A 6-year-old girl -- shot and left for dead by the Taliban in Afghanistan earlier this year -- received free reconstructive surgery at a hospital in the U.S. Friday.
"She's OK. All is good, thank God!" said Elissa Montanti of the Global Medical Relief Fund.
The nonprofit children's organization, based on Staten Island, helped bring Marizeh to the U.S. after the attack that cost the girl her right eye.
Taliban fighters ambushed Marizeh's family as they drove home in a remote, unidentified region of Afghanistan last spring, said Montanti.
Her father tried to hide the girl under his feet inside the family car but she was shot in the face, after watching both her father and brother murdered.
"They thought she had died. She was there for three hours before she was discovered," said Marizeh's doctor, Kaveh Alizadeh.
The plastic surgeon, who founded a nonprofit group that provides medical care to needy children, first heard Marizeh's story during a trip to Afghanistan.
On Friday, Alizadeh performed surgery on Marizeh at South Nassau Communities hospital on Long Island to help repair lingering damage to her breathing and facial structure. She had previously been fitted with a temporary prosthetic eye.

The medical care should have cost upwards of $100,000, Alizadeh said; but in this case, it was all done for free.
"To think about the trauma she’s been through and to see her come down and have a smile on her face, it’s unbelievable," said hospital chief operations officer Joseph LaMantia.
Marizeh is expected to leave the Oceanside hospital this weekend and return to the Global Medical Relief Fund's headquarters in Staten Island.

It's unclear when she will go home to Afghanistan. Montanti declined to reveal Marizeh's last name or hometown, for fear the Taliban will target her again.
"If they know the Americans are helping them, it's dangerous. So we have to be cautious," Montanti said.
For all who helped Marizeh, it was a danger worth facing, to restore a little girl's smile.
"She is a very happy little girl, a lovely girl," Montanti said.

Yep, I hope you don't think this girl will go home. How do you keep a secret that the girl is in America getting Medical Treatment? How do you keep her family safe from the Taliban looking for what is left of her family? How many will come here so they too are not persecuted by the Taliban? Don't get me wrong I think its great that this girl got the help she needed but I don't feel the United States needs to take in everyone in that is being persecuted just because of it. If you think she will like living in America ask your self this, will she be happy without all her friends and the rest of her family or will she feel the United States of America stole her life?
Confused, she is 6 years old! Don't you think she could adjust to new friends and family in the US?
I hope she is not sent back. I don't think one little girl is going to break the bank. If Congress didn't vote itself a raise this year, we could use that money to support her until she is an adult. Or we could all donate our Starbuck's money for a week.

First let me say, I am very happy for this child...what a blessing she survived.
However, I am a firm believer that charity starts at home.
There are many children that are suffering here in the USA...
What about children that need surgeries, but their families can't afford it?
When we no longer have the homeless, hungry and neglected in our country, then we can spend on other countries.
The government reduces money for needed programs, (mental health for example) here, but can send money to other countries.
How about donating our Starbuck's money for a week to our military men and women that come back from war that need assistance for one reason or another. When our vets do not have to struggle...then we can help.

Don't send her back!! That's crazy!! She didn't "sneak" across the border...she's not here illegally...aren't we "at war" with the Taliban? Isn't she a casualty of that war?? Not only let her stay but send for her mother and any remaining siblings. I am sure there are other Afghan ex-pats that will sponsor her family. Yes we need to take care of our own but showing a little mercy to others measures us as a people. I too believe that the Taliban will be back, maybe the Chinese will tackle the problem that the Russians and Americans couldn't fix. Either that or round up all the gangs in L.A. and in the prisons and give them amnesty if the go to Afghanistan for 2 years and clear out the Taliban, probably wouldn't take that long but make it 2 years anyway.

American children that need surgeries can and do get them. There is a federally sponsored program that get's children medical care who's parents can't afford it. I think it is called CHIPS. There are also Shriner's programs. Finally, there are the individual welfare units of the various cities, counties and states. Even illegal immigrant's children who are not qualified for welfare get medical care and surgeries done in the US. Basically, in the US no child is turned away. Are there anecdotal exceptions? Probably, but that is not due to the lack of trying by a myriad number of public and private agencies in the US.

The one I would not be in favor of is sending the gangs--yes, they probably would succeed, but the ones that would survive would come back here more highly trained and deadly than before. A few of those would probably turn their life around for good, but many would come back to the same life of crime--just deadlier.
Yeah.....I gotta say that this reminds me of that little Iraqi girl who, after OUR Soldiers accidentaly shot her parents to death as they'd failed to stop quickly enough at a road-block in Iraq in 2005 (I think), had her face - crying, devastated - splashed across our front pages; though it only reminds of that incident BECAUSE of the fact that, while OUR SOLDIERS did ACCIDENTALY shoot that childs parents, they DID NOT SHOOT HER (or her brothers)!!!

I have several buddies who have confirmed heart wrenching stories about trigger happy commanders and soldiers just trying to survive. Unfortunately, the media and citizens of this country are not open minded enough to see that NO one wishes to see the death of a child. Most likely the Afghanistan government is watching her closely and wouldn't let her be adopted here.

Get shot by the Taliban, and you become a cause celebre entitled to state of the art medical treatment.

It reminds me of the 2007 "collateral murder" video where, instead of sending her to the military hospital, the girl is allegedly handed over to local care. Apache helicopters gunning down journalists and children don't make good press here; so without someone leaking the video it never would have officially happened. Now she is probably dead and the ones that let us see the truth are experiencing hell on earth.

Folks... I'm glad the U.S. could help her as we've helped many in the past. But as for sending her back, while many argue she should stay, we've really not enough information to make that decision. I'm sure this girl has family there, and while they'd be more than grateful for the help provided her, I'm sure they also want her back. I would. So before we start looking for a new home and family for her here, let's make sure she does not leaving one behind there.
As for the Taliban... I'm hoping they all find that special hell made especially for them... and soon.

It is better for the US, British and western non-profit organizations like Global Medical Relief Fund to keep away from trouble spots and the Muslim basket case nations like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia and other places.

It's a good thing all the kids living overseas come from single parents who are themselves the only child of their dead parents. If not, we'd be taking a lot of kids away from aunts, uncles, grandparents and, in this case, a possible suviving mother.

After listening to all the above comments, I have to say I agree that this lovely child's life would not be worth spit if she is sent back to that land of love and tolerance hell hole of a sandpit she came here from. This is a situation she had no control over and to send her back would be a grave injustice. To those individuals whining about their so called tax dollars, I personally would have no problem with the minuscule impact that it would have overall on my taxes to let her stay here and grow up and lead a normal, happy, and productive life. Love and tolerance: In America, any yo-yo with an assault weapon can blow away classes of young children. Add up all the guns here and it is mass destruction. More people, and more children, die in America every year than in the wars overseas. If we all said NO, and really backed it up, we might have a chance here in America. Our Constitution is much larger than the 2nd Amendment. There are laws supporting Due Process (the right to face one's accuser if a person has been accused of a crime), and such laws are being violated all the time and we say nothing. There are no Constitutional laws supporting the rights of crime victims (which might be the real reason why there is all the gun mania); victims are called "witnesses," while "society" is considered the real "victim," and then "society" is defined any way the government wants at the time. If "society" has a big lobby, then "society" will dictate laws that are opposed to safety of ordinary citizens.
This little girl will not be safe back home (obviously), but in America, she will also be living in a violent, sick land, which will not improve until we face the fact that our statistics here at our home are worse than almost anywhere. We have to really search the world to find worse statistics concerning crime victims.
Ok so for the record do you have hard numbers on the genocide of American Children? I am curious as Africa, Balkans/Croatia, Parts of the Middle East, Asia have a higher mortality rate of children through violence period. The Constitution is what makes us who we are, all of it not just free speech. The average gun owner is responsible and takes the right to bear arms seriously. The CT massacre was horrible to say the least but compromising any of our rights to "fix" the problem will not make bad people go away. Americans seem to get squeamish about holding individuals accountable and think outlawing or banning something solves the problem. Past and current drug war is a screaming example. I think your on target for the most part but firearm ownership like free speech does not guarantee wisdom. The Taliban will not go away until we figure out how to refight the war of ideas that created them. Plus the power vacuum created by their removal could open the doors for something worse. India is worse than Taliban country for women. Let's face it about India; how smart are the politicians there that allow women to be in more danger than in Taliban country, rent a submarine from another country, and now trying to build an aircraft carrier out of an old cruiser hull purchased from another country. Hospitals across India are full of women burned with fuel and acid, because they don't want to marry some jerk that lives in abject poverty or they served tea at the wrong temperature or resisted being fondled on a bus or refused to be a prostitute and give the money to inlaws or demanded an indoor toilet instead of using the sidewalk or in public view.

It all adds up: at least $6000 a year. Try that on a $20,000 a year job. It just wouldn't happen.

For many many years it has been our custom to allow political asylum for those who cannot go back to their country of origin. And there are not many like this little girl. The last one to need medical help went to England (Malala Yosephsei) I understand your concern with helping our own first, and I can appreciate that. But our problems in that arena of our own back yard are complicated, and I don't think that a very small number of child foreign war victims will even begin to make a dent in what we need to do here at home.

This girl should remain in the USA, and any family members should be brought into the country immediately. They are obviously in need of political asylum. There are plenty of Americans who are happy to help out with costs until they get on their feet. Yes there are lots of American children who also need our help, but that doesn't mean that we dismiss this child's needs.
Turn off the reality show and start reading the real news. Half the population over here is in need of political asylum, and we haven't the capacity to care for them all in the U.S. If we are going to help them, we need to help them here, not there. There are a few exceptions to the rule, but for the most part no. Besides, most want their country to get better, not run from it to an unknown future where they may find another hell awaiting them.

Okay, they don't give her first name or town she lives in upon her return, but they show her picture. I would think a picture of her is a very easy way of identifying her. I do not think that going back to Afganistan is a option for this little girl anymore.
