Major winter storm poses threat for holiday travel

Traveling could be tricky in certain parts of the U.S., where blizzards and severe storms are expected to last through the evening on Christmas day. The Weather Channel's Paul Goodloe reports.

A major winter storm sweeping through the United States could tangle holiday travel plans in the central United States and even in the South, as could a weaker storm moving through the Northeast.

The Northeast storm will likely bring a "wintry mix" to cities of the I-95 corridor and east to the coast but could still be detrimental to holiday travelers, according to weather.com.

“Despite the ‘more wet than white’ forecast for the I-95 urban corridor, expect major delays at the major Northeast airport hubs Wednesday due to low cloud ceilings and strong winds,” weather.com warned. “These delays may persist into Thursday morning due to low clouds, wind and potential changeover to light snow.”

The Weather Channel added: “Unfortunately, this occurs not only during the Christmas holiday, but also in the peak travel period after Christmas Day in the South, Midwest, and East.”

According to the flightstats.com website, 146 flights had been canceled and 4,089 had been delayed across the U.S. as of 10:50 p.m. ET on Monday. It was not known how many of these problems were due to the weather.

Car travelers will also likely be impacted -- AAA estimates that 93.3 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles for the holidays.

Last week, snow and high winds disrupted thousands of flights from the Midwest through the Northeast.

The stronger storm started in the Western U.S. and dumped six feet of snow in California's Sierra mountains.

Snow is forecast to cover the roads in Salt Lake City on Christmas morning, weather.com reported. Fresh snow is also expected to blanket parts of the adjacent High Plains, including Denver.

As the storm, dubbed "Euclid" by The Weather Channel, moves southeast, it threatens to hinder travel in the South, where it is forecast to bring “severe thunderstorms capable of damaging winds and tornadoes,” according to weather.com. Rain and thunderstorms are also predicted to hit Jacksonville, Charlotte and Orlando on Christmas Day.

Hundreds of flights hit again as winter weather continues

The storm is will rev up over Texas and sweep east into Mississippi. Thunderstorms are expected to develop during the morning hours of Christmas Day, around 3 a.m., lasting until about noon, according to The National Weather Service.

It is forecast to move through the South with 70- to 80-mile-per-hour winds early Wednesday morning, which prompted Mississippi officials encouraged residents to bring in their outdoor Christmas decorations for fear they could become dangerous projectiles.

“We understand that most people will be focusing on the holiday,” Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said in a statement. “Please plan now for how you will receive a severe weather warning and know where you will go when it is issued.”

“There are enough conditions working together to increase the threat for severe weather on Christmas Day,” the Weather Service said, adding that the main threat exists from the Houston area northward to College Station. “Residents of Southeast Texas are encouraged to monitor forecasts for updates.”

Three to six inches of snow are predicted in northern and western Arkansas later on Christmas Day, according to the Weather Service. One to three inches are forecast elsewhere in the state, although no accumulation is expected near the border with Louisiana.

I had terrible gas last night from a burrito I ate...It created a small weather front that swept across the planes of my living room and into the kitchen.

I'm pretty sure it mixed with the gulf of bathtub, the dead toilet sea, and the kitchen sink Atlantic. Perhaps the trade winds of the saturated north lawn coming through the patio door had some influence as well.

So when did we start naming snowstorms in December after people like hurricanes? Come on. A winter storm is not even remotely on the same scale if things! and 4 or 5 feet in the sierras is really not that big of a deal. Happens all winter.

Earth to weather.com....it sometimes snows a foot or so in the rockies in december. "Travel Chaos?" What a bunch of crap. When you decide to fly around Christmas, you have made the decision that you are going to roll the dice with travel delays.

Minus 32 celcius tonight in Calgary Alberta with wind chill. Light snow with lots on ground over past week. Coldest Christmas in quite some time. Too cold to even ski-snowboard. Best stay home and enjoy Turkey. Merry Christmas to all posters on this forum :-) HoHoHo.

I'm surprised the headline didn't read,"Miscount Discovered on Mayan Calender,Is End Beginning Now? Explaining the massive storm blasting across the nation is no natural and normal event, but the doomsday foretold long ago which would wipe out mankind. suspected linked to HAARP experiments, according to foreign and American sources.Guess the man in red, is supposed to represent blood. We just happen to not realized him for the hidden symbolism he was meant to herald ages ago.

Then newspaper would have gone on to talk about all those folks who had so strongly believed the end of the world was supposed to happen, and it didn't on 12/21/2012. Where are all those articles that flooded the stations, where are those who claimed to know it would happen?I guess in their bunkers, living off their food supplies for the next five years.

We still dont get snow like we did in the past. I was looking up some history on winter storms, and Blizzards. I was amazed at some of the blizzards and how harsh they were. The worst two in history were only a few months apart. Jan. 1888 known as the School house Blizzard. The temps were around 40, and then a cold front out of canada, and moisture from south came so quick it dropped the temp from 30's + to minus 40 in some places in just a couple hours. It came so fast that kids didnt have time to get home, and over 200 children died. To me that is incredible to think such a change in temperature can happen that quick. This one ranked as number 2 worst

The worst one, The great blizzard ( great white hurricane )was a few months later in march and it hit pennslyvannia and newyork hardest, basically east coast because it covered so much area. With snow over 50 inches and snow drifts in some places of 50 Feet !!!

I did enjoy the snow we got today here . It made my Christmas thats for sure. Nothing better then seeing everything all white.. Been a long time since i had a white christmas.

      #4.7 - Mon Dec 24, 2012 10:47 PM EST

      Marmaduke49-(School house Blizzard)

Also known as the Children's Blizzard, the same name for a very well researched book, I have read. Which mentions the specific factors creating the weather front. The reasons why so many were caught off guard and couldn't find their way to safety. Including how fast the temperatures were dropping in different locations. Imagine 18 degrees in three minutes. A wind chill factor of-67 when eight hours before it was 55 degrees.

If we learn anything, it's to always be prepared for what nature could throw at us. Hearing all about the terrible blizzards and storms, natural disasters which befall man does not a bit of good. If we do nothing for ourselves to be ready to help ourselves.Should we be caught in a bind.We are only as safe as our preparations have made us, or lack there of.

I remember that snowstorm well...we were among the "crazies" flying home for Christmas...and I had a 4 mo. old baby. We were flying from K.C. to Portland OR with a stopover in Denver...NOT! Sat in KC for about 4 hours getting a reroute through LA, San Fran then Portland. We got there about 6 hours late and with a baby...I swore I'd never do it again and I never did! Denver was still closed 3 days later and we had to be rerouted through Chicago on a red-eye flight. had to go to work after traveling all night with a baby.

Even though the weather is frightful, some well needed moisture must be appreciated. The extreme cold and frigid wind chills are a major concern for anyone during this Holiday season or during anytime during the winter months that may risk life and limb because of their dire situation. May the accidents be limited and the loss of life omitted from wise decisions of travelers to hunker down somewhere and be thankful the dice where not rolled. Merry Christmas America, stay safe, stay warm and God Bless!

Be safe and warm in the winter weather! It is nice to have weather reports... they do serve a purpose, or at least used to.
