Rocket launchers surface during Los Angeles guns buyback

A Los Angeles police officer displays a rocket launcher turned in during a gun buyback effort on Thursday.

When Los Angeles police moved up their annual Citywide Gun Buyback program to this week, they collected an arsenal that included 75 assault weapons, 698 rifles, 363 shotguns, 901 handguns and — more surprisingly — two rocket launchers.


The weapons, essentially long metal tubes once capable of firing rockets, lacked the projectiles and parts needed to fire them, but even so had no place on the streets, police said.

"Those are weapons of war, weapons of death," said LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, according to the Los Angeles Times. "These are not hunting guns. These are not target guns. ... they have no place in our great city."

Police said the people who brought in the weapons told police that they came from family members who served in the military and no longer wanted rocket launchers in their homes, the Times reported.


LAPD was planning to check with the military to determine the origins of the launchers, police said.

As it turns out, these were not the first launchers to turn up at a gun buyback. Last May, when the event was timed for Mother's Day, one of these large firearms surfaced in Los Angeles.

This year, the total number of weapons turned in was 400 more than last year, despite the event being moved forward by several months in response to the recent mass shootings at Newtown, Conn., Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said, speaking on Thursday. 

Declaring the annual buyback a success, and an important piece of the city's violence reduction efforts, Villaraigosa said:

Assault weapons and even two rocket launchers were included among the firearms handed over to Los Angeles police. NBC's Natalie Morales reports.

Perhaps the greatest testament to the success of the program was "the 166 weapons surrendered by residents in exchange for nothing. They just gave them back."

Most people received grocery store gift cards for turning in weapons — up to $200 per firearm, depending on the type.

Heading into the New Year celebration, Villaraigosa issued a warning to Angelenos who chose to keep their guns: "Firing a gun in the air is a felony."

"Don't fire your guns in celebration. But if you do in the city of Los Angeles, we will go after you. If you do it in the county, the sheriff will go after you."

Of coarse they have rocket launchers. The NRA logic says they need semiautomatic weapons with large mags in case the have to fight the US government. Using that logic, Wayne and his NRA nuts probably believe in the right of citizens to possess tactical nuclear weapons. How else could they go up against the government.

Read the story again,someone that had been in the military had them not a dumb ass off the streets, and as for the rest of the guns im sure no gang banger or any other nut job turned theirs in, more than likely alot of those guns were from drug stings and other police raids that were turned in by police members dressed as civilans to make the ass mayor look good,dont believe every thing you read!

The rocket launcher you see here is a "trainer" this is pure propaganda. You can tell by the YELLOW RING. GET A F-ING CLUE! If anything they should arrest the guy for selling a non functional replica/trainer as a real firearm. That is fraud.

If not, I'm gonna start buying up replica's and selling them for a profit to the police. Sounds like this is fine with them as long as it helps strip us of rights.

Guy: Seems to me the Syrian rebels are doing just fine against the Syrian government, despite having no heavy weaponry to speak of. When you've got popular support, you don't necessarily need to have tanks, fighter planes or nuclear weapons. Depending on the circumstances, a bunch of assault rifles may be all it takes.

These aren't "rocket launchers" - One is a LAW (Light Anti-Tank Weapon) and one is an AT-4, which replaced the LAW in the late 80s.

Both are single-shot rounds of ammunition designed to fire from the right shoulder.

“Light anti-armor weapons are issued as rounds of ammunition,” according to Army Field Manual 3.23.25, (which covers the LAW and AT-4).

Basically, they are worthless, unless you're a collector, then you can find them online for $300. They can't fire squat anymore.

They should have used that $400 to buy more assault weapons to get them off the streets.

That's why LA is broke, those two things are worthless, couldn't even convert them to a potato gun.... its just a tube with no component's on it, even if it had all the components they where de-commissioned 15 years ago,,,,, NO AMMO. Anyone that has a gun that is worth anything will sell it to others that will pay a far market value.... Fact is, guns just laying around are exactly the type that end up in the wrong hands on the street. In fact, having guns is a prime attraction to being robbed. What exactly is YOUR problem? My God - most people will believe anything as long as it comes from the media. First off - yes those are training devices that the U.S. Military uses and they can not be used to fire any sort of projectile. Second - Los Angeles has had these gun buy-back programs for years and it has not reduced violent crime one iota. Most of the guns come from families that have had a member die and they don't know what to do with them. The guns that get turned in by these people usually sit on shelves until the LAPD can get media coverage of the so called "Buy Back" program. California is the most liberal state in the union and of course they will misconstrue the facts to make themselves look like they are doing the whole country some good.

IN some areas they are trying to give gift certificates because all the people were doing was dumping their old guns and would use the cash to buy newer better ones. These guns are assets of the people who life in that state and as such cannot be destroyed without our say so. I say we have gun fairs in Police dept parking lots all across the country. We resell the guns back to the public and deposit the money in the general fund.

One of the arguments for not giving up the large mags that made it possible to blow away 20 kindergartners and first graders is that these gun nuts might have to fight the US Government some day. IN REALITY!! This is a big huge government "ACT" to make the uneducated gun population believe that they have just uncovered "deadly destructive devices". Not so, these are nothing more then a fake item never meant to shoot anything. You could buy these items on EBAY, as they are INERT!!

I am a licensed (ATF) dealer in this rype of devices (if they were real) I could actually buy and sell this in the real working versions. But these are basically fakes!!

That's not the NRA's logic, that was the Founders' logic. Read them once in a while instead of listening to talking heads lie to you about what they intended. The ENTIRE purpose for the 2nd Amendment, with only Adams disagreeing (a man who limited free speech while in office and thought the militias should help the government impose tyranny as long as it was law; because Adams was a legal fetishist), was NOT to defend yourself and your property, NOT to hunt, and NOT to sport shoot...it WAS to deter government from becoming tyrannical, and if it did become tyrannical, to overthrow it by force of arms.

Sure the rocket launchers are useless to begin with. Sure some of the guns were already turned in last year or held on to by some rare crooked law enforcer to pad the total and groceries. Sure many are broken and not worth a nickle to resell.

But as long as they used some 'Angelenos' drug confiscated money to buy back even one gun found by some mother under her kids mattress that otherwise she wouldn't know what to do with for fear of the law or whatever. The program, until they mention tax dollars, is worth it to have that avenue for a citizen who is stuck with something they or anyone else in their home should not have.

So if this is what pass as gun control, and gives all the anti gunners that warm fuzzy feeling they haven't had since walking past a gun store and pissing their pants with media induced fears. I say don't knock it until they try to use our tax dollars, until then let them have at it, rat a tat tat, oh sorry didn't mean to make you mess yourself!

And it may come to that one day. Not the nukes, but in case this government decides to take total control over every thing. Which that have been slowly doing over time. Little by little. SO tiny that most dont see our freedoms going away, and as new generations come in, they grow up with the new changes and never know what it was like to have real freedoms and less government control on everything.

Our governments main purpose was to protect our borders, over time it now has its nose into every thing. Regulations, laws, rules, permits for every thing.

Out of curiousity, which weapons does the NRA oppose in the hands of American citizens?

If we are to do battle with the most powerful fighting force in the history of mankind (our military) how can we do that with nothing more than automatic weapons?

These are spent rocket launchers/laws that have no functional purpose other than a conversation piece. I question plenty. Especially the intelligence and motives of some of the people posting on Newsvine. You guys act like Fast and Furious was some great conspiracy to funnel guns to Mexico when in fact it had good intentions but had major flaws in the carrying out of it that led to bad people getting powerful guns. But of course it's been turned into yet another conspiracy to match the FEMA camps, martial law signs accidentally seen, and the upcoming seizure of all privately owned firearms that Obama is supposedly planning.

For once, I'd just love to see someone post a plausible scenario in which the US government can successfully carry out these 'plans'.

It is, at best, the expended tube of an live AT4. At worst, it is a live 84mm HE Shaped Charge Anti Tank Projectile. Very dangerous to anything in American Law Enforcement.

I've got several weapons that were handed down to me from my grandfather when he came back from fighting in Europe under Patton. They include an ivory grip Luger pistol taken from the Nazi officer he killed. You bed wetting gunaphobes out there can go pound sand! And I'm in the middle of purchasing two AR-15s, several 30 round clips, and a couple of handguns with high capacity magazines. Didn't plan on spending that kind of money, but I am because I still can before the fascist left wing crackdown. Just because 99.9% of legal gun owners do not commit atrocities and crimes with them does not mean that the .01% who do should mean that EVERYONE should be without guns. That's the most assinine, childish, knee-jerk reactionary mentality one could ever have on any issue for that matter. But what am I saying: the same liberals that support that mentality supported destroying the health care industry because 15% didn't have a health insurance plan.

    Folks, before you cite a historical figure, please do your reading first! I pay little attention to the talking heads on TV, because most of them are spouting nonsense (both libs and cons). Folks, if you want to know, you have to READ. Read the original documents. Read the comments of those who wrote those documents. Read about the world they lived in, and why the believed so strongly in an individual right to - worship as he chose, read what he chose, say what he chose, assemble with whom he chose, whether or not to be armed, freedom from government interference within his home and person, etc. Don't listen to the modern talking heads, read your history.

    It wasn't an individual right, huh? I think I've heard this bad revisionism elsewhere. Before I link you to the quotes by the Founders (which is more valuable than some blog), I'd mention NOT ONE RIGHT was collective under classical liberalism (the philosophy both the Federalists and Anti-Federalist Parties who Founded the nation subscribed too). Classical liberalism is a strictly individualist philosophy in which all rights are negative (they make no positive claims on others, they only say to what you MAY NOT be subjected to, as opposed to what you are entitled to), individual, unalienable (which literally means 'not subject to border or law"), and natural (you get them by virtue of being human, not through citizenship).

    Now, can you see why ONLY individual rights existed to them? If not go read up on classical liberalism and each Founders understanding of it. No right acknowledged in (not granted by) the Constitution and Declaration of Independence is anything but individual. There is no such thing as a collective right. Even in today's law there are no such things as "black rights", "white rights", "women's rights", "men's rights", "gay rights", or "straight rights"...those are collectivist tersm that have no meaning. What people in those movements are seeking are full and equal natural negative unalienable INDIVIDUAL rights. They don't want special group rights, logically...they want the same rights as everyone else, some of which they are being denied.

    The original intent and purpose of the Second Amendment was to preserve and guarantee, not grant, the pre-existing right of individuals to keep and bear arms.     did not view the right to keep arms as being confined to active militia members:

    What plan for the regulation of the militia may be pursued by the
    national government is impossible to be foreseen...The project of disciplining
    all the militia of the United States is as futile as it would be injurious if it
    were capable of being carried into execution... Little more can reasonably be
    aimed at with the respect to the people at large than to have them properly
    armed and equipped ; and in order to see that this be not neglected, it will
    be necessary to assemble them once or twice in the course of a year.

    Hamilton clearly states there exists a right of self-defense against a
    tyrannical government, and it includes the people with their own arms and adds:

    [T]he people, without exaggeration, may be said to be entirely
    the masters of their own fate. Power being almost always the rival of power, the
    general government will at all times stand ready to check the usurpations of the
    state governments, and these will have the same disposition towards the general
    government. The people by throwing themselves into either scale, will
    infallibly make it preponderate. If their rights are invaded by either, they can
    make use of the other as the instrument of redress. How wise will it be in
    them by cherishing the union to preserve to themselves an advantage which can
    never be too highly prized!

    You'll notice I'm purposefully quoting one of the most ardent advocates of tyranny among the Founders; Hamilton. He wanted taxes over 50%, Governors to be appointed by the President for life, the President to serve for life, and the States to just be districts of the federal state as opposed to sovereign nations that they were under both the non-governmental period of the Revolution, the Articles of Confederation, and the voluntary Union under the original intent of the Constitution as interpreted in the State Ratifying Conventions (where Madison, its author, suggested we look in the future - our present - for interpretation of its original intent), etc. So if HE of all people knew it to be an individual right and for the expressed purpose of overthrow of an illegititmtate state, then so did everyone else....although yout can see that for yourself by READING history instead of blogs.

    There are 3 ways the Second Amendment is usually interpreted to deny it was intended to protect an individual right to keep and bear arms:

    • It protects a state's right to keep and bear arms.

    • The right is individual, but limited to active militia members because the militia clause narrows the right's scope.

    • The term "people" refers to the people collectively, rather than the people as individuals.

    Yet, three jurists, who were contemporaries of the Founders, and wrote constitutional commentaries, read the Second Amendment as protecting a private, individual right to keep arms. There is no contrary evidence from that period (see Guncite's Is there contrary evidence? and Second Amendment challenge).

    Instead of the "right of the people," the Amendment's drafters could have referred to the militia or active militia members, as they did in the Fifth Amendment, had they meant to restrict the right. (Additionally, see GunCite's page here showing evidence that the term, "people," as used in the Bill of Rights, referred to people as individuals.)

    It strains credulity to believe the aforementioned three jurists misconstrued the meaning of the Second Amendment.

    The only model that comports with all of the evidence from the Founding period is the one interpreting the Second Amendment as protecting an individual right for a collective purpose. The militia clause and the right to keep and bear arms were intended to be complementary.

    Perversely, gun rights defenders are accused of creating a Second Amendment myth, when it is some present-day jurists and historians who have failed to give a full account of the historical record.

    "Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretence, raised in the United States. A military force, at the command of Congress, can execute no laws, but such as the people perceive to be just and constitutional; for they will possess the power, and jealousy will instantly inspire the inclination, to resist the execution of a law which appears to them unjust and oppressive."

    Let me close with Jefferson:

    The British ministry have so long hired their gazetteers to repeat and model into every form lies about our being in anarchy, that the world has at length believed them, the English nation has believed them, the ministers themselves have come to believe them, and what is more wonderful, we have believed them ourselves. Yet where does this anarchy exist? Where did it ever exist, except in the single instance of Massachusets? And can history produce an instance of a rebellion so honourably conducted? I say nothing of it's motives. They were founded in ignorance, not wickedness. God forbid we should ever be 20. years without such a rebellion.[1] The people can not be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. We have had 13. states independant 11. years. There has been one rebellion. That comes to one rebellion in a century and a half for each state. What country ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? LET THEM TAKE ARMS. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure.

    He was supporting rioting and open rebellion by way of individuals having arms, not a militia, because he thought if that was to happen even every 20 years (a generation to Jefferson) that would be preferable to maintaining liberty as opposed to a docile and strictly law-abiding public that easily accepted tyranny by way of legilslated rules and regulations (laws). The Massachusetts riot he is refering to was not a militia...it was Shays' Rebellion. The militia fought AGAINST the rebels. What were they rioting about? They were veterans of the Revolution...and they remained unpaid despite lies by General Washington that promised them their pay. While they waittetdt tont tpatyt that never came, their banks began foreclosing on their lands, and the tax collectors began seizing and liquidating their properties for unpaid taxes...all of which was not the fault of these veterans who helped win our Indepdence from England, but the fault of the government who was not paying them what they owed. Instead of telling the tax services and banks to wait until these men were paid what they were owed for their service, the government conducted the FIRST BANK BAILOUT. They saw an economic recession post-war, and decided to let the banks seize these veterans property instead of letting a few bad bankers fail. This led to the rebellion, which made a convenient reason for the feds to file charges against these men and claim they were owed nothing because of "treason". So said the same treasonist men who just a few monthes earlier had fought with these veterans to win Independence. Treason founded this nation, plain and simple. They turned their backs on the people and went into the pocket of the banks...and history is repeating itself today.

    Even Adams, the legal fetishist, at first was sympathetic to the rebels. He knew the taxes were "heavier than the People could bear." His cousin Sam Adams however wanted the rioters executed...which wasn't even the punishment under monarchism.

    They "had to" suspend habeas corpus to fight the rebellion.

    The excuse is made that this is why we needed a stronger federal govt (Constitution vs Articles of Confederation)...but the reason they couldn't raise an army was because these men weren't being paid! Not because they didn't have the authority or needed a draft (which didn't get put in place until Lincoln...and even then it was tyrannical, as all conscription is, albeit for a good cause). The truth is, the only good reason for the Constitution at all was the need to get rid of tariffs between the States that was shrinking the economy (by shrinking total trade) and causing the recession post-war. The Constitution's commerce clause was originally intended to ONLY ctreate a uniform weights and measures (to stop fraud) and to create a nationwide free trade zone.

    Most of te rioters eventually escaped to nearby States and lived in hiding, despite attempts to extradite them to Massachusetts for trial.

    Some of you would have sided with the state...but I would have been with the rioters. Tyranny of the domestic state is no better than tyranny of the foreign state. Tyranny is tyranny. Jeffetrson supported individuals owning weapons so they could rise up at any time, even against the militia, and overthrow tyranny...even if they failed he would expect them to be pardoned.

    What is "laughable" (not really, but just using your word to focus this point) is the consuming paranoia which appears to control your thinking as is very much evidenced by your post, above; and that your very identity - your sense of self - is tied to guns, as evidenced by your chosen screen name.

    Have you considered counselling? It's really not necessary and definitely not healthy to live your life consumed by irrational fears and insecurities and the presumption that if you drop your guard for a moment, or find yourself unarmed, you are destined to be a victim of crime.

    Normal, clear-thinking human beings do not live with such fears and insecurities in their daily lives. They awaken each morning ready to take the day at face value, and looking forward to the pleasures and new-found joys of interacting with ever-changing situations and different people in their lives; free from the presumption that those individuals wish to do them harm, and those situations will lead to peril.

    We only live once (as far as we know). Why not enjoy every moment of our lives instead of diminishing those moments through insecurity about the unknown, and fear of what may lurk in the shadows. The shadows are usually only occupied by other fearful people who are hiding from the light.

      arrested. Consult a lawyer before you surrender in a gun to one of those
      programs. The media does not mention the dozens of arrests of some of the
      participants surrendering their guns because if they did, no one would
      participate.

        Actually Driving may be considered a right as the Constitution clear states in Amendment 9. But it is my understanding of those who wrote it, meant that the right should be made by amendment to the Constitution. Just like all the other things the Government does like Social Security, the ACA etc, these things are outside the 10th amendment. And the SCOTUS should have kicked them back to the people to make it an amendment to the Constitution to allow it, instead of doing it by caveat.

        I just saw that the population of the US of A has now reached 315 million. I think that we as an open-society country have a pretty good track record. There will always be a few nut jobs that will kill innocent people and unfortunately even small children and then commit suicide. There is no perfect answer to prevent this from happening. Let's just be aware of those around us, notify authorities when appropriate, and give thanks for our everyday freedom that our nation gives us.             On Sunday, David Gregory showed to the nation what the laws banning the fire-arms in question would do. On "Meet the Press", he displayed a high capacity magazine. In the show was taped in Washington DC, which already has a law in place locally that does not allow high capacity magazine. So in showing the item he has broken a law.             Someone was referring to the second amendment and it's limiting scope as applied to ownership of arms. Unfortunately our court system has upheld that the word "MILITIA" really means individuals. Such a finding has to be the work of the crazed zealots that buy anything that can fire a bullet and kill something.

            Those same zealots are sick with obsession about maintaining their right to kill "just in case IT happens" as if our own government is coming to take their arsenals.

            @U.S.Aviator - You do not know what you are talking about. Part of the gun buyback program is that they do not record which weapon was turned in by what person. They specifically say that they will NOT use these events to try and find guns that have been used in crimes and prosecute the person turning it in. In fact, at most of these turn ins you do not even have to give your name, you simply give them the gun and they give you the gift card (or in some cases cash). Please educate yourself and stop spreading misinformation about things you obviously know nothing about.

Why not just allow free and unfettered buying of any and all types of weapons?If Bubba Smith wants to head down to the Piggly Wiggly and pick himself up a couple of M-60's and a half dozen loaded AT-4's, let him. Adam Lanza murdered 26 kids in 11 to 14 minutes of shooting. Approx 50 to 100 rounds. Do we need that type of weapon or those 30 round clips? It's a weapon made for killing humans. Not hunting. Not for sport though I'm sure it's probably fun as hell to shoot. But some of you are here flat out refusing to consider banning that kinda weapon. That it's the shooter, not the gun. I say it's both. If we weren't allowed to own them, yes he would have picked another gun. One not quite as efficient as the Bushmaster. Maybe if he only had the option of handguns and 7 round mags he wouldn't have been able to fire as many rounds in that short amount of time.

            You folks need to stop with the blind rhetoric. You wonder why we're about to jump off this fiscal cliff? It's because people like you have decided that it's your way and no other. To you, to compromise is not an option anymore.

            Here it is in part:

            District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008), was a landmark case in which the Supreme Court of the United States held that the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects an individual's right to possess a firearm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home and within federal enclaves.

            And the Chicago Lawsuit: 2010

            The decision extended the court's 2008 ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller that "the Second Amendment protects a personal right to keep and bear arms for lawful purposes, most notably for self-defense within the home." That decision applied only to federal laws and federal enclaves such as Washington; it was the first time the court had said there was an individual right to gun ownership rather than one related to military service.

            So your argument that the 2nd is a "Collective" Right of the State is no longer valid. Please do try to keep up with current events.

            Hey Dave...babies aren't killed by abortion, fetuses are. Oh unless you're one of the people who believe life begins at conception? Then if that's the case, why does God abort babies? 1 out of 4 babies are killed by god...we just called them miscarriages. That's just the number of identified pregnancies that end in miscarriage.             The dangers of having a
            Standing Army

            Standing armies were
            very unpopular to the colonists and to many Europeans because Europe had seen
            many armies come to power that ended up ruling over the people. Instead of
            having standing armies, the colonists would train together for purposes of

            I believe in the right to bear arms but I also believe these buy back programs are a good thing too. It allows people who have guns they bough in their youth or inherited but no long want around their home to get some value for them. Maybe they feel they can't be responsible or that they have children or grandchildren in the home that can't be trusted. But one of the best things about these gun buy back programs has always been the "no questions asked policy". This helps get illegal guns off the street, some may have been stolen or used in a crime. And sure someone might get away with a crime but the gun is off the streets and even if it's the criminal who turns it in there's a good chance it's because the criminal has decided to go strait, and even if they fall back to their old ways at least they won't have that gun. But now these police have stated that they intend to violate this "no questions asked policy" by tracking down these weapons history and once the military is brought in on the investigation they will try to track down and prosecute anyone who stole these weapons. That means that the trust will be broken and anyone who ends up with a gun but does not know it's history will be afraid to turn it in. "Johnny is in jail and I found this gun among his things I want to turn it in but I don't want Johnny to get in any more trouble" so Johnny gets out and his gun is still there. Does anyone think these rocket launchers would have been turned in if people didn't trust in the "NO QUESTIONS ASKED POLICY" HELL NO !

                I had access to guns and ammunition from the age of ten. I was taught respect for firearms and the damage that they can inflict. I was taught about their safe usage by an NRA sponsored instructor. I was taught how guns can accidentally fire and how to avoid accidents. I was educated. Guess what? I have never had a firearm mishap. Education, keeping firearms out of households with mentally ill persons and enforcement of existing laws on the books are all that we need.

                Remember, the previous "assault weapons" ban did nothing to avert tragedy. Columbine occurred despite any bans. You can't ban evil and you can't ban stupid. All you can try to ban is the rights of the people to defend themselves from criminals as well as from an oppressive government.

                Try teaching children in school that there sometimes IS a good reason to fight. Stop our educators from punishing our children who do nothing other than fight back when attacked. If we had not raised generations of victims then perhaps 9/11 would not have been as successful. It took 3 planes being used for massive destruction before the passengers of the fourth plane put a stop to the madness.

                  I applaud your attempts at educating the ignorance, but as they say you can't fix stupid! Some people are deathly afraid of firearms and the people who choose to own them. I agree that if you wish to be a victim rather than kill in defense of yourself or someone else, I can respect your views, but as was said do not force your views on me. One thing I would like to see is that proof of completion of a gun safety course be required before every purchase of a firearm. I would also like to see a handgun self defense course required before any concealed carry permit be issued. Often, a person will purchase a gun because they fear their safety from criminals, but really have no conception of what it is to shoot someone. They end up freezing or unprepared and lose their gun to the criminal only to end up shot themselves. Like with any other tool, firearms require a sufficient amount of knowledge to be owned and used properly. Educating people should be the priority along with screening those with criminal records and destructive mental health issues. A diabetic or someone with epilepsy cannot hold a valid drivers license unless they go without a seizure for over a set period of time, the same can be done for minor mental health issues provided that the person appear periodically for examination. I agree with the founding fathers and their view towards firearms and fully support the second amendment. There are plenty of ways to screen the purchase of firearms to keep criminals and sick people from owning them. Fully automatic weapons are actually a case in point. It is possible to purchase, own, and fire full automatic weapons in this country, but you do need to obtain a federal firearms permit for each full auto weapon. The cost is high and the screening vigorous but it can be done. This has been the law since the 30's and has worked very well.

                          There is no changing the mind of a coward. You will maintain that you will be safer if there is a ban on certain guns. You think a law will protect you. You hope a law will protect you, because you are afraid to have the means at hand to defend yourself. Laws do not deter criminals. A perfect example, the failed 5 decade war on drugs. I don't care in which city or town or village you live, you can find illegal drugs for sale.

                          A ban on certain firearms would do nothing other than to turn some normally law abiding citizens into criminals, just as it did in California when they enacted their ridiculous ban.

I live six blocks from the AZ/Mexico border fence and I'll take my guns any day for defending myself and my family. I personally prefer handguns for self and home defense.                                               Just as with most of the original laws, this too has been massively abused. We originally held our land under what was called "Allodial Title". This meant property taxes did not exist. As the Banksters entered the picture, they were able to get things "attached" that allowed property taxes to take shape. At his point in time, I am just learning about what is out there regarding the topic. And as I am not well versed in this subject, the only thing I can say is, "Seek and ye shall find." {Something to do with a "bond" placed on the property.}

                                                  That's only half the problem. These days, reporters who are supposed to look into the facts, really get some information and fully disclose it, are too lazy to do it. I am against assault weapons and military weapons in civilian hands, but let's not go crazy here: These are empty fiberglass tubes. You can use them to fix your plumbing or support your deck if you want. As dangerous as a PVC pipe.

                                                  It really is a matter of choice, to arm or not to arm. It is a right, though not an obligation to do so, especially against fellow citizens. If communities choose to make a gesture to their neighbors of trust by un-arming themselves, I don't see a problem. The problem in my mind about guns in schools is that education is compulsary,not a choice, and may conflict with other peoples community lifestyle wishes.

                                                  I have never been in an armed Black church in my life, and I'm not six years old, in spite of what happened at Birmingham and the fact that gangbangers have no respect for sanctuary when an enemy has a church funeral. Some rights are better not exercised, like Freedom of Speech that negatively affects your business, voting for the lesser of two evils, when you don't believe in said evil, representing yourself in court, buying a house downwind of a pig farm, I could go on. Collateral deaths from urban gunfights is one of the big motivators for these type of events, not something that is evident in a legal gun community like Arizona not because of the guns, but because they don't have as many gunfights. We just have to examine the choices of why people exercise or abstain from a right and respect it accordingly.

                                                  I think the media should really start looking into what the hell they are reporting. Even the police have NO IDEA what that is. As a matter of fact, they are Anti-Tank Rocket Launcher or AT-4 in the military. It is a single use rocket tube and without the projectile.......it is basically useless. IT CANNOT BE RELOADED.                                                   We have a 'turn-in weapons for money' too. My question is what REALLY happens to those turned in? Some say they are destroyed, melted down, or resold. Is there an overall Govt agency (realizing this is a State/city issue) that keeps track of destroying them or do they sit in some warehouse forever or do they end up back out on the street? I'm all for getting ILLEGAL weapons off the street but if you legally owned and did this then you can now sign up to be a registered fool.                                                           To call these things rocket launchers and dangerous is absolute nonsense. They are as dangerous as empty shell casings. They are not reloaded, they are not recycled. Once the rocket is fired, the tube is left and discarded by the soldiers. And that is what the LAPD have in their possession. Empty rocket tubes. You can't buy the rockets and put them back in there, you can't rebuild them from a youtube video. I once was an infantry soldier trained in these weapons - they've been around for a couple of decades already. It's essentially a COMPLETELY inert fiberglass tube. Why this ends up on the front page of an national newscast is absurd beyond credibility. Why the "reporter" didn't bother to include this information in their "report" is beyond lazyness. I agree that military weapons should not be in civilian hands (bring the assault ban back!), but at the same time, please report facts. FULL facts, not just cherry-picked drivel.

                                                          This is honestly one of those examples of when reporting is highly politicized, intended to polarize people, and meant to distort basic facts. UNPROFESSIONAL, UNETHICAL, and LAZY.

                                                            If they brought those guns to a gun store, they would have received more and
                                                            cash money, not a gift card and gun stores don't ask questions. Also, there is
                                                            no amnesty, nor no questions asked, the police do ask questions and if the
                                                            firearm is or was involved in a crime, you are going to be arrested on the spot.
                                                            Doesn't matter if you found it or someone else gave it to you, if the ballistics
                                                            or serial number of any gun that is turned in was used in a felony crime in the
                                                            past regardless of who else did it, the person turning in the gun will be
                                                            arrested. Consult a lawyer before you surrender in a gun to one of those
                                                            programs. The media does not mention the dozens of arrests of some of the

I made the trigger from a stove ignition device, and had a place to attach the hair-spray can. I painted the thing camoflauge and even attached a fake (useless) scope of 3/4 inch pvc on top. It looked sweet! One time, I went camping with some friends in the mountains and had great fun shooting potatoes against the opposite canyon cliffs (environmentalists, don't worry, the only effect it had on nature was that the chipmunks over there probably got really fat from having so much pulverized potato to eat that summer). We took lots of pictures.

                                                              This was back in the day (way back) when the only way to get pictures was to drop the negatives off at a developing place and return a few days later for the photos. Well, when I returned to pick up my pictures I was told by the clerk that they had been given to authorities because of "suspicious activity". I went home and set the potato gun in the garage, fully expecting a knock on the door in the middle of the night. But I never heard a thing. Apparently there was someone in government who was smart enough to realize that the pictures were of a potato gun. The thing that really ticks me off is that I never got the photos on the same roll that showed the 30" brown trout that I caught on the same trip....

                                                              Police in the Mexican city of Hermosillo, Sonora found rocket launchers with everything set to go. They were found in the back of a SUV. Mexico does not manufacture any weapons so the rocket launchers came from the U.S. To my knowledge gun dealers do not sell rocket launchers equiped to fire the rocket. The only source was active duty military people. Thanks allot guys. Next time try to get your hands on some bio-chemical weapons.

                                                              Harry, have you ever heard of the Russian RPG? There are a lot more of those in Mexico than there are other types. You also may not be aware that many types of weapons have been provided to the Mexican military and police forces. In more instances than Mexico will admit to, Mexican armories have been raided for weapons by cartels and/or Mexican military weapons have been sold by the thousands on the black market by the Mexican military and police themselves. This is the main reason that the Mexican government is extremely hesitant to provide U.S. authorities with serial numbers of weapons captured from the cartels, as it would show the the incompetence and complicity of the Mexican military and police forces. AG Eric Holder knows this full well and uses it to full advantage in Obama's anti gun campaign, and in collusion with Mexican authorities when they claim all those guns came from the U.S. all right! They are just real careful to omit the above info to most of the American public. They also will not admit that many weapons that are captured actually come up from Central and South America from governments down there that we provide weapons to. Of course they were manufactured in America, but they were legally provided to foreign governments for their use.

                                                              I guess I should go down to the old Army surplus store & buy some decoration rocket launchers & turn them in for some gift cards. Boy, I'm sure glad they got those painted metal tubes off the street so I can sleep tonight. What a joke.

                                                              Unless the guns turned in are total junk I don't get why people turn them in for a cheap gift card or for free. I wouldn't turn in any of my guns even if they were offering full retail value for them.

                                                              Doesn't matter if you found it or someone else gave it to you, if the ballistics
                                                              or serial number of any gun that is turned in was used in a felony crime in the
                                                              past regardless of who else did it, the person turning in the gun will be
                                                              arrested. Consult a lawyer before you surrender in a gun to one of those
                                                              programs. The media does not mention the dozens of arrests of some of the
                                                              participants surrendering their guns because if they did, no one would
                                                              participate.

                                                                    If they brought those guns to a gun store, they would have received more and
                                                                    cash money, not a gift card and gun stores don't ask questions. Also, there is
                                                                    no amnesty, nor no questions asked, the police do ask questions and if the
                                                                    firearm is or was involved in a crime, you are going to be arrested on the spot.
                                                                    Doesn't matter if you found it or someone else gave it to you, if the ballistics
                                                                    or serial number of any gun that is turned in was used in a felony crime in the
                                                                    past regardless of who else did it, the person turning in the gun will be
                                                                    arrested. Consult a lawyer before you surrender in a gun to one of those
                                                                    programs. The media does not mention the dozens of arrests of some of the
                                                                    participants surrendering their guns because if they did, no one would
                                                                    participate.

They didn't use to, they were a good place to get rid of a hot weapon.
