Family: Newtown boy's favorite teacher died cradling him in her arms

As families struggle to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives in the wake of the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., some are clinging to bits of solace from the grim details that emerge.

The family of six-year-old Dylan Hockley, one of the 20 children killed in the shootings last Friday, revealed in a statement Monday that their child's favorite teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary cradled him as they both died in a hail of bullets.

"We take great comfort in knowing that Dylan was not alone when he died but was wrapped in the arms of his amazing aide, Anne Marie Murphy," Dylan’s family said in a statement. "Dylan loved Mrs. Murphy so much and pointed at her picture on our refrigerator every day."

Murphy, 52, a mother to four children with her husband, Michael, was a special education teacher in Dylan’s classroom at Sandy Hook. She was a 14-year resident of Sandy Hook and formerly of Katonah, N.Y., according to her obituary.

"She will be remembered for her love of the arts, walks in the outdoors and most importantly: her family," her obituary said.

Authorities reportedly told Murphy's parents, Hugh and Alice McGowan, that their daughter helped shield some of her students from the rain of bullets.

“A first responder said she was a hero,” her 86-year-old father told Newsday. “You don’t expect your daughter to be murdered. That’s sort of a shocker.”

Murphy’s mother, also 86, said she grabbed her rosary and cried when she got the news.

Dylan’s parents, Ian Thomas, who is British, and Nicole Marie (Moretti), both 42, had lived in England for 18 years before moving to a house on the same street as Nancy Lanza, the gunman's mother and first victim, in January, The Telegraph (U.K.) reported. They said they chose Newtown specifically for the tight-knit community and the Sandy Hook school.

“We do not and shall never regret this choice,” they said. “Our boys have flourished here and our family’s happiness has been limitless.”

The family also praised other staffers and teachers who died at Sandy Hook.

"We cannot speak highly enough of Dawn Hochsprung and Mary Sherlach, exceptional women who knew both our children and who specifically helped us navigate Dylan's special education needs," Dylan's family added. "Dylan's teacher, Vicki Soto, was warm and funny and Dylan loved her dearly."

Both Hochsprung, 47, the school principal, and Sherlach, 56, the school psychologist, died while lunging at the gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, in an attempt to overpower him. Soto, 27, a first-grade teacher, shielded her students and ushered them into a closet, putting herself between them and the gunman. She was found huddled with the children.

"Though our hearts break for Dylan, they are also filled with love for these and other beautiful women who all selflessly died trying to save our children," the family said.

In the statement, the Hockley family said Dylan loved to cuddle, bounce on his trampoline and play computer games. He also looked up to his older brother, Jake. He was learning to read and "was so proud when he read us a new book every day."

"We will always be a family of four," they said. "He is forever in our hearts and minds."

The only thing sadder than the Newtown shooting is the fact that this is encouraged by the government by setting aside places where psychopaths can freely attack innocent DEFENSELESS victims. This obscene tragedy brought to you by the state and federal government's ban on self protection on school properties.

I'm all for an armed guard in each scholl and more advanced deterrents on the property but arming teachers and staff in our schools is not the way to go. Put someone in the line of fire who will not hesitate to pull the trigger.

Pogo, Are you willing to pay higher taxes for an armed guard in every school? Are you willing to make the 1% who don't even send their kids to public school pay more? Won't that kill jobs? Giviing more guns to more people who are irresponsible and let the mentally ill take their guns IS NOT the answer!! For every responsible gun owner there are 10 irresponsible out there. Just look, every single shooting last week was because someone was irresponsible with their guns and the guns feel into the wrong hands!

If we are going to have armed guards at our schools, why can't we use our veterans? They have generally received the proper military training, have the mindset, and have respect for their weapons. Additionally, these men and women deserve to have jobs.. and let's face it, this would be an excellent fit for them.

Gun control or no gun control, a murderer will kill no matter what they have in hand. McVeigh for example. I for one, do not like any guns in the house, and have no plans of owning one. But reading some instances guns save lives too! So I don't know.... We sure are hit between a rock in a hard place.

Ed, stop screaming the same old, same old post. It makes no more sense when you repeat it than it did when you posted it originally. And your need to use exaggerated font size and bold face is an indication of your short fuse. Something to be concerned about.

And how dare you use a vine about the memory of a dead child and his parents' pain to engage in childish and hateful name calling. Despicable.

“Gun prohibition sets the stage for the slaughter of innocent children. We must repeal these anti-self-defense laws now to minimize the likelihood they will occur in the future and to the limit the damage done when they do,” she stated on Sunday.

For several years after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, gun prohibitionists blocked pilots from carrying firearms. But after it became undeniable that guns are an essential line of defense against hijackers and other terrorists when the lives of innocent passengers are at stake, Congress finally passed legislation allowing it.

It’s time to take the same approach with teachers, school administrators, and security guards, who should be allowed to carry the tools necessary to protect the students in their care. It’s time to put an end to gun-free zones and make it much easier for responsible adults to arm, train, and protect themselves and the people they love from the violent criminals who seek to harm them, Libertarians and conservatives have said.

DOCJT. I only respond in kind to morons that initiate a challenge. Take your pathetic 'despicable ' accusation and shove it. The only thing that is despicable is idiot liberals like you that want to make it impossible for normal people who are responsible from protecting the innocent ones they love while calling those that do take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others as archaic and pathetic. Take your whining liberal drivel and accusatory BS somewhere else because it doesn't cut it in the real world.

DOCJT You seem to be capable of only proving your ignorance to a greater level at each consecutive post. The Federal Gun Free Schools Zone Act prohibits carrying firearms on school grounds in most cases, effectively criminalizing the right to self-defense in places filled with the most vulnerable citizens.

This prohibits those closest to the children needing protection from being able to provide it. You apparently advocate these atrocities since you obviously support the statutes that permit this carnage. Maybe you should look in the mirror and feel a little bit of the responsibility for this since you advocate a gun free, defense free open season on innocent victims with no means of self protection.

Instead they foment accusatory psycho-babel liberal gibberish in an attempt to denigrate anyone with a logical argument that disproves their idiotic social engineering fantasy world. They are not capable of derivative based deductive reasoning and must attempt to legitimize their unfounded sophomoric emotion based stance with pathetic diatribe.

Let’s perform the standard liberal ploy of calling someone a derogatory name rather than respond to the issue being discussed. And guess what, all of them do not allow weapons. So, see how easily your "proof" is shot down. Anacdotal evidence is meaningless.

Houstonconservative: You are right onpoint regarding the safety of guns in the home- They must be secured. However, your point about background checks is not quite accurate. There are serious loopholes through which guns can be bought and sold w/o any background checks. Gun shows, for example, require no checks nor do private sales out in the parking lot. We do have some work to do. 40% of all gun transactions are done w/o background checks.

Identifying individuals who suffer from mental illness is a tough one and doing a better job with that will be hard. We must try to do better and each community must commit to protect its children until such improvements take hold.

There are so many things wrong with this tragedy, obviously the killing of innocent baby's is absolutely heart breaking. I have to son's that are close to the ages of the 20 children that were mindlessly executed. I feel that the media needs to stop giving the shooter so much attention as I feel that's why we continue to see these things happening. These people are such loser's with no friends, so why not shoot innocent people, then show the world what a coward they are by killing themselves after they kill however many people they can. When the media puts so much focus on the shooter and briefly mention the victims, I think it fuels other A holes that are also losers start to think about the fact that if they do the same thing, they will be dead, but they know that the media will say their name, and let the world know all about them and that most people will know his name, but not one victimsname and that's a real tragedy. The media should report it of course, but if they didn't spend so much time talking about the perpetrator, and talked more about the victims. I feel that may help stop all of these "copy cat" idiots, this world is so messed up and I am so worried about the future of my boy's. I guess my main point is to the media, start focusing on the victims and not the shooter and we may see that there aren't as many copy cats in the future. My heart goes out to every single parent that lost their baby on the 14th, I cant imagine how they are feeling, and I certainly hope myself, or any other paren't wont have to experience this ever.

The founding fathers believed that private citizens should be permitted to have guns. The guns to which they referred were single shot muzzle loaders, a very long way from the sophisticated weaponry available today. If the "right to bear arms" is extrapolated to its logical conclusion, then every citizen also has a right to own nuclear warheads, flamethrowers and chemical and biological weapons. A weapon is a weapon, the numbers of people it can kill are not the issue.

The founding fathers also refused to give women the vote, endorsed slavery and only allowed men who owned property to vote. We have changed all of those rules. Why is the second amendment sacred? Why are we willing to sacrifice tens of thousands of people every year so that someone can collect a huge number of killing tools?

I understand hunting. I understand self-defense. But neither of these requires 30 round magazines or hollow point bullets or a weapon that will cut you in two. That is completely unnecessary to any legitimate use of a gun for hunting, target shooting, or self-defense.

Our founding fathers saw no problem with citizens owning the same types of firearms that the military used at the time. Explain that.

The 2nd is there for a reason, you seem to not understand why that is.

Besides the rifle you buy today only LOOKS like what the military uses. I own several, none of which are automatics. It is illegal to have an automatic in this country that was made after 1986. Even if you could afford one of those relics you first have to have the ATF plus your local law enforcement give you their "blessing" first. In the form of a tax stamp, in depth background check (takes about 6 months), home inspection, etc. But let's not let facts get in the way of our irrational disregard of the constitution.

I have a hard time believing there weren't any tell tale signs that this kid was capable of something like this. Our mental health care in this nation is an atrocity. The only kind of person capable of committing this nightmare is someone who has been mentally gone for a long time.

Let's stay on our Congress until this law is changed. President Obama read the names of all of the children who died that awful day in Connecticut, and let us all work in the names of those whom President Obama spoke of, to make this happen!

Teachers are a special breed. I have a teacher in my extended family, through marriage. She literally lives for her kids, and she calls them her kids. I could easily see her taking bullets to protect them. She spends her own money to get supplies that the budget cant manage.

This was a horrendous tragedy of the highest order. Seen some sad and heartbreaking events in my lifetime and this ranks right at the top of them all.

But the knee jerk reaction of so many in this country maybe saddens me even more. Lets just be honest here for a moment. America in all of it's greatness has a glaring flaw. And that flaw is that we are an extremely violent people. Either we directly involve ourselves in acts of violence or indirectly support said violence. it is part of our nature, our culture and our way of life. From our massive military, our armed law enforcement, entertainmest, etc. We may not like to admit this, but it is a fact all the same. So let's get our heads out of the clouds and face reality.

Anyone who believes that more gun control laws will prevent this sort of tragedy is either naive, illiterate or just plain ignorant. Gun control is people control. Plenty of laws on the books already. BTW, "automatic" weapons are rare and very expensive. Basically the play things of the rich. Been decades since ANY have to used to commit a crime. Also, the AR15 is not, despite what the media says, a very powerful weapon. Your average deer rifle packs a MUCH bigger punch. My 12 year old daughter shoots one.

Cocain is illegal, is it not? We have invested untold Billions into education, treatment, the prison system, DEA, FBI, the court system, endless laws, etc.. Yet to this very day ANYONE who wants it has no problem in getting it. On top of that some of this countries most vicious gangsters have rose to power simply because it is illegal. How has that worked out? And this is just one example. Anyone remember the effects of Prohibition?

As far as death tolls go, cars in fact kill more people than guns. This is a fact. So why not outlaw cars? Sounds silly doesn't it? it sounds silly because YOU like owning a car. So no matter how many lives are lost because of them you will defend to the death YOUR right to own and use one. Without compromise. But fact is you do not "NEED" one. So why should you be allowed to have one. Are thousands of deaths less important than your COVENIENCE? Think about it.

It is so easy to disregard others rights when you have no skin in the game. Well at least until it is your turn. Slippery slope indeed.

The 2nd amendment is there for a reason. And that reason has nothing to do with hunting or target shooting. Our founding fathers were smart enough to accept the fact that this is a violent world. They were also smart enough to accept the fact that governments almost always become corrupt and all consuming. The 2nd is there just for that reason. Ask the Tibetans how not being allowed to own guns has worked out for them. Ask a Jew from 1930's/40's Europe how not being allowed to own guns worked out for them. The first thing evil governments ALWAYS do disarm their own citizens. This is a historical fact. Learn from it. From Hitler to the Shoguns of Japan, the story has been the same.

Ask me if I need a 30 round Magazine and my answer will be YES. Why do you ask? As long as the criminals and Police have them, then so should I. As a law abiding, tax paying citizen, and father. As a citizen I tolerate all sorts of things that I do not like or condone. But this is AMERICA and I do not want anyway stepping on my RIGHTS so I respect the RIGHTS of others.

I'll respect your right to gay marriage, personal choice of religion, your right to live where you see fit, raise your kids as you see fit, own whatever vehicle you choose, to vote how ever you please, dress how you like, Coke or Pepsi, to join the KKK, to be a Free Mason, bark at the moon or whatever turns you on. I will, if not support, at least not deny you any of these things. So long as you leave me and my constitutional rights alone. Either the entire document means something or it means nothing.

After guns, free speech, right to assemble, vote, religious freedom and democracy are ALWAYS next. Think I'm exagerating? Crack open a history book.

Tired arguments. Gun control has been shown to work. Sates with more gun controls have overall lower homicide rates.

As far as cars, yes, they kill, but they have a purpose other than killing. Guns are made to kill, period. You can't drive them, you can't carve turkey with them.

2nd ammendment talks about a "well regulated" militia. What part of well regulated do you not understand?

No nut here. What is nutty is blaming objects for human failings. What is nutty is the belief that simply banning something makes it go away. If making things illegal worked then why do we still have murders, rapes, car thefts, drugs, the sex trade, etc.?

Fatty foods and sugar kill more people in this country than anything. Why not ban oreos and mountain dew?

DOCJT, why? Because will differ in opinion on this subject. I laid out numerous reasons for law abiding citizens to be allowed to keep out rights. Just because you do not hold the constitution to be important is not my problem.

My comparisons are valid. there are roughly the same number of cars as guns in this country. Yet cars cause more deaths. Just because this FACT does not support your opinion makes it no less valid.

I personally own numerous guns. None have ever harmed anyone. I have yet to see one jump up, load itself, walk down the street, pull it's own trigger and kill someone. So to blame an object is frankly extremely juvenile.

As to my other points, are you stating that my take on history is false? If so, I suggest that you start reading.

My pointing out the fact that we have made MANY things illegal in this country. Yet all of these things are still widely available not suite your opinion either? The sex trade is ILLEGAL, yet anyone who chooses to can pay for sex in no time. Cocain has been illegal for decades, yet anyone who wants it can get it no problem. These are the FACTS, rather you like it or not. Are you trying to say that in this ONE instance, it will be different? Really? Grow up.

How many people do you persoanlly know that were shot and killed? I knew four. This more than anything else convinces me that it is MY responsibilty to protect myself and my family. If you do not feel that way, that is your right. But it does not give you the right to step on my rights. What do you not understand?

It is people like YOU that have warped the 2nd Amendment into an excuse for our nation becoming the senseless slaughterhouse it is. I own a handgun, something that is one notch below a MACHINE GUN and anyone who considers themselves a "responsible gun owner" would never want to own a weapon like the one like the one used in the Sandy Hook killings or any of the shootings like Virginia Tech, Columbine, the Aurora theater, the Sikh Temple in WI and of course allowed extended clips to enable Jared Laughner to fire 30 rounds w/o stopping into a crowd of people before he had to reach for another and was overtaken in the process while attempting to do so after killing 6 and wounding several others in Tucson, AZ?

The ol' black helicopter gang and the gubmit and the UN is coming to take our guns crowd and the "commies our under our bed" bunch has been feeding the USA since Wilson and company dragged us into WWI and every war ever since.

But then if they are not available when that home invading murder rapist breaks into your home,,,,,er, the guns are locked up. Get a big dog and sleep well. This gun business is a bunch of nonsense.

But here in the real world, I have no beef with the vast majority of responsible and safety conscious gun owners. In fact, I think they should be the ones to lead the charge for sensible gun regulations. It's in their own interest as gun owners, and as potential victims of gun violence.

When asked why she was carrying a gun to her kids games, she said she was terrified her ex would kill her. She said she kept the gun on her person at all times.

Guess what? Her ex-husband broke into her house and struggled the gun away and killed her! Having a gun makes you no less safer than not having a gun. Just like this mother kept her guns for protection and her unstable son killed her with the very things she put her faith into keep her protected. Your an idiot if you think without proper training that you will be able to defend your life if you have a gun. Most often the person who has more experience with gun handling, the type of man who would rape a woman, will disarm you and kill you.

Call THAT justice or "freedom"? The argument was that "she no case for "stand your ground" and cold have gotten out of the house through the door or a window rather then pulling out her own gun in her own house on the guy who had just beat her up and fired it at the ceiling as this was considered "using a deadly weapon when it was not necessary". Explain THAT one to me please "law abiding gun owners" and I am one and find that whole thing total BULL@!$%# while a pos like Zimmerman who did have a prior record is still awaiting trial and it took a while nation and his obvious changing his story how many times, plus his judge father and a corrupt police department covering for him before anything was actually done to get this MURDERER to so far have to stand trial which we are still waiting to see.
Watch HIM get off while a woman is sentenced to 20 years in no time for actually trying to "defend herself with her gun" and didn't even SHOOT at the person who had beat her up in her OWN HOUSE!!! Gee, I thought that was what all you gun nuts say you BUY ALL THIS HARDWARE FOR-To defend yourselves!!!!
Now we have a child and a baby whose mother got locked away for 20 years for trying to do that very thing and the ex-husband who beat on her will probably get those KIDS. What's next? Him beating on them? Nice huh?

I'm neither conservative or a liberal, but we as a nation need to reevaluate what a group of men wrote on old scroll almost 300 years ago. We progress as time moves forward not in reverse. Technology and communication is light years from sending smoke signals and hopping on a horse with a letter, or sending telegrams. What our kids are exposed to now, compared to then doesn't compare. I get having the right to bear arms, but there need to be limitations along with extensive backround checks. I'm ex military and am extremely saddened by this. Seeing a young childs face on t.v. let alone 20 who were brutally murdered is the stomping of innocence and all that is pure.

Disdain for an utter hack. I suppose all the children that perish in drone attacks ordered by Obummer are just "gimmes" though, right? Go to the store, buy some more liberal Kool-Aid with your EBT card and relax a bit...maybe think things through rationally for a change.

Did you cry when every single child or adult was killed in Iraq Save your lack of sensibility for somewhere else. It's clear you don't like Obama. HE could do everything 100% to your liking, and you still wouldn't like him.

P.S. Obama won both the electoral college and popular vote. Something that hasn't been done since RONALD REAGAN. That speaks volumes to me. People are not ill advised, we just said NO to the failure of the GOP to actually select a candidate that did not flip flop every time a KOCHS Brothers Check was cashed.

Do not feed the trolls but rather IGNORE them and their spew as it raved up by other trolls who repeat the same junk verbatim. All you have to do is look for the obvious namecalling,, typical red-herring arguments, superiority complexes, projection tactics as well as deflection....Oh and we are ALWAYS right and you "libtards" are clueless and stupid. When the comments go there or anyone starts with Obummer and Obozo....time to hit the "ignore button". My intelligence or time need not be wasted on TROLLS. I'll state my piece but if I get responses that have any of the previous terms or tired, similar crap in them directed at me, forget it.

How very sad, but comforting, this teacher's lovingkindness and courage to gather the children close to her heart.

Are we all going to need to go regularly to gun ranges and practice marksmanship so that we can defend ourselves at the gas station? Do we need a possee to go to the mall or the movie theater for protection? Is this really what we want?

Maybe if the leftist judges and legislators dealt some real punishment, things would change. Now go back to burying your head in the sand like a good progressive liberal.

The gun manufactures and the NRA!! So why would they support getting rid of assault riffles? They wouldn't, these tradegies as horrible as the are only increases gun sales, so why wouldn't the NRA want EVERY crazy person in the country to shot up a school or a mall or a church? The NRA wants this to happen weekly maybe even daily so that guns sales go through the roof!
