Updated at 8:26 p.m. ET: Americans came together in the thousands Sunday to honor the memories of the 26 victims of the shootings at a Connecticut elementary school.
This Sunday was Gaudete Sunday, the Advent observance of joy and celebration, but in churches and cathedrals across the country, the message was one of reassurance and comfort for the distressed and the afflicted.
Hundreds of people signed a book of condolences and prayed special prayers Sunday morning at Our Lady of the Cross Parish in Holyoke, Mass.
"I lost a little child once, just a matter of days old, and that's still with me although it's 50 years later," Paula Brunault of Holyoke told NBC station WWLP of Springfield, Mass.
"I just know that prayers surround the people, really and truly. It's the best thing we can do for them," she said.
The Rev. Scott Kubinski, pastor of Christ the Redeemer Parish in the Elmira, N.Y., area, denied that the shootings were the will of God. Instead, he told parishioners at St. Casimir's Catholic Church, it was the fruit of the free will that God allows people to have, NBC station WETM of Elmira reported.

"God isn't happy about it, but God is with us through it all, giving us strength," he said. "That's why people do turn to faith in times of sadness and why they turn to prayer."

At Bayside Church, an Evangelical Covenant megachurch in Roseville, Calif., Senior Chaplain Mindi Russell told thousands of families who packed inside to pray for the victims and families of Friday's massacre.
Russell said it was understandable that children were asking why the shooting happened and why so many people were killed.
As families hugged one another and prayed for the violence to end, Russell reassured the congregation that while there are bad people in the world, there are many more good people, NBC station KCRA of Sacramento reported.
NFL teams also honored the shooting victims, lowering flags to half-staff and observing a moment of silence before all of Sunday's games. Some teams brought young children onto the field, and players — many of them visibly moved — stood hand in hand with them.
The New England Patriots — whose owner, Robert Kraft, also owns a box company that has a factory less than a mile from Sandy Hook Elementary School — were wearing black-ribbon logos on their helmets for Sunday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers.
The Patriots also planned to fire 26 white flares — one for each of the victims — at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
The New York Giants wore decals bearing the letters SHES — standing for Sandy Hook Elementary School — on their helmets Sunday for their game in Atlanta against the Falcons. Coach Tom Coughlin told NFL.com that his team had been "very, very much affected" by the shootings.
The New York Jets were to wear the same decal Monday night for their game against the Tennessee Titans.

After we waste are time banning the gun, how are we going to stop the MENTALLY ILL PEOPLE from strapping on bombs. I'm sure this liberal thinks, it was a sane person that was pulling the trigger on the gun.
There has never been a ban on semi automatic guns. The ban was on rifles that either looked like assault rifles or actually were. The law was silly. Case in point, Let's say we wanted to buy back then two identical assault rifles with bayonets. One made in Russia, the other China. The Russian gun was considered a collectable with or without the bayonet and wasn't banned, but the Chinese gun with the bayonet was banned but not the one without it. Both had the same function and capability but somehow having a bayonet on a Chinese rifle made it illegal.
Gun control your full of crap that will not stop this. What will stop it people need to start rasing there kids again not video games not rap stars who spout about street cred from killing people. Simple 2 steps
1 - Get involved in your kids life. Watch what video games they play what movies they watch TV show they watch music they listen to. Get off your lazy ass get involved in rearing your children again! A gun does not talk to someone and say Pick me up shoot a school or church or mall up. Enviroment is important and when that enviroment is violent video games music and movies that glorify shooting and killing well guess what they will get program to believe that is the real world. We make video games as real to life as we can our movies are in 3 D so we can see crap explode and fly off the screen it desensitizes(?) our children to what violents acts are.
2 - Hey media shut it down really 24 hours a day for 3 days now all that does is encourge these losers to get there street cred by doing acts like this. report it maybe do a special soon afterwards but really 24 hrs a day for what the next week. Think about it again sensational coverage adds to a losers mental image of them gaining fame one way or the other.
So people get off your ass get from in front of your TV's, Computers, phones and work get back involved in your childrens life, I use to get mad at my late father because he was always there always talking to me about life and other things. He was always aware of who I ran with what I was doing guess what I have no record married to the same wonderful woman 37 yrs. I was involved with my kids the same why introduced them to hunting and shooting always knew who they ran with what they watched played and listen to guees what both are very producitve and no records wow imagine that. My grandkids guess what I will be there for them as I know my sons will be. Quit blaming guns and start blaming enviroment and parents it starts at home.

Why not make the schools safer from these freaks.
Make the schools harder to get into but not out of.
Hire an armed guard or even train a certain number of school educators and staff so they can react to a situation properly. Had the staff encountered the shooter with a weapon or even a Taser, other than their bare hands, things probably would have been different.
Wishing for the guns to just go away is not going to happen.

This man likely watched the union rioting in Michigan with the President's encouragement. Obama condoned rather than condemned the behavior of the men beating people that did not agree with them. They tore down a tent and trapped people in wheelchairs. Obama and Eric Holder approved. Why would this man not think that violence is wrong? The president does not. Remember how the president stopped the the Fast and Furious investigation with an Executive order?

Yes, we need an efficient and all inclusive mental health care system, but we also need strict gun laws.
USA has by far most deaths by firearms compared to all other developed nations. USA also has very lax gun laws.
A third problem that should be addressed is the fact that this nation has some love/hate relationship to violence. It's in most TV-shows, movies and video games. Could we have some quality entertainment please (and less commercials)?
We have gun regulations!! We need to eliminate the illegal sales of these guns that are used to murder at will not by the gun but by the person holding the gun. When we catch them they should be executed within 30 min like the mad animals that they are. These senseless murders would then stop!

If capital punishment were a deterrent, we would have no mass murders. Most mass murderers end their killing sprees with suicide. Do you really believe they are afraid to die? I believe you took this out of context, they aren't saying that the shooting was at a High School they are stating that thousands came together at the High School for the victims to honor the memories.
There are other reasons why people turn to faith and prayer: habit from childhood and pressure from families in adulthood. They certainly don't turn to faith for answers. Faith does not give answers, it merely stops questions. And as the saying goes, two hands working does more than a thousand hands folded in prayer.
That guy featured yesterday with the bulldog (giving out free hugs) is admirable; it's hands working. Praying is just about the least someone can do during a tragedy. Why society continues to heap respect upon those who offer prayers is beyond me.
I don't care if people pray, but I will not be duped into thinking it is as effective as all those people (even the bulldog owner) who do actual work.

In regards to the article, it is heartening to see how many are reaching out to provide any possible level of support to these hurting families. As a father of grade schoolers it just breaks my heart thinking how difficult the loss of a precious one in this manner must be for them. Personally, I have been doing extra things to help children in my area. In that respect I agree with Atheist. With hands working together maybe we can make this world better for children.
PRAYER: It is a statistical fact that patients in hospitals who know they are being prayed for recover faster, Doctors have been quoted saying "We do not no why or how but the effects are significant" and they approve of the practice.

If you truly had God in your hearts you wouldn't need to have it is schools. I send my grandson to school to learn to read, study math, science, computers, etc. Prayers should be taught in Sunday schools, privite christian schools or in homes, not in public schools. I went to school in the 1960's an not one time did we take time in class to pray. Nothing is keeping children in school from praying if they want to, it is called silent prayer. I do it quite often everyday even when I am alone.

Correct, just like a patient who is told people are hoping for their recovery. However, if you don't tell the person they are being prayed for the recovery is not impacted. This is a psychological effect, not a supernatural one.
There is no statistical evidence that prayer does squat beyond acting as a relaxation strategy and placebo effect.
Eng, I agree, but when you are overwhelmed with sorrow, praying comforts a grieving mind. Praying together means grieving together and sharing the sadness. A devastated mind cannot deal with material stuff like getting a hug from a dog.
Of course, there are practical ways of helping grieving people, like offering to go grocery-shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc., but it doesn't replace the praying and grieving and sharing of tears, which by the way is a long process. These parents, who lost children, will never be the same.
Likewise, I feel sorry for the brother to the gunman, as well as the father. I hope they have lots of support.

Your egregious and nearly unreadable grammar and spelling are more "what's wrong with this country" than a lack of faith in a possibly nonexistent entity.
Freedoms, Perhaps you are unaware that almost always the shooter kills himself. There is no one to execute. And quite often, as in Connecticut, the guns were legal. And, of course, these kinds of murders won't stop. We can't start watching each other every second. We are already paranoid enough. Bad things happen.
What we can do is stop stigmatizing depression, and have mental health advocates in schools. We can change our attitudes about guns, and as a society question our obsessions with violence and guns. We can promote healthy lifestyles. We can express compassion and promote compassion. We can help families and give community support when they are in trouble. We can stop looking for simplistic answers to complex problems. We can stop being so critical and hurtful in the way we talk to and about people with whom we disagree.
When a young man (really a child when you get to be my age) kills someone, he poisons that community. But each and every time someone goes online and posts hateful rhetoric, they are poisoning the country. Hate is contagious, and hate speech kills the possibility that a conversation will take place and solutions found. Each and every person who spouts hate in public is contributing to collective fear and distrust. Just because we have something to say does not mean we should say it. It is no great show of intellect to vomit in public, and some of what we read is little more than that. Some folks can't help themselves, most can.
My suggestion is that posters who want to carry on an actual dialogue, even in disagreement, should shun those who want to spew hatred. If no one answers their posts, they will look elsewhere for people they can rile. Clearly, some folks will say anything, no matter how dumb, misinformed, wrong, to, I don't know - get attention or anger people. We can make a choice whether to allow their foolishness to dominate, define, or control the conversation. We don't know who these people are who are posting this stuff, nor do we know their agenda. They are not worth bothering about. They are not trying to enlighten. They are bringing darkness to our attempts to find meaningul ideas about how to solve our collective problems. Ignore them and stick to the issues. There are more than enough of us who have something to contribute.

You don't need assault weapons to protect your family. You don't need 100 round magazines to protect yourself if someone breaks into your home. If you know how to shoot the gun it only takes one bullet to kill the intruder, the other 99 will do nothing but turn the intruder into hamburger for your children to see on the living room floor. People don't need an assult weapon to protect their families and the only kind of hunting that these weapons are used for is to hunt people.
But if you miss with the first shot a second would sure be nice to have. If you study some of the shoot outs that police have had you will learn that many times even at close range they miss. Not so easy to shoot a threat when they are shooting back.
What do you consider an assault weapon anyway? A mean looking gun, a knife, a car. Many things can be used for mass murder and have.
A few years ago some nutjob drove his car onto a playground, running over some of the kids there. You didn't see it plasterd all over the news for days on end and repeated every few months. Just as effective as a gun but because everyone drives a car banning them would be unpopular. Still some parents lost their child and I'm sure they feel just as bad as the parents in Conn.

You may not realize this, but you and I are the government. The government derives its powers from us, the people. Mankind did evolve from some ooze. That does not preclude God's intervention and action in the evolutionary process. The trouble with pushing religion in public schools is the wide variety of beliefs and non-beliefs that exist in our society. We have Jews, Buddhists, Shintoists, Muslims, atheists, etc. etc. We have Catholics, Mormons, evangelicals and main-line churches. Do you propose we have Jewish prayers one day, Shinto prayers the next, maybe Muslim prayers the following day? I, for one, do not which to have my child proselytized by some religious fanatic pushing their particular brand of religion. I am sorry that science has come up with so much information that contradicts parts of your belief system, but it is just science. You can ignore it if you prefer. The pursuit of knowledge does not always tell us things we want to know. Sometimes, I have been disappointed or disturbed by scientific studies that didn't turn out the way I had hoped. But fact is fact. There isn't much point in rejecting it.

My last post is just a small sampling...legal drugs or guns? Maybe too much attention to the guns and not to mental health issues involved. Go to this site and see, was the "boy" on any kind of legal medications?
It is also possible that they were placed on these drugs because they were disturbed and the drugs were simply ineffective in controlling their disturbance. It is difficult to establish which is cause and which is effect.
Doug, your data shows that our mental health care system needs to be improved, no doubt.
But we also need stricter gun laws, as well as less violence on tv, movies and video games

These shootings always open the political door to gun control. The gun control advocates don't understand or don't want to understand what the real problem is. The society we have today breeds this type of would be killers and it seems that no one wants to believe it. From political correctness to reality television has now changed the mindset of Americans to the point that "correct" and "reality" are the least part of the thought process we Americans use nowadays.
PC has limited our ability to raise our children correctly by using discipline and punishment as a tool to teach our children right from wrong. Every time this is discussed the PC group jump on the child abuse band wagon and point the finger at anyone who spanks their children as if they were criminals. This is ridiculous at best and it has taken us down the road of raising disrespectful, selfish, low self esteem children in the USA. Pathetic is what it is.
Children are now confused as to what is right and wrong and who is in charge. The parents hands are tied when it involves the discipline and punishment of our children and the children have no other choice but to make the rules up themselves. After a good dose of reality television and living in the PC world we have created for them, the decisions that children make for their own futures are very, very skewed from reality at best.
These children grow in to young adults with this "skewed reality" as their guide and then find out that they are not Kim Kardashian or Justin Beiber (I hope I spelled those names correctly) and are angry with their parents because they don't live in fantasy land and drive a Porsche. Now, most young adults get over this in time and or just live with disappointment in their pathetic lives. Although, some of these losers, and this is a small number that seems to be growing, but some lash out at who they think are to blame (mommy and daddy) and society (whoever is getting the attention) by killing these people.
One thing does come to mind, who did this kid vote for? As a matter of fact, I would like to know who all these coward killers voted for. If this is going to made into a political agenda war, lets bring it all out into the open then discuss it fairly.

Some say you were mentally ill and or abused and didn’t know better <whimper, whimper> … Well I say no matter what your EXCUSE puppy boy you willfully killed 20 innocent children that NEVER DID ONE STINKING THING TO HURT YOU and that you not only deserve death and damnation but I hope that every moment of your afterlife be living hell and torment!
By the way Adam ole boy I’m also in full agreement with there being no headstone or any evidence that you ever existed on that cold empty ditch they bury your worthless carcass in, just a hand written card board sign that reads: “Public Toilet”
May the Souls of the Departed, Faithful Rest in Peace. May God give the Strength and Courage to the families, Relatives and Near and Dear Ones of the Victims to Bear this Huge Loss. The Victims were Innocent Children. What harm had the Innocent Children done ? They had their full lives ahead of them ? May God Bless the Souls of the Victims. GOD Bless the Americans. Does anyone, other than me, think that the media needs to go on to other news stories? YES! It was a horrible tragedy! Yes, we all mourn the senseless loss of innocent lives. Now, what else is going on in the world?
I realize that the entire world stops for the families involved, but I, also, have had senseless tragedies in my life, life goes on. Too many people suffer severe depression around the holidays already without this being forced upon them day after day after day.
Let's get on with other news!

I agree with you! I'm sure those families that lost a child are pretty tired of having to live this thing over and over every day.
And you can be sure the news media will keep it up for the next few years also.
When my daughter was present at a "school shooting", at the age of 14, she said that the media was at least "as bad, if not worse" than the actual shooting!!
Give those poor families a break!
I had to withdraw my daughter from school and home school her for her last few years. The nightmares she was having were about being mobbed by the media!
When my son had died, years before the school shooting, the news media reminded me of a bunch of hyenas swarming over a dead body trying to scavenge every last piece of flesh they could find!
PLEASE have a little consideration and think about how much MORE trauma you are causing people!!!!!

Hollywood glorifies blood and guts, rapes, drug dealers and all criminals are glorified. Video games are disgusting but to an unstable person they are the poison they need
Do you notice all of these mass murders are very young people. Please lets clean up our culture to show some type of values. Until then do not ask me to listen to gun laws are the reason for this
