A 2-year-old girl was recovering in a Memphis, Tenn., hospital Thursday, a day after she was hit by a stray bullet that flew through the window of her home while she was watching cartoons.
The girl, Chrissiya Berry, was listed as stable at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital with a gunshot wound in her arm. She was initially listed in critical condition Wednesday.
"We was watching TV, and then I heard gunshots and one had come through the window and shot C.C.," Chrissiya's 6-year-old sister, Chrissy, told NBC station WMC of Memphis, using her little sister's nickname.
The bullet was one of several that flew as a fight broke out among several people Wednesday morning outside the Warren apartment complex on Clementine Road near Elvis Presley Boulevard in South Memphis, police said. At least one man was taken to Methodist North Hospital with a gunshot wound.
No arrests had been reported late Thursday.
The girls' grandfather, Henry McCracken, who watches the girls and their siblings while their mother is at work, said he heard five or six shots.
"Then I started yelling, 'Get on the floor! Get on the floor!' and they all started hollering and screaming and laying down," McCracken told WMC.

"I was trying to get to her in time," McCracken said, choking back tears. "I was too late."
News reports over the last several years reveal the area to be crime-riddled, with shootings a frequent occurrence.
A 68-year-old man was stabbed to death nearby just last Friday, according to police reports.
In 2010, the Warren apartments survived issuance of a nuisance order that could have led to its shutdown after new management took over. Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich said Thursday that she still had serious concerns about the complex.

"My office will begin the process of looking into exactly what we can do to make sure residents at this apartment complex are safe," Weirich told WMC.
McCracken said that after this latest incident, he wants to get his family out.
"I damn sure want it to be shut down," he said.
For her part, Chrissy said she was scared to play in the neighborhood.
"I want to find another house," she said.

Yeah, we need more guns. I bet this girl and her family buy into the insane "2nd Amendment" argument offered up by the NRA and the gun nutz. It's time to stop the violence in our culture -- and gun control is a good first step.

abc world news recently visited a hospital in florida. docters said all guns should be banned. their hospital deal with some 600 gunshot victims every year. that is more than the total in the united kingdom--britain over 10 years. we have strict controls.

Those who commit crimes with guns will only find another way to get them or choose another method, like explosive devices. Violent shootings and crimes can be reduced with better law enforcement and education. New York City has proved that. Instead of jumping on the bandwagon of banning guns which won't work, push authorities to see what cities, like New York, are doing to reduce violent crimes.

Section 8 housing.... welfare system needs to be retooled, so that it's not a total handout. Bring a sense of pride to these people and their community, and maybe some to the issues will disappear.
Ban these dam guns now. End of story. When corporations and business start paying living wages and benefits, then welfare would stop.

John the welfare system would stop if the lazy people on welfare would go back to school, learn a trade and find a job. But that is way beyond their intelligence and their means I guess. I knew a woman many years ago who had a young daugher who lived in Section 8 housing many years ago. Every year she had a baby - she had 8 babies from 8 different raced fathers...talk about a rainbow family...and enjoyed her housing and freebies very much. I didn't understand her mentality then and I wouldn't understand it today either. Some people are just born stupid and stay stupid I guess...... Her younger sister on the other hand, having most of the intelligence in the family, grew up, married, had only two children, and she and her husband moved far away from her sister and those problems.
People seem to love living in those projects, and hardly ever leave them. So they deserve what they get. They know their neighbors, the kids there, the violence that never ceases. Oh yes, they used to roast pigs in the dumpsters in the projects where my friend's daughter lived. What a life!

A quick google search reveals that this particular location is neither a "neighborhood", nor a "home". Is it a notorious gang-infested Section-8 welfare housing project.
The new owners are trying to reign in the crime, by building tall fences topped with razor wire, and hiring off-duty police officers as 24-hour security to patrol the complex. Everyone that comes in the front gate must produce valid photo ID, or they are denied entry. It's basically a prison.
The people that live there are the typical Barack Hussein lemmings, breeding indiscriminately and crapping out a rainbow of off-spring as a vocation. Drug dealing is a way of life there.

This is an everyday occurrence in neighborhoods that have many illegal guns. The medias pathetic attempt to sway in their direction on the 2nd amendment controversy. I am sick and tired of the medias involvement using yellow journalism to influence their readers. I do not own any guns because I live in an area that most feel safe. But, that is me and I believe everyone has a right to defend themselves should be able to carry guns, especially when you live on the border of Mexico, near open range, in the country, in a crime ridden area, near a prison, or live a lifestyle where you interact with characters who may use violence or endanger your family. You may live in a nice area and see no need to carry a weapon such as myself, but don't be naive to think your neighborhood is exempt from violent acts. Carrying a gun may not stop a rampage, but it will improve yours or others odds to survive.

I'm with you..."Inhuman" murder is what hunters commit...Let's include compound bows and the like along with that.
So for those of us that live of the land and do not live in the city are committing murder if we kill and animal and eat them for food? I am guessing you do not eat any type of meat because that animal was murdered for you to eat them

I blame society raising these kids to be mass murderers and selfish self-centered adults. Lets look at whos raising these kids with no regard for human life, no respect for anyone or anything! This is what happens when kids dont get the nourishment and love from their parents that they need to grow into productive adults. Why does it surprise us when they turn to gangs and crime and violence when they are raised by parents who dont give a damn. I was extremely poor raising my 2 kids (and on welfare at times) but that did not stop me from instilling morals and respect into my children! They both grew up with little more than the love i could give them and they are gentle caring and very productive adults!! The question isnt about gun control or mental health but about parental control (in most instances) adhd is just another excuse for a parent to let their kid run wild! People, raising kids isnt just a financial commitment but an emotional one too! If youre not ready for it, dont have children!!

Unfortunately, drugs run rampant in all walks of life; it's just that the more money you have, the less violence you need to buy or sell them. Prescription drugs and alcohol are the largest group of drugs abused in this country, and result in more overdoses and deaths than do street drugs. You just add poverty into the mix and you have a truly deadly cocktail.
As for blaming liberal Democrats for not caring about crime; I don't see any of the super-rich Republican powers that be caring too much about reducing crime, either (except for touting the right of everyone to own as many guns and bullets as you wish). You think they care about anyone except those who will re-elect them either? Get real...Do you believe and trust any of these politicians?
Places like this is where all the high crime stat's come from. Mother with a house full of kids that don't even know who the father is, kids raised by their gang banger buddies. And taking my guns is gonna fix this, no I don't think so.

i was pistol whipped a few years ago by three thugs in my hallway(in the ghetto) trying to steal from the crack dealer downstairs.you tell me how we're gonna stop this kind of @!$%# by new laws. i have since moved but am sure they haven't given up there guns because they were against the law. This is an unfortunate example of how people are in America. It is just a miracle that the little girl did not get more seriously hurt. Just not her time. The type of individuals who commit these acts are well known to the neighborhood and police. What can be done about them not much if anything.
Gun control does not have a chance of reducing this type of crime. The guns being used were not purchased legally and are not registered. The user's probably have record files that could match a dictionary in volume.
Isolate the trouble makers, arm them and let them have at it. We can always send in some garbage trucks in to clean up the results.
This story is played out daily in every city in the country. Some are much worse.

Things are more serious than I first imagined... There needs to be more done than "gun control". They need coward control..
I hope they get smart, and bring in licensing and registration. Along with total ammunition control. Thats the best way to deal with keeping bad guys unarmed, by keeping them empty of bullets. Under the current laws, anyone can buy bullets for any gun, no questions asked. That kind of crazyness should stop.
