Hillary Clinton recovering after fainting, suffering a concussion

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reportedly fainted from being dehydrated and suffered an apparent concussion in the incident. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Updated at 6:45 p.m. ET: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton fainted days ago and suffered a concussion after becoming dehydrated because of a stomach virus, the State Department said Saturday.

"She has been recovering at home and will continue to be monitored regularly by her doctors. At their recommendation, she will continue to work from home next week, staying in regular contact with Department and other officials," the State Department said in a statement.

State Department officials said Clinton, 65, fainted earlier this week, although they would not specify when the incident occurred.

Saturday evening, the State Department issued a statement from Dr. Lisa Bardack of Mount Kisco Medical Group and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi of George Washington University:

"Secretary Clinton developed a stomach virus, leading to extreme dehydration, and subsequently fainted.   Over the course of this week we evaluated her and ultimately determined she had also sustained a concussion.  We recommended that the Secretary continue to rest and avoid any strenuous activity, and strongly advised her to cancel all work events for the coming week.  We will continue to monitor her progress as she makes a full recovery."

NBC’s chief medical editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman said Clinton’s exhausting schedule could have made her susceptible to fainting. Clinton is known for her grueling travel schedule and has earned the distinction of being the secretary of state who has traveled the most.

“If a patient has been logging millions of miles a year and is tired and not eating or drinking the right things in a couple of days, a shift in blood volume can cause fainting,” Snyderman said.

This isn’t the first time Clinton passed out after having a stomach bug. As a U.S. senator representing New York, Clinton fainted in 2005 during a speech in Buffalo after complaining of a stomach virus.

A history of fainting could indicate underlying heart problems, Snyderman said, specifically “that the heart is not pumping correctly.”

“Heart valve or thyroid issues can be more common in older women,” Snyderman explained. “The standard protocol would be to have a cardiac workout to make sure her heart rhythm and heart valves are normal. You worry about the heart not beating correctly. That’s a very simple thing to check.”

She said that given Clinton’s past fainting episode, her doctors would likely put her through a cardiac stress test.

The concussion will have doctors “watching her like a hawk,” Snyderman said, particularly if Clinton hit the side of her head. If Clinton hit the back of her head, her brain would be better protected, she said.

Clinton canceled a trip to Morocco earlier in the week because she wasn't feeling well. She was scheduled to be in Morocco to officially recognize the Syrian rebels who have been engaged for nearly two years in an armed battle against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton came down with a stomach bug earlier this week and fainted, suffering a concussion. Here she is pictured speaking during a news conference at Stormont Castle in Belfast, in Northern Ireland, on Dec. 7.

Due to her health, Clinton will no longer testify at a House Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday on the attack on a U.S. mission in Libya.

"I am sorry to learn of Secretary Clinton's ill health and I wish her a quick and full recovery. It is, however, unfortunate that Secretary Clinton is unable to testify next week before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on the investigation into the terrorist attack that killed four Americans and left others injured," committee chairwoman Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., said in a statement.

Deputy Secretary William Burns and Deputy Secretary Thomas Nides will provide testimony in Clinton's absence.

"Although I respect Bill and Tom, we still don't have information from the Obama administration on what went so tragically wrong in Benghazi that resulted in the deaths of four patriotic Americans," Ros-Lehtinen said. "We have been combing through classified and unclassified documents and have tough questions about State Department threat assessments and decision-making on Benghazi. This requires a public appearance by the secretary of state herself. Other cabinet secretaries involved should also be held publicly accountable."

@ Mike,

I'm guessing you wouldn't have voted for her anyway, likely being a biased Republican and all. I mean only a Republican would put someone who fainted down just because they are a Democrat. That could be a serious health issue for her, and quacks like you are rambling about Benghazi. I'm not a Democrat, but I find people like you to be disgusting.

"She has been recovering at home and will continue to be monitored regularly by her doctors."

Meanwhile, the rest of America has one doctor (note: singular, not plural) and they're expected to be back at work without any time to recover.

And I'm with Mike on this. You silly bastards do everything you can to smokescreen real issues, real scandals, and then bitch about it when a Republican gets elected. Show some actual intellect and less blind fool; you're not going to get a special trophy for mindlessly backing a party and letting heinous crap slide. That goes for you Republicans too; stop being such pansies and actually stand up for your beliefs, not your Boehner.

There, a Libertarian also said something. Shut your pie hole you deluded loons.

Mike seriously is that all you've got?! You might need to come up with some new material. I'd be interested to see your work schedule , I'm sure it would be paltry compared to the "grueling schedule" Hillary does everyday. She is all over the World at a moment's notice, in some very dangerous nations. No wonder she has a virus and so would you if you were in her shoes, and guess what? YOU aren't the Secretary of State and YOU also don't speak for all Americans. Hey Mike ,feeling just a little bit threatened that a woman can do a very tough job? Must be a Republican. Hillary cares about her country and does the best job she can possibly do, more than can be said for your comments. Either way, here's hoping she recovers and comes back swingin just like the intelligent, savvy, tough gal we all know. And , yes I'll be rooting for her in 2016!

Mike and a few others are prefect examples of what is wrong in this country.

When Bush 1 took ill recently I wished him a speedy recovery (Look it up on Newsvine) even though I did not support his stances on many issues. I think he was not a deeply flawed individual and worked hard without all the hate.

Hillary has done the same, she has been a highly successful servant in foreign affairs, though attacked constantly with silly personal attacks. But any decent American knows she has been tireless and should thank her for her work, even if they don't agree with all of what she has worked hard on.

Partisan hacks have no place in a hospital room or bedside on our elected and appointed public officials. A simple get well and thanks will do.

How silly of me to think a rich guy like you wouldn't have more than 1 doctor, which was actually the entire point of that. Nice catch on the subtlety, Richy Rich. Get rational, Mike, and get over your obvious bias because it clearly stands in the way of clear thinking. Secretary of State Clinton fainted because she was working through her illness. In other words, Mike, she put her job ahead of her own health.

But leave it to people like you to accuse anyone you don't like of some devious agenda. We already know your agenda, and it stinks!

Mister J

Congratulations, J. You jumped on Mike's bandwagon and it turned out to be a garbage truck. You people are so caught up in your own bias, prejudice and hate that you cannot possibly admit that anything done by your enemies is acceptable. Okay, all of you who don’t have the common sense to evaluate each issue as they arise and only figure out a way to attack the conservative folks on this site ought step back and reevaluate how hypocritical you are. If this was a republican that was suppose to be testifying on a major issue you would be saying the same thing the conservatives are. If you dispute that you are a bigger liar than I already think most of you are. In your mind any democrat could commit the biggest atrocity on the planet and you would not only support it but you would find a way to blame Bush. Take some of your own advise, grow up and take responsibility for your actions.

IF the Secretary of State is sick I hope she recovers soon but in the same breath I hope she agrees to testify to clear her name. In my mind she is looking for a way to avoid testifying. I think she is mart enough not to lie and that may prove to be a career-ending proposition. That is one of the reasons I think they sent Susan Rice out to do the lying for them. If she does lie and gets caught the outcome wouldn’t be much better. For all of you that have already proclaimed her next President you should slow down a bit. Obama hasn’t yet been sworn in for his second term. Wait until Obama care is implemented and the economy goes to hell in a hand basket because neither the dems or republicans can agree on limited tax increases and to stop the insane spending. I doubt that the American public will want anything that resembles the current supposed leadership.

I saw a tabloid in the supermarket the other day that ran an article about how the Clintons are having problems with Obama. It claimed that Bill Clinton is very ill and almost killed himself campaigning for Obama. Obama then snubbed the Clintons after he won, treating them badly. I have not seen any other news anywhere else on this except this one tabloid. I usually regard tabloid stories with a grain of salt. Is there truth to it?

In any event, I still want her to testify about Benghazi even if they call her later when she is better because I think if she were to run for president again, that incident needs to be explained by her so that it is not an issue that dogs her in 2016. She unfortunately repeated that stupid story about it being a movie that caused the attack, and I know she is not that stupid. I want her to explain why she did. In 2016, there will be more pressing issues than what will be a four year old one. If the Republicans act as bad as they are now, she should win in a walk.

Lots of comments about Hillary in 2016. I think that ship sailed in 2008. I don't see a 69 year old being elected. If she won, she'd be the 2nd oldest ever elected.

In today's media circus, unfortunately the camera counts and she will look that much older in 4 years.

Wow how stupid to be thinking that ms. clinton is the best bet for prez in 2016. Unbelievable people think that we should already put her in office instead of seeing who is best for the country in getting back to what this country should was and should be.

@ mike, could not stated it better. When a party does not believe in God and his laws bad, things will happen. Who is she going to pray too now. Karma is a bitch. It's a dame shame for those 4 dead American's who their leaders did not stand by them. I don't feel sorry for Hillary at all. She will live, because she is not wanted in Heaven. She and Obama have to live with their lies in Hell. Can not ask forgiveness if you don't believe, so live with your own laws in Hell of the USA. But it's not too late to Change. For all who warship Obama, you better go warship something else.

This is not the first time Hillary has conveniently been unable to testify about Benghazi. For those who have forgotten, Hillary and her buddy Leon Panetta went to a wine-tasting in Australia around November 14 - 15 so as to be, again, conveniently, unavailable to testify.

That there are people who think Benghazi is a "non-issue" (#1.9) is simply terrifying on so many levels.

Actually...

It's us "GOP loonies" who have all the money and pay for everything...

And we're leaving the country in droves, four times as many this year as last, and closing businesses by the score because many of us who don't have to work for a living are tired of being penalized by draconian tax laws for employing people...

And you'll soon run out of other peoples money to take...

And have to rely on yourselves and your own resources...

Of which you have but little...

So who's the loony?

Postpone the hearing then, she must answer the many questions regarding her and Susan Rice's response to the attack on our Libyan Embassy which resulted in 4 Americans being brutally murdered while we DID NOTHING to help!

Aren't the republicans suppose to be working on the fiscal cliff? It would seem to me that this witch hunt could wait until they actually complete the work on the middle class tax cuts. So....is it possible her stomach virus was actually something the republicans fed her to postpone their investigation so they don't look as bad when we go over the cliff? Nah, their not smart enough to realize that holding a witch hunt when they have a week left to fix the cliff could be the end of their existence.

I remember reading an article just the other day from the New England Journal of Medicine warning of the dangers of concussions brought on by stomach viruses. But that article was contradicted by one from MAD Magazine that indicated any ailment liberals would buy was acceptable to avoid telling the truth on Benghazi. It is just so hard to ascertain the truth these days. Then there was an article in the Salem Times which suggested liberals with either use race, Bush, or witch hunt to avoid facing reality 98.9% of the time. Now that one couldn't possibly be true.

She and Bill are a completely experienced and capable foreign and domestic team with decades of relationship throughout the world.. you think a Jeb Bush is gonna win against that? no way... that's delusional... 70% of the GOPers I know will vote for her because they can't see a reasonable GOP choice

either the GOP becomes a resonable opposition party and figures out a new tactic to capture the diverse center, and nobody sees how they are going to do that because they have to go so far right to get nominated.... or there will be at least 16 years of Dem presidents

The hatred from the right is even worse than the hatred with some of the same sort of patter from the Democratic supporters. A S.o.S. is obviously overworked and the so called right wing creatures see nothing but a conspiracy from the Government. I can see a disgust with some of the policies from our government officials, both Republican and Democrats but I think this unthinking hatred for everything that comes from officials that these vile persons consider should not be there is unhealthy. It appears to me that many from the far right are not Rep./T.P. but truly anarchists, and if you don't know what anarchists means then I think that you people should find someone in your group who might have enough knowledge to explain to you what I mean.

The haters want everybody to forget that many children and teachers died in Connecticut. Why talk about guns in America when we can talk about the death of a diplomat (who knew that Benghazi was a dangerous assignment)? Why face our own nation's violence with honesty? Do we need to arm kindergarteners with automatic assault weapons, just in case? - because the only deterrent against violence that is advocated by the conservatives is more gun violence. This is the question, not Benghazi, where four adults that had volunteered to go into a theater of war were killed.

As to Benghazi: Should the President ask for troops to protect against terrorist attacks in foreign countries, when sending more troops would be looked at as an act of war? If it is necessary, then we do send troops, and this President is slowly winding down the involvement in Bush's wars. But do we want more war fronts for our American soldiers to die in?

Meanwhile, those who busy themselves with this "hearing" on Benghazi, right now, are avoiding taxing the rich. They would drive this country, especially the military, over the "fiscal cliff," because they want to interrogate somebody who fell because they were dehydrated. Sure, she will be able to testify in a week or two, and that is fine. But meanwhile, TABLE the discussion on Benghazi until she is well, and Congress, for once, please, DO YOUR JOBS.

There is a man who helped the United States rotting in a Pakistani prison because Obama felt spiking the football was more important for the political gain then any concern for whom might be made to suffer. But when the news might not show the Obama administration in the best of light, no tactic which can keep the American people from learning the truth is not warranted. A concussion from a stomach virus is about as pathetic an excuse as there ever was, and all so Hillary doesn't have to testify on Benghazi. So when this sort of event repeats itself, we will know why, the country was not allowed to learn from its mistakes because no one in the Obama administration was willing to stand up and tell the truth.

News flash Benghazi isn't a conspiracy. 5 nations errupted in violence after the anti-muslim video and it's not too far of a strech to think Benghazi was any different than the others at the time.

I agree, she got old fast in just a mere 4 years. Had I known this would have killed her, I would have asked her to be given the position long ago.

Think of it, Secretary of State has little to do with corrupting our government from within with all those liberal man-hating politics that Hillary always pushed. Now, other governments have to put up with the witch instead.

                Heil Hillary!

I don;t predict Hillary will run in 2016, but I've been wrong many times before. If she does, she'll still be younger than Reagan when he took office, or Bob Dole when he ran.

Omg if Americans would just get over the 2nd Amendment and we would end civilian gun ownership, things like this would not happen. Guns are so st00pid.

Mike...what we need to get over is all the Amendments...then things would be so much better. But what does any of that have to do with Hillary Clinton manufacturing a reason to avoid testifying before Congress?

Ok, I answered that for you, but this news release isn't about guns it's about one of our leaders having fisical problems, my guess from a very high stress job.

That's assuming that Bush knowingly and willfully denied extra defenses to be sent to that Embassy. Oh, you mean the one in 2001. I get confused ever since your president got called out on it and you guys somehow deflected it back to 2001 when it was clearly about 2012 Romney was speaking about.

And the WTC wasn't an Embassy that was stormed by angry terrorist cell members performing a military action. It was a civilian building that was rammed by 747s hijacked by 16 Arabic guys who were aided by 4 other guys of mixed nationality and Arabic names. Pretty big difference there. And you really had your facts straight, you would know that Dick Cheney is responsible for their deaths rather than Bush who was reading to school children, being kept in the dark about his own administration as usual. Dick ran that show - didn't you listen to Colin Powell?

Hillary is responsible not just for 4 Americans, but specifically the first Ambassador being killed since 1971. That's a major f-up, dude. Ambassadors are never supposed to die because they have only 2 guys protecting them against hundreds of people trying to kill them. The Al-Qaida message is clear - our foreign administrators don't have a freaking clue what they're doing and our leadership is made of fail.

and Joe, let's not forget "the other Rice" told GW a range of time this would be happening. So he could have ordered stepped up security. Not to mention that BEFORE the buildings came down, they were showing photos of 18 of the 19 hijackers on TV. Someone will have to really convince me GW did not know what was happening.

Get will soon Madam Secretary. Hillary 2016!

Some of you people are truly pathetic with your statements. Do YOU have any idea what encompasses service at the Ambassador level in HOSTILE environments? It is on the same level of our Soldiers fighting wars, you are there, and unfortunately, any amount of "security" will not save you, sooner or later.

You people want to put the blame on this President and anyone he appointed so bad, you forego your intelligence, you overlook what Ambassador Stevens had to say himself. A very intelligent man who knew damn good and well what Libya was all about. When you have fear in your heart, you do not put yourself in violent situations, like YOU would. Ambassador Stevens had no fear, he had compassion, and duty to his country.

                        Try having that J--1780316....

In a State Department video introducing Stevens as the new ambassador to Libya last May, Stevens says he "quickly grew to love this part of the world" during his time in the Peace Corps and since joining the Foreign Service "spent almost my entire career in the Middle East and Africa."

At his Senate confirmation hearing in March, Stevens said, "It will be an extraordinary honor to represent the United States during this historic period of transition in Libya."

"Ambassador Christopher Stevens was a conscientious, well-informed and engaging diplomat who served our country exceptionally well. Significantly, Stevens' heroic status stems from his exceptional good works on behalf of our country and the personal risks that he knowingly took when performing his duties.

The exceptional characteristics and works rendered by Ambassador Stevens, and the risks he took in service to our country, stand in stark contrast to the recent attempts to exploit the Ambassador's death for political purposes. For those who knew and admired Ambassador Stevens, these efforts are inappropriate and disheartening, even borderline offensive. The time has come for those who knew the Ambassador and understand his legacy to speak out and plea that these efforts stop.

The Ambassador was fully aware of these dangers and the risks assumed by any American in Libya. Precautions could be taken to reduce the risks, but there was no way they could be eliminated. One thing soon became evident to me: my profile in Libya was comparatively low and my exposure to the risk of danger was short term. On the other hand, the Ambassador's profile was about as high as it could be for any American in Libya. Moreover, his tenure in Libya, unlike mine, was for the long term. Despite the known risks, Ambassador Stevens liked being out among the people.

As I end my comments I have some suggestions for those who seek to exploit the Ambassador's death for political purposes. First of all they should heed the admonitions of Stevens' parents: the attempts to "place blame are unproductive" and the blatant attempts to exploit the Ambassador's death are "abhorrent." We all would be better off if we returned to the bygone ethic of past leaders who sought to unite our nation on issues of foreign policy, not divide it."

I have it from a good friend of mine who was there that the reason the Viet Nam war lasted so long is we had to dismantle nukes left over from the Korea conflict but it had to be done in secrecy. The nukes were in very bad deteriorating condition. But then I remember Nixon saying something like if a man can't make peace in 4 years, he has no business asking for another four years. Guessing he asked for four more but didn't quite make it. All this obstructionism is payback for Nixon.

For all of you bringing up Hillary Clinton as it relates to what happened to the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, I'm reposting this from #1.164 - Sun Nov 18, 2012 4:47 PM PST

                        ------------------------------

So the House GOP refused the White House's request for better funding for the security of our embassies and consulates in war-torn countries, because, in part -- as Mitch McConnell said, the Republican Party's number one priority was to make Obama a one-term President. Deny him and the Democrats, everything they can, even for things the right-wing agreed previously upon.

JASON CHAFFETZ (R-Utah) ADMITS HOUSE GOP CUT FUNDING FOR EMBASSY SECURITY: 'You Have To Prioritize Things'

                        Excerpts:

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) acknowledged on Wednesday that House Republicans had consciously voted to reduce the funds allocated to the State Department for embassy security since winning the majority in 2010.

On Wednesday morning, CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien asked the Utah Republican if he had "voted to cut the funding for embassy security."

"Absolutely," Chaffetz said. "Look we have to make priorities and choices in this country. We have…15,000 contractors in Iraq. We have more than 6,000 contractors, a private army there, for President Obama, in Baghdad. And we're talking about can we get two dozen or so people into Libya to help protect our forces. When you're in tough economic times, you have to make difficult choices. You have to prioritize things."

For the past two years, House Republicans have continued to deprioritize the security forces protecting State Department personnel around the world. In fiscal year 2011, lawmakers shaved $128 million off of the administration's request for embassy security funding. House Republicans drained off even more funds in fiscal year 2012 -- cutting back on the department's request by $331 million.

Consulate personnel stationed in Benghazi had allegedly expressed concerns over their safety in the months leading up to the Sept. 11 attacks that killed four Americans, including Amb. Chris Stevens.

Hilary is 65. She is a prime example why the age for retirement under Social Security should NOT be raised. She has the finest medical available that tax $$$ can buy. There are THOUSANDS of places to cut. What Congress and this administration do NOT understand is any $10.00 uneeded cut from a program IS a savings. Put the money back into Social Security that LBJ and Carter stole from the program that the PEOPLE paid into it.

At least folks, get some of the Presidents straight.

Cheney knew about Bin Laden: he met with him in Afghanistan during the Russian-Afghan conflict, and Tim Russert brought out video tape from that time in a Face the Nation interview with Cheney on Sept. 17, 2001. Cheney was working for Bush Sr. when he met personally with Bin Laden; that was before Clinton. Cheney knew exactly how dangerous OBL was, because he had used him against the Russians, but Cheney ignored all the reports of OBL ready to attack the U.S. in 2001.

As to Kennedy: he had tried to keep us out of Vietnam, not escalating the war that Eisenhower had started. Johnson escalated the war, but as "starsailing" said in post 5.16, Nixon nixed the peace plan, undermining it, and there is proof of that. As much as Johnson escalated the war, Nixon killed many more Americans than that; more than twice as many, and brought other countries into the war too.

History is not just written by the winners of conflicts.

I wish people would admit the deaths of Americans on American land caused by either terrorists or lone gunmen. Violence is not a deterrent unless you want to give automatic assault weapons to kindergarteners.

As long as nobody died I guess this is not a big deal. China is reporting an epidemic of slashing and stabbings. Violent people will commit violent acts by whatever means necessary. Guns didn't send the man in the school on his rampage, just as the knife didn't send the man in China on his rampage.

Very shortly after the Benghazi attack happened, Hillary came out and said it was her responsibility as Secretary of State. These people worked for her. I don't think she has much issue with testifying except maybe the issue of having to dance around saying anything about the ongoing CIA mission there. I am sure having to live with the loss of her people is far worse than having to put up with a Congressional inquiry and even so you can be sure she will testify even if it does get delayed. Frankly, I think her testimony will in fact do a nice job of putting some of ridiculous right winger in their place. They have more to fear from it than she does. This woman will not take crap from these politically motivated fakers. I dare them to push her, they will pay the price for it.

Anybody with just a little common sense should realize that the CIA presence there had a lot to do with what happened and also had a lot to do with may have appeared to be evasivenessabout giving out information. It was the CIAs official version that Susan Rice reported in her now infamous Sunday morning news shows debacle, that has now resulted in keeping a highly intelligent and effective person from becoming Secretary. You idiots looking for some excuse to string up the President are in fact doing some major damage to the country.

The only thing that would have changed the outcome of the Benghazi attack would have been not being there in the first place. However, if the State Department wasn't there, then there would have been no cover for the CIA. It should come as no surprise that State Department and diplomatic personnel have for many years been involved in CIA work, however the US has never officially acknowledged this nor can they. The Republicans know this and have been playing it knowing full well there are some things the Administration simply can't acknowledge, and because of that they will create an appearance of cover up and incompetency. All political nonsense while gambling with the country's security.

The only thing that comes out of these kinds of witch hunts is damaging the ability of the intelligence community to do their work. Now some of you might believe that there should be no secrets at all in government, but that is being naive. Unless we can have our intelligence community operating covertly, we might as well just save the money and then decide what to do based on what we see on Fox News. Sure , I wish I knew everything we are up to, but that is really just greed for information. However it doesn't take a genius to look at clues and draw some pretty reasonable conclusions. However, the more we publicly draw attention to these things, the more we end up revealing to our enemies who would attempt to use that intelligence to harm us.

The Republicans need to back off the political witch hunt, there is little for them to gain at this point. Sure we need to know how to prevent such things in the future, but the people that need to know that, already do know it. So we will end up with some public knowledge gained, (and some knowledge gained by our enemies), but it will still be to some degree a whitewash because we are not about to publicly admit that the Ambassador was in fact serving a dual purpose role also being a CIA operative.

Randog, since you are making up your own statistics, why not pick a number like 10 or 20 thousand per day. If you look at the CDC website, you'll find that automobile related fatalities outnumber gun related fatalities. And now that you know there are more than 30,000 car related deaths per year, can I assume you'll lead the charge to ban automobiles?

starsailing, isnt it funny how Clintons had the same info and backed Bushes decision 100% and how for a year before the war how they kept bashing Bush for not doing anything yet. Also how that dictator killed his own people with those weapons. And how could some of you people say that Bush could of stopped the world trade center attack and not ask why Clinton didnt stop the world trade center attack in the early 90's.

1newday 9.16: That is why, when Petraeus bowed out, I thought that the petty affair was just an excuse. He had been head of the CIA, and it was his responsibility. I was very confused when actual evidence of the affair was revealed, because I had assumed it was just a rumor set to give him an excuse to resign for incompetence. Of course, the conservatives don't blame the CIA because Petraeus is Republican. Somehow the conservatives have used this attack to try to prevent Pres. Obama from being re-elected, and to try to make Hilary Clinton look bad, and they have prevented a possible nomination for Secretary of State. The Ambassador who died is rolling in his grave. When a murder is committed, who benefits? Not the Obama administration, so we must look to the Republicans.

As everybody should recall: The '93 attack on the Trade Center was not expected because the F.B.I. was just beginning to evaluate serious terrorist threats. Bush Sr. (continued by Clinton) had reduced the number of military bases in the U.S., taking away ALL the major military bases around New York City. Ft. Dix Army base in N.J.: gone. Ft. Hamilton Navy base in Staten Island: gone; replaced by a small Coast Guard installation without the muscle to protect. Look at all the bases within a short distance of NYC at that time, and they were... gone. Notice that it took hours for a military "hospital ship" to arrive at NYC after the Trade Center collapse: they sent a military hospital ship, not a military fire-fighting ship or rescue craft because it was already too late; Bush Jr. instead expected the fire fighters and police of NYC to stand in for the military, serving as front lines of an international terrorist war on United States soil.

I have a clue because my husband worked in Ft. Hamilton before the Navy base was closed.

I am a Democrat, but I had serious reservations about both Bush Sr. and Clinton's decisions to take away those military bases. Bush Jr. did not try to reinstate the bases either. However, by 2001, Clinton had provided reports on the activities of Bin Laden, and expected those to be followed up by Bush Jr.; but those reports were ignored. That is very strange, because they already had hindsight about the need to protect the Trade Center, and experience of the F.B.I. infiltrating terrorist cells in the U.S., and also Cheney had worked with Bin Laden in the Russian-Afghan war (as shown in a video on Face the Nation Sept. 17, 2001 by Tim Russert). There was much stronger evidence that America was in danger in 2001 than we had known in 1993, but that evidence was not even passed along to channels such as military intelligence, the F.B.I., or others who might have intervened.

So, when somebody posts a simple, well, Clinton should have known in 1993; well, there wasn't the huge warning then. But what in the world was our Federal government doing in 2001? They were on vacation.

Statistics aren't working against me Randog, and when did the CDC become Rush Limbaugh or Fox News? You claim there are more than 109,500 gun deaths per year in the U.S., yet the CDC reports less than 1/3 of that.

Speaking of that pig Rush Limbaugh, I was listing to the local comedy channel (right wing talk radio station) Friday, and he told a sexist joke involving Hillary Clinton's health. So much for the intellectual head of the GOP - good luck in the next election. That guy knows as much about common courtesy as he does about the Chevy Volt - which is nothing.

                                  Elizabeth,

Well, I'm not so sure the Pretaeus thing was about the CIA involvement or responsibility.

The insider rumors were going on for some time. The story now is that it was just a very recent thing, but if you look at pictures and watch some old interviews with her, I'm pretty convinced he was doing her back in Afghanistan. If he wasn't, she sure wanted him to. It is in his best interests to not admit it went back that far because that would have been a violation of military code.

Not criminal as the head of the CIA, but clearly indicative of poor judgement. It's purely speculation, but imagine if they were together a bit pre-occupied when he got the call about the Benghazi attack? I'm not sure we will ever know exactly what transpired, but it seems pretty obvious that there was CIA action going on and they have as much as admitted that the "Annex" was a CIA outpost. But the fact is that even if they had a couple dozen Marines stationed there at the time, the outcome probably would have just been more US casualties. And you're right, there is no way Republicans are going to get down on Pretraeus. no political advantage in that.

The speculation about being able to stage some intervening mission is full of holes when you get down to the technical capability and it would have taken an immediate response to even get close to making it happen. Intel seemed to be pretty sketchy and even contradictory early on and within a short time after the initial attack, it looked like the attackers had retreated. So there would be some mixed messages.

It was a terribly unfortunate occurrence, but all these folks understand that they may indeed be putting themselves in dangerous positions. Similar things have happened before during other administrations and I don't recall there being a lynch mob for the President in those cases. This was all politically motivated. I watched the hearings with the State Department people. It was mainly about certain Congressmen giving speeches instead of asking questions and when someone tried to say something they didn't want to hear, they just got abusive and shut them down. It was a circus with the clowns sitting in the audience conducting the hearings.

Anyway, I don't think Hillary fears these clowns in the least bit and I believe she will not tolerate their games one bit. They know too, that if they try to shut her down, all she has to do is have a little mini press conference afterwards and she'll destroy them. The press will give her every opportunity to tell her story even if the Congressional witch hunt doesn't want to.

Anyone who doesn't realize that Hillary Clinton has been one of the best Secretaries of State in modern times, simply doesn't have a clue.

I don't want to sound sexist, but a strong willed woman has the potential to do this job far better than a man in may cases. The key is that she must deal with all countries and being a woman in a lot of cases gives her a disarming edge.

There should be little doubt that Hillary is 100% a loyal and high dedicated American. She is also on smart lady.

Hillary has definitely aged in this job because she has tirelessly dedicated herself to it. I hope she is soon feeling better. I can relate to sometimes pushing too hard when sick and when a person should be laying in bed recovering. I can't blame her for looking forward to getting some time off to rest and recover from four years of pretty much continuous work.

To you young "whipper snappers", be thankful you have had some intelligent, thoughtful elders running things, because you wouldn't be here without them. Hillary is the type of person who will use the ideas and new outlooks of younger up and coming staff and tailor them with the experience that only comes with time. Age wears on your body, but you can't get experience without aging. It is more about experience than it is about age. Some start getting the experience earlier than others but it is still about the passing of time. We would all like to be young forever, but as you age you discover that you wouldn't trade the experience for being young again. Of course you don't realize this until you get there.

Poor thing...virus getting the best of her is it? I'm a little surprised that the Secretary of State isn't receiving the best medical coverage and care. You and I get a stomach virus we usually take a little time off, rest up and deal with it on our own (you and me aren't as important as the Secretary of State). But, I have difficulty with the idea that the Secretary of State (she is in the Chain-of-Command of the United States of America) isn't getting better care and supervision. A painless little IV bolus would help with the dehydration, and careful monitoring by a physician and nurse would allow a tailored-made plan of medications and support measures that could keep the Secretary of State from collapsing and suffering a concussion. Somebody isn't doing their job watching out for her.

Yes, Harleyguyvet-President Hillary in 2016...time to see what an extremely motivated woman of her intelligence, law background and vast international experience will accomplish in bringing this lixd up world closer together, little by little anyway....hope springs eternal for all world citizens- alternatives: Work and plan using better strategies to achieve survival together or work in small prejudiced groups to annihilate civilization-ultimately ending civilization bit by bit, This is a civilizaional emergency. Oh the dark ages will return if good men and women do nothing.

Hillbilly won't run for prez in 16. She's already too ragged and worn out to be of value. Besides she knows that the media only wants young, fresh, clean and smart men (like obammy), not old, wrinkled, beshoveled dikes with fat azzes.

The hatred manifested here matches the hated manifested in Connecticut yesterday. Do all you Tea Party folks want to see a picture of the pain as she fell?

Congress would stay in session if the Republicans would stop walking out after a 2 day week. 2 weeks in a row they have done this , how is this helping the country? Seems like they are stalling to me.

Get well Hillary, we need you in 2016. I want to witness a woman President, before i die.

Most all of us do a job at the expense of our health, I for one think we have a bit to much patting on the back going on in Govt now, While I wish Mrs Clinton well I certainly do not feel she has done a well or an unwell job, She is simply doing her job, A job which she accepted and can resign from whenever she wants.

So if the docs think it might be heart valve, put the old broad on a treadmill and hold some twinkies in front of her. If she survives get her fat azz in front of congress to testify about her complicity in Bengazi. If her ticker conks out, then it was the valve.

Why cant it be enough to just say, "I hope she recovers" ?? Why is that so hard? Why cant you be hopeful for a fellow human being?
