Mother, four kids die in Oklahoma City house fire

A mother and her four children died in an early-morning house fire in Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

The children – three girls and a boy – were between the ages of 2 and 8, said Major Tammy McKinney, spokesperson for the Oklahoma City Fire Department. A man, the mother’s boyfriend, is in critical condition at an area hospital.

The fire was accidental, McKinney said, caused by a space heater being too close to combustibles.

There were no functioning smoke detectors in the house, she said.

Rockyroad-531554, we need to educate people and give people an outlet to turn to when hard times hit that they need to use a space heater. Depending on tenant laws in a municapality, heating may or may not be included. So much is at stake when people cannot afford to turn on the heat, but enough oil to get them through the winter months and so forth. We, as a rich nation, do very little for the poor in this country. I suppose heat is only for the rich folks who can afford it?? The number of those who leach of the government is below 1%, yet the ones who commit fraud against the government entities that should be available to anyone who truely needs it is is far greater. Those who commit the fraud are the ones entrusted to help the poor!!

BTW, you should have asked for some common sense and courtesty!! Fire was not invented to kill. On the otherhand, guns were...since that is where you are taking this topic!! Like I said...get some common sense or lay off the pot so you stop losing brain cells.

Rockyroad, wrong article to fight the gun ban fight.

All you can do is pray for the little ones and hope other adults take away some small idea of what not to do.

it just gets harder and harder to have compassion for people who do stupid thingsh that harm their kids these days.

Just the tiniest inkling of common sense used and those little ones would still be alive and enjoying their Christmas gifts tody.

It's things like Rockyroad that should be banned from keyboards. Anyone stupid enough to equate anything but guns to murder needs help. YES people die other ways but GUNS WERE MADE FOR KILLING! IT'S WHAT THEY ARE FOR! The only was a gun 'accidentally' kills someone is if it just goes off on its own.

I've heard the same comment in way to many news stories and from all income groups as well, the home did not have any working smoke detectors.

Why is it that people all over seem to forget about that smoke detector? I'm sure there cell phones had good battieries in them, there other electronics were all working but the one item in any home that could possibly have saved more lives than anything else they owned was'nt either working or even present in the home and almost all of these stories the people had kids and all those kids were depending on there parents to care for them properly.

I don't have the answers but I wish everyone would think about all the dangers we all face daily and use their brains and get smoke detectors because when fire happens it will kill faster than almost any bullet and its not a pretty death.

Make sure you have smoke detectors, heck most fire stations give them away if you cannot afford to buy one. Use your brains people and protect your family.

May all the people who perished in the fire RIP.

Here's a new idea, Maybe all cell phones should come with a built in smoke detector! That way no one would die in a fire again as it seems like there phones are more important than smoke detectors are. Hopefully it happens.

Julieanne, why do you automatically assume they can't afford heat? We use a space heater in our kitchen because we have large patio doors leading out to the deck and the cold air comes in around the doors. Ok, maybe that is why they were using the space heater, but so many people on these posts jump to conclusions without knowing half the facts. It's very irritating.

I assumed the same thing Julie did. 4 young children...no smoke alarms..boyfriend. We are hoping that if they lost their lives because of heat being shut off....that is something we don't want to see. If you can't help your young children...SPEAK UP! Don't put them at risk. But as you say...a cat could have knocked over a box or something combustible. We don't know the facts.

Sad sad sad. If there is one thing that people should take away from this, it's that smoke (and CO2) detectors save lives.

A lot of fire departments give away free smoke detectors. Everyone should make a habit to change the batteries whenever they change time!

I understand your attempt at being clever. However, at my place of employment, we have MANY space heater requirements that we are expected to follow to safeguard the facility and persons from the threat of fire. Maybe these requirements should be sanctioned in residences, expecially if renting. BTW, you are an idiot!

LisaLaShe,Space heaters should not be allowed in a place of business.I cannot tell you how many times I have been a business to do the cleaning and people have left these heaters on near the jacket hanging over their chair.Their insurance company would have a fit if they saw this.My condolences tho this woman and her children.

I have a friend who works with the mother of the children who died in this fire... it wasn't the mom and the kids... it was the grandmother and the grand-kids... nonetheless... still very sad and all the ridiculous and non-compassionate comments should be kept to one's self and not put on display.

now adays i wouldn't b surprised if the firemen don't show up @ all, being shot at and killed doing their jobs which are risky enuf as is! it is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to these poor people. however, if ur too cheap 2 purchase fire detectors u put ur life at risk 4 a few well spent $'s. in orlando, the firemen went door 2 door giving out free smoke detectors, and even installed them 4 those who couldn't do it themselves. this reminds me the fine of the vonage ad with print disclaimer that their "911" does not work the same as 'TRADITIONAL 911"!!! PEOPLE R RISKING THEIR LIVES TO SAVE A FEW MEASLY BUCKS. already i'm aware of one case where their "911" cost people their lives!!!!!!
