The men and women who first arrived at Sandy Hook Elementary School tells TODAY's Erica Hill that "this is something that is going to take us a long time to work through."
NEWTOWN, Conn. – Emergency medical services responders in this “volunteer town” were having an ordinary day on Friday, getting ready to go Christmas shopping, waiting in line at the post office or hanging out at home on the crisp fall morning when the call came in: Their skills were needed at Sandy Hook Elementary.
More than 20 members of the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and two of its rigs rushed to the scene of what was first described simply as a “shooting in the building,” but quickly escalated to reports of a gunman -- or possibly two -- at large on the school grounds and gunfire, lots of gunfire.
They quickly set up primary and secondary triage sites, preparing to receive the wounded. But as other ambulances from neighboring communities rolled up, sirens blaring, the first responders slowly realized that their training would be tragically underutilized on this horrible day.
Only a few of the wounded were brought out for stabilizing treatment and then whisked off to the hospital. Everyone else among the 20 children and six adults who were shot had been killed by what turned out to be a single gunman – now identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, who committed suicide at the end of the rampage.
“We're waiting there with a triage area set up to take care of all of these patients ... and when the call came over the radio to release all of these ambulances from surrounding towns and just hold the Newtown ambulances at the scene, that was when I think it hit most of us that our services were not going to be utilized at that point,” James Wolff, a 44-year-old EMT who responded to the mass shooting, told NBC News on Wednesday.
“Seeing the faces on the other side of the (police) scene tape and the emotion on those faces was, it was difficult to see and especially because we weren't in action doing things trying to save people,” said Wolff, a father of two who joined the town’s volunteer ambulance company 18 months ago. “You may not be able to save everybody, but you damn well try. And when (we) didn't have the opportunity to put our skills into action, it's difficult.”
But Assistant Chief Sharon McCarthy said the first responders found other ways to contribute.
“You feel helpless, I think, but yet we were there,” said McCarthy, who spent six hours at the scene and was the last member of her team to leave. “Police are there, the parents are there. We're trying to help them and reassuring people and just trying to be there. I mean, you know, the parents were victims, too.”
Many of the first responders to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday say they will never forget what they saw. Said one: "This is forever in our memory bank." NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.
“There was an anxious, chaotic crowd and we were trying to keep peace there,” she added. “It was really controlling the scene was what we were working on.”
Laurie Veillette, a volunteer EMT who was leaving the post office when she saw the police cars zoom by moments before receiving the call to duty, said she was assigned to the secondary triage area in the parking lot of the nearby fire station, where unharmed schoolchildren who were evacuated waited to be picked up by their parents.
“We were there while events were still unfolding and we received patients and left,” she said. “I got a text from my daughter on the ambulance on the way back and she said people were saying, 'People are dying there mommy, are you all right?' ... She asked me if I was there and I said, 'I am.' And I said, 'It's bad, and I can't talk about it.'”
Veillette and other EMTs at the scene weren't getting any information from radio or television, but she said they sensed the enormity of what had happened.
“To get that text from her, I knew that it had gotten bigger and it was big,” she said.
Veillette, who said she had worked in past years as a substitute teacher at Sandy Hook, said the loss of so many young children and the professionals who cared for them hit even those used to dealing with death hard.

Some of her fellow EMT workers didn't watch the news reports in the immediate aftermath, and they spoke to counselors brought in to handle the “raw emotion” that was coming out, Veillette said.
“The loss of faces in town,” she said, trying to explain the powerful impact the tragedy has had. “It's just a huge loss that touched so many people, but then again, you know, it brought us together. … it's such a mixed emotion. I mean I feel such love and support but at the same time, our community is missing too many people right now.”
Jill Urciuoli, a 58-year-old EMT who also responded that day, said she had spent some time “just trying to figure out what happened, rework everything, see if there was a way I could have done something differently.”
But then she surrendered to the strong emotions coursing through this tight-knit community.
“Grief is grief,” she said. “Everybody feels it. Everybody's heart is ripped out. You don't even need to see it, you feel it ... it hurts.”
McCarthy said that even before the tragedy, a medical call was handled with a small-town approach by the 69-member EMT team, who range in age from 18 to 72. When EMTs had to transport people to the hospital, patients would often hold their hands or pinch their cheeks. And if reassurance was all that was needed, McCarthy said she had occasionally brewed tea and sat down to comfort a nervous resident.
She called the job the second-most challenging and rewarding thing she has done, after parenthood. “This group of people has more heart than you can imagine,” she said.

Mike Collins, a volunteer since 2005, proudly called Newtown a "volunteer town," with five volunteer fire departments in service, too.
As he stood in the ambulance bay at the corps' post on Main St. -- where a sign posted outside reads, "Still united, we are Newtown strong!" -- Wolff said the shootings have already had a “rippling” effect, noting that his children, a son, 12, and daughter, 15, were openly worrying about him and his wife, who is a teacher in another school district.
“Our kids are now thinking, 'OK, what happens to mom, what happens to dad when they go do what they do," he said, noting that his daughter had pleaded in a text message on Friday after she heard about the shootings, "Daddy don't go."
Wolff also responded later Friday to the home of the alleged shooter's mother, Nancy Lanza, located on a normally quiet residential street that was then flooded with police cruisers, the FBI and the media, among others. Police suspect Nancy was also shot to death by her son at the beginning of the still-unexplained massacre.
Wolff said he arrived in disbelief at the scene, and said the community was just beginning to process what happened.
“We just can't even imagine the long-term feelings and implications,” he said, adding that someone told him this was “Newtown's 9/11. It's kind of on that order of magnitude, for a smaller number of people.”
"This is something that is going to take us a long time to work through. It's all still very raw right now," he said. "But … we are a strong community, we have come together. I think we'll continue to come together and support each other."

I have a relative who is a first responder, and he has seen some pretty horrific things in the last 30 or more years, but I doubt any of that could have prepared him for this hellish nightmare, where even the opportunity to save lives was so completely diminished by the thoroughness of the murderer, who must have wanted to ensure there were no survivors at all. Nobody should have to experience the complete sense of impotence and rage they must have felt after being told to pretty much stand down, and knowing that the body count was so high, and involved mostly children. I don't think I would be able to cope with it without some kind of counseling.
What horrifies me most in some ways is how high this guy's kill rate was. I realize he was trained in target shooting, but I grew up among hunters. To have just two wounded adults survive and no wounded children tells me that his ammo was particularly destructive. Whatever he was using must have torn their bodies to pieces. It is very rare that we hear of a mass shooting where the kills outnumber the wounded - shooting people with any precision is actually kind of hard, and even if someone is hit in a vital organ, their odds of survival are decent if help comes quickly enough - with normal bullets. These were clearly more destructive than the average bullet.
(I wonder how the NRA will bill such bullets as "vital" to our 2nd Amendment freedoms.)
I cannot imagine how helpless the first responders must have felt and how devastating it must have been for them and the survivors.

The victims were shot between 3-9 times each. There were 4 empty mags of .40 cal found in the school, so that's 40 rounds right there, plus the mags in the pistols is another 20 rounds, and probably loaded with personal defense rounds which cause maxium destruction. The AR has a 30 round mag. No reports I've seen say how many AR Mags were found. More than one was most likely used. They were all sitting ducks. They had no way to defend themselves because they were abiding by the law. I have no doubt that one of those teachers or administrators would have done something if they had a means of defending against an armed inturder. Even a few police officers stationed at the school could have stopped it. Schools are an easy target because the crazies know that no one will be able to defend against them. Have you ever heard of a mass shooting at a gun show or gun store? How about a shooting competition? No, the answer is no, because no one in any mindset would even try, because there would be people to fight back.
These aren't soft targets. Even if every person there was unarmed, they aren't soft targets. The power fantasy these killers have makes them target soft targets. That means schools, shopping malls, restaurants, and any place families are likely to gather. Gun shows and shops aren't a traditional family event. They're a white male event.

That's a very racist comment. I have been to 100's of gun shows, and there are just as many black people there as white. There are asians and hispanics too. Even middle easterners. There are also tons of women at the shows. You should visit a few so you can have some actual intellegence on the subject.
I have. I'm generalizing. There aren't a lot of kids there. There aren't a lot of women there. As compared to, say, a restaurant, shopping mall, or school. And I also don't think you ought to be so sensitive. Caucasians still represent the majority race in the US. It's not racist to say that they are the majority who attend gun shows.
I think most of the stories on Sandy states that the shooter used an AR-15 for the killings and shot each several times. So even though a .223 can be a very damaging ammo as any other ammo, mulitiple shots I think is why the amount of survivals were so low. As a Veteran with a tour in Iraq the .556 and .223 are small compared to the 7.62 AK47 ammo but what makes this wartime ammo so dangerous is the fact that it tumbles more then it really spins as in typical ammo. Plus these are mostly combat rounds which means, most of the .223 and .556 rounds are full metal jackets and not lead like typical hunting rounds

White people according to the US Census Buerau make up 70% of the population. That includes hispanics as they are not identified as a race. I wouldn't have had a problem with your comment if you had said it was a majority white male event. Instead you make it out to sound like gun shows are only for white people. I don't know what part of the country you live in, but in here in the south the gun shows are near civic centers, mass transit, and fair grounds, which typically are in or on the outskirts of predominately black neighborhoods. I see more than a just the token black person at the gun shows.

Up here in the north, they are held in civic centers deep in the semi-rural and rural areas. No mass transit and it's a 100:1 white male event. But I've only been to two and I wasn't exactly taking a census.
Some people tried on doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. Albert Einstein was correct on that. People keep pounding on gun control, but in this instance, no amount of gun control would have stop this nutcase. If that school had an effective security in place, students and faculty could have been saved. Let's not play politics here -with our children's safety. We need a security that is second to none at our schools now! The children need the best protection that we can provide.

usnret08 is correct, the 5.56 Nato when fired from the Stoner design, M-16/M-16A1 and variants, such as the AR-15 does have a different characteristic from most other rounds. I was a Armorer in the US Army shortly after the M-16 was adopted, this was one of the things we learned. In previous individual weapons, such as the M-1 Rifle, M-1 Carbine, which used the .30 cal and .30 cal carbine round until the later production, and the M-14 which along with the last M1A3 rifles which a few used the 7.62 Nato, which is slightly shorter, the projectile spins through the target, along the entire trajectory, unless interrupted. Whereas, the 5.56 Nato, spins until striking the target, then tumbles end over end, offsetting the effect of the heavier round, creating a similar trama. There are some other characteristics, but we won't get into that, here. The .30 cal rifle is the civilian counterpart of the 30.06, the .30 cal carbine is the same as civilian, the 7.62 Nato is the .308, and 5.56 Nato is the .223, all common ammunition, in many variants.
I also have been to 100 gun shows. Excuse me, how are you? That was my first gun dad gave me, and on and on. The most polite and downright friendly atmosphere anywhere! Met some great "friends" told and heard great stories. There are more rude and offensive people at stores and even churches for that matter. Quit painting gun owners as psycho right wing extremists we are the best friend you never had.

The aftermath of the Newtown school massacre is beginning to resemble the 9-11 false flag.
The local police dispatch tape carries a report that a teacher saw two shooters running away from the scene. (3.25)
According to George Freund, “First officers in the school report the patsy dead. He may very well have been killed by the two fleeing men who were probably the whack team.
“Police also report finding a shotgun. How do you carry a rifle, a shotgun, two pistols, and all sorts of ammo with two hands and kill so many people. You are obviously NOT alone.
“There were two escaping persons. The police appear to confront them. There is someone taken into custody. The alleged shooter is found dead. The police supervisor says the ‘DRILL’ word corresponding to the princpal’s tweet of a drill. “
The presence of other shooters may explain why the killer, Adam Lanza, 20, was wearing a mask, flack jacket and military fatigues. This is so he couldn’t be distinguished from the other shooters. If he had intended to kill himself, he wouldn’t have needed a disguise.
As with 9-11, when Osama Bin Laden was blamed immediately, the culprit this time was guns. A chorus of calls for gun control went up from Barack Obama and his Illuminati Jewish handlers like Mayor Bloomberg of NY.
Illuminati Jewish mouthpieces like Huffpost are going ballistic.
Mind control. Mass hypnosis. Operant conditioning. Brain entrainment. That’s what we’re talking about here.
We’re so conditioned to how television covers life that we rarely step back and take notice.
In the case of massive disasters and crimes, network news rules the roost.
First, the premiere anchors, who are managing editors of their own broadcasts, give themselves the go signal. They will leave their comfortable chairs and travel to the scene of crime. “It’s that big.”
The anchors lend gravitas. Their mere presence lets the audience know this story trumps all other news of the moment. That’s the first hypnotic cue and suggestion.
Of course, the anchors were not in Newtown, Connecticut, as reporters. They weren’t there to dig up facts. Their physical presence at the Sandy Hook School and in the town was utterly irrelevant.
They could have been doing their newscasts from their studios in New York. Or from a broom closet.
But much better to be standing somewhere in Newtown. It imparts the sense of crisis to the viewing millions.
At the same time, the anchors are also there to give assurance. The subliminal message they transmit is: whatever has happened here is controllable.
The audience knows the anchors will provide the meaning and the official voice of the tragedy. The anchors are, in a way, priests, intoning their benediction to the suffering and their elegies to the dead.
This is what the audience expects, and this is what they get.
This expectation, in fact, is so deep that anything else would be considered an insult, a moral crime.
For example, suppose a network suddenly shifted gears and began interviewing police and residents and asking tough questions about contradictions in the official scenario. Suppose that became the primary focus. Suppose the tone became argumentative, in the interest of, God forbid, the truth.
In other words, in a jarring shift of perspective, the anchors began asking questions to seek answers. What a concept.
No, a priest doesn’t browbeat a parishioner. He takes confession and then offers a route to redemption.
But if, by some miracle, these anchors launched a quest for truth, the whole scene would devolve into uncertainty and even chaos.
“First, there was a man in the woods. You people chased him. You pinned him down and brought him back into town. Who is he? What’s his name? Where is he? Is he under questioning? What are you asking him? What gave you a clue that he might be a second shooter? Come on. Talk to us. People want to know. We aren’t going anywhere. We want some answers.”
This is called reporting, a foreign enterprise to these blown-dried kings and queens of media news.
“Sir, I know ABC definitively reported there was a second shooter. They said you gave them that information. Where did you get it?…No, I’m sorry, that’s not an answer, that’s a non-sequitur.”
Those of us reporting online declare there is something amiss when the second-shooter story is dropped like a hot potato…and we are called conspiracy theorists.
Get it? Trying to ask relevant questions becomes conspiracy only because the major media didn’t do their job in the first place.
“Sir, was it one gun found in trunk of the car or three? Show me the car. Yes. Let’s see it. I want to get the license plate. Excuse me? The car is what, some kind of state secret? I don’t think so. There are twenty dead children in that school over there, and we want to get to the bottom of this. Take me to the car.”
It’s called an investigation. Reporters do that.
“Sir, your newspaper ran a story about a man’s body being found in Adam’s brother’s apartment. Then that became Adam’s mother found dead in her own house here in Newtown. What exactly happened there? A mistake? Wouldn’t you say that was a pretty big mistake? How did it happen? What’s that? Typical confusion in the early reporting of a crime? I don’t think so. Thinking a woman was a man and thinking he or she was found in New Jersey instead of Connecticut, that’s not typical at all. Did police find a man’s body. Speak up.”
Your typical American television viewer would cringe at such demanding questions. You know why? Because he has been entrained and conditioned by news anchors to refrain from digging below the surface. In other words, that viewer is hypnotized.
“Dr. Smith and Officer Jones, we understand that this boy, who was autistic, extremely shy, who had some sort of personality disorder, went into that school and methodically carried out the slaughter of twenty-seven people. In order for him to do that, he had to reload clips at least twice after the first clip ran out. Does that make sense? We’re not just talking about a violent outburst here, we’re talking about a methodical massacre. How do you explain that?”
If these anchors kept on asking questions like this, do you know what would happen? The viewing audience would begin to stir, would begin to break through their hypnotic programming and wake up.
“You know, he’s right. That doesn’t make sense. Maybe there really was a second shooter.”
“Or that Lanza kid…maybe he didn’t kill anybody at all.”
“What? You mean he was…set up?”
“Maybe he was a patsy.”
Yes. Instead of this kind of talk being consigned to “conspiracy nuts,” it actually becomes part of the evening news experience. Because reporters suddenly ask tough questions.
But no. We have to go with grief and shock. We have to lead with it and stay with it.
But that is an artificial construct. Yes, of course people in Newtown feel great shock and pain and loss and grief and horror, but the news producers are consciously moving minutes and hours of it through the tube and filtering out everything else.
They do this every time one of these events occurs, and so the audience expects it and soaks it in and, in that state of entrainment and hypnosis, the audience doesn’t want anything else…because anything else would BREAK THE FLOW and the spell, and the grief would no longer have the same impact.
Newtown is presented as a television event. From the outset, the mood is funereal. It has that tinge and coloration. The audience absorbs it and wants no intrusion on it.
This is Matrix programming.
The anchor is not only the priest, but also the teacher. He/she shows the audience how to experience the event and what to feel and what to think and how to act.
One of the great skills of an anchor is the ability to present the news seamlessly. This is what those big paychecks are for: the blends and segueways and the underlying tone of sincerity that bleeds into every detail of what is being reported.
That is also hypnotic. It sets up a frequency that moves into the brains of the audience. In those brains, it’s an Acceptance-frequency. It’s the mark of a great news anchor, to be able to transmit that and achieve it.
Scott Pelley (CBS) has only some of that. Diane Sawyer (ABC) is decidedly inconsistent in her ability to deploy it. Brian Williams (NBC) is the contemporary master. That’s why he’s been called the Walter Cronkite of the 21st century.
“Sir, we have a report that police pinned a second man on the ground just outside the school. What is his name? What did you do with him? Where is he now.”
No, no, no, no, no. That would crack the Acceptance-frequency like an egg and send the evening news to hell in a handbasket.
“Sir, I’m glad we finally located you. We understand you were getting ready to go to Bermuda. Now, you were Adam Lanza’s doctor. What drugs did you prescribe him? Not just recently, but going all the way back to the beginning. You see, we’ve compiled a list of possible drugs for Asperger’s and autism and depression, and of course we see that they do, in fact, induce violent behavior. Suicide, homicide. Speak up, Doctor.”
The egg not only cracks in that case, the news anchor is suspended the next day, and the network releases a statement that his “breakdown” on camera was brought on by stress.
Pharmaceutical companies put him on their “to-do” list.
Yet, the questions about the drugs are exactly what a real reporter would ask. Not a “conspiracy theorist.” A reporter, on the scene in Newtown.
Anyone who thinks that is absurd and out of bounds is hypnotized, programmed. That’s all there is to it.
Traditional media are dying in this country. Their money is drying up. They could revitalize themselves in a New York minute if they really started COVERING stories and waking up their audience, but that’s not on their agenda. They would rather die.
They are the hired hands of the elites that own this country. They are the whores sent out every day by their pimps, and they know what their job is and what it isn’t.
The direction of elite television news is squeezed down the path of consciously constructing artificial events, for mass consumption experienced in a state of emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual mind-control. Those reporters who venture outside that framework are labeled fringe figures on the margins.
“Lieutenant, excuse me. Hello. Brian Williams, NBC News. I was wondering: if there had been armed employees inside the school, what are the chances the killer could have been stopped before he shot all those children? You know, people who have been trained to shoot and have concealed carry permits. Strong people who could confront a murderer.”
Oh, people say, that is not a reasonable question. That’s a nutcase question. That question shouldn’t be asked. Why not? You want the real answer? Because it destroys the hypnotic frequency that is being delivered by the television networks. That’s the real answer.
The viewer: “Don’t bother me, I’m hypnotized. Don’t interrupt the frequency my brain is absorbing while I’m watching the news.”

GetMeOutAlive, let's not get the cart ahead of the horse. This will be completely investigated. Was there a conspiracy? Was there not? That will become obvious in ballistic testing. They will collect the projectiles, and the cartridge casings, and compare the marks left by rifling, the firing pin marks, the extractor marks on the casing rim, and and distinguishable markings left on the spent cartridge casings, then match this data to test fires of weapons in evidence. Every firearm has it's own 'fingerprint'. From this the forensic data will be able to establish exactly what weapon was, or was not used. Until then we should let the investigators do their work, before creating unfounded rumors.
If it was left up to Newsviners, sounds like a whole lot of nothing would be done. Because the gun lusters can't talk to the gun haters about using brains to solve a problem rather than yelling.

It's been shot dead, worse than the Sikh temple shooting, Benghazi, or Aurora, please take the time to go through what is here, it is EXTREMELY important, it's all new, up until the headline THE END. I did not need to do a huge investigation of this to totally wipe it clean. The best stuff is toward the end, farther down the page but it's all good, including the stuff at the beginning.

"Jim, it's Paul from your forum. This school shooting has pro attack written all over it. The ratio of dead to wounded is way off. 27 or 28 killed and media is not reporting how many others injured. Infowars commenters say from 8-12, but I can't verify those numbers.

Paul came up with a clue, for anyone who does not realize this yet - Any time you get new twitter accounts rattling off for a gun ban, the entire thing is a setup. The reason why is because people tend to be proud of who they are on places like twitter, and they will keep their current accounts and blab and brag about how great they are because they hate guns. No one genuine would have shown up new on twitter with a new account over this.
I did not check yet, but I'd bet that every one of those kids also now has a facebook page in their honor, another key indicator of a government hit job.

I just found out in the Youtube comments that a map of the region which had the Sandy Hook elementary school was used in the bat man movie that was playing in Aurora during that other "shooting" so I googled it. This region, which contains the Sandy Hook elementary school was used as a map to represent a portion of the city of Gotham during a setup of one of the bad guy's dirty deeds in that movie. I think most of the stories on Sandy states that the shooter used an AR-15 for the killings and shot each several times. So even though a .223 can be a very damaging ammo as any other ammo, mulitiple shots I think is why the amount of survivals were so low. As a Veteran with a tour in Iraq the .556 and .223 are small compared to the 7.62 AK47 ammo but what makes this wartime ammo so dangerous is the fact that it tumbles more then it really spins as in typical ammo. Plus these are mostly combat rounds which means, most of the .223 and .556 rounds are full metal jackets and not lead like typical hunting rounds
Ok I don't know how long you were in the Military, but you obviously didn't have much weapons training. A n AR-15 as you lable them uses a 7.62 round that is simular to the AK 47, now if you mean a 5.56 round, now remember I said 5 point 56 that is a big differance since that is a pistol round. Now a AR-15 can use a 5.56 round, but it will cause it to over heat.

Taharrington, first thank you for your service, but USNRET is right, the AR-15 fires 0.223cal, not NATO 7.26mm (you may be thinking the M14?). Believe me, you can't fit a 7.62mm round into an AR mag, and certainly won't chamber. You are correct the AR can fire the 5.56mm because it is effectively the exact same dimensions as the 0.223cal but does create intense chamber pressure. It's better to fire a 0.223 through a 5.56-chambered rifle than other way around.
Also I'm sure you know this, but just to reiterate the caliber of a round indicates the diameter of the bullet, not what type of weapon fires it. In America we use inches so the 0.223 is effectively 22/100ths, or about 1/4 of an inch wide. The rest of the world is on metric so they indicate bullet size by millimeters. So saying "5.56mm is a pistol round" is senseless. I highly doubt you could fit a 5.56x45mm NATO round in a pistol clip :)

The AR-15 most assuredly fires a 5.56mm or .223 cal round. The main difference between the NATO 5.56mm round and the Remington .223 round is casing thickness. The NATO 5.56mm has a thicker casing to withstand higher pressures. The shooter, reportedly, used a Bushmaster .223. Bushmaster does in
fact make a model that fires a 7.62 or .30 cal round. It's in the XM-15 family. They also make a 6.8mm SPC variant. I'm pretty sure you need an FFL to legally purchase either of those variants. I
could be mistaken about the FFL. They also make a 9mm variant in their Carbon 15 family.
Now there are 5.56mm pistols, and Bushmaster does in fact make one of those, also in the Carbon 15 family. But I promise you the news would have been all over that, because 5.56mm pistols generally look pretty odd.
Overheating is not a problem with the AR-15/ M-4/ M-16 firing the standard 5.56 mm ball round. This is a magazine fed, gas operated, air cooled, shoulder fired, firearm. Over lubrication and dirt are the leading
causes of malfunction, NOT heat. If it were belt fed heat might be a problem.
Full metal jacket rounds are also made from lead. The projectile consists of a soft core, generally made of lead, with a hard metal outer "jacket". This allows for greater muzzle velocity which leads to penetrating power. Yes they do tumble or ricochet upon impact because they are travelling upwards of 3000 feet
per second. Hollow points and non-jacketed ammunition doesn't travel as far because of expansion but does significantly more damage to the target.

There is a pic. above that shows 2 men with badges carrying AR 15's . Has been said that there was well over a hundred AR15's at an around the scene after the crime . So 1 AR15 on scene 28 people die. Over a 100 AR15's on scene and no gets a scratch.

I had to control my urge to panic when I saw a guy laying in the street after being hit by a car. I don't know what I would have done seeing a scene like that in Sandy Brook. Especially now that I'm a father.

I'm having trouble researching the induction of violent actions in psych drugs, at least of the type we're talking about. I read through journal articles instead of anecdotes on the internet. I think any medication must be an option that is weighed carefully, but I suspect I'm also in the minority there.
I would also like to add that the answers are not gun control or video game control. Many of the answers are found in the morals of people. Theses started changing when god was taken out of the schools, the massive rise in kids getting abortions, drugging todays society to name a few. I believe there is a need for abortions but many kids have they oh well mind set. How does one explain to a little kid when someone they know gets and abortion..oh well getting pregnant was a mistake. This kid then can grow up thinking it's ok to take life when a mistake is made. Oh I know life doesn't begin till someone takes a breath....well so many say...but a child/toddler does not understand these things.

I would have to disagree for many reasons. God being present in schools has nothing to do with the social morals. Shooting rampages used to occur even when God was present in the schools. Traditionally the role of moral upbringing has fallen on the parents. But thanks to the changing economics of our nation, a single income is no longer possible. A kid gets out of school and is raised by an after school program or worse, television. There is also a difference in attitude. It used to be "boys will be boys" and if a teenage girl got herself pregnant, parents raised the child as their own and the child was called a "little sister" to her biological mother. Silence was favored instead of truth. Then it was up to the kid, when they grew up, to find out the truth, and cope with it themselves.
Everyone I know who has ever gotten an abortion has been utterly devastated by the event. They know when their kid was supposed to be born and remember for the rest of their lives.
You need to do much research from info produced outside of this country, trust it's out there. Just even look at the number of suicides atributed to Prozac..that's pretty easy. It is illegal to sue gunmakers. Wrongdoing should be decided by a court of law on a case-by-case basis. They currently enjoy a blanket immunity from civil and criminal suits, the only industry that has such protection. And guns are the only product you can buy that are not regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission which is why they will never become less dangerous. A technology such as grip pattern recognition or biometric identification would have prevented this incident and countless others where a child finds a gun and shoots somebody. Regulation could mandate these technologies on new firearms and make the product safer.

Lanza went shooting with his mother, so a grip recognition wouldn't have stopped it. He would have had his prints recognized by those firearms. A cheaper solution and one that I think even gun owners would go for is requiring a safe in the home. That alone would cut down on accidental shootings where kids find the guns just sitting on a shelf or in a drawer.

I was under the impression that this was a standard practice for a responsible gun owner. Every gun owner I know has one and keeps their arms unloaded and secure in it. And despite my comments, I do happen to agree with you. However, there's no certainty that a safe would have prevented this either. The safe may not have been utilized, or Adam Lanza could have had the unlock code or stolen the key. Sadly, you can't fix stupid, and even if every firearm owner were required to purchase a safe, some would purchase the cheapest POS they could get and never utilize it.

I agree with you that having a safe should be standard practice, but there are hundreds of thousads of people that don't. They stuff guns under a matress, or on a shelf, leave them on a night stand, even hang them on the wall. My self I have a couple Fort Knox Legend Series safes for my guns and ammo. They have biometric and numeric locks. I also have in wall safes on either side of the master bed the house a 12 gauage, 25 rounds of 12 gauge defense ammo, and .45 cal pistol. I also have an office by our front door that I keep a 1911 in a pistol safe that's been bolted to the desk. I am what you call a responsible gun owner. I take my family's safety seriously, but I also take owning firearms seriously.

Judging by your statement I will assume you don't own firearms. I will also assume you haven't been the victim of a crime. I own firearms. More than the Mrs. Lanza did. I have also drawn my firearm in self-defense from an attempted robbery/Carjacking. Do you know what a good defense is agianst a person with a brick ready to smash your head? The 1911 I carry everyday that I put right in his face. It took the police 10 minutes to get there while I held the guy at gun point. He was begging me to let him go because he was on probation and his mom was going to be so mad at him. He was 17 years old. He's now in prison for 15 years for his attempted carjacking with a deadly weapon, probation violation, attempted armed robbery, and felon in possession of a deadly weapon.

I hate the thought of having principals in schools armed, but I think it has come to that in this country. The semi-automatic guns are so wide spread that even if you stop selling them, people have to protect themselves somehow from the ones still out there. The school had the security system and he got in anyway after blasting the glass and being able to get through the door. In just my own opinion, I think this calls for an electrical wiring tie in to 911 when doors that are locked with these systems do not open using a particular pin code. The doors could be coded to signal an automatic alarm just like fire alarm systems. The 911 system would know to automatically send police just like the fire trucks when alarms are intentionally or accidently pulled. The police would have to respond just like any other 911 call. Also, this could be wired into an automatic PA system that would broadcast across the school that there is now a lockdown situation so all teachers automatically lock their doors and go into survival mode for themselves and their students. When this happens, if the principal is armed he or she can use their own weapon on the intruder in self-defense of themselves and everyone in the building. This would require mandatory training for principals to handle their weapons and they would have to re-new every year so police would also know which schools are armed. Just to remove semi-automatic guns with multiple rounds of gun fire doesn't solve the problem. Solutions need to be thought of and implemented to reduce the risk to as many people as possible. The people that would commit these horrific acts of violence and evil have to be outsmarted by over compensating for the safety of all the students and staff. Yes, these measures will require monetary funds, but preventing another one of these tragedies from ever happen has to be priority for everyone. Our country cannot be seen as a third world country for gun violence that kills the most vulnerable and innocent. As the country is always watching and trying to predict what a terrorist would think and do, we also have to be a step ahead of those with these semi-automatic guns that put out bullets at a rapid fire pace. Lets learn from this tragedy and do whatever it takes to prevent another one. This entire evil incident calls for more gun control on semi-automatics, everyone should have a waiting period and background check before being allowed to purchase at gun shows, more mental healthcare which means bring back the mental hospitals with the required level of staffing. Treat mental health costs like other doctor visits with low copays and fees so everyone can afford it if needed. Also monitor very closely people put on anti-depressants and other mind altering drugs until they are stable. Not every drug is safe by type or dosage and doctors prescribe and then patients are not monitored for side effects. Not saying this is any fault by doctors, but their are people that should be hospitalized when starting medications that have mind altering side effects. Many of these drugs help thousands everyday, but there are always some people that have very violent side effects with these medications. In this instance, the Principal or other school administrator would have had time to set up, take aim and shoot this guy when he was climbing through the hole in the door. Some are instantaneous and catch you off guard, but this time they might have been able to shoot him as they knew he was there and coming.

As a former Army medic I was taught to "never lose control." yet as I sit here typing this I am shaking and nervous just remembering some of the things I have seen. You are taught when everything else around you is going to hell- you are the rock you have to be, but at the same time be compasionate, but firm. My sgt told us "god can't save them all and you are not god either so don't try." This sounds like words of wisdom. what it leaves is a lot of room for the could've should've would've to slip in. These first responders had to do the same thing, look a surviving child in the face and say your ok ,your going to be ok. and listen to the parents screaming for their child. I'm sorry for the loss of your father to gun violence. It's not what firearms were invented for. You are mistaken that Lanza wouldn't have been able to inflict as much harm had he not Stolen an AR-15. I assume that's the weapon you are talking about. I'm a advanced shooter. I competition shoot. I attend simulated scenario's classes. I've done training with a friend that's a former SEAL Sniper. Lanza could have done the same amount of damage with shotgun and the two handguns. From articles I've seen he fired at a minimum of 40 rounds from the handguns as there were 4 .40 cal mags on the floor. Those generally hold 10 rounds of ammo. It only takes about a second or two to change the mags out. We also don't know exactly how many rounds were fired and what kind of ammo he had. If he had FMJ rounds then those have a better tendancy to pass thru their target, where hollow points fragment inside a target and cause more internal damage. Hollow points are used by police departments and the majority of people that carry a concealed wepon as it's considered a personal defense round. I don't know of anyone blaming the President for this violent act. They just don't want the President to trample on our rights as Americans to protect ourselves as it is gauaranteed by law.

I would like to know if anyone thinks that it is kind of insane for a mother to teach a mentally unstable person to use assault weapons, and to keep these weapons at the house. It's like drinking and driving don't mix? How about someone you know who is mentally ill most of his life and you hand them an assault weapon? What was she thinking? We as Americans need to always remember the few good things (although they are so few) that came from this and all of the Heros, from the teachers who stood on the front line like soldiers in battle to protect these kids and the police and fire who lived through something I could never imagine but remembered to tell the small survivors to cover their eyes, in an attempt to shield them from what had really happened. We also must forget about the person who is responsible, as his name is not worth mentioning and the greatest punishment we are left to give is to take away the fame which I am sure he sought.

I really want the police and coroner to come out with the facts and truth. What fired brass was found at the scene, name it. 223, 10mm or 9mm. How many shots were fired, in fact. We do not need to know where each victim was hit, multi hits will do major damage. But the truth on what he shot and how many times would most likely clear up or even stop all the rumor of what he used. His crimes are burglary and murder and theft of a firearm.. I totally agree with Planet Noob's comments. The government has to do more about the FDA which is an independent agency by the way. This should be a mandatory report every month so the FDA can make decisions based on data. There needs to be data driven decisions on use of anti-depressants and mind altering drugs that make people violent. We are not using the data that is there and this will continue unless someone starts taking responsibility, analyzes the data, and then makes a data driven decision.

Wrong again Blue. In CT you need to have an FID card to purchase a firearm(rifle) or ammo, an a pistol permit for a hand gun. This is issued through the local police dept and is the same in MA, NJ and many other states. Heres my opinion..... First of all the president has the right to implement some form of gun control, whether it be assault weapons, etc but i don't think this is going to solve the problem. How does he rid the country of the same assault weapons that are already in possession of gun owners. Story I read a few weeks back stated that the United States was the number 1 buyer of the AK47 assault weapons. Millions of assault weapons were sold the Americans when Obama went into office because alot thought his agenda was gun control. More of these assault weapons were bought after his 2nd election. So my question is, the U.S. Government can ban all the different type of weapons that they want, but that doesn't get rid of the millions and millions of assault weapons that are currently on the streets.
I think a major problem in the United States is care and treatment for mental illness. My son who is 10 started having anger issues and we had him see a doctor, who then gave him a medication. I was and still currently against medication as it seemed to me that the quick fix was to medicate the issue and not work with the brain to train it ways to cope with issues. Long story short, first day my son took his medication he fell asleep at school. More treatment options should be made available and possibly more facilities to hold the possible dangerous ones.
Second is security in the middle schools and below. The four years my oldest son was in high school, he always spoke of the policemen that walked his hallways. I believe that a security guard trained in the use of a firearm would of been sitting in the front office that morning, so many of these young lives would of been spared. Problem is, like 9/11 peoples mind seem to shift so quickly once they here the word "increase taxes" to pay for the security.
So I ask would you be willing to pay increased taxes if it meant keeping our children safe in school. Also if a person needs a license to drive a car, why don't we require a law that requires everyone to have a 3-4 year renewal license to be able to purchase a gun.

For instance, starting in the colonial period, states enacted a variety of “safe-storage” measures to deal with the danger posed by stored gunpowder. A 1786 law went as far as prohibiting the storage of a loaded gun in any building in Boston.
But many people who defend gun rights today are more than happy to skim over the first part of the amendment in their zeal to embrace the second. (The NRA itself literally chopped off that pesky first half when it chiseled the words on the face of its old headquarters.) As a result, our modern gun-rights ideology is often unmoored from any sense of corresponding civic obligation.
Here’s a look at what the 1994 law actually did, where it failed, and whether it could be reworked to significantly reduce gun violence.
What counts as an “assault weapon”? The trouble all starts here. There’s no technical definition of an “assault weapon.” There are fully automatic weapons, which fire continuously when the trigger is held down. Those have been strictly regulated since 1934. Then there are semiautomatic weapons that reload automatically but fire only once each time the trigger is depressed. Semiautomatic pistols and rifles come in all shapes and sizes and are extremely common in the United States.
Congress didn’t want to ban all semiautomatic weapons — that would ban most guns, period. So, in crafting the 1994 ban, lawmakers mainly focused on 18 specific firearms, as well as certain military-type features on guns. Complicated flow charts laid it all out. Certain models of AR-15s and AK-47s were banned. Any semiautomatic rifle with a pistol grip and a bayonet mount was an “assault weapon.” But a semiautomatic rifle with just a pistol grip might be okay. It was complicated. And its complexity made it easy to evade.
What did the 1994 ban actually do? For the 10 years that the ban was in effect, it was illegal to manufacture the assault weapons described above for use by private citizens. The law also set a limit on high-capacity magazines — these could now carry no more than 10 bullets.
There was, however, an important exception. Any assault weapon or magazine that was manufactured before the law went into effect in 1994 was perfectly legal to own or resell. That was a huge exception: At the time, there were roughly 1.5 million assault weapons and more than 24 million high-capacity magazines in private hands.
Article above is to show folks that the 2nd Amendment can be challenged and the president has every right to limit our use and ownership of weapons, as did the 1994 ban of automatic weapons, which banned some AR-15s and most AK 47's.
So Rodney you are incorrect the president has every right to implement some sort of gun control.

Now you see, the long chain of abuses the founding fathers had just suffered were caused by the rightful king of England. They wrote the declaration of independence to explain to all mankind why they were declaring Independence.
They wrote the Bill of rights (the key 10 rights we all share) to set a basis of the constitution and lock the major rights in place so all understood.
Now the constitution was written at a time where people knew and understood a lot better then we do what a government is capable of in terms of causing harm to The People. And the Founders knew that there was no way in heck the revolution would have been possible without an armed populace.
Right in the middle of the Declaration they specifically state "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."
That is the Founders outright saying that NO Government can be trusted to always put the people first, they believe that sooner or later the revolution may need to be repeated. They specifically placed the second amendment into the Bill of Rights to ENSURE it would be safe FROM Government.
If we are going to do history lessons let's really get in there.
And now to be clear to all. I am not against regulation of the Absolute RIGHT to keep and bear arms. After all responsibilities go hand and hand with rights, if we do not take the responsibility we do not deserve the right. However any regulation must respect the INTENT of the second amendment. Here are some common sense ideas I do not feel run counter to my belief in the Second amendment, the Absolute RIGHT to keep and bear arms.
Here are my ideas for avoiding another Mass Shooting
1. No internet Gun sales. Ever! come on, if someone can not appear in person they do not need the gun.
2. Mandatory background check, criminal and mental health.
3. If you are on mind altering Pharmaceuticals, No gun for you.
4. The above should be dependent on obtaining a license to own a gun. This is done in my state already, not sure if that is just my state but, it seems really fair
5. Due to the license requirement there must be a point of redress if someone feels they were unfairly refused a license and that point of redress must not be another governmental department.
6. Those who have shown violent tendencies when 'off their meds' should be institutionalized, or 'put down'. Now this sounds terrible but, as way, way more then guns can cause mass carnage then why take the chance, a crazy / sick person will find a way to harm if they choose to.
7. Armed Police officer / retired / off duty in schools. Now this can be volunteers or low paid, call it a public service, as that is what it is.
To those who say Police would make kids feel like they are in prison, Get over it. Police exist to serve and protect, they are there for Us and our kids. There are far too many people out there who raise their kids to fear / hate police, this would be good for the kids and police / community relations.

Again more BS about guns. I have heard all week on the news how 40% OF GUNS SALES ARE DONE WITH NO CHECK ON THE INTERNET. This is utter BS. Lets say maybe 40% of all sales are done on the internet, any private gun seller, dealer or gun smith must by law ship that firearm to an FFL dealer which performs a check. Please check it out goto Gun Broker, Guns International or anysite that sells/auctions guns and check their rules for shipping. That 40% is just another talking point for the media and the politicians that have no idea what they are talking about. I also belong to several hunting and shooting sites and any sales through their classifieds are required to ship trhough an FFL dealer and I have never seen anyoneone do otherwise.
You can not even sell/ship ammo or unloaded bullets without going through an FFL holder who again performs the check through the FBI and or ATF
About the only thing you can ship without going through an FFL holder is a AR upper, this is no good without the lower assembly which must go through an FFL holder
Chris4132020, Thank you for the excellent history lesson, which i'm well aware of how our Constitution is writen, i was trying to point out Rodneyb as he quoted "The right to keep and bear arms". I was trying to inform him as so many miss is the part at the beginning of the 2nd Amendment that even the NRA themselves fail to use. He was coming out blunt by saying that the President has no right what so ever to make gun laws. (Or should say how I read his remark). But again I understand the Constitution but thanks for taking the time to try an educate me on its history.
