the problem willbe solved. The weapons used here were two Glock 9mm's not assualt weapons.

It's not a question of too many guns it's a question of not enough guns. Man, LaPierre would love you. grooveshark.com/s/John+Lennon+So+This+Is+Christmas/4yzNLd?src=5
