Report: Female Las Vegas blackjack dealer stabs another

An alleged fight between two female blackjack dealers at the Bellagio hotel-casino in Las Vegas sent one of the women to the hospital and the other to jail.

NBC Las Vegas affiliate KSNV reported that the Friday night incident landed 50-year-old Brenda Stokes behind bars after an unnamed victim was left with deep cuts to her face.

The reported altercation took place in one of the high-profile luxury casino's pits, a spokeswoman for the Bellagio told the station.

It was the second violent incident inside a Las Vegas Strip casino in recent days. Last week, an Illinois man shot and killed his ex-girlfriend and then himself in the lobby of the Excalibur resort. The woman was an employee of the resort.

Stokes was charged with burglary, two counts of battery with a deadly weapon and mayhem, according to Clark County online inmate records. She was due in court Dec. 26.

Stokes allegedly had an "edged blade," a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Department told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The victim's condition was unknown, and police could not confirm whether the two dealers were working at the time.

So more gun control? Or do we just ban all sharp pointy objects as well?

You all are so mature. But seriously, no one died. Had that been a gone, the girl in the hospital would most likely be dead. Not that a knife can't kill. Guns are just easier to kill with and harder to counter.

I guess I am just wondering why this is headline national news. This sounds like a simple cat fight between two blackjack dealers that got a little out of hand, nothing more. People get sliced with knives in fights every day all over the country, why is this incident such big news.

It's national news because the media is feeding the American lust for reading about and seeing bloodshed.

This is not news at all, and that's why I clicked on it, to see how a stabbing in Vegas could possibly be worthy of national coverage. It didn't, except to fuel the flames of the violent sitting in their mothers basements trying to decide how to best become infamous.

Unusual for Las Vegas to allow such stories to "leak" to the National Press.

Really, this type of stuff happens way too often, in any big city, in Amerika!

Las Vegas "image", "what happens in LV, stays in LV, is damaged by such national news reports", the "FUN CITY", yeah right!

neither was killed ...much harder to kill with a knife, than a gun ...and that's the point ! guns, and particularly, automatic weapons, make it to easy to mass murder ...we don't need them here ...leave them to the battlefields..

If only there were some armed police/security people in the casinos this could have been prevented. Oh wait never mind.

I'm I the only one that remembers Archie Bunker's idea to prevent airplane hijackings was to pass out guns on planes?

Archie was right, there called air marshals, and for most parts its working.

No Archie's idea was to pass out guns to the passengers and collect them after the flight lands.

      Vera

Being shot does NOT automatically result in death. In fact, unless one was shot in a vital area, it IS possible to survive. In many cases it is the result of shock that one dies from a gunshot wound. The same can be said for a knife. Unless you are stabbed in a vital area, it is also possible to survive, but the shock, bodily damage, loss of blood (all the same things that occur with a gunshot wound) can also kill. In addition, you may argue that a gun can be used at a distance, but a knife can be thrown, and and certainly there are knife throwing experts. Even a decent sized rock can kill if thrown accurately. So your comment about certain death if a gun was used is baseless and irrelevant. I don't own a gun, and am not a member of the NRA, but I do believe in the right to bear arms and protect myself if need be.

If only they had both been armed, we could have had multiple deaths including innocent bystanders.

@Maximum Kimchi that is why it is important to have semi-automatic weapons with large magazine clips. The Newtown shooter was able to get off 90 shots in two minutes (before the first responders arrived), ensuring none of the twenty first graders survived.

Don't take life so seriously, no one gets out alive. So what makes the world today so much worse than lets say the Crusades, Revolutionary War, 1812 when the British burned the White House, or 1865 the Civil War, or slavery, or WWI, or WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, Dessert Storm, 911 ... nothing has changed.

Nothing is different today than yesterday, it is our lot in life hence good justification for why we personally need to have guns to protect our individual lives.

I also don't believe Nevada is taking life "so seriously". I think Nev is doing what a lot of people won't.
Seeing it as it really is.

This world was supposed to evolve into something better, not revert to the "bad times" from the past (as in your examples).

I'm sure it was all a misunderstanding that started when the perp heard "Hit me" one too many times.

            @cgtrav,

If you can quantify what you are talking about, it is subject to the scientific method. Otherwise, it is opinion. So pardon me if I wait to see your source regarding knife deaths per attack compared to gun deaths per attack before I jump on your bandwagon. In the meantime, by way of anecdotal evidence, let me state that even though I'm old, fat and bald, if I'm within five feet of you with a knife, and you have a gun, you've got more of a problem than I do.

Not really; more people will flock to the casinos now. Same when the cocaine cowboys were shooting up Miami, people flocked from all over the world hoping to witness the wild west of Miami. One tourist became a hero in England when he intercepted a stray bullet. This type of behavior has been going on since America was populated, it's just now with the internet, cell phones, satellite 24 hour news, people are aware of it. America is not becoming more violent per capita, it's just that there are more people now. Americans love violence, fiery crashes in race car events, boxing, etc. Everyone is equal, everyone's child is gifted, no child can do wrong; they just perceive things differently, the politicians order the bombing and engineer the killing of world leaders they disagree with.

America is a microcosm of the World. If you go to DC you can eat food cooked in any style you want and its better than in the country which initially produced it. Do you know a religion with more than 10 participants not practiced here? One of the tenets of most religions is "thou shalt not kill." Most people pretend to be, "law abiding." but NO one is , intoto. Can you go through the 10 commandments and the 7 deadly sins and say " Not me"? Then drive your auto 1 mph above the legal speed limit?

Its hypocritical to cast aspersions as to someones intelligence while openly putting ones own intellect in the spotlight. When you leave your own field of expertise and venture into someone elses your classification can change drastically.

Ever shoot a gun? It's FUN. A lot of fun. That is why guns will always be available in this country.

Anyway, when the infrastructure of western industrialized civilization finally breaks down (the Mayans won't have anything to do with it, but our unsustainable lifestyles will), we're going to need all our guns. There will be nut-jobs all over the place looking to take what we have away from us.

It will be a sort of real-life "zombie apocalypse" because long-pork will most certainly be on the menu. So don't be taking your guns into any of these asinine trade-in programs now, y'here? You're going to be needing them very much sooner than you think.

It's ever so much later than you think.

But I hate idiot gun nuts. Being a responsible gun owner also means not making retarded statements in public.

As for civilization breaking down, that's why you have a bunker, right? And no, Popeye, it won't happen any sooner than I think. But if it does, you can dance a little jig in your underground fortress and drool "I told you so!"'s all night.

If everyone in that casino had a gun and the woman in fight had pulled hers, and someone saw the shooting and pulled their gun and shot the first shooter, then someone else thought, he's killing those women and pulled his gun and some saw him and pulled their gun, etc. It would have been a blood bath, instead of just one person getting hurt. This is what the gun advocates want, and that would be okay with me. After a while all the gun nuts would be extinct and the survivors, if any, could go on.

If 27% of those in that casino had a rocket launcher and if 30% had Abrahm Tanks and if 17% had rifle propelled grenades (with the rifles of course) and if 8% had Claymore Mines and if 15% had UZI's and if the only one with a knife was the 50-year old blackjack dealer then the blackjack dealer who got cut wouldn't have gotten cut and the 50-year old blackjack dealer would've died of embarassment at being so under-armed and out-of-date. Who carries a knife? Is she Mrs. Jim Bowie or something? This could be a disturbing trend. Knives? What's next - fists? And after that... actual verbal arguments???? If this keeps up we might be reduced to "talking out our differences and reaching rational conclusions." GAWD!!! How boring. What will we do with all our surplus elementary school students????

Any point of taking guns away from everyone is a moot point because you can not do it. Unless of course you can do away with stupid, inane, bigoted, racist, hatred, insanity, religious rhetoric, crime and all the bad things Humans can be. What some DO NOT understand is that EVERYONE is different from everybody else. Your thoughts, ideas and agendas are completely different from mine or the next person. The World is the way it is, period! Unless there is a meeting of the minds of the 7 billion folks in the world there will be wars, crime and people that will have extreme hatred towards one another. You can't change everyone just because you want to. You can't spew religious quotes because everyone has their own quotes different from yours. How about something simple as: Live your life and NOT trod on others. Best advice I can give everyone.

And anyone concerned about it happening any time soon is really and truly paranoid. They might ban assault rifles and high-cap mags, but come to your house to take them away? Not in YOUR lifetime, at least. But it is a good excuse to tell the wife if you want another AR or AK.

The sun will also become a red giant some day, and it's pointless to worry about it now.

This, of course, assumes you're rational, which a lot of you gun nuts aren't. You blame Obama for driving up gun sales when it's your own paranoia that's responsible. After all, you're the ones buying them.

Some of you are really and truly paranoid! Talk about better mental health screening, if we could do that you'd never be allowed anywhere NEAR a gun.

                                1. Your saying I am a gun nut? That shows what an imbecile you are. I do not own or ever had owned a gun.

                                2. I was speaking of reality. What is real in the World in every day living.

                                3. I never blamed Obama, Bush or YOU for any criminal that is responsible for the own actions, period.

                                4. If I am funny for giving you plain facts then what are you???

                                5. So I suppose that if you tried to take away people's rights and 50 million of them said no way you would just put them all into jail? Oh that's right they let criminals out now because of overcrowding.

                                6. Next time you post give us some facts and not looney tunes of the world according to you.

                                7. If I ever commit a felony crime then you can make such rash statements that you have made to me and others.

                                8. Try living your life with respect to others and not TROD the F all over them!

Just added. Ah you changed most of your post. Okay, whatever.

Doggone it...these people need to get it right - they each have a gun, they both shoot the other one dead on the spot. A ride to the morgue, a little carpet cleaner and everyone is back at the tables. Knives are too messy ...now there'll be a court case, people will have to testify, the one with wounds to her face will have to have plastic surgery and she'll sue everyone within 15 feet of the incident... messy, messy, messy. Guns would have been much tidier, even if a couple innocent bystanders got plugged, too. That's the cost of business as usual in this country!

if knives and gambling were banned things like this wouldn't happen. or maybe register every knife and charge a violence tax on every knife sold.

                                            Blackjack's a weapon.

                                            "Hit me." Even sounds violent.

                                            Not to mention expensive.

                                            Ban it.

It probably was an assault knife .....need to ban that as well as place a limit the number of serrations.
