Police fatally shoot suspected killer of 2 cops

Topeka Police Department

Cpl. David Gogian, 50, had been with the Topeka Police Department since September 2004.

TOPEKA, Kan. — A police standoff in connection with the fatal shootings of two Topeka, Kan., police officers ended with the suspected gunman dead from police fire early Monday, according to local officials.

After the man refused to exit a home police had surrounded, officers launched tear gas to drive him out.

“At approximately 6 a.m., after numerous attempts to make contact with the individual, gas was deployed, and the suspect came out carrying a gun,” Jay Simecka of the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. “Shots were fired by law enforcement, and the suspect was hit and transported to a local hospital for treatment. It is unknown at this time if the suspect fired the gun he was carrying.”

The man, who police identified as 22-year-old David Edward Tiscareno of Topeka, later died from his wounds at the hospital, NBC station KMBC in Kansas City, reported.

Police believe Tiscareno shot and killed Cpl. David Gogian, 50, and Officer Jeff Atherly, 29, while they were responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle at a grocery store. The gunman opened fire on them within minutes of their arrival.

They died later at the hospital, Topeka Police Chief Ronald Miller said, calling the shootings “unspeakable,” the Associated Press reported.

A third officer was at the scene when the shooting happened, but was not injured.

Topeka Police Department

Officer Jeff Atherly, 29, had been with the Topeka Police Department since April 2011.

Miller said there was more than one person in the vehicle that police were investigating. Officers later found the vehicle outside a house about 10 blocks from the grocery store, but when they searched the home they didn't find the shooting suspect, the AP reported.

The chief declined to say why officers were investigating the vehicle and why it was considered suspicious.

A small crowd met for a candlelight vigil outside police headquarters after hearing about the shooting. As the group gathered, police officials announced to reporters nearby that the officers had died, the AP reported.

Gogian started with the Topeka Police Department in September 2004. Atherly had been with the department since April 2011.

yes James, and no one was ever murdered before guns were invented. Evil people kill people with guns. as well as anything else you can think of. Gun control wont work because the government cant stop anything else illegal either. The problem isnt the tool its the user of the tool. "We need to do something about gun violence!" How about something about violence period. The people are the problem. Some would say that Evil people can get guns thats the problem. Non evil people can get guns too. And if you are worried about this arm yourself. If gun coltrol worked, all sane people would be for it. It doesn't . Your personal safety is your responsibility. The government isnt going to fix things. IT never has. Save yourself as well as your loved ones.

another ridiculous analogy. the simplistic "it's people. NO, it's the weapon, wake up and realize it. No one has ever mentioned a ban on guns, no one wants to take guns away, people want a sensible control or weapons. Everything does not have to be an extreme opinion or witty retort.

BTW, the government fixes plenty of things. How about the air your breathe? The water you drink? The highways you drive? It's very easy to sit a computer and badmouth everything and be "the funny internet guy". Reality is different.

Hellfire missiles from drones. If we can kill terrorist citizens w/o due process, we sure as hell can kill some suicidal rednecks clinging to their pea shooter, thinking it can protect them from the government.

Not all of us are rednecks. We are also educated people who have read the constitution and realize that if our government takes away our rights for one amendment it will do the same on others and we the people will no longer be in control but will be controlled as slaves such as russia/china/iran and other countries that do not have the right to protect themselves.

Think about it. If you took guns away from law abiding citizens, the only ones left with guns will be the criminals. We need to bring back discipline back and make kids and parents be responsible. Parents don't parent their kids anymore. Ever been to a restaurant with little ones running around it like it is a playground.

More laws will not stop crime! The guy that pulled his gun on the shooter and had him in his sights just wasn't man enough to pull the trigger, evidently he has a clean record which doesn't mean s*** if you can't use it why carry it?. A gun makes you feel bigger and safer but is worthless unless you can use it when needed. None of these school shooter's had a criminal record. Real criminals would never harm kids, they will kill any one who goes to prison for hurting kids, wait until sandusky goes out of protective custody-he's a deadman. If you remove guns you will just harm your selves. China a man went to a school with a knife and slashed 22 kids,he did not have a gun just a damed knife why didn't any one stop him? Quit blaming criminals we don't hurt kids.

If you think that the USA was divided on voting for President in November, just think what this will do to our country if they decide to change the 2nd Amendment? And to think that it will be our government that will decide this and not "We the People."

Need more details on this event. Both shot in the head? Was it close quarters? Was it with a rifle? Was this a set up killing?

Yes, even if you have a gun, you can be shot first. If someone wants to kill me with a gun, they can do it with me being armed or not. I might be stabbed in the back and never have a chance to reach my concealed weapon. If someone has that intent, they can accomplish it.

I am sure these were well trained policemen, but were taken my surprise on what may have been planned.

Let me see if I have this correct. We will have fewer people killed by guns if more people have guns so they won't be killed by guns. Police are trained to use guns. They are the professionals. So let's arm amateurs so they can defend themselves against aggressive bad guys who are motivated to kill for what they want.

The only way to stop the gun culture is: one, accept the facts (stop making truths up that support the gun-nuts mental illness), two, pass gun laws and three have the religious leaders support the laws.

It seems many people are desperate. Perhaps a healthy dose of morals and God is needed to curtail these crimes. You can't legislate morality that comes from a proper family upbringing. Taking away our right to own guns will not solve the problem. Mexico has gun control yet they have murders all the time. Although the ordinary citizen cannot own a gun the cartels never got the message and don't care either they have plenty to go around. As the U.S. continues to slide in economic power things will get worse before they get better. It is time Americans once again took pride in their country and what they produce. Until that happens unemployment will be stagnant and so will income levels. BUY American from American owned companies or watch as times get even harder for us and the collapse as well. The government can't fix this no matter who or how much they tax us. Prosperity comes from a strong economy...PERIOD. Now please say a prayer for these officers and the children killed in that senseless act of violence in Connecticut.

                              I have very mixed feelings.

Cop in this country (NYC, and many places I have visited, I have never been to Kansas so I am not certain if cop are pigs in Kansas as well) have as a rule become a band of thugs whose primary job is to steal your money, and who secondarily kidnap (Call it arrest if you wish but locking people up who are harming no one simply so you can get a raise is kidnapping)

I remember as a child how friendly cops were, (even if they were criminals they were still out to protect and help) and I never dreamed the day would come that I find all pigs guilty until proven innocent. There is a part of me that wants to do shots as the world is now likely minus two evil people. (It is truly sad that average law abiding citizens cant trust law enforcement)

IF these cops were innocent, I hope they execute their murderers, but unfortunately I am not convinced the cops were innocent. If they were part of a mob would the Kansas PD tell us?

As for gun control, it’s a horrible idea until we can trust out elected officials, police and those in power to not be corrupt. Perhaps if we have a clairvoyant government that does not take liberties, but alas we do not. GUN CONTROL IS AN AWFUL IDEA. Governments kill way more frequently than do isolated retards.

Here's a hint. Police are human beings, the same as you and me. Police can also perceive the feelings and attitudes of others much the same as you and I.

I will submit to you that you are receiving nothing more in return than you are displaying and/or giving. If you treat them with respect, they reciprocate. If you immediately give them a sanctimonious holier than thou attitude, the will respond in kind.

I would suggest you knock the chip off your shoulder and treat them respectfully. I have already realized from nothing more than your post that is a major part of the problem you have with them. Don't you think someone dealing with you face to face can perceive the same?

It is all about the guns people - it is all about the guns. Look at Canada to the north, they don't have guns and they don't have people killing each other on a daily basis and they can afford the social programs, like health care and welfare because they don't have to spend all there tax revenue on policing and jails. Now look at Finland, they do have gun laws similar to the US and they do have a higher murder rate. It really seems quite simple to me. It is impossible to stop it now, there are just too many guns out there. The other problem is proactive policing - if these cops hadn't decided to investigate a car that they deemed suspicious they would probably be alive right now. I think police should only investigate when there is a documented reported crime.
