Updated at 11:55 p.m. ET: Residents from around the region streamed Friday into St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Newtown, Conn., to mourn the 20 children and six adults who were killed when a gunman opened fire in an elementary school.

A memorial Mass got under way at 7 p.m. ET at the church, whose pastor, Msgr. Robert Weiss, spent much of the day at a firehouse that had been turned into a gathering place for families affected by the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The church was packed, and hundreds of people who couldn't get in stood silently outside, where 26 candles were set up by a tree wth a cross. Some held hands, praying as a group. Others reverently touched a statue of Saint Rose, the first person native to the Americas to be canonized by the Catholic Church, before crossing themselves.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy was among the speakers at the service inside the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic church, The Associated Press reported.

"Many of us today and in the coming days will rely on what we have been taught and what we believe, that there is faith for a reason," Malloy said.

The service was just one of many prayer services and vigils planned across Connecticut through the weekend, NBC Connecticut reported. A statewide moment of silence was observed at 9 p.m. ET.

Elementary school massacre: 27 killed, including 20 kids, at Connecticut school

After the vigil at St. Rose, Weiss told reporters gathered outside that six or seven kids who had attended the church were among the 20 children who died.

“I think the families are very broken,” he said. “I’m sure that they’re still wondering and questioning. I think some of them are still hoping that this really didn’t happen. The rough days are just ahead of them.”

People file in to St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Newtown, Conn., to pay their respects to the victims of the shooting Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Just a short drive away, parishioners at Trinity Episcopal Church shed tears during a solemn prayer service. The quiet crying grew louder when the Rev. Kathleen Adams-Shepherd announced that two children, members of the congregation, were among those killed.

Adams-Shepherd had spent much of the day at the fire station with the families of some of the presumed victims.

"I don't think we'll ever be the same," she said.

"There are no words,” the Rt. Rev. James Curry said in the prayer service. “There is nothing that we can say but instead we cry out. We cry out in shared grief and pain for the loss of so many children, so many adults .... We do not understand, and we cannot imagine why someone would murder. We cannot comprehend."

Alex Moe, John Schoen and Miranda Leitsinger of NBC News contributed to this report from Newtown, Conn.

The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that killed more than two dozen, 20 of them children, left the quiet community of Newtown, Conn., desperately trying to understand what happened. NBC's Kate Snow reports.

May God grant peace and comfort to all involved in the Newtown shooting. Now is not the time to get hysterical over gun control. A guy went in a China school and slashed 33 students. You don't hear calls for outlawing knives. To outlaw guns will bring the same problems prohibition did in the thirties. If some one wants to do harm they WILL get a gun.

May God grant peace and comfort to all involved...

What a load of crap. If you ever needed proof that there is no God, this is it. If God is all knowing and all powerful, He could have prevented this tragedy. The fact that He did not do so proves either that He is an a$$hole and not worthy of your devotion, or else he doesn't exist. Take your pick.

Red, if god prevented every single problem on earth, there would be no point in being here. Tragedies happen and none of them are gods fault, they are mans fault. God didn't kill 6 million Jews, the Nazi's did. God didn't kill 60 million Chinese people, Mao Zedong did. And god did not kill these 28 people, the crazy nut job did. You expect that if there is a god, he is supposed to solve all your problems for you. Well guess what- IT DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY.

heartofcompassion-I agree completely with your insights and thoughtful comments. There are so many in this world, who make fun of people of faith. They are incapable of being able to understand or even to realize the great comfort, strength and peace which comes from turning to one's spiritual relationship with that Great Being, known by many different names around the world. God, Heavenly Father, Creator,I AM,Allah and so many other names. At times like these, they have refuge, guidance and peace, which those without faith, simply don't have.

For the religious blessed with such faith to turn to, it allows them to endure the heart breaks, storms of life, trials and temptations to seek revenge and feel hatred. Helping to developing the capacities of love, forgiveness, empathy, patience, tolerance , meekness and hope. For they see this life, not as an end of existence when it is over, but a part of something wonderful, which awaits. To leave God as the judge, who knows all things. And comfort those who mourn.

People do have their agency to choose.Sometimes that is evil. As was pointed out, that is not God's fault. Life seems to be a constant testing ground to see what we will choose. And our character is slowly revealed by the choices that we make.

I know what you're saying, Red. The bible is full of G*D intervening. The only two things I can think of is...

G*D doesn't intervene when HE wants a problem driven home in a big way. Mass murder is a temporary shock to those not involved, and then pretty much forgotten about until the next time it happens. G*D must want us to solve this on our own as a nation. If we can't do this, what happens when the next disaster happens, and the next and the next. We are solely reliant on G*D when HE gave us free will. We work with HIM. Not make HIM do all the work while we become helpless cripples.

Same with national karma - the karma we carry as a country. The problem gets worse when karma is ignored meaning the lessons, as in, solve this to some degree, get more and more obvious. For every friend who doesn't want to snitch. For every parent who thinks, not my kid. It adds to the nation's karma.

Either way this will keep happening until every person in this country feels it's their responsible to stop it. Not just the police, FBI, Washington.

Redneck, God is never to blame. All of man's maladies are the result of man's choices (that always fall short on virtue, faith and love).

Modern man - particularly those who deny God - seems to see himself as his own savior. We all see repeatedly how mankind can't save itself from anything. Today is just one more example of how the temptations of Satan can affect a human's mind to do whatever.

And frankly, Windancersong's comments are offensive since they are so modernist and ecumenical. The One, True God was revealed to the world and yet in the name of political correctedness (again, man being his own savior through "logic") He is negated to be simply the "great spirit" that takes on many forms and names based on cultures and falsities of man.

Your logic of finding "proof" is flawed. I would be happy to discuss it if you care to discuss my meaning. I am not a thumper, and I don't care if we refer to It as God - but I contend Philosophically that 'God' exists forever incompletely defined except conceptually as "Being The Eternal Moment Everything". It, "God", is literally "Everything That Exists". I'm not seeking to preach or argue with a hostile individual, I'm only stating that my perception is as valid as yours even when expressed in logical terms.

        #1.9 - Sat Dec 15, 2012 12:12 AM EST

First and foremost, my heart and prayers go out to ALL those involved and affected by Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. In fact my heart and prayers go out to everyone involved in any of these senseless tragedies that have racked our country as of late. Lord, help us all!!!!!!!

In response to the previous comments, how quickly we forget that just like there is a God, there is also an enemy (the devil). People are always so quick to blame God for the things that go on in the world but there is evil out there as well. Unlike God, evil does not want to see people happy and at peace.

What we all need to do now is stop blaming God for our weaknesses and irresponsibility's and ask him to help us all stay in our right mind. When we pray and keep God first in our lives the enemy (devil) won't be able to take control. We need to start taking our children to church to learn about God instead of taking them to movies that teach them nothing but violence and other things. We need to teach our children how to pray and how to treat others with respect and kindness, not let them come home and sit in front of the tv or play video games all day.

All this unnecessary crap that is going on in the world today is nothing but a war between good and evil. For those of you who are not familiar with the Bible, pick it up and read the book of Revelations, that's where we are right now. The end is near, I agree with that, but no man can predict when that is. Only God can do that. We need to stop playing God and start worshiping him.

Your God (who doesn't exist) is evil if He really does exist.

When you say you "will pray", what you really mean is "I'm not going to do anything about this, but I want you to THINK I'm doing something about it."

You religious nuts make me sick. You are the problem here. You cause incidents like this! Don't you get it?

Certainly real in my understanding. If one are says that we need to define God (Self) by living as to represent a good, loving, caring, happy Being who understands we are all part of God - then I agree, but I think too many perceive a vast war between good and evil. Faith in, and belief In, God is knowing that the expression of this Being in Time shows It contains all Good and Evil - but the complete Being Lives beyond the concept of Time as the Infinite Idyllic Existence. Resolved and distilled to only good before and after an eternity of human definition (in the quantum state), as only One living beyond Time can (in the Grand Unification state). It has already happened...we should hurry to define the reality in Time. The sooner the better.

          #1.12 - Sat Dec 15, 2012 1:38 AM EST

Look, if you're gonna thank and praise this imaginary god when things go right, you have to -- by right -- blame and curse him when things go so horribly wrong. That's logic. You can't say, "Well this god is the source of everything good, but when something bad happens, no no no, he's not involved at all."

It doesn't work like that! If your god saved THIS child from being shot, by absolute logic, that means he killed (or willfully allowed to be murdered) the one who was five feet away.

And predictably, we have desperate, gullible people filling up the church pews again for answers that aren't there. It'll be the same crap... prayers, thoughts, tears, candlelight vigils, blah blah blah, but NOTHING will change until we do something about gun violence in America. It's lunacy how we can call ourselves a civilized country yet allow (over and over and over again) our neighbors and children to be gunned down.

If little five-year-old girls being slaughtered at their school desks en masse doesn't get this country talking about gun control, nothing will.

I'm currently living and working overseas and in all the years I've been living abroad, we've never had candlelight vigils for victims of mass shootings. Not once. Why? Because there haven't been any shootings!! No handguns in society = no handgun violence in society. It's really pretty simple. And you don't even need to pray on it.

Hello Thinkforyourself, I don't know if you're talking to me exactly because I don't think as you described.

Look, if you're gonna thank and praise this imaginary god when things go right, you have to -- by right -- blame and curse him when things go so horribly wrong. That's logic. You can't say, "Well this god is the source of everything good, but when something bad happens, no no no, he's not involved at all."

I don't know if you noticed, but I wrote that It (also called God) is literally Everything that exists in Time - fully containing all time to infinity. I do not say it requires praise, I say that we define it in a quantum existence contained in Time. Nothing that is or ever has been or will be can be excluded from It. The Holocaust - all God. The face eater in Florida and the man whose face got chewed - both God. In Time it is necessary to establish a 'this' and a 'that' an eternal difference as a point of reference (the focal and balance point). I know the words God and Jesus put off atheistic thinkers - hell, they put me off for twenty five or thirty years. If we are discussing the same topic, "What is the meaning of existence? What does it mean to 'Be'?" - then we don't have to use the words God or Jesus at all.

At the same time, I recognize it is not only a matter of semantics, but of opinion. I am always going to be right and wrong - according to my own theory - while I live within Time, and so are you. We know that over Time all discrepancies are reconciled into quantum differential. We argue over the details throughout the future, and no matter how closely we define a thing there are always more details to resolve because Time extends literally into and out from a growing infinity. No, no prayer. Rational understanding of existence is recognizing we're all part of the same single Being - and deciding whether or not we think "It knows". I think It knows, and I think it laughs Its blissful, figurative, virtual ass off throughout an infinity of existence - and offers us the same if we'll only describe It Being that way. It takes a long time on purpose.

No G-Dog, I wasn't addressing you specifically. I think your most recent post is a load of new age hooey, but everyone has their own opinion. I tend to be a realist and a pragmatist. You, clearly, are neither of these. And that's okay.

What I was advocating was a national dialogue on real gun control that can, for once, discount this perverse and ill-reading of the 200-year-old Second Amendment. Because it's not worth the price America pays in the blood of its citizens, up to and including some of its youngest ones.

              #1.15 - Sat Dec 15, 2012 4:31 AM EST

Hi Think, hah, had to laugh at the "new age hooey" critique. I also tend to be a realist and a pragmatist, and find your basis to assume the contrary as unfounded as your assessment my philosophical logic - which also happens to incorporate observation and use of logic to rational conclusion. If you can't see it, that's okay.

At least we agree on our reading of the Second Amendment and the need to have better training, licensing, and accountability for our guns than our Dogs. The obvious arguments for and against guns is about the same - "otherwise, force wins and might makes right". Everybody says they want the same outcome but it easily devolves into an "Us against Them" argument. If we make an effort to see where the other fellow is right and find agreement - the differences reduce to relative variance in opinion, perspective, and semantics. True, there does seem to always arise an unintelligible noise in opposition (often stemming from fear) which seems not to accept reason - while reason incarnate is what we are. Everybody confined within time is always going to be right and wrong, and most will spot somebody elses wrong before they can see how they could possibly be right in any way. New age hooey, heh heh.

The posts above me illustrate why I laugh when the atheists cry about being persecuted. They went to the church to pay respects to the victims which none of you people are doing right now.

Apparently, after reading some blogs here, those who believe in a God are speaking on behalf of God to explain God's inaction or non-intervention. Who appointed or annointed these wonderful wisemen to be the voice of God? Are these people suffering from arrogance or self delusion?

Those who do not believe in a God are claiming this tragedy is proof that there is no God. If there were a God, they claimed, God would have stop this madman from committing the horrific murdering of children.

There is no irrefutable proof that there is a God or no God. It's all by faith. A big leap of faith.

Just in one day, the combined total number of murder in five major American cities, Detroit, Chicago, NYC, Los Angeles, and Phili exceed the annual combined total number of murder in five nations, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Same comparison holds true for rape and burglary. This is irrefutable evidence that America is a violent nation whose people are under financial or psychological siege by a massive number of criminals within and without of prisons.

If there is a God, America better pray for redemption. If there is no God, every American better own several AK47s with a barrel of ammo!

                    #1.19 - Sat Dec 15, 2012 7:41 AM EST

This kind of evil cannot be stopped, put a armed guard at every school, store, station, whatever, and it still will make no difference. A person intent on murder will walk up to this guard and stab him in the back while smiling. We stopped treating mental illness unless the person had money to pay, even with insurance it did not cover the cost. Even now it is after a mentally ill person hurts someone or them selves are they given any help. Actually I do not believe in a mental illness, I believe in a medical brain injury or disease. I believe in human beings becoming so insensitive to death and pain that they do not care anymore. Children playing with games that glorify the murdering of innocent people or games that spew so much gore it even makes a grown person cringe, but we allow our children spend hours upon hours playing them.

No one in China or alot of other countries are allowed to own firearms but read on. An attacker with a meat cleaver hacked seven infants and two adults to death in north-west China today despite police efforts to stem a wave of school killings that has terrified parents across the country.

A further 11 children were injured in the attack at a nursery in Hanzhong city, Shaanxi province, which took place at 8am, soon after the start of school. A resident said most of the children were aged between two and four. The alleged attacker Wu Huanmin, 38, killed himself, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Guns do not kill. People do. And the fault lies with the evil in the human race. You may not believe in God or the Christian Bible but it does give the best explanation as to why this happens, from the sin of Adam and Eve, to the sin of their son Cain who murdered his own Brother.

Would someone plese explain why these murdered babies have to lie on the floor at this school for two to three days, this is cut and dry, why put these parents and loved ones thru that. What can the cops hope to accomplish by doing that, there is no need for an autopsy as the cause of death is very evident. Its bad enough that these loved ones have to deal with the murder of thei children and others but then they are forced to know these babies are being subjected to what?

Even in the days when the caring of a gun by everyone there were senseless murders and they were not done by law abiding citizens either. You will never be able to take the guns away from the criminals or anyone else's hand's who is trully intent on murder.

Being raised in the era of the cold war and the Cuban missle crisis where we got under our desks.

The world and this country are far worse off then they were then. I grew up with the threat of a nuclear attack. I have never been so afraid for this country as I am after watching the effects of yesterday's tragedy. These are innocent children who had no choice to be brought in the world. I have seen way too many instances of child neglect and gun violence. I have nothing against the computer age and social media . I do wonder how much it has to do with the violence we have in today's world ? This is the 21st century and we are more advanced than any time in history.

WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY !!

I sometimes wonder how many of these killers are acting out a video game ?

I grew up in a sugar coated world. We had newspapers and Television then.

I never remember this amount of violence.

Maybe we need to focus more on our children instead of the social media ?

It might take some effort . It is much easier for them to learn from TV or a computer.

The only problem with that is what are they learning ?

I have a 5 year old grandson who is very intelligent.

When I am with him I focus solely on him and he learns very easily with me.

He is behind in school because his single mother is more focused on the social media or what is on TV.

I realize it is a tough economy out there . A few minutes of your time will not hurt you economically.

Once you decide to bring children in to this world you have an obligation to give them every chance you can to have them grow up the best way possible.

I was having a hard time getting sleep before yesterday.

I found it near impossible last night.

TO ANYONE WHO MAY BE CONSIDERING AN ACT LIKE THIS... PLEASE READ THE COMMENTS BELOW!

I want to reach out to ANYONE who is watching and reading about the tragedies that have unfolded in the past, and specifically yesterday at Sandy Hook Elementary, and earlier this week at Clackamas Town Center who may feel lonely, misunderstood, desperate, hateful, or lost. Please reach out to SOMEONE in your community. A fireman, or neighbor, a store clerk, schoolmate, or a helpline. Call someone at your local television station, but tell someone how you feel and try to get help before considering an act like this. Call me if you like..503-320-5886.. I will help you.

You not only hurt the people at whom you direct your bullets, but many many more. For every person you kill or hurt there are at least 20 other lives affected negatively. You don't need to have your fate be as the other boys eventual suicide.. there are people who want to help you. Just reach out and tell someone BEFORE acting. You are NOT alone, there are many who feel there is no hope for them, and want to be heard. Taking up a weapon is NOT the only answer. And although you may get your name in the news, It will not help You, or anyone who feels like you do. There are ways to make the pain you are in go away.

In my own community, the shootings at the Clackamas Town Center not only hurt the victims, their immediate families and friends, but the hundreds of people who worked at the Town Center, shopped there, the merchants, their families. The wave of hate extends so much farther than you could imagine. Please seek help before acting on your instincts.

I also hope that someone in the media, will take heed, and ALWAYS when reporting these senseless acts, REACH OUT TO THOSE WHO MAY FEEL THE SAME AS THE SHOOTERS FIRST! Give numbers to call, show public announcements that give information on how to deal with desperation, but for heavens sake, DO SOMETHING other than just report the names of those who commit acts of violence against groups of strangers and communities.

Getting rid of guns is not the answer, helping the people (especially our youth) to understand the ramifications, and above all ... REACH OUT to those you know who are outside your immediate group of friends. Stop bullying and making fun of people who have less than you do or act differently than you do. Open your heart to all in your path. ONLY kindness and understanding can stop these acts from happening.

It's almost like you Atheists blurt out words before you think about what is being said.

Kind of like rednecklawyer9 @ 1.2. It's amazing how atheists will deny God exists, then blame Him when evil happens. That's rather schizophrenic, if you ask me.

What these people need is for the news crews to pack up their crap and roll out of town, and leave them alone. And we the people, stop mainlining the media and feeding them so they stop going after each little tidbit coming out of tragedies. They don't care about these people, and newscasters shedding tears don't mean a hell of alot when their angle is to one-up each other.

Leave 'em alone. Let them cope and begin to deal with this as best they can and begin the long, long, life-long road to healing.

This is not the first time a deranged person has shot a classroom full of kindergartners. In 1996 at Dunblane Primary School in Scotland, a man burst into a room full of 5 and 6 year-olds and killed sixteen small children and their teacher.

Following this massacre, handguns were banned in the United Kingdom, and now the UK has one of the lowest rates of gun homicides in the world.

Now is the time, America, for us to stand up and say NO to the gun advocates and start enforcing stricter gun laws.

Take a look at this link of the children and their teacher killed in Scotland, and think of the children and teachers killed yesterday.

It's funny how the gun advocates want to use the argument that "Guns don't kill people. People kill people" but then blame God when a tragedy happens. Well I say, "God does not kill people. People kill people." He provides us with free will. The opportunity to look at a situation and make a decision to do what is right or do what is wrong. Don't blame God. Blame mental illness, poor government oversight about mental health programs and gun laws, blame poor parenting, society's desensitization to violence through promotion of gore and violence, the romanticizing of gun owner's rights...whatever you would like but do not blame God! In the end it is each person's decision to decide. America... we are raising children that are poorly educated in morals and responsibility. Why? Because we took God out of the equation long ago.

I'm outraged, and it is most definitely the time to address the epidemic of shootings in our country. No responsible gun owner should want anything less then stricter controls on who has access to guns. We also need to address mental health and drug violence. It's time to stop pussyfooting around these issues that are taking our children from us.

As a matter of fact they pretty much were. It was a grade school and I believe most of the victims were between 6 and 13 or something like that. It happened a couple of years ago or so. RESPONSIBLE gun owners keep their weapons secured so that disturbed ass wipes like this kid can't access them. This kids mom f'd up and she and 28 others paid the ultimate price. Stricter gun laws would not have prevented this tragedy as his mom legally owned the guns. She just didn't properly secure them, and you cannot legislate personal behavior, and that's what this all boils down to. Who's to say that maybe 2 years from now the chemical imbalance or very small tumor that's in your brain or mine won't all of a sudden manifest itself and cause you or me to go off the deep end as this kid did. All of the legislation or open dialogues and discussions in the world will never prevent things like this.

To note: No-one died in the slashing of the Chinese kids. The Newtown children were picked off by bullets rapidly fired from GUNS. Shooter didn't have to stop to reload. And you don't think that's a problem?? Good Lord!

We need to address your fears, and my fears, and come up with some solutions to the gun violence in our country. No-one is talking about taking away guns from responsible gun owners. If you're hearing that, some one, or some group is trying to incite you. The wise thing for gun owners to do is to have rational dialogue about how we can prevent losing our children to gun violence. Your image needs to be elevated, and quoting the same BS talking points isn't helping your case. Doing nothing is no longer acceptable.

This is a tragedy and I am heartbroken for the families of Newtown.

                                Curtass, that's the problem: Responsible.

Having a gun may be a constitutional right (taken out of context in modern America), but there's absolutely no need for there to be semi-automatic weapons available to the citizenry.

There absolutely needs to be strict regulations or some prohibitions. Hell, there are limits to another constitutional right (voting), there's no reason an absolute ban on the potentially most horrific, war-centric guns from anyone in the US outside of active-duty police or those in the active military.

United We Stand -- and many others -- say we must do something to stop these tragic massacres. I agree. However, most sane people agree that gun control won't do it. If someone wants to kill a bunch of people, adults or children, they will find a way. And if we take the guns away from the honest citizens, then yes, only outlaws will have guns because they sure aren't going to turn them in.

So the question remains -- what can be done? Personally, I can't think of anything. I would love to hear from others of suggestions of possible actions we can take as a society and as a nation to reduce the occurrence of tragedies such as today's. Please? Anyone??

Yes they were and does it make you wonder what would have been the outcome if even one or two of the teachers in this school were carrying a 9mm and they has been trained on how to use it. You can never take the guns away from the criminals or those who are intent on killing, but if prepared, you could at least stop some of it. And yes you would be putting yourselves at risk, but what is the alternative, cower in the corner trying as best you can to protect the children and being murdered anyway, or waiting for them to come for you and greetng them with your weapon. I choose the latter. I will say it again and again, no one, no one can stop a person who is intent on killing someone unless it is known that it is going to happen before hand, not the cops, and not you. On the news a few days ago, did you see the video of the murderer waiting for his victim on the sidewalk, and when he went past, the killer shot the man in the head, if he had had a knife he would have stuck him in the back, if he had had a machete he would have hacked him to death, if had waited until he crossed the street and ran over him with his car over and over, this killer was going to commir murder, nothing could be done about it. If a person really wants to kill a lot of innocent children he can run them down with a car, don't you see where I am going with this. In all of the examples a citizen who is armed and trained to use a weapon is the only way these events could have been stopped and even then in most cases they would have only possibly more carnage after the fact. God help us.

Let's think for a second though, are "stricter" gun laws going to prevent shootings....NO! People who own guns legally are not the ones going out on horrific shooting sprees, it's those who find or come in contact with guns illegally that pose the greatest threat! Wake up! Taking from the innocent will not stop illegal activity!

Guns were stolen from the licensed owner not legal at all. Nothing about this tragedy was legal or ok with the law the NRA or anyone with any sense. These posts are hysterical venting not constructive discussion. The issue is too emotional to discuss intellegently at this time. We are at war, we have met the enemy and he is us. Not the constitution, not the NRA,not even guns but US.

                                      From Center for American Progess

Between 2009 and 2011, states cumulatively cut more than $1.8 billion from their budgets for mental health services, according to a report released in 2011 by the National Alliance on Mental Illness. At least two-thirds of states significantly slashed spending for services for children and adults living with mental illness.

To be sure, a person with mental illness is not de facto a violent person. Nor are they likely to cause human carnage by embarking on a shooting rampage. But spree killers share a number of traits, and one of them is being troubled. In the aftermath of one of the most infamous incidents of spree killing—the Columbine High School rampage in 1999—the Secret Service’s National Threat Assessment Center examined 37 school attacks involving 41 student assailants from 1974 and 2000. They found a disturbing mix of mental illness and inaction:

                                      • 93 percent of assailants exhibited behavior that caused a school official, parent, or law enforcement officer to be concerned before the attack.
                                      • 81 percent of assailants let at least one person know that they were thinking of or planning an attack.
                                      • 78 percent of the assailants “exhibited a history of suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts.”
                                      • 66 percent of attackers were known to be real threats by at least one person; in nearly every case, the person who knew this was a peer, friend, or sibling.
                                      • 34 percent of the assailants had a mental health evaluation prior to the attack.
                                      • 17 percent of the assailants “had been diagnosed with mental health or behavior disorder prior to the attack.”

Failing to appropriately treat and care for mentally ill Americans, especially young adults, puts us all at risk. Federal efforts to stem the state-level cuts and ensure sufficient Medicaid funds for behavioral health treatment must be considered a basic public-safety investment. Yet the National Alliance for Mental Illness finds that, “The magnitude of these cuts in a number of states is staggering. California cut $587.4 million during this period, New York $132 million and Illinois $113.7 million.” To make matters worse the current House Republican budget for 2013 proposes to further reduce federal funding for mental health treatment.

Don't forget the cost of prescription medicine. Some families have a hard enough time paying for their mortgage and can't afford to get the medicine their child needs. Oh I'm sorry you make too much to get help. Sadly, I know a child at our school that is suffering because the parent can't afford the $250 a month extra for needed medicine. I'm sure there are plenty more..

No one is talking about "taking from the innocent"! We're talking about making gun ownership a privilege that someone would have to qualify for. If you're sane, stable, and can demonstrate appropriate safety with a firearm, you should have NOTHING to worry about.

I agree UWS. Are we going to lay the bodies of these children at the altar of the NRA, along with all the other innocent victims of crazed gun owners? Don't forget the 9-year-old girl who died when Gabrielle Giffords was shot.

The hypocrisy of the NRA makes me sick. They chant their mantra: "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." But they lobby against the establishment of a national register of known mentally unstable people, against background checks at gun fairs, against ALL laws that would help to prevent those same crazy people from getting their hands on guns.

EVIL is just that, EVIL. All the laws in the world will not stop tragedies like this from happening. If the sick people that commit crimes like this aren't able to get their hands on guns, they would just plow their car into a bus stop or some other equally disturbing act.

If the teachers or other adults in this school were able to carry a weapon, maybe they could have reacted and stopped this sicko before he added up so many victims. The problem is with our court system. The criminals have more rights than the victims. We need to bring back public executions for people like this (at least for the cowards that don't kill themselves). If more people saw the penalty for such actions, fewer would commit such acts.

GOD BLESS the victims and I truely hope this individual is ROTTING in HELL!

no matter what happens in this life ... God has greater plans then we understand. After today's turn of events i must say that my heart grieves and is very sad. my feelings are like this sadly, A man went into a school where his mother taught innocent little children in a kindergarten room, He shot his mom and some of those kids if not all of them, He then in turn kept on the rampage because he was not satisfied i guess, before he turned the gun on himself. ( In ALL of this i do not see anything but the Devils handiwork happening, but then i pause for a moment and consider this ... No one is safe even if they think they are ... there are still HUNDREDS of victims left here to deal with this senseless moment in time.) This is where i BELIEVE God is right now. He is with those children who witnessed this, He is with their parents comforting them,He is with the parents of the children who did not make it out of that school. BUT most of all He is in control and He is welcoming home His children who shared our world for only a brief moment in time. He is also with the children of the staff at the school who were slain today, and their spouses and families. I feel that in this is a lesson on compassion and love and understanding.

He's going to take care of it.I'm not trying to preach to anyone on here but if people would just study more into God's word, the bible, it's not a mystery. all the answers are right there.

                                            Your God is immoral.

He is omnipotent and omniscient, right? So He knew this was going to happen and could have done something about it, but chose not to.

Stop apologizing for the horrible monster who lives in The Bible.

BUT most of all He is in control and He is welcoming home His children who shared our world for only a brief moment in time."

You may believe it, but just believing something does not make it true. You are asserting the existence of an interventionist entity. Something that acts in the world, "comforting, ...in control..." etc. Such an entity which could have stopped this and didn't is EVIL. Arguments about free will fall away in this case, since something which has to be given is not actually free.

Could Yahweh have acted but didn't ? :EVIL. Couldn't act ? Why worship something so impotent ?

The simplest answer is that there are no gods, just us, and WE have to deal with mental illness, and gun control ourselves, to protect our children, because any deities which do exist are obviously not interested in human well being or are incompetent at creating well balanced humans.

I'm sorry to be so forceful, but it's time to realise that the nonsense you have been taught as a child about a superbeing which looks after you is false, and is clearly not delivering on its claims.

Mind you, remember Yahweh did arrange for the torturing to death of his own child, and loves burnt meat and blood, so he does have a reputation to keep up.

yes they were defenseless elementary children. there are sick people everywhere so it can happen anywhere, sadly. I don't understand why people are arguing on here when the main focus should be concern over the families that just saw their children and also mothers/mates(teachers) this morning and now tonight grieving their death!it is very tragic and traumatic.I also don't understand why people are making foolish comments, quick to blame God. ; He gives each one freedom and opportunities to choose between good and bad, right and wrong. There are 7 things that are absolutely detestable to Him which includes "hands shedding innocent blood".-(book of Proverbs 6:16,17)If you believe in God, then you must believe also in evil, the devil. He is to blame and also man himself.

So he gave that to those 20 little kids? They got to choose? Sorry, I hardly think questioning is "foolish".

I certainly hope that faith brings comfort. This is a horrible tragedy ... as a country we need to come together and help. However calling people who question it "foolish" does not help.

Ironically, this is the same valid argument to have against what aborting a fetus is all about.

Kynetick, "respect" isn't the right word. Free will is what makes mankind good or evil. There are consequences to those men who choose wrong and therefore the onus is on them when their bad wills cause the deaths of others. Man is the reason for bad in this world, not God.

Teaching people how to communicate with each other, with respect and honesty and positive manner, from within a family to extended family/relatives and friends/neighbors, accepting diversity in regardless of spirituality, cultures, languages, genders, and races.

Bereavement process is continually to be involved, and a support group, small group and follow-up, may be another means for the healing . . .

May God the Father, Lord Jesus Christ be with those who have lost someone, either a family member or a friend, and may thy strength be with them during this tough time, which during this tough time may thy Holy Spirit be with them all, for healing the loss, providing comfort to those in distress, and for giving them guidance, Lord Jesus Christ, ABBA Father God. In the name of Jesus Christ, thy name we call upon to protect us, Amen.

For all those suffering in Newtown, Connecticut, please accept my deepest sympathy and genuine despair over the senseless tragedy that has, yet once again, devastated another (your) community.

It appears that all people in the United States today are agonizing with you. I, for one, have not experienced the profound loss as you have, and yet, there is not one day that goes by, when I cannot recall having not been affected by these astrocious acts of senseless slaughter.

Since August, 1966 (Charles Whitman), there have been repeated predatory attacks on innocent people. I cannot answer for you why these things happen. I cannot offer to you any hope that these monstrous deeds will ever be stopped. I know not what cause(s) that can be identified. Sadly, I personally cannot journey there to be of any comfort or support to you. Which leaves me with only words, and any words in an attempt to explain this merciless terror, I just do not possess.

Any deficiency in vocabulary may frustrate many tearful people trying to reach out to you, on this day.

For most of us, the shock and agony of today's events will diminish with the passing of time. The hardest reality to accept is that for you beloved people, the evil committed against you today will linger on indefinitely. Therefore, I wholeheartedly encourage you that whatever manner of recovery you choose to pursue, please do so with untiring diligence, and be ever so hopeful in your quest.

May the passing of time heal the scars of today within you, and secure within your memory, the beauty of your lost loved ones forevermore.

Certainly since the 1960s, it's pretty obvious that man has destroyed God. Man is his own savior (logic, technology and ecumenical logic), which is what continues to cause the world to spiral downhill.

Nobody can destroy God. I have seen very decent Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Buddhists, and agnostics all get together as one family under the canopy of Heaven during times of tragedy.

Don't get upset at those that either deny God, those that have a different faith, and those good people of no particular faith that honestly have doubts as to all religion? Likewise, do hateful bible thumpers or pedophile priests speak for Jesus and his mother? I don't think so.

It was a terrible thing that happened today. I am with a most heavy heart.

The belief in god, however...now that's a good place to start.

The most important thing to remember in all this is that though we are angry and sad it is because we are afraid that these unbearable losses are unavoidable. But these tragedies will not stop. Unfortunately, this is a truth we need to accept as a society. If not we may allow ourselves to become apathetic to the extreme of a nihilistic indifference or on the other hand voluntarily adopt a societal police state, lending our personal responsibility and social accountability to an interminable authority.

Yet we all know that no law can prevent seriously disturbed individuals from taking the ultimate right from others, their right to live. There will always be those who along the way are either taught, intentionally or not, and otherwise learn that they can extend their rights to the effect of violating other's rights in their pursuits, with the ends justifying the means.

What can we do? We can pay more attention to our fellow citizens, neighbors, family members and selves with gestures and words that show we appreciate life and hope to contribute to each other's happiness. We can alert those that are willing and able to approach the people we believe to be disturbed by going to pastors / ministers / priests, social workers / counselors / therapists / psychologists, police / firefighters / ems personnel, teachers / school administrators, calling crisis hotlines or other creative means to alert someone with the means to help.

Maybe there is a point when these individuals - who feel slighted enough to target and stereotype those perceived to be their aggressors, worthy of death, and plot vengeance against them - can be brought back from the brink of their madness. The return on the emotional investment with these individuals may pay off simply by observing these tragedies occurring less frequently.

Nevertheless, there is no measure of action that will suspend the grief that is inevitable from these events. I wish my heart could ease the suffering of these families whose children are not home as my mind strains for resolution, but it cannot. Neither words or ideas can heal their heart's scars.

It won't take the pain away from the families or bring the kids back so what are you all praying for? This isn't devine will or a mystery. It's was a sick human being. If there ever was a time for Gd or JC to show a sign it's now. A clear obvious sign not a face on a cracker or toast or in a bowl of soup. There hasn't been a true vision for over a few thousand years or more. If there ever was one. Let's face it, we are all we have and that's nothing to brag about. Even Mother Theresa had her doubts and felt the absence of a divine being. If we all prayed together, several million of us, do you think he would show us a sign? Can he deny so many of his followers? What's wrong with asking if he loves us? One little favor please? No we are all we have and we are failing.

                                                                    1. You begrudge giving one dollar to feed hungry children and their families.

                                                                    2. You begrudge giving one dollar to house the homeless children and their families.

                                                                    4. You begrudge giving one dollar to provide medical care to poor children and their families.

                                                                    5. You despise looking at homeless children and their families.

                                                                    6. You spend billions on your pets each years and deny poor children of food, clothing, housing, healthcare and love.

                                                                    7. You spend millions on commercials showing abused pets with beautiful songs about BEING IN THE ARMS OF ANGLES while a massacre of children is going on but you won't spend a penny on a commercial showing how poor children in this country are starving, abused, homeless, uneducated and swept under the rug.

                                                                    8. You fight over stupid political crap that doesn’t mean a damn thing in the long run and show them that hate is a good thing as long as it is against them and not us.

                                                                    9. You fight over the right of a fetus but allow the ones that live a life of sorrow, filth, abuse, neglect and the opportunity to grow into the monsters that murder.

                                                                    10. You allow filth to be piped into your living room, computer, laptop ,video games, smart phone that allow children to practice play killing until they are capable of doing the real thing.

                                                                    11. You allow our Country to go into WAR after WAR to kill millions and show it daily on Television like a badge of honor. You parade murders through the streets as Hero’s.

                                                                    12. You, yes each and every one of you pulled the trigger today – YOU ARE THE EVIL BEING TALKED ABOUT!

                                                                    13. You, for allowing the Corporation of Murderers - THE NRA to have control.

                                                                    • 1 vote

I'm not saying that abusing animals is ok, but when children are starving and being abused every day, how can anyone worry about some mutt being mis-treated? Let's start at least giving all the children on this planet a chance at a decent life before we worry about some varmint.

I can agree with much of what the Rev said, but I quibble with a couple of them. Here's one:

Video games do not teach people how to kill.

If you've ever looked at the average controller for the average video game...well, when you find the A, B, C, and D buttons on a rifle, or explain how moving that controller knob in a circle translates into actually firing a gun, get back to me.

Video games, yes, the violent ones, actually reduce violent crime. Don't believe me; go look at the stats. Pretend killing innocent pixels relieves stress.

Video games aren't magic tools that turn healthy, empathetic kids into killing machines. You want a magic pill, an easy solution, so you go for things like "take away their games!" It won't help. It might, in fact, hurt.

Give it some thought...if you can manage critical thought...

Chanting about how these children are all in "heaven" may make us feel a little better, but it does absolutely nothing to address the problem. In fact, it trivializes what happened here. These teachers and children are NOT floating around in lala land basking in the eternal bliss of "god's love." They lost the only life they will ever know.
