Father, 9-year-old son die when surf pulls them into San Francisco waters

An adult man and a 9-year-old child died Friday after they were swept out to sea in the cold waters off the Golden Gate Bridge.

The coroner's office released the identities of the victim's Saturday morning.

The Marin County Sheriff's Office said Juan Escamillo-Rojas, 37, and his son Juan Carlos Escamillo-Monroy died after being swept out while fishing. They were both residents of San Francisco.

The U.S. Coast Guard found the two between Point Bonita and the Marin Headlands. A Coast Guard rescue boat and a Tiburon fire boat responded to the call for help, but with the water temperature a cold 53 degrees, the man and his son did not survive.

Officials says initially three people were swept out by the waters at Lower Fisherman’s around 4 p.m. Only one family member made it back to shore.

“It appears that one subject was able to get out of the surf and make a 911 call who coordinated the rescue units to a more precise location,” Randy Lavasseur, Law Enforcement Deputy Chief with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, said.

A Tiburon fire crew headed to the area for training and the U.S. Coast Guard searched the cold  water and found the pair 25 minutes later.

Locals call Lower Fisherman’s “Black Sands Beach.” Signs at the trail head warn of dangerous conditions. Park police say the picturesque spot turns dangerous quickly.

“If you look at the terrain right now, it’s very rocky, uneven, it’s slippery,” Lavasseur said. “If you go down into the water’s edge, the tides can move up and down and even before you know it your feet are up in water and you can be climbing rocks because that tide moves up so quickly.”

Investigators are still piecing together exactly how the incident happened.

May they rest in peace. At least dying doing something happy. I know that when I go, fishing is the way I want. But it is so sad... so much ahead for them. My kindest regards in Heaven the Eternal place of fisherman's delight.

And you KNOW this to be a fact because you've died before?

Well, you what it says: "Whatever a man thinketh, therefore he is."

You can buy into the: "We're all just wormfood" all you like, it's your choice. However, I believe we have a much higher purpose than being "wormfood." I don't need for you to understand that, much less justify my reasons for believing the way I do to any atheist here, so...

Anyway, my thoughts and PRAYERS are with their families tonight.

How very tragic two who loved each other so very much, have lost their lives.Taken far too soon from their journeys in life together. So much promise in the younger, left unfulfilled. So much wisdom and love to be shared by the older.Yet love is not wasted, its fruit has a promise that there is more still to come.Time on earth itself may be brief, but in eternity's measure an endless harvest will be gathered.

There are some folks who believe there is nothing after death staunchly claim,ly there's nothing after death.Holding themselves up as if the only one qualified with authority. When truly those who actually have died, would as such qualify. Instead of being respectful of others views, they insult them, belittling. They do themselves a disservice.Such behaviors show immaturity.

Others who seek to know of what is beyond ones death, will turn to prayer, religion, sacred writings, ancient texts or near death encounters.Still others have seen loved ones, who have appeared to them, at the moment of their death, though great distances apart. To leave words of comfort.Which those survivors will take to their graves as proof of life after death.Never sharing such sacred experiences with anyone.I suspect many people have things the world will never know of, for fear it would make fun of such events.

I hope the family will be surrounded by all those who love and care for them. That they will feel the support of their community around them, be given strength in the days to come.None of us gets through life, without struggles and storms at times.Yet, it is at such times, we discover how much others really care for us.

It's always sad to see things like this happen. I hope father and son are at peace and together.

It's equally sad to know there are so many lost, angry and hopeless people like Boozer. People who believe in nothing but themselves leaving them to believe in nothing at all because that is how they view themselves. Viewing the world through their own reflection of despair and loneliness is all they have, all they know. Boozer, perhaps you'll find peace when you too go the way of this father and son. Buck up son. At least that's something to look forward to.

From San Luis Obispo north. The Coast line is rocky and if you are not careful the tide wil sneak up on you. Next thing you know your in the surf being pounded on the rocks. Very dangerous unless you are aware of the situation.

I'm so happy Grief Counselors are available for the 1st responders!!!!!!! I remember not too long ago, 1st responders never needed that. They understood their job. They saw all sorts of 'bad deaths.' A drowning isn't a 'bad' death for a 1st responder. A mangled car wreck can be a little disturbing - but even then, you accept that by heeding the call.

I saw a cat get hit by a truck the other day. Poor thing!! Where's MY GRIEF COUNSELOR? OMG. The liberal media is really going overboard anymore adding their spin on EVERY STORY...

The cat is being hit by something un-natural and very fast.

The Californians got killed by something natural/slow moving body of water that is regular as clockwork.

Tide goes in. Tide goes out. Repeat.

It's my opinion that cats are smarter than Californians.

I wondered how long it would take for someone to turn a discussion about the tragic holiday week drowning of a father and son into a rant about gun control. Try to clear your mind and stay on subject. Or, do you think that if they had been armed with assault weapons they would not have drowned?

It is very irritating to me the way police refer to people as "subjects", or "white males" or "black females", like we are all some kind of lower order of life. Are they some higher species that they can refer to other people as animals with no minds or personalities? Their behavior is not indicative of any superior status.
