Vandals draw Hitler mustache on baby Jesus in nativity scene

View more videos at: http://nbclosangeles.com.

Police on Sunday were searching for the person or people responsible for vandalizing Nativity scenes at a Catholic church and a home in a Southern California city.

Someone misspelled "Hail (sic) Hitler" and drew a Hitler mustache on the baby Jesus outside a home in Huntington Beach, police said.

They also put a Nazi symbol on one of the wise men with a black pen.

Homeowner Richard Candlish reported it to police and cleaned up the scene he said he spent a month putting up.

"It probably took less than 15 minutes for someone just to deface all of it," he said.

The case followed another one in which similar scrawlings were found about three blocks away on a Nativity scene at Saint Bonaventure Catholic Parish.

Parishoners reported the vandalism to the police.

Parishoner Max Periolat, 10, said he was offended.

"Who would do such a thing?" he said. "If I saw them I would give them a whopper."

Police said they were investigating.

Yes please, I hope you are the one sneaking into my yard at night in rural TX.

I may be a liberal in many respects but you can ask the meth heads around here what my position on personal property and the 2nd Amendment are, they will tell you all about it.

I bought the tires on my truck with my own hard earned money. This xmas display was paid for with dirty church money that was taken(conned, stolen) from fools too damn stupid to realize that no man can tell them @!$%# about any god or the afterlife.

Yugo? Are there really still any of those piles out on the road? I've always been a Chevy man myself.

So Living in the woods, do your insults toward Christians make you feel high and mighty? What are your beliefs, because the big bang theory is after all just a theory too, so are the rest of them. Lashing out at all other irrationally to make yourself feel better makes you just as equal of a hypocrite and just as intolerant. The fact you state that you hate makes you a prime suspect in any criminal activity that happens in the future, might wanna be careful there!

Merry Christmas, hopefully all can come back more tolerant and more friendly.

As stupid and moronic as this graffiti is, thank heavens they make spray paint. It can be fixed. Some folks are attention-seeking whores, and they revel in this kind of cowardly, ill-begotten behavior.

I don't follow the Christian religion, but I'm certainly not going to vandalize someone else's property, religious images/icons and belief paraphernalia. Only backstabbing criminals do this.

How sad that such people can't get over themselves and their crutches that they call personality.

For others, I don't care what religion someone belongs to (or not!), that's their business. I don't force mine on others, and I expect the same back (and I say so). This is a matter of vandalism, and it's uncalled for.

So the magic marker guy got his christmas wish - notoriety in a big way.

Quite a boring report really. Spoon-fed the crummy drama by the media one could think everything is falling apart. I wonder why the media concentrates on the junk - oh, wait, I know, it's because dirty laundry sells the news.

There are many good items to report on during the holidays - how about reading about soup kitchens with neighborhood volunteers distributing cozy blankets and hot meals to families in need or in trouble this winter? Now that's noteworthy. We do much more good than not. It's time to focus on the positive. Or better yet get out and do some positive!

Cheers and wishes for a nice new year to all.

Thanks for proving my point "Seewhat I mean". Can't stand not to toss out an insult there could you. I am an engineer, practicing physical science every day. So to answer your question, yes, I have hear of science. Thanks for asking however, I am always ready to learn new things, unlike the less tolerant.

Who says carbon dating is correct, well, actually is is accepted to be accurate based on assumed timelines, but is it really? Who says the science is correct on many points? Those that believe the points in questions, that is who. If someone provides compelling evidence, then it becomes accepted until someone else provides compelling evidence to the contrary, which does happen quite often. If scientist become so stodgy that everything we believe currently is the only right way, then there will never be further progress in science at all. Everything is correct or incorrect based on our own observations and beliefs. Theory is just that, and while many things are accepted theory, they still aren't law.

My point is that all should be tolerant, you are not, I bid you peace and hope you can find tolerance in place of your hatred.

Archeologists and historians have also claimed that the location of the Garden of Eden is at the northern most point of the Persian Gulf. Should we discount their research just because a group of scientist say so. What if they are wrong. Most discoveries by scientist are theories and hypotheses(educated guess or assumptions). Theories and hypotheses are not proven beyond a resonable doubt to be fact. So please do not try to pass a theory as fact and consider that the other side of the argument may have some validity.

@See What I Mean. I could wow people all day with science experiments and big words, especially if they have no training or interest in science. But like I stated earlier, the so called proof of how old the earth is and where it all began is still being debated even between scientists. It is not proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be true. Same can be said for intelligent design. Neither side has come up with the answer. Just so we are clear on where we stand, I am not a religious person, I am what they call a skeptic. I myself have not seen enough proof to accept either one as fact. Until then I will be open to both sides of the argument.

Obviously this is the ignorance of the limp-wristed secularist Liberal/Progressive cabal. These useful idiots are so frustrated with their inability to succeed in life they have to vandalize other people’s property.

Of course the illiterate unwashed masses that believe in Progressivisms failed concept of social and economic justice will find some dysfunctional way of condoning this. This is what happens when we allow the government to educate our children, we end up with directionless, confused, embarrassing lemmings that believe everything the lamestream media and criminal government tell them.

Our Nativity scene has been up for over 20 years and no one has touched it. Last year we had one of our poor little lost Liberals actually come by and help us put it up. He and his family have recently joined our church. The congregation was thrilled. It’s great to see there still is hope for the many lost souls aimlessly wandering this planet without direction. Most are seeing the light and accepting what everyone believes in, Faith.

SeeWhatIMean, classic early period internet trolling you really should be ashamed at your lack of credible talent. Everyone playing the troll game knows at least two things; if you point out typoes as a means to defame another then you are weak and grasping at the easiest element in a post as you cannot refute any other part or in any other credible fashion, as well if you resort to using phrases such as, "I don't bother with [name]'s posts after slamming that individual in prior posts it shows that person actually does cause great stirring in you. Good on you at least for putting the pie on your own face.

        JimSpence,

Invective is something you should study, spewing forth attempts at invective only show you have no grasp in continuance of insult of a weighty nature. To wit, dog shyte still stinks even if it is only one hand full, your impeteously large pile of mouth filth just prooves you are angry and had some practice at abusing others without clear understanding of the language you use. If you wish to drag the idea of unwashed into this, do try to remember that is was the conservitive catholic church that worked so hard to convince peasants not to bath and that historical facts can show you prior to christianity in the Roman process barbarians and wild men bathed daily both for cleanliness and pleasure.

People have also assumed the person or persons involved where young, if I failed to see where the article stated they actually had the people in custody and thus everyone else knows their exact age then that is more people jumping to conclusion, with the article ending with the issue still being under investigation I do think basing judgements now to be divinely ignorant which is buisness as usual for the majority of people these days. I will refrain from making a judgement on the why people and which people until I can see clear and evident facts.

As to the defacing, it may have been an idle prank or just another indicator that this country is being well set for the impending collapse. Either or, it matters little to me as a humble servant of the country. However, malice upon individuals errantly conducted (I see no where evidence that the man whose property and the curch that was defaced are connected though they possibly could be turning this into more of a private attack) and against any holy place (I have no religion as all religions have their merit to those who desire or need of them and thus should be respected) is and are acts that all people should band together to shun. I seel no assistance or even agreeances as I am well aware, as is everyone else when they set their thoughts to it, that only what the individual wants the individual will fight lie and scheme to obtain.

I'm not saying it's right, but nativity scenes have become somewhat controversial in recent years. There is now a good chance a display may elicit a "response" from one or more folks out in your community. Maybe we should put armed cops at all nativity scenes. We better ask the NRA if that's o.k. with them...We sure don't want to offend the NRA - the original, genuine protectors of All Great American Values.

There is just something about each and every one of your Newsvine posts which telegraphs in advance your present, all-consuming fixation, even before we get to the actual text of your comments which merely confirm the suspicion. What could it be, ...what could it be?

People fighting (and killing) on Christmas eve - proves it's really just another day.

Defacing an inanimate object - oh, the horror of it all. Gawd, my old neighborhood would have all been hung for throwing snowballs at cars.

This is why God invented backyards - you put the fancy stuff out front and you are just inviting vandals...just like posting on a forum invites attacks...lol.

Can you get a Whopper on Christmas eve? That sound really good right now, sure beats that menudo my ex in-laws served at Christmas.

Archeologists and historians have also claimed that the location of the Garden of Eden is at the northern most point of the Persian Gulf.

I heard a talking snake verified their claim upon arrival.

Trying to locate the Garden of Eden is like trying to locate the island of Atlantis. They both existed only in the imagination of the authors of the books they are mentioned in, i.e. Moses and Plato, respectively.

If Tracy were actually a scientist or engineer (who have to study physics) she would know that there is a BIG difference between a Scientific Theory and the "normal" type of theory such as a legal theory. A scientific theory is what is the RESULT of forming a hypothesis (which is the garden-variety THEORY) and setting up TESTING which then leads to a scientific THEORY.

But again, if Tracy were actually who she says she is she would already know this. Therefore, her blatherings reveal her statement of profession to be untruthful.

Now we'll be getting those critical comments from the left, that the Christmas season over emphasizes Christianity and doensn't show enough respect to Islam or atheism!

How about the fact that this is one of very few instances where a christian holiday display is vandalized while there are numerous atheist holiday displays that are routinely vandalized? Our billboards are defaced, banners are stolen, torn down. Sometimes even in plain view on video.

                  http://ffrf.org/news/news-releases/item/16390-ffrf-solstice-banner-missing-in-michigan

                  http://wnep.com/2012/12/20/man-cuts-down-banner-protesting-religious-decorations/

Yes, vandalism is bad in any case. But the fact that this one case gets more national coverage than the numerous atheist cases, only emphasizes the privileged Christians still enjoy in this country, or the persecution complex they have.

It would appear he/she succeeded, at least enough to make you start coming up with straw-man arguments about "liberals" and putting them down for things that only exist in your own head. Not everything that happens in this world is connected to politics or involves a "liberal" conspiracy of some kind. Get a grip.

obama promised to be a unifer, but he's doing just the opposite! This country is more divided today than it has ever been! And increased attacks on Christians is just one example! I am not very religious, mostly agnostic, but it doesn't bother me to see Christlmas Trees in public places, or nativity scenes either.... why is this such an irritant to atheists, and why do they get government support to remove Christian symbols during this time?

                  @Sally Rocks -

First - Obama has nothing to do with this.

Second - The only irritation to atheists occurs when Christians try to use a public space for their displays to the exclusion of all other displays. We only demand equal access to those public spaces - either through a forum where various ideas have freedom to be expressed, or not allowing access to anyone. Funny thing is, when atheists use our right to display our stuff, Christians are among the first to try to have ours removed.

I am obviously an atheist and I am looking at a christmas tree here in my own living room. Of course there is no damn nativity scene under it. Christianiacs stole xmas from the pagans to begin with. As far as I am concerned christmas is an American holiday more than a religious holiday.

With all due repsect, I think you're a bit militant in your atheism. I'm an atheist, and I really don't care what any community displays in their public places.

You almost sound as though you want atheism to be a recognized religion unto itself, and it very simply isn't. It's the absence of.

You're fighting on principal. There's nothing to be gained. Hold the forums at your house. Let the communities have their displays.

How is demanding equal access being militant? Are Christians being militant when they post their holiday displays? Are Jews being militant when they display a menorah? If you don't want to exercise your rights, that is fine. But don't criticize others for choosing to exercise our rights.

And where did I state that communities couldn't have their displays? I simply stated that they can't have their displays to the exclusion of everyone else. Atheists have as much right to display holiday messages as religious people do. You don't have to be religious to have an opinion or a message. And government has no right to give preference to one group's message over another.

I guess it depends on what you mean by complacent. I believe we must do all we can to stop any and all religions from infiltrating our politics. Politicians who are overtly religious need to be voted out or voted down. In that regard, we have to fight like hell.

You make a good point. I couldn't care less if there is an atheist christmas display or not and as long as the nativity scene is on private property, I have no problem with it.

I just think that a group of people (who by their own definition don't believe in God and therefore have no religion) fighting for the right to display during the Holidays (which exist purely for religious reasons), is a bit hypocritical.

The fact that people think that the holidays exist for purely religious reasons is one of the main reasons I am on here challenging that perception. They don't.

I celebrate Christmas in a purely non-religious aspect. It is a time for me to celebrate friends and family and reflect over the past year.

To suggest that we can't have a message to say to others when they are out espousing their beliefs to everyone else, that seems hypocritical to me.

Militant is the act of active aggression or combativeness. Simply proving a point or expressing one's opinions isn't being militant. Stop trying to make what we're doing equate to that of militant Christians, Muslims, anti-abortionists, anti-gays, animal rights activists or others who actually use violence to advance their causes.

That said, why is the act of atheists putting out a message on the holidays 'proving a point' while it isn't for anyone else?

However I still am not completely certain what religion he truly follows, despite the fact that his wife has bragges about the 50 plus Christmas Trees they have in the White House this year.... that seems a little like they're trying too hard to show their Christianity... a little guilty maybe?

                        Elentir,

The Holidays at this time of year exist for purely religious reasons (yes, they morphed from pagan celebrations, etc.). That can't be denied.

How you celebrate them is up to you. If you have non-religious holidays at this time of year, that's wonderful.

The displays for Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa are there to celebrate something. Something that atheists don't, by their nature, believe in.

An atheist display, it seems to me, would exist just to make sure that everyone knows we're out there. For a non-religious group to shoehorn ourselves into a public display that is being used to express actual religious messages and celebrate actual religious themes seems hypocritcal.

I believe it's proving a point moreso than trying to deliver the traditional atheist holiday message.

                        Anyway, it's just my opinion.

Have a safe and Happy Holiday season.

I celebrate Christmas, MLK day, St. Patty's Day, Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day, New Years Day, Festivus, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Independence Day, Pi Day, Veterans Day, Summer/Winter Solstice, Mardi Gras and probably a few others I'm forgetting about right now. I usually celebrate them at the same time others do. As for what I celebrate at each one, it varies, but it usually involves celebrating friends and family or remembering those who are no longer with us.

The great thing about our country is that everyone is free to celebrate each day as they wish for whatever reason they choose (following the laws of course).

There are some things that you do not do! -- this is one of them.! No doubt kids, who have no understanding, at all, of history, and no modicum of respect for others!

To the person/people/kids who did this, you are probably thrilled that your sick prank made the news and are probably following the comments. Well let me inform you, because you obviously don't know, that Hitler was an incredibly evil man. A man who ordered the killing and torture of millions of people. To deface a nativity scene with symbols of this evil is beyound the pale. I hope that after reading this you have some measure of understanding, and are not still giggling with your "peers."

Shame on you! -- Shame on you!

Actually, I thought it was kind of funny, although I am sure it was not at all funny to the owners of the creche. It was a typical kid stunt. Drawing Hitler mustaches on things was popular with the less imaginative kids when I was in high school. But their misspelling of the word "Heil" as "hail" was really not too far off, since I think the English word "hail" and the German word "heil" are cognates, both meaning "to greet". The English word "hail" was spelled "heil" in Old English.

Quite a few years ago some youths took a Santa Claus from the Sheriff's yard (yes the Sheriff) and put it on the roof of the Jehova Witness Hall. I thought it was a harmless prank but the cops called it a hate crime and wanted to get the state crime lab involved. Luckily no one was ever caught.

That's a funny one, too, since Jehovah's Witnesses don't believe in celebrating Christmas, something I'm sure the perpetrator of this "crime" was aware of. I doubt that Jehovah's Witnesses would get too angry, though. They are a pretty mild bunch of people. They probably got a good laugh out of it, too.

Why is it a harmless prank? Just for the reason that your personal feelings were not involved? And what do you consider a prank? Anything that doesn't involve destruction your property, and insults your feelings and beliefs? I am sure if someone destroyed something you fell connected too, you would not be so dismissive?!

So glad you can have a sense of humor, for I am sure terrible things happen to yourselves on a regular basis. Don't forget to be forgiving and laugh when these many, many acts of insults on your personal property, beleifs, and your personal feelings are perpetrated. Thus, when your are seeking retrobution, and justice, just recall your current post's for reference.

While this may not necessarily have been on the mind of the vandal, I appreciate the social commentary it seems to suggest: that the seemingly innocuous manger scene is a microcosm of the totality of the Christian religion which, whenever it has wielded imperial, political, or social power throughout its history, has far more resembled Nazism than it has resembled the carefully crafted image of the New Testament Jesus figure which this stable-born babe was to become.

And while I don't condone vandalism, I'm certainly LMAO on this one and would much rather see the police spending their time tracking down pedophile priests than the perpetrators of a couple petty, and ultimately unimportant vandalisms.

See it for what it is, a hate crime against a religion. Desecrating religious images is hate vandalism 101. Should everyone that dislikes a given religion, goes to their house of worship and vandalises their stuff be considered just petty vandals?

@JAVE: Hate crime against a religion? You don't think that's a gross overreaction? If I were a Muslim, I would find the passage of ridiculous laws like Nebraska's outlawing Sharia law -- a complete non-issue -- nearer to a hate crime against a religion than a simple flipping of the bird to a local institution; yet you wouldn't consider what Nebraska did a hate crime, would you?

I'll run with your example of the Muslims. If vandals painted up religious articles at a Mosque and vandalized a Ramadan display on a person's lawn, would it be considered only petty vandalism? What if they didn't damage anything, but only stuck a pig's head on the lawn next to the Ramadan display?

Messing up houses of worship and community members religious displays is not a mere prank. Even if you don't like them.

Per Nebraska. I think the anti-Sharia law was useless. Even in a place like Nebraska, vandalizing religious stuff at a Mosque or in a Muslim's front yard will get you a hate crime charge.

This isn't happening, Silky J. Muslims in America are not trying to implement Sharia law. There isn't a single example of it happening. In the face of that fact, the shameful actions of Nebraska's legislature are a clear example of hateful bigotry meant to intimidate. My point stands.

JAVE: I'll run with your example of the Muslims. That was NOT my example, Jave. You're putting words in my mouth and you missed the point. There is every indication that this is mere petty vandalism, a mere prank and nothing more, not a hate crime. Just because insecure religionists with persecution complexes may, as a knee-jerk reaction, feel persecuted by a given act does not automatically make that act a hate crime. My point stands: to assume this to be a hate crime is a gross overreaction. While the cops may yet find the perpetrators and turn up specific evidence which points to a motivation in line with it being a hate crime, chances are it was just some kids doing what kids do---lashing out blindly at authority, lacking adult impulse control, trying to one-up each other and impress their friends. I suppose if some kids painted a Hitler mustache on a garden gnome, you'd assume it was a hate crime against nature-worshipping Pagans who believe in gnomes and faeries.

No, I wouldn't if it was a garden gnome. If the vandal went to the Pagan house of worship, painted a Hitler stash and swastikas on the holy gnome then @!$%#ed up the neighborhood Pagan's holy gnome display on their front yard, I would see it differently.

You're right. I'm pretty sure it wasn't on the mind of the vandal. When I was ten I'd draw mustaches on all sorts of things. I'm sure the ten year old culturally and politically insensitive part of me might have even thought a hitler mustache might have been funny. News flash- children are jerks.

JAVE: "Drawing swaskikas on religious displays is not a classic hate crime?"

No, drawing (what may have been) a swastika on a manger wise man and a Hitler mustache on the kid in the cradle is not automatically a hate crime. Do you honestly believe that any court in the country would rule this a hate crime based on this alone? This is exactly my point---a knee-jerk reaction due to a persecution complex. Any lawyer will tell you that whether an action is a hate crime depends upon the state of mind of the perpetrator. You don't know that state of mind, only the end result of the action itself. All you know is that an act of vandalism has occurred. You're making the rest up---assuming guilt until innocence is proven. We live in a country with a dismal public school system, and you think you can automatically ascribe to the perpetrator (probably a kid) a coherent understanding of these symbols in a historical context such that using them in the commission of a hate crime would even be possible for him? FACT: You do not have enough information to call this a hate crime. If you think you do, then you don't know what a hate crime is.

I guess your right. Boys will be boys. It's not a big deal. PS- I doubt this was commited by a ten year old.

Read the laws. many people don't perceive hate crimes as bad when they take place against those you hate. Few really give a crap about those people. The concept that a perpertrator of a hate crime has to be so well versed on...

I might not agree, but I can understand why a community's youth hold these beliefs.

It is a small difference to kicking the guy's ass when he comes out of his house.

That so many justify this is really @!$%#ed up.

As if the holidays aren't dark enough this year, what with the murdered children, greedy government shills, and now even something as simple and harmless as a Creche, and they have to insult and defile that too. cool thing about Christianity is that we love our enemies, and forgive those who viciously and despitefully use us.

If somebody pulled a stunt like that in Iran, what do you suppose the authorities would do to them? Guess Christianity is the only religion left on earth that can be freely ridiculed and disrespected. Makes me proud to be a Christian, and On pain of death I will NOT repent my faith.

                                            Romans 10:9-10

                                            King James Version (KJV)

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Merry Christmas to all, and may GOD bless you and all your loved ones.

Welcome America! Welcome, America, to Obama's cesspool. All we can do now is look back at our America as we knew it years and years ago. We can look back at our America as the Shining City on the hill that once existed, but does no more. America will become the legend, kind of like Camelot. Tales will be written about America, and movies will be made. Songs will be sung, and future generations will wistfully gaze up to the heavens as they privately, and secretly, muse about how wonderful such a place as America must have been. It is a Camelot story, and at the same time, a Planet of the Apes tale. Our grandchildren will read that........ for one brief moment, there was a place called Camelot / America!!

Farewell America. God bless the land that I once loved. Good bye, America. Good bye.

The America you describe never existed except for a group of white people. Slavery, women who were not able to vote and Jim Crow laws that existed until just a few years ago. Recent wars that killed over a 100,000 innocent people. Study the real history of this country and you will realize we don't have that much to be proud of.

The religious morons in America simply ruin all the freedoms we use to enjoy they constantly attempt to cut those freedoms and to even write bigotry into our beloved constitution. I don't know what President Obama has to do with any of this since he was the one who took America back from the brink caused by these right wing morons. They almost bankrupted the United States, thank goodness for President Obama. You cannot have a free society that enjoys freedoms the way we do if you inject religion into the mix, they contradict each other and if it were me who was to choose which we should have I would hands down pick FREEDOM over religious cults any day.

It seems to me that a society that is truly free is free for everyone, including those who are religious as well as those who are not.

Eva from your ignorant posts, it is no surprise you did not pay attention in school. I knew that slaves were btought to many countries in the new world. It is also well known that unlike other countries, our slave population was self sustaining and not in need of importing at a rate others did. But none of this is an excuse for Americas "peculiar institution". We also continued the practice of slavery long after most countrues of the new world outlawed it.

Someone perhaps spent a little too much time with the bottle? Camelot? Kings? Wrong country and poor tag on legend system. The Fall of Athens is more fitting yet that would also require more study and less time watching whatever is popular on televison. America has yet to enter her own Golden Age. The America that was, once long ago? Firstly, you wouldn't know about that place yourself unless you are 250 years old so you are talking out of politically designed history books and thus fairly moot by your own short time education. You should have studied longer, like now, still and tomorrow. However, to digress, America is still an infant in the long proccesions of History and only a selfish ignorant fool would give up on a child before it could grow and become something and only a thrice deeper fool would expect the child to grow up to be what the parent (or selfish american) wants it to be. America has Her own Destiny and She does not admire weak short term fools telling her she is already all used up because they can't get out of their own arse's way. Everyone seems to be ready to give up on America just because she is having Her wonderful puberty stage getting on, what a bunch of selfish cowering fools we have become as a Nation.

Lets hope and here is to being hopeful for a future where all the spoiled rats are drowned down with the ship of commen complacency and selfish shallow capitolist desires. You can all see I imagine that our goverment has already decided the only way to fix the mess is to shatter the vase and then get back to work again, I hope their goal comes soon enough for me to at least play the curious witness.

Because the liberals will define the legally sanctioned objects of "hatred and intolerance" around ANY depraved thing that's currently popular for them, as a way to control speech and thought and to gain power. Self-identifying groups and behaviors will have civil rights protections intended for innate traits (like race, gender, and disability).

To state the obvious christmas has nothing not one thing in fact to do with christianity, regardless of how much they claim it. As a matter of fact a true christian would refuse to celebrate the hoilday because it is a mockery of true christianity.

I have always been confused by why christians would celebrate a pagan holiday much less claim it as their own. I am sure some people believe christmas means all the jesus stuff but that is not the true meaning of the celebration.
