Authorities ID gunman who killed 27 in elementary school massacre

NBC's Pete Williams has more information on a report that Connecticut school shooter Adam Lanza may have been involved in an altercation with staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary one day before the murders.

Undated photo confirmed by government officials to be Adam Lanza, who apparently killed himself after killing more than two dozen others, including 20 school children.

A day after the Newtown massacre, gunman Adam Lanza’s motive – and any personal demons – remained a mystery.

Lanza, 20, was identified by authorities as the black-clad killer who fatally shot his mother, gunned down 26 children and adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and then committed suicide on Friday.

His older brother told authorities Lanza had a history of mental problems, but the nature of them was not clear. Former classmates remembered him as a brainy and quiet teen who sometimes wore a pocket protector.

Tim Arnone told Reuters that he first met Lanza at Sandy Hook and attended Newtown High School with him, where the two were members of a technology club. He said Lanza was "driven hard" to succeed academically by his parents, particularly his mother.

Nancy Lanza and her husband, Peter Lanza, divorced in 2008, according to public records. Peter Lanza could not immediately be reached for comment but has spoken to police.

Joshua Milas, who graduated from Newtown High School in 2009, told The Associated Press that Adam Lanza was generally a happy person but that he hadn't seen him in a few years.

"We would hang out, and he was a good kid. He was smart," Joshua Milas said. "He was probably one of the smartest kids I know."

Catherine Urso, of Newtown, told the Associated Press her college-age son knew Lanza. "He just said he was very thin, very remote and was one of the Goths," she said.

Law enforcement officials initially told NBC News that the gunman was Lanza's brother, Ryan, and they had sent out a bulletin to local and federal law enforcement agencies to that effect.

But when authorities went to Ryan's home in Hoboken, N.J., to search it, they unexpectedly found him there.

Ryan told police he was not involved and that his brother has a history of mental health issues and might have had his ID even though they had not seen each other in two years, officials said.

A senior official later said that Ryan was nowhere near the shooting, was not believed to be involved, and was cooperating with the investigation.

Lanza's aunt, Marsha Lanza, of Crystal Lake, Ill., told the AP she was close with Adam Lanza's mother and sent her a Facebook message Friday morning asking how she was doing. Nancy Lanza never responded.

Marsha Lanza described Nancy Lanza as a good mother and kind-hearted. She said her husband saw Adam Lanza as recently as June and recalled nothing out of the ordinary about him.

Nancy Lanza’s mother was too distraught to speak when reached by phone at her home in Brooksville, Fla., the AP reported.

"I just don't know, and I can't make a comment right now," Dorothy Hanson, 78, said in a shaky voice as she started to cry.

NBC News Justice Correspondent Pete Williams contributed to this report.

Authorities are investigating why the alleged gunman would have killed his mother at home and then killed so many children. NBC's Pei-Sze Cheng reports.

The Media should not publish the names or pictures of these scumbags. They should die, and be buried without acknowledgement. The shooter should be refered to as IT. They are not worthy of being identified as anything more.

It shot innocent children & adults, and it died. PERIOD!

There is no rhyme or reason to these types of massacres. You can argue that we need gun control...but you can buy illegal guns on most street corners. You can argue that mental health providers aren't doing enough to help people. You can argue that his late mother shouldn't have owned a gun where he could access it. But if not her gun, he would have found a gun - some how, some way.

I think one of the primary problems is how the media and video games have glorified death and killing and the perpetrators. No, stopping the media from reporting or make the violent video games illegal won't solve the problem. Millions of people play video games without ever hurting or killing someone.

There is nothing we can do to stop these types of killings in malls, theatres and schools. If this guy hadn't had the gun, he would found another way to hurt his mother and the children in her school. He was determined to kill. Period.

B.S. It's just so obvious that guns and mental illness don't mix. It's not that mental health workers don't do enough. It's that there aren't enough of them and it's too expensive, and there's too much stigma, to access them.

Unfortunately, America, and conservatives in particular are anathema to spending more on mental health or restricting access to guns.

There have been tons of studies on video games and violence, very little evidence of any link. The only true link to this kind of violence is guns in the hands of the mentally ill. There is a 100% correlation.

It is long past time for all public school to bit the cost and start installing walk through metal detectors and also all doors to the main building locked at all times with a security guard at the door.

These nut jobs who would take others with them when they go completely nuts need to be stopped from doing these deeds at all costs.

I would gladly give up that freedom if it meant that it would save one child from what happened today.

We have to change the way we do business in public school nationally.

Please stop with ur need to fix this ... some people go crazy and then they go out and hurt others... it's called the human condition and it can't be fixed !

          Reply#66 - Fri Dec 14, 2012 6:58 PM EST

Yes it can be fixed. You diagnose, restrain, track and treat these mentally ill people as though they COULD do harm, not that they may or may no. You restrict their rights to machinery, licenses, etc. You track there whereabouts and you register them with the police if you don't have the stomach to remove them from the population as was done before. This liberal bull crap from the 80s is now coming back to kill our children. AND you protect schools as you would any public building that has precious assets - armed guard, locked doors, metal detectors and searches. What's the right price for the death of one innocent child, let alone many??? We CAN fix this - take that to the bank.

Glad you are not the ruler of this country. You can't lock people up in this country for could, thank God.

We don't know what troubled this idiot - we only have his brother's comment about previous mental problems. That could be just about anything. Some reports are that he was autistic - again, hearsay.

Why don't we wait on some substance before we allow you to start walking off people you suspect might be a threat?

Does having mental illness disqualify someone from having the protection of a hand gun. That would mean a woman that is raped and has depression is mentally ill but can't defend herself with a gun. Mental illness is a broad term. Bullying leads to schizophrenia, so does the victim lose their right to protect themselves with a gun? I think mental illness is a scape goat. It really is too early to tell what the specifics of this case are to pass judgement. I hate guns. But to blame mental illness is kind of convenient. We glorify the gun. Kids get the message that violence is tolerated. I would be the first to say anyone that would kill children is twisted. But I will wait for more information after the trickle of the news media and the leaks. In our town, we had a shooting rampage that left 6 dead. Yet, I am not sure why it happened to this day. The shooter was angry he didn't get a job. He was a loner according to the news articles. He was jealous. There were many warning signs. He complained alot. But there were no mental illness issues that surfaced. He had a gun and he was frustrated to the point he wanted to seek revenge. It would be easy to say he was crazy. Today's dead shooter may have had mental illness, 1/3 of our returning vets from the middle east are either brain injured, substance abusers or PTSD which is mental illness. I think they have earned the right to carry a gun even if they are mentally ill. Needless to say the shooter was one unhappy camper. I'll be interested in hearing about the warning signs if any and who dropped the ball. My post is to start a conversation about gun ownership and what seems like an ever increasing number of mass shootings in the USA.

YES! Without mental stability, the ability to safely (in terms of others not just yourself) carry a weapon is non existent. Judgement is not there, safety is not there. No exceptions. None, nada.

I agree..this is tragic....the violence in the gaming community (Halo; special Ops, Call to duty) all these violent video games; a mental health system that is broken; people "not wanting to get involved if someone is acting strange"; families without enough resources; guns in homes; no parental help for children who are acting out; allowing games like this in a home with children; drugs available for every occasion; marijuana now available in many states; churches that breech all levels of value and morality; tragic on too many fronts anymore. Gun control is deplorable; I think everyone needs to purchase their guns from police departments (IMHO) Savage wars; endless violence in our world..have we had enough? and when is enough enough for this country?

Gaming? Good Lord - that's ridiculous. Then what about TV, movies and comic books? My guess is he wasn't even involved in gaming, he was a recluse and non-social being so far as they have said. Stop trying to find a place to blame this except to put this on the parents and the MD that was treating him or at least knew of his illness. Society has to reinstitutionalize the mentally ill - period, and track those out on "parole" with electronic means, as well as restric them from licenses or privileges that could develop into a safety issue for the population. Period.

How and why did Kindergarten teacher possessed not 1 but 4 Guns and ammunition who gave them license and why first place you need so many Arms and ammunition?

What is the US Government doing about this shoot outs this is not the first time this occurred and what have they done...Stop giving Arms to unwanted people, strictly enforce rules and regulations and educate people who possess to safe guard arms and ammunition.

Can someone ask this questions to our federal government?

I request all those who possess arms please secure it and keep it in safe lock n key and keep it away from young kids....please this is my humble request.

This event is tragic and very sad. My heart goes out to all involved. No words can comfort any of us or make it less painful for the families who have suffered such a loss. There have been many of these horrific acts over the decades as many of us can remember. There's no sense to be made even as hard as we all try to place blame on a motive, a weapon or response. There is little that any law, metal detector, guards, or searches could do to prevent such an event from happening again. There's no argument to be made here, for anyone that is willing to give up there own life(not having any respect for human life theirs or others) would be unstoppable and would find a way to do so regardless. Today we should all put aside any political differences or anger towards each other. Take time to hold those important to us, tell them and show them how much we care. For none of us know if we or they will be here tomorrow.

Guns are the best way of turning rage and fear into dead people. They are cheap, they are widely available and they make killing people FRIGHTENINGLY easy. You point it, press a button and then PEOPLE DIE. When you think about it it's almost absurd. Humans are irrational, they are impulsive, and when the threshold for death and carnage is only the pull of a trigger away how can you even trust a normal person with one.

Even more than limiting access to guns though, we should have an honest discussion about the net impact of handguns in America, and stop the fear and arrogance that makes people convinced they need to have a handgun. There is much talk of liberty when it comes to owning a gun for self defense, but guns are also the best way to permanently take away every right anyone ever had. You want self defense? Get a taser. Also, we need to look at access to mental health services, which are either unavailable or extremely expensive for average people. Even more broadly we could look to people's education and employment. Is it leaving them with a sense of empowerment, or are they trying to use guns to find it. Gun control SHOULD be discussed now if ever, but we also should see it in the context of larger American challenges.

What is vastly more important than HOW this young man killed 27 people, is WHY he did. Our society has, in recent days, seen a number of killings of innocents by deeply disturbed individuals. Perhaps, instead of arguing about whether gun control is needed, or whether IED's or cyanide are a better murder weapon, we should try to concentrate on restoring the belief that human life is the greatest gift we are given, and, that to take it away is the most heinous of all crimes.

I respectfully suggest that we begin by stopping the entitlement attitude most young people have, by stopping the idea that we have to constantly give our kids more, and more, and yet more, that we re-institute consequences when those young people do unacceptable things, and that parents begin to do their jobs with the responsibility inherent in becoming a parent in the first place.

Whether we want to admit it or not, we seem to be on a very slippery slope leading to a society in which anything goes, where the individual's needs and wants triumph over everything else.

At the risk of being mocked for being a realist, I again respectfully suggest that society in general re-evaluate its aims and goals, and makes adjustments as needed to restore sanity to a populace which is rapidly spinning out of control.

Here is an idea, how about the media show some respect and not sensationalise this event. You are making this animal famous you morons, also how can anybody have the nerve to stick a microphone to one of these kids for an interview ? I see kids giving comments on what they heard and saw, and people wonder what is wrong with American society these days ?! Anything and everything goes for shocking news coverage and the worst part of it all is most people cant even see it. This isnt about guns, video games or anything related to that. Ever since the government took the parenting away from parents and traditional Christian values from the schools this country went down the tubes. The more the media mentions the "shooters" name the more it will encourage these tragedies to repeat itself. I doubt the rating hungry media moguls care though, Im so disgusted right now.

In 1790, after the passage of the 2nd Amendment a mentally unbalanced person takes two load state-of-the art firearms into a crowded place and fires them into the crowd. By the time he is apprehended, X people are dead. When searched, the perpetrator is equipped with a powder horn and several unused rounds. How many people do you think were killed?

In 2012 a mentally unbalanced person takes two state-of-the-art firearms into a school and fires into crowded class rooms. By the time that person is apprehended 28 people are dead. When searched the perpetrator is found with several 15-round clips, all empty.

Now, what is common to both scenarios: The 2nd Amendment is the law of the land. The perpetrator is unbalanced. The perpetrator had two loaded state of the art firearms with enough ammunition to reload.

Now, what is the difference between the two scenarios? The answer might give you some idea of where the solution lies.

You have a mentally ill kid (ok, 20 year old) and you have guns around. How sick is that. Just a recipe for disaster. Unfortunately he took innocent children with him.

                                              Keenan;

Your heart is in the right place, but the reality is, Guns will never disappear from the US. For example, look at Meth & Heroin. It's totally banned and ilegal. Is it gone? If a person is going to kill others, they will find a way. that idiot could have just as well carried in dozens of pipe bombs and a Zippo, and even more people would have died. Our only hope is a strong defense.

The problem with guns is that if you are mad NOW the gun is there NOW and ready to use NOW. That's why there are waiting periods on guns, so you cant buy one and use it 30 minutes later to murder someone. There is a better chance of someone being enraged for 5 minutes and going crazy with a gun than there is chance of them being enraged for a couple days while they build a pipe bomb. Is the average unstable moron going to be able to build a bomb and use it while they're still mad? The gun is so much more direct, an extension of their rage, more primal.

Does owning a handgun really make your life safer? I believe at least one of the guns used was owned by the teacher, probably for self defense. It seems ironic, but is not rare for gun tragedies to work that way. I refuse to believe that there is something other than a remote chance that I would need to use a gun to kill someone to save myself. If I feel intimidated, I would find a different community, find different friends, or keep a low profile, rather than contribute to the insane arms race to make everyone able to kill everyone else as easily as possible. That's no way to run a society. I'm worried about the few crazy people with handguns, but I would be more worried if every average person had a handgun.
