Police in Oklahoma say they may have foiled a possible school shooting at a school after a student alerted authorities, leading to an arrest. TODAY's Jenna Wolfe reports.
Oklahoma police arrested a high school student on charges that he was plotting to carry out a shooting and bombing massacre at his school, the Tulsa World newspaper reported on Saturday.
Sammie Eaglebear Chavez, 18, was arrested at his home in Bartlesville, Okla., on Friday, the same day that a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.
Police alleged in an affidavit that Chavez tried to recruit other Bartlesville High School students to help him lure classmates into the school auditorium, where he planned to chain the doors shut and start shooting them, the newspaper said.
"He also told them that if the students assisting him did not do what they were supposed to do, he would not hesitate to kill them and/or himself," the newspaper quoted the police affidavit as saying.
Chavez told classmates that he would put bombs by the auditorium door and detonate them when police arrived, the affidavit said, according to the newspaper.
He was jailed on a charge of attempting or conspiring to perform an act of violence and his bond was set at $1 million.
Police said they could not comment on Saturday. Court records indicate a hearing is scheduled for Jan. 11.
An arrest warrant was issued on Thursday, a day after Chavez allegedly solicited classmates in the school cafeteria to help him carry out the plot. A student notified a school administrator, who called police.
The police affidavit said Chavez had used a school computer to research guns, pipe bombs and the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in which 12 students and a teacher were killed in Littleton, Colo. It also said he had told a teacher last week that he had bought a Colt .45 gun, though it was unclear whether he actually had one.

Now is the time to liquidate this fool, forever.
This kid's name is Sammie Eaglebear Chavez. Sounds like he might be Native American. Who but the Native Americans have the right to be furious with the Caucasians for stealing their land? He was planning on taking his fury out on the wrong people. He should start with Washington, D.C.
Taking their land my ass.
It would be a leap to think that his motive was political. What sort of political statement would it be to kill kids? It looks like in this case it was notoriety. He wanted to outdo all other shootings. Some people will settle for infamy in order to make the history books.
Moderators take note: The post above me appears to be spam and I also saw this same post on another Newsvine.
this is probably just one more copycat crimes.I am sure there will be more to come.
A threat is a threat, if they don't kill him, make sure he never gets out...
If anyone makes any threat of this nature, that should be the end of them walking the streets.
You make a threat, you better act on it because the punishment will be the same...
Terry, You wouldn't be here if it weren't for brute force and the mass murder and carnage of innocent people. Pick up a history book once in awhile. Your statement is beyond foolish.
Derrek:
We don't give a f**k where you buy anything...get your annoying post off of this site...and, by the way, go take an English class, you're only semi-literate.
The 1 million dollar bail will back fire one of these times when one of these people post it and then go right ahead and do what they planned. Why could anyone get out on any amount until at least this has been investigated to see if true? If he truly planned to do this he should be jailed and kept there.
@Terry, how dumb can you be....go learn something, pfft
Moozie, Practice what you preach, pack your and GTFO of this country before you condemn everyone else. Go ahead and set an example for all of us.
Idiot.
I am glad they are being pro-active in catching these children before they hurt others.
We have a boy in my sons class who by all assertions is disturbed. He is a bully, he talks to himself and laughs to himself in class, disrupting lecture. He is violent and causes lots of issues for the classroom. I just found out that he also has his own collection of rifles---he and his parents hunt a lot. I don't mind 11 year old boys that hunt; but when you mix an already troubled child with killing, gutting and skinning deer I think we are just asking for problems.
Here is the sickest part---both of the parents of this kid are teachers and they constantly look the other way with his behavior. They have three other "normal' boys to take care of and this fourth kid is out of control and they just ignore his behavior. The other parents have asked that this child be removed from the school due to his violent outbursts and the school refuses.
NOw I am more worried than ever about this kids behavior.
mozzie - Practice what you preach and learn to think for yourself instead of spouting whatever is considered politically correct this week. Europeans taking land from Native Americans is only one example out of hundreds where one group of people conquered another. It's been happening since man began to walk upright and branched out from the apes. It will continue to happen. If you want to feel guilty about it, then go find a good Native American family and give them your home.
@ kallie contact a lawyer and sue the school about that boy as soon as possible, to get him removed
I'm convinced this will happen again just by reading comments, school, movie theater, mall, wherever..We don't need terrorists..
Kallie: Call the FBI. Seriously.
Kallie
As other have noted, contact LAW ENFORCEMENT. Whether that is the State Police or FBI, make them aware of the situation. The school and local law enforcement might be too close to the situation to make a professional judgement.
HOWEVER... make sure you can document incidents and have the support of others before you proceed. Otherwise, it might get turned on you as the "instigator".
Also, check state law. If in fact the child "owns" those rifles, that might be a violation of law. While children CAN and do hunt, invariably that is under the direct supervision of an adult.
I'd say this jerk was living out another video game fantasy. He needs to be put away a long long time....
Here's my opinion, for what it's worth: These people are severely depressed. They're miserable and they want out of this world. Nothing about life gives them any pleasure. So they plan to end it all, but if THEY have to go they are going to take a few people with them because "misery loves company". I'm not convinced it's for notoriety, especially since they usually aren't alive to relish in it. They just want others to die along with them. And, after all, what's the big deal? Life on earth is HELL to these perpetrators. They probably assume it's that way to most people, so dying really isn't all that bad, is it?
Yankee, You have no mental problems but you are the perfect person to ask because you play these games. Let's say you are a person that has trouble with any numerous brain disorders. Would a violent video game put killing into another realm within these individuals that you yourself would never go? I am so serious. We as a society understand where the moral line is when we say a statement - and this is a rough statement, but - throwing babies against the wall is wrong. Would these types of violent games in an individual that is struggling to understand what is right and wrong, would this type of video game push them pass this moral line?
Plus, some of these games are played online with other people and is that connection that might cause an individual who is struggling with right or wrong, would that let them believe it would be ok to step across this line?
Davefromdanapoint and Scales:
Your comments are immature and you are out of your league. You won't be able to hold up your end of a discussion with me, so don't bother. And I certainly am not going to waste any time on you.
moozie,
You are pot that calls the kettle black and as far as wasting your time on us...you just did.
Have a good night loooooooooser...L
This is just the start. With the economy tanking for the lower income people, it's just going to get worse! Hate to see this happen to children, not right.
I hate for tragedies that happen to children too, but you are delirious. These incidents have nothing to do with lower income or the economy. These are issues that involve our failure to recognize and deal with mental illness and easy availability of guns.
Why do you guys call it "mental illness" when people act on vengeance? This is not something that can be "cured/diminished" by medicine or doctors; they are retaliating based on treatment from others. Stop lumping everything as "mental illness" just because you can't understand their psyche.
@Don97524
I'm sorry, but what? There is a possibility that these incidents very well have to do with poverty. And mental illness? I'm damn sure these people knew what they were doing; it wasn't something they couldn't control, so please. Don't pull out the mental illness card. Even IF it were a mental illness, mental illnesses don't just activated. Stress and aggravation are their catalysts. So excuse me if I say that your comment is incorrect when you say that lower income can't be a problem. Try living in a slum with insufficient funds leaving your physiological needs unsatisfied. I bet you'll do crazy @!$%# too, especially if you have a trace of "mental illness" in your genome.
polar
You are irrational. This is not a "normal" act of vengeance. This is an act of a mentally ill person who might not have committed this atrocity if he had received adequate mental health treatment. Unfortunately, mental illness is still underfunded in this country. Your statement that it is "not something that can be "cured/diminished" by medicine or doctors" is absolutely absurd. I do not, for your information, "lump" everything I don't understand into a mental illness category, but the reports clearly state that the shooter had a history of mental illness. When coupled with a mother who kept multiple (non-hunting) weapons in the house and took her mentally ill son with her to the shooting range we had a prescription for disaster.
Gosh
There is no indication that this crime or any similar crimes had the slightest thing to do with poverty. None. Poverty is clearly linked to some types of robbery and even domestic violence, but your belief that poverty leads to mass murder is ridiculous and is not supported by any evidence whatsoever. It is fairly obvious, however, that mental illness coupled with easy access to firearms are causational factors.
And I've read where the fragile minded are even more fragile at the holidays.
"lower income people?" All of the perps in these recent shootings have come from the middle or upper classes. The sandy hook killer was from what was described as a pretty afflluent area. Seems to me hard times are driving the "well raised ' kids to kill ,more than others are.
Are gang bangers mentally ill also, or is the diagnosis just for suburban murderers?
This has more to do with notoriety than anything else. People that want to go out with a bang will commit more and more outrageous attacks to be more famous than someone else. If they refused to release their names you'd do more to cut down on these types of crimes than anything else. Maybe then they'd simply go back to offing themselves. The fact he was researching the Columbine massacre meant he intended to do more.
The same thing is happening in China that is happening the the United States. Over in China somebody just killed 20 school children with a knife. A knife for crying out loud. That's real work. Killing somebody with a knife is hard work. Not in America. Over here the gun is the weapon of choice. No stress. No fuss. Just pull the trigger until the ammo runs out and then count the bodies.
At least the Chinese are honest about real reasons and true causes for these mass murders. The Chinese say that the reasons for these types of crimes is that the people cannot keep up with how fast their society is changing, and how quickly old ways are being put aside for new ways.
Same thing in America, but our government and media are a pack of corporate controlled thugs. Everything, even the weather, is politicized and profitized. The only difference between what is happening in America versus what is happening in China is that China is on her way up; the United States is on her way down.
American kids know the jobs are going away, along with Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Unemployment Insurance, Food Stamps, all forms of public assistance. Not only that but all public and private pensions are being robbed, plundered, stolen from, and "under-funded." And with the economy heading towards bankruptcy their future not only looks pretty bleak, it probably doesn't even exist anymore. Some people are not ready to start doing a lot of nothing.
Try adjusting to this new reality when education, unless it is at private schools and at the top Ivy League colleges and universities isn't worth the virtual paper its printed on.
So people here are going nuts. The people in China are going nuts. The nut jobs are the American media, who want to do away with guns where there are more than enough knives to do the job. Just ask the Chinese.
Er ... not quite. Yes, the incident happened. No, no one was killed. If you're going to try and use something as an example, you might just want to do your research a bit. So no, knives didn't exactly "do the job" in China that an assault rifle did here.
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/12/22-kids-slashed-in-china-elementary-school-knife-attack/
Newsflash, littleknownsecret. The economy has been tanking for years now. That is nothing new, but these shooting incidents seem to be occurring at an increasing rate.
scales
If you are going to blame these incidents on the economy maybe you should have a little better evidence than "it seems to me." Profilers NEVER blame the economy for this type of crime so it seems to me that you don't know what you are talking about. These crimes are always linked to the psychological makeup of the criminal. Always.
So, Don, This is an opinion site. People give opinions, some based on data, some on experience, some on feelings. We're grownups - we can handle that.
Profilers are not always right either. Most social researchers agree that poverty, hunger, lack of medical care, frustration, lack of self-esteem, poor cognitive skills, poor language and/or problem solving skills can have a negative effect on our ability to deal with conflict.
Chavez, the puto.
Instead of taking it out on the individual, why don't we look at the larger picture of the deplorable mental health services in this country. Liquidating "this fool" would only treat a symptom, not the problem. To take a quote out of context, "There's one born every minute."
Imagine if you will that we took 1% of our national defense budget, say the total amount a country like Italy spends on it's total national defense budget, and applied it to mental health on a national scale. We could treat the source of the issue without having to interfere with the right of every gun-toting "Constitutionalist" to have their own AR-15 or carry a 9mm into an ice-cream shop.
As a species, we have the means and can do better. We must if we are to survive ourselves.
Here's a blog post from a psychologist detailing exactly what you're talking about, that the state is willing to commit a million dollars to repair an indigent person after a suicide attempt, but almost nothing for the mental health services to prevent the suicide attempt in the first place:
Italy has a mere fraction of our GDP in comparison.
Apples and oranges. Get a better angle.
Sure it's always someone's fault except the nut with the gun. The mommy or daddy was mean or now a lack of mental health facilities. Rolls eyes. Most of these killers come from at least fairly affluent families that could treat them if they had a problem but in almost every case though they were known as loners no one ever thought they could do something like this. If you had a mental health clinic on every block few of these would be caught.
Adults, like children, being allowed to play (whether introvert or extrovert) and listen to one another will learn DIFFERENT things than those that are babysat by violence in the movies, the TV, the gaming worlds, etc. When "intimacy" is held in the same HIGH esteem as violence is in this country, will we see THE WORLD be a better place. We hold high, a cross where someone had to "suffer" for us, yet we do not hold high the road that says THIS is Life, live it free and "be happy" in it (Beer commercials don't count).
@Liars, Your're right, I totally over estimated it. Italy's annual defense budget is 1.6 of their GDP, about 34 Billion a year. We would only need a fraction of that to make a huge difference in in the state of mental health treatment here in the USA. 1% of our military budget would be about 8 billion. So if you wanted to split hairs to have something to post about, you won. Feel better? You missed the point.
You missed the point. None of our recent mass murderers were under mental health care or too poor to receive it had there been a mental health clinic on every block. If they haven't been declared mentally unfit or ordered for treatment what good would more clinics do? As stated about this kid no one ever suspected he could do such a thing and that's the same thing said about 90% of these killers.
how tragic and heart renching, what kind of a country have we become? We seem to put more emphasis on treating animals the right way (remember Pasado the donkey) then we do people. Yesterday I felt ashamed to be an American! I have children and 3 grandchildren and my heart goes out to the parents of this little ones.
Thank law enforcement for stopping this before it happened. This guy if all the evidence is true should be terminated. If he is verer back on the streets he will want to get back at everyone.
Mandatory .45 ACP lobotomy.
Maybe we can get some information from this boy to use for profiles. That still won't cure what's destroying our society, but it couldn't hurt.
This guy is a perfect example showing that mental illness is the enemy, not guns. Guns and bombs are the symptoms. Mental illness is the disease.
Mental Illness. Nobody really seems to questions WHY there is so much "mental illness" lately, and why it is causing people to murder others in massacres. Mental illness can be simply defined as the inability to deal and function with reality. Unfortunately, our REALITY is so messed up, accepting it will drive you just as crazy. Our government is working against us in many cases, our entertainment industry is focused on violence, sex, domination and destruction. Movies featuring torture, mutilation, and hundreds of deaths are shown as entertainment to children. Games that promote violence and hatred are the norm, and games without hurting or killing are seen as boring. Children are abused and molested by priests and doctors, and family members, the very people the children KNOW they are supposed to trust. Our health industry is more focused on making money, than making people well, promoting drugs with side effects worse than they "diseases" they are supposed to cure.
Living in such a backwards, scary, violent world, where we are supposed to accept this madness as "normal" is driving more and more people to commit "insane" acts.
Damn straight. You really nailed it. This country is on its way down, because it sure as h*ll ain't going up. Unfortunately, most people cannot keep up with the speed of the fall. Once everything hits bottom people will start to feel settled again. But until then expect more and more murders like in Newtown, Aurora, Clackamas, Chicago, Detroit, Pima Country Arizona. These murders will be like popcorn going off. First a "pop." Then another "pop." Then a "pop. pop." Until all the popcorn goes off all at once. And then it will stop.
Yes! You nailed it! I was going to say those exact words! :)
Has anyone considered the probability of all of the media coverage of these incidents, causing these folks to go out "in a blaze of glory" for the post-mortem publicity?
So lets just say that we cannot report news anymore, you know it has to be the media's fault.
Shoot the F%$&n Bast%&rd straight away. The world will be better for it.
Clamp down on media feeding frenzies. They sure got a lot on the facts wrong about the Sandy Hook incident.
yes they did jeff every 5 minutes the news agencies kept contradicting what they last said. the news agencies nowadays are not even worth the watching. the days of good ole walter and fact checking before disseminating the information to the public are over with.
There is also a plot at an Enid, OK school. It's on News9.com. I am keeping my kids home next week!
I have to ask what type of homes do these young men live in that their parents don't know what their kids are up to?Columbine comes to mind when I read about a young man like this.My mother knew what we were doing and what we had in our rooms. We had no access to guns and we had very little allowances. She told me that we got that little allowance so as not to have enough spending money to buy things that we shouldn't like drugs. As far as I'm concerned the parents of any minor who is able to plot these types of events should be charged with child neglect. If you don't what your kids are doing then you are a neglectful parent.
Shrekk posted something that was educational. Why are people ignoring this author? His comments should be reinstated.
Both the Enid and Bartlesville plots were hatched before what happened in Connecticut, so this isn't a copycat thing. What is going on with people?
How many of these kids who play violent games so much they think nothing about killing... It's just a big game to them.
America.... Our kids would soon kill than clean their rooms... It's only just starting...
Ah, I see the NRA shills are out again. "It's all the media's fault! They should stop reporting the truth!" How about this, how about they continue to report the truth and let these dangerous people know they stand a good chance of getting caught? I know, it's another story that makes gun owners look bad but tough luck. the public needs to know what's going on.
If the media actually posted the truth and nothing but, I would pay more attention to it. But Reagan told them they can print anything they want and they do. They politically slant every article they post.
This is why more people should have guns!! If one teacher at the elementary school had a gun on campus, the massacre would have been stopped. If one citizen in the Portland Oregon Mall had a concealed weapon, the shooter would have been the only casualty. The shooting at the movie theater would've lasted seconds if the guy next to the shooter had a gun. Think about this......Would you go out in public and start shooting people if the majority also had guns?? If Kip Kinkle (Thurston High School) was publicly gutted, would the Columbine kids say, "Yea, let's do that in our school so we can get the same." To stop copy cats, you have to make an example of the offenders.
I play violent video games and I don't think about killing, so I don't think that's the issue here.
Video games are played by people all over the world, including kids. But this is purely an American phenomenon. Its not games or movies.
Agreed. I have played violent video games (I am playing Assassin's Creed 3 now, actually) and watched R movies since I was a kid, and I even listened to Marilyn Manson on occasion back in HS. My parents didn't care what I did just so long as I kept my grades up and stayed out of trouble.
Now that I am in my 30's, I am a college graduate, self-employed, productive member of society. In all these years, one of the worst things I have gotten in trouble for was the one time when I got a ticket for driving 10 mph over the limit. I am not violent, I am not a criminal, and I have never even been in a fight.
Violent video games and other media will not make a sane, stable person turn to a life of crime and depravity. Only those who are already disturbed on some level would be affected. But, the media itself isn't the cause of the root problem.
Just because one person has a certain reaction or nonreaction to stimuli does not mean that is not the cause of other people. Some people can go to war and come home normal while others suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome. Violent video games 'could' and I stress the word COULD since I have no proof, add to a underlying mental health issue.
Young kids playing them can be affected by the constant raping, killing and maiming depending on how violent the game is, not all kids are wired the same. But some CAN be affected and actually act on it. Bring back Howdy Doody! :)
Freedom4Everyone - do your homework before you post garbage. Apparently you did not read about the man in China who slashed 20 elementary age children a few days ago. What about the man in Europe who murdered kids on an island as at camp? That's only the tip of the iceberg.
@ freedom,
reason you dont hear that much about the violent events in other countries, is because they keep them low keyed on the news. while our news agencies go bugnuts with the story, get many of the facts wrong, and set up the perpetrator as a hero to the mentally ill.
Yankee, You have no mental problems but you are the perfect person to ask. Let's say you are a person that has trouble with any numerous brain disorders. Would a violent video game put killing into another realm within these individuals that you yourself would never go? I am so serious. What ever issue the kids going to school need to be reassured they are safe. If schools cant handle security then time to call up national guard an assure our children this wil never ever happen agun . Putting armed national guard will accomplish two things one it will assure children that they are safe thus assure teachers staff have best train guards them an children. Next it will restore order in schools so wont be any more bullying an fights ending any kind violance or peer pressure..Appartently we people insist that presdent orders guard our schools ,that means all schools including private or religious
Finding out what is causing this should be job one. I cant help but wonder of bullying isnt a part of it. Why else would these kids be so angry at the world?
--
The problem is sin not video games and forgiveness is found only in our LORD and Saviour JESUS CHRIST.
Well tell you what, have your Jesus Christ come down and speak the masses because he's been awfully quiet for the last 2000 years. Besides if your god can allow such a thing to happen to innocent children in the school yesterday, that god will NEVER be worshiped by me.
Two words dispel your argument gbgentleman... free will
Got to love that "free will" clause.
The religious fanatics tell us about all of the things Jesus requires of us. They tell us that His word is the gospel. They tell us that we must obey at least ten commandments or suffer the consequences. However just in case He was too busy to intervene they just blame free will.
Britt Carter - "free will" is the excuse that all you religious fanatics use when events like this happen.
Cool...he's 18. He's an adult...straight to adult prison.
Where he'll still be when he gets a GED.
ged and college degree, of course we will be paying for it.
The boy was found at a house on the westside of Bartlesville, which we all consider the "bad" side of town. He was most likely low-income. Couldn't say what his mental state was. I think it was better to be safe than sorry, considering recent events. If this was due to bullying, I have to say that Bartlesville Schools seems to want to ignore any issues with bullying that come up. Not much of a support system for kids that have that problem.
Low income has nothing to do with who is capable of doing some crime of this nature. A person's wealth is not an indicator of who's a candidate to carry out these type of crimes. Just look as the last 10 mass murders in this country and you will see very few were poor or minorities. So their wealth or race is not a good indicator.
