Undated photo of Dylan Smith, who died off Puerto Rico.
The Belle Harbor section of the Rockaways in New York, where so many heroes emerged during Superstorm Sandy, has lost one of them to a tragic surfing death in Puerto Rico.
Friends of 23-year-old Dylan Smith and his family expressed sorrow Monday that someone who saved so many lives during the October storm could lose his own on vacation. A local funeral parlor said funeral arrangements were being made.
The New York City lifeguard was widely praised after the storm for using his surfboard to move several Queens neighbors endangered by high water and a fire to safety.
Smith's body was found floating Sunday morning near his surfboard in waters off Maria's Beach in the western Puerto Rican community of Rincon. The town's beaches attract surfers from across the world.

Sounds like he was surfing alone. Darwin award if he was.
WOW....if this is an example of "no good deed goes unpunished".....I don't know what to think anymore!!
dude stfu....wtf are you talking about anyway? Take your morbid bullsh*t somewhere else!!
Unpunished??!??!? What are you smoking? Go away troll before someone drops a house on you.
Jamie and The Lammer.....WOW, you 2 are as dumb as dirt....went right over your heads! Whatsamatter, things didn't go the way you planned today??
Very sad to read this.
When the hurricane hit, he stepped forward to help others, repeatedly. He was a true hero.
Bet the surf is up and he's hanging 10 in heaven. Thanks for the good things you did and the positive spirit given in your short time on earth:) Rest in peace brother and I look forward to seeing you someday!
Fate is like a sting and indiscriminate. Fate doesn't care if you're a hero or a villian, slack or perfectionist. Imagine if fate were human, how would it fair? To have emotions complicates the fare.
When fate takes a Hero we all remorse. Fate may take the hero, but we all know. Fate can't the legend that this hero has sown.
It's sad when we lose Great people. However We can honor his memory by being heros ourself. All it takes is the say something when all remain Quiet, do something when all remain still. A hero does not have superpowers, but is all very human. And that is something that the fate and gods can not abstain.
I concur!
I lost my "Surf Bud" ....not too long ago and would love to share my thoughts.... with many of you and this "Hero's" family! I will miss his being as well as, I miss my buddy....Glenns'....
To my amigo, my confidant….my Soul Brother!
For the past week, now I have laughed, shared stories, smiled and cried (a lot!) …and I am assuming that everyone that have shared this earth with you are feeling the same effects , also!
You are the most whole, non-judgmental, nature loving and Truly Honest Person… that I know and Respect! And you have taught me …”To be me”!
We have shared countless Waves, Laughs and Experiences together and I will never …ever forget one single one of them! And, although our paths had gone in different directions in the past few years, there has probably never been a single week gone-bye, that your Spirit and Wisdom has crossed my mind…and I Thank you! Whether it be music by Carlos Santana, Little River Band or Robin Trower, or maybe our parents (God Bless them!) running into each other on the street, a sip of Coors, a paddle out to the line-up, a good Donut, a burrito at Bobbie’s…and so on! You are there! And I don’t want that to ever stop!
A few memories that I can reflect on, that seem most monumental are…
The one night at a friend’s party, you proceeded to give me an impromptu lesson in Tae Kwan Do … I can still hear the cracking sound of my “Jimmy Durante” nose!
Lesson learned…if you Drink …Don’t Spar!
Or the time you and I took on the Wrath of Nature, Stables ….Storm Surf ….Eight foot faces…Cold water….and really Scary! Only for you to pull my “Unconscious body” out of the surf…I thank you!
Lesson learned …the average man, should not attempt to Drink the entire ocean! 20 plus years …I still taste Saltwater!
OK...I know Monsignor John is checking his watch by now!
So one more….
One that stands out… is the one morning, headed out to hit the morning session at 5am…yes 5am! You were driving your pop’s ole’ reliable green pickup, I as usual ….taking a re-energizing nap! BANG! Imagine for a minute driving down the 101 freeway ….and having the hood of your car fly open! Not good for the driver and not a really good for the Bum sleeping next to you, not a good way to wake up...You drove and I navigated….with my head out the window, as I recall ….it really messed up my hair?
Lesson learned… buy and “Alarm Clock” and Note to self; it’s probably good to latch the hood!
There were so…so many Life experiences and good times that we shared and I could go and on, but I know some day we will be re-united …and we can go over each and every one of them! …and Share some Laughs as well as, some tears!
God bless you my Brother…I know you are out there, riding that “Endless Wave” (Save one for me!) and coexisting with our brothers the Dolphins and Whales…
And each and every time I surf…
I will take in the Warmth of the Sun…
Feel your Presence, in the cool breeze…
…and Submerge myself in our ocean …Engulfing your Spirit!
I would just like to add …something that I read just a short time ago…
Live authentically…
And Savor each Precious Moment of your journey;
Because when you arrive at your destination,
Another journey begins.
Joe Keane
I Love you Brother…
I miss you…
…and I will never Forget!
Wait for me!
Your Brother Mike
Mikie," BEAUTIFULLY" said. I'm so sorry for you're loose and for this young man's family and friends. But this story didn't even tell us for sure that this young man really died surfing.
I feel for his parents, it is painful enough to loose a son , but so young and just before Christmas on top of all that!
Many prayers and condolences to the Smith family!
Going home, going home
I'm just going home
Quiet like, some still day
I'm justa going home
It's not far, just close by
Through an open door
Work all done, cares laid by
Going to fear no more
Momma's there expecting me
Papa's waiting, too
Lots of folk gathered there
All the friends I knew
All the friends I knew
I'm going home.... Nothing's lost, all's gain
No more fret nor pain
No more stumbling on the way
Going to roam no more....
Morning star lights the way
Restless dream all done
Shadows gone, break of day
Real life begun,Real Life just begun
There's no break, there's no end
Just a living on
Wide awake with a smile
Going on and on
I'z a Going home,
I'm just going home
It's not far, just close by
Through an open door
I'ma going home
I'm just going home.....
Going home, going home
Dude Look At The Next Set... It's Narlly!!
Obviously, the world lost a love.
My sympathies to his family and friends. I'm sure he'll be missed.
oh Wow! How sad that such a loving, kind man, so young died after helping so many folks after the storm "Sandy". If, there's solace to remember and keep from his life and passing is that he helped mankind. What better Name to leave behind....he Loved!!!
Merry Christmas, Seabreezin'. Yes, who can argue with the poor quality of the writing, and especially the research of the staff here. Probably all under 40, never schooled where/when an "A" was an "A", and all accustomed to being awarded prizes and medals for merely showing up and trying. But all importantly, their sense of self worth and importance are tree top high, I would aver. Yes, as often, they leave out the good stuff. But perhaps this ain't all bad. When they start to wax large, the filler tends to be mostly left wing bias. Best to you and yours in 2013. Aa.
maybe w/ all of his ggod deeds GOD felt it was time 2 bring him into his kingdom. death is not the end; it's the beginning! condolensces to his friends and family. he was what a THRUE HERO IS: ONE WHOM RISKED HIS OWN LIFE TO SAVE OTHERS!!!!! hero is used way too much and inproperly, not in this case. may God bless him and his, amen.
pleez forgive typos!
How sad to lose just a great person at this time of year. My condolences to his friends and family. Seems only the good die young. God bless.
RIP young man, Life does not seem fair for this family.
For all ya'll Liberals, Lets Ban Surf Boards!!!!
That is so sad, to have someone courageous and brave like that (and not be in the military) to risk his own life to help others and then have to die. My deepest condolences to his family. God bless!
It is said "the good die young." Whether he was good-looking or not, kudos to his parents (or whomever raised him) for raising such an unselfish guy. My heart aches for them.
I am beginning to think it is true that the good die young. Dylan was the perfect example. God Bless you Dylan.
The more than ten times that I have survived death has not being due to anything of myself like my skill or who I am in and out of myself, but it has been the mercy and the grace of the Lord. It is written that because of lack of knowledge of the Lord, specially His ways, His people perish! You would be astounded or may not believe that the vast majority of Jews and Christians do not know the scriptures well!. I would dare to say that they may know it in an inaccurate manner and even so it would constitute perhaps no more than 10% of the scriptures. I have yet to see a movie that is 100% according to the scriptures. There is much they leave out in these movies and even preacher's sermons do not cover that much! and some is even changed of the scriptures in those movies! It not surprising that the majority of the Lord's move on earth today is getting this word forged into as many as possible in the form of unadulterated Spiritual food. And it is of no surprise also that Satan focuses in preventing this from happening. May the Lord open the eyes of those whom He wills to see!
Live like you mean it!
He looks like a really nice guy. Earth is poorer, but Heaven is richer. Sympathies to his family and friends. Just imagine what our world would be like if it was filled with people like Dylan Smith. Dylan was all we should aspire to be. What an incredibly powerful positive force his spirit is. Notice I say is, because the spirit is eternal. He lives on in a much better place, a place better suited for the selfless.
The good die young.
Not necessarily LunaAzule....
Wow, that kind of sucks. But in a way, kind of cool, too...and by that, I mean he saved a lot of lives, which is really wonderful, and it sounds like he may have (unfortunately) died doing something he loved. And just in the fact that not many of us get to say we did either...well, that's kind of cool. If you're going to go out, that is.
Still. This sucks. :(
