Mumbling woman sought after man crushed by NYC subway

Police are looking for a woman who was seen mumbling to herself before she allegedly pushed an unsuspecting man to his death in front of an oncoming No. 7 train at a Queens subway station Thursday evening, police said.

The man was standing on the northbound platform of the 40th Street and Queens Boulevard elevated train when police say the woman walked up behind him and pushed him onto the tracks. Witnesses told police the man had his back to the woman and didn't appear to notice her. No words were exchanged.

The man died at the scene. His identity has not been released.

Witnesses told police the female suspect had been walking back and forth on the platform and talking to herself before sitting down, alone, on a wooden bench near the north end of the walkway. When the train pulled into the station shortly after 8 p.m., the woman got up off the bench and pushed the man, according to witness statements.

The suspect then fled the platform, running down a flight of stairs to the turnstile area and down a second flight to Queens Boulevard. It's unknown where she went from there. Police released surveillance video of her running onto the street.

The suspect is described as being a heavyset woman about 5 feet 5 inches tall with brown or blond hair. She was wearing a white and gray ski jacket and Nike sneakers at the time of the incident.

It is the second time this month that a person has been shoved onto subway train tracks and killed.

Naeem Davis, a 30-year-old deli worker, was recently arrested and charged with second-degree murder for allegedly pushing a man off a midtown subway platform to his death.

Ki-Suk Han, 58, was stuck by a southbound Q train after being pushed off the platform at the 49th Street station in Manhattan Dec. 3.

When the government doesn't provide shelter and therapy for its indigent (or financially sufficient for that matter) mentally ill, we can expect bizarre and tragic events such as the recent subway deaths and Sandy Hook. We've got money to give away to foreign governments whose people want to kill us but no money for our own needy.

Duh! Come on people, common sense. If you go into the subway and see the mumbling and pacing crazy person, don't turn your back while standing by the edge.

Half the people in NYC are mumbling to themselves and pacing in the subways.

NYC will soon implement a ban on subways, since more people are being murdered by trains than by guns in the nanny state.

So many, many rabid, vicious two legged animals roam our streets. Sadly, the deadly violence a daily occurrence across our nation.

yes 77 but there are just as many slack azz out there who will see this happen and stand and watch as the vicious two leg legs it into the next county and do nothing to try and stop them from running

This is tragic but people have to stop being complacent and be aware of their surroundings.I see homeless people who appear to be mentally ill talking, singing to themselves and trying to panhandle downtown where I live in a small community.I stay yards away from them because you never know when the voices in their head tells them to do something violent.

I'm thinking this woman violated the ban on large beverages...was having a sugar rush...and was just working off excess energy...the cops need to be looking for a couple of large beverage cups to trace back to the store that sold them to the woman...Mayor Bloomberg's on the job...

What no one wants to admit is that when we cover these heinous crimes on the news, we give insights to other crazy nutjobs who otherwise, might never have thought of doing the same crimes. If the people who do these things never got any attention for it, less people will do it.

You're saying that after reading this, one of us might feel the sudden urge to go talk to ourselves and pace in a subway?

It depends on what you mean by "us." Realize that quite a few number of "us" already have mental issues and are more or less attention whores. In that context, yes, these stories will inspire the exact sort of actions they're reporting on.

The real problem is that for the last 35 years or so we have decided that we can't afford to remove mentally anguished people from our streets and get them the help they need. Instead, we turn them loose to commit crimes so that we can feed the criminal justice system and the prison industry.

Entering the station at 5 mph is a good idea, why doesn't the MTA think of that ....

Watch. They will find this woman. She will have some sort of mental illness and hadn't taken her medication. She will be bi-polar. Or manic-depressive. Or something. I know that they will play the "mental illness" card somewhere along the way, totally overlooking the fact that she's just a bitch.

I have worked in the mental illness field for many years (now i don't) and find them all selfish, self-centered, needy, greedy and truly just a waste of time.

New York Metropolitan Transit Authority should have already put some kind of contingency plan in place, which drastically reduces the speed of the train as it enters any station, instead of entering at the normal speed, and that should not be difficult to establish. I remember being pushed around, and on occasions very close to passing trains entering NY subway stations, by a-holes pushing their way through rush hour crowds, wanting to enter the train even before it stopped. One thing is for sure, I was always very aware of my surroundings when standing in a train station platform, something that this individual may not have been. R.I.P.

The sad fact is that this is a mental health issue, not guns or subway cars or knives but mentally ill people who are put back out into society because the States and Federal Government don't want to pay for their care!!!

How did they get that way in the first place? This is what everyone is afraid to look at. Parts could be genetic, but I would bet most is upbringing in a society that believes that if it feels good just do it.

We have lost our morality as a Nation and when that happens, just look back at history to see the outcome. The Buddhists believe the Bible is a book of prophecies----If so, we need look no further, it happened time and time again in those stories. It makes no difference what so ever who wrote them, or if there even is a God. What we should be aware of are the stories they tell us and what happens when we brake the rules.

What is it with this mental illness crap...it's written in the founding documents that all men are created equal and have the right to pursue life, liberty and happiness...if it makes gang bangers happy to shoot each other...if this woman was happy pushing the victim on the train track...why is it that all liberals want to do is put everyone in jail or a hospital that doesn't fit their idea of happiness...people just think what they think...why is it somehow a mental illness if someone doesn't think your way...and anyway which one is crazy...the pointee or the pointer...

Gun owners have rights. The mentally ill have rights. Homeless have rights.

Where's my right to take a subway, send my kids to school or just go out my front door without someone mumbling? That's my happiness, and the courts have taken it away.

We once had a mental health system that could keep people who can't care for themselves off the street. We took away that commitment ability long before Reagan. It's time to bring it back so that normal people can have some rights.

Time to ban subways. You could easily push 10 people into the path of an oncoming train and then jump yourself. Civilized societies should have no trains or subways. Our forefathers never intended for everyone to ride subways. The US has more subway murders than all the other countries in the world especially those without subways. I've proved my point, so now ban them. Either that or everyone who rides the subway should have to buy a license, be trained (no pun intended) and buy insurance.

hang these criminals by the neck until dead in public was the old and... effective deterence.

perhaps times square gallows would give the insane the needed fear of shame and punishment.

Oh, but the cult of personalities would be offended, not to mention people everywhere watching on the internets and television.

hmm just don't stand next to the edge...
