An after-school basketball coach was arrested for trying to get a teenage boy to perform in pornographic videos, authorities in Florida said Tuesday.
Michael Frank Barberan, 41, faces charges of procuring a person under 18 for prostitution and exposing a minor to harmful motion pictures, exhibitions, shows, presentations or representatives.
Authorities said Barberan met the boy on Facebook. The boy was a basketball player at a local school and Barberan runs a basketball camp, South Miami Police said.

Over time, Barberan would pick the boy up after school and take him to parks to play basketball, authorities said.
At some point, Barberan began to talk to the boy about sex and told him he was an escort, authorities said.
Barberan told the the boy he could make extra money by filming him in pornographic videos with another man, which could be sold, authorities said.
Police said Barberan admitted to authorities that he offered the boy a way to make extra money by performing sexual acts.

Why you pick on Florida? There are 49 other states and territories that have the same problems. Your deductions seem a little bias. What happens in your state? Or do you live in lala land? AKA state of euphoria!

I really don't know about Germany. But Florida does seem to have more than its share of bizarre, stupid crimes.

Here in Seattle, we have a morning radio show with Danny Bonoduce. And they do a daily - what's wrong with Florida - skit. I listen to it on my way to work. It's pretty sad that they have a horrible (and strange) story about Florida every single day.
Same Florida that was there 35 years ago just more people sticking their heads in the sand!

Actually, Florida is a beautiful state. Just like any state, they all have the ghetto area's and crime. The reason we hear about Florida this that and the other thing is that FL is always moving due to the nicer weather and there's always something going on down there.
Other states are somewhat boring and there isn't a whole helluva lot going on. It's colder and they are usually more indoors than outdoors.
Now, I'm probably going to get some people say the opposite but we all have opinions just as we all have @!$%#s. ;-)

I am terrified for my children. It seems you can't trust anyone these days and further validates my decision to not let them on Facebook.
It's sad that people that truly want to help children are now afraid to do so because of all the sick perverts that have come before. Unfortunately, it's all too common these days for children to bear the brunt and cost of adult selfishness.

The article is poorly written. Was Barberan asking the kid to be filmed or do the filming? Both highly inappropriate and illegal, but one option involves the possibility of statutory rape.

If the writing makes an important factor in the crime unclear, then yes, it should be edited and proofread. This is a professional news site, not some amateur blog. We are not a group of friends hanging out, and I'm correcting grammar in a social setting.
I'm so sorry if my expectation of accurate reporting and appropriate grammar from an individual who writes for a living is offensive to you. Perhaps I will adopt your attitude and just say, "eh, close enough" when it comes to getting information from news reporters. Seems more likely that the article was poorly read, rather than poorly written. It's very clear that "coach" was importuning the kid to participate as an "actor" in pornographic movies. admitting that he, the "coach" was working as a male escort - was his way of trying to make it sound legitimate. These deviant athletic coaches are work as hard as scouts for Porn as they do for athletic prospects.
Its getting harder and harder for decent men to volunteer their time to mentor at risk boys... who lack a male role model at home.
This goes a long way toward explaining why single mothers are unable to trust anyone to teach their sons how to grow up to be decent Men.

The article is not clear on that point. The sentence where the filming of a video is mentioned only uses pronouns and could be interpreted either way. The reporter has a responsibility to avoid such ambiguity. Can a meaning be inferred? Sure. But a news article should not expect the reader to draw their own conclusions; it should state the facts clearly.
Also, I don't know if announcing that he is a prostitute is a great selling point or that it makes anything legitimate.
Where in the article does it say that the teen doesn't have a strong male role model in his life? Where does it mention his parents at all? Clearly, he did not take the coach up on the offer and reported him, so the teen wasn't easily seduced by him. Most single mothers teach their own sons how to be decent men just fine. They don't need to rely on strangers for that task.
Why do people need to protect their sons because of gay relationships becoming legal? "Look out, it's a monogamous couple!"

There are two kinds of coaches: Those who teach the kids how to compete honorably, following the rules, self discipline, teamwork, how to win gracefully and how to lose gracefully. Then there are the sicko perverts who teach the kids nothing, except a sick way to spend the rest of their lives in shame and grief. There should be serious background checks done on anybody who applies for a coaching position, including going back to the schools they come from and interviewing people who have associated with them. It is easy for these pervs to avoid detection if they have never been caught/arrested.

Is it just me, or do we see a high percentage of these child molesters being either coaches (aka Sandusky) or teachers (aka Deb LaFave). Do these people pick those careers so they can be close to children? I am not condemning the vast majority of educators and coaches who have a positive influence on our children, but it is nonetheless disturbing.

I found out that a scumbag 20 something year old 'friend' of the family made a move on my just teenage son. Had hard evidence via Facebook messages. I printed them and went to the police. Their response....well if she were a teacher of police officer they would bring her in for questioning. So the Hollywood police did NOTHING to this pedophile! Couldn't even get past reception area to speak with a detective.

Sad the coach has to be a perv. I had coaches through my younger days that inspired me and helped me become a decent person and outstanding athlete during the turbulent 60's.
