Former President George H.W. Bush remains in a Houston, Texas, hospital due to nagging health issues. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.
Former President George H.W. Bush's condition has improved enough for him to be moved out of the intensive care unit and into a regular patient room at the Houston hospital where he has been receiving treatment, a spokesman said on Saturday.
Bush, 88, entered Methodist Hospital on Nov. 23 with bronchitis. He was sent to intensive care last Sunday after setbacks including a persistent fever.
"The Bushes thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes," said a statement from the former president's spokesman.
Bush was the 41st U.S. president and is the father of former President George W. Bush. In a political career spanning four decades, Bush, a Republican, also served as a congressman, ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, CIA director, and vice president for two terms under Ronald Reagan.
Bush has lower-body parkinsonism, which causes a loss of balance, and has used a wheelchair for more than a year.

Amazing what can happen when a person can afford adequate health care.
Under the Former Presidents Act of 1958, GHW Bush has the same health-care as ALL former presidents. As of now it is Carter, Clinton, GHW Bush, and GW Bush. Any other completely misleading innuendos or implications?
This is just GREAT news for the extended Bush family. This is not the place for vitriolic partisan comment, I for one hope that he has many years of service left as a former US President in whatever capacity he deems appropriate. I'll also bet that he didn't eat any hospital broccoli.
Spike, Steve R wasnt misleading anyone about anything. He was just pointing out that Bush has alot of money and can afford better care than most average people. Stop being an ass and shooting your mouth off.
My inlaws and parents always had excellent healthcare. Never paid a dime. They were not rich.
"Spike, Steve R wasnt misleading anyone about anything. He was just pointing out that Bush has alot of money and can afford better care than most average people. Stop being an ass and shooting your mouth off."
Bush's care had nothing to do with his personal wealth, it is covered by the FPA of 1958. Of course, your blind hatred makes you willfully ignorant of the implication contained in post #1.
You are just mad because you were not aware of the FPA, and wanted to get on the "bash Bush bandwagon".
This is great news! I hope he'll be home soon with his family.
Bush the Elder is a Saudi pawn....always has been. He is beneath contempt.
Spike, you are an idiot. Bill nailed it on the head. Go back to your dish.
Sing, sing a song, sing it loud.
Is that because he's feeling better or because George D. A. Bush didn't allocate any money for that bill too.
This is nice news. I wish we had more like him in this world. The best to you George.
Mass murderers as Bush- 1991 Iraq invasion; 1989 Panama invasion- and Adam Lanza get no sympathy from me. Crazy that anyone sheds a tear for a presidential sociopathic killer of children.
DOU. Suppose you have no problem with Obama's continuing the war.
It is also amazing, as echoing from SteveR-2067355, that President Obama has taken an initial step to make the health care as affordable as it can be, but the next step is the Congress has to take the control of the cost of health care; otherwise, no one can have adequate health care, like former President H.W. Bush.
Pray that the God-speed recovery continues to be with him and the wisdom through the Lord Christ continues to be with the medical team and his family.
It is also amazing that you apparently don't realize that neither the cost nor the quality of health care has changed. What has changed is that people who don't want health insurance are now forced to buy it.
There are some changes with Obamacare, and many of them are VERY positive. We're also fortunate that electronic records requirements are being rolled out. Medicare is able to track routine tests and send reminders. New subscribers (Medicare) are eligible for a full PROBING of every possible orifice, with no co-pay (that means no excuses!).
United... A wellness visit is not the same as a physical. We have learned this recently. And we paid 900 plus for my husband's colonoscopy. If they had found nothing, it would have been covered but he had a couple of benign polyps clipped so it turned into a paying event. The rules are really screwy.
Good for him! He's a REAL Republican....not like the current generation of panty wastes
Really??? Really??? This is what we need to get news about!! It's a good thing that H.W. has amazing health care thanks to the hard work and sweat of the middle class that funds his care. Both Bush's (H.W.) and (W.) have sucked the life-blood out of the United States during their respective terms in office. Both are complete morons! You do not see W. being summoned by the White House, or any other governmental agency to share his ideas or to travel to hot spots in order to quell U.S. hatred. The reason??? He is a complete and certifiable MORON of the highest degree. 'Nuff said.
Nope don't see them summoned to the White House or any other govermental agency to share ideas! Being Republican could have something to do with that!
Does your concern for the hard work and sweat of the middle class extend to their funding of Obamacare for the indigent and illegal?
Full recovery ahead! Mr. President!
I have no ill feeling towards Bush. However, every day in Iraq and Afghanistan our soldiers are killed or seriously wounded and it's not even news. Have the news organizations lost so much heart, have they got their priorities so screwed-up, that a former president singing is considered top news? Maybe they should go to the VA hospitals daily and put that on the news so that Americans will finally understand that wars are not video games. Real people get real messed up and no one seems to care. Remember the graffiti found at a compound in Iraq; it tells the truth. "America is not at war; America is at the mall. The U.S. Army is at war."
Mr. Bush, if you have that AFLAC intensive care coverage, you'll come out a millionair!
Father Time is knocking on his door,,
Father time knocks on all doors sooner or later.
May not be long now before the tax payers no longer have waste money on all his perks
Hopefully, the same will be true for you and your use of Medicare and SS.
Why shouldnt Harleyguyvet get his SS and he doesnt really need Medicare as he is a vet. He has payed in to both and he should get what he has payed for. And harley said PERKS lulu99, not Medicare and SS.
Bill, wishing someone dead is sick and disgusting. If I said the same about say Clinton, you would jump down my throat.
Him, Clinton and the Carters. How many years will Obama be carried by the taxpayers?
That is right ,Jeff. Perhaps the bennies need to be reviewed going forward after Obama. What is offensive to me is the posters who think those from the other party should die off.
While I commend the man on his service to this country, I certainly didn't agree with much he did. Especially his drive to push NAFTA on the US citizens. I gotta wonder if he would have liked his healthcare taken care of by Mexico or even China later for that matter.
Great News!!! I like this man, as he is one of the Great Generation. He served our country in WWII, and as President. My liking him has nothing to do with politics...he is just a great guy!
All politics aside sir, you are a true warrior Mr. President. I wish you well.
quit moving "Happy Jack" it costs tax payers. He don't pay no insurance premiums
Do you speak English as a first language?
Thanks to those of you who have a heart. Hope your New Year is a wonderful one. To those who do not have a heart, think about bringing civility to your world in the New Year. We need to change for the positive.
Keep fighting the good fight GHW!!
5 kids, 1 adult die when SUV goes off road into creek
George H.W. Bush moved out of intensive care
You decide ...
Both are sad and we pray for those who are dead and for those who survive. Your point?
why do you pray for dead people .. are you some kind of nut?
You are very sad
He was starting to cost more than he was worth! Chenney was needing the bed and I guess the better 'Spook' won-out!!
I was hoping for a different outcome
Same to you and yours.
Medicare told George Bush to clear out - GOP slashed "entitlement" funding!
Why would Medicare say anything? H.W. Bush would go through the Department of Veterans Affairs!
Perhaps it is time to reconsider lifetime support for ex-Presidents.With the possible exception of Jimmy Carter, all current living ex-Presidents are millionaires or multi-millionaires. Do we really need to provide the with $186,000 a year pensions, plus heir congressional pension if they served in Congress. Then there is the annual office maintenance and travel. The big item is secret service protection which runs into the tens of millions of dollars a year.
Jimmy Carter was actually a millionaire when he was elected President, then was a million in debt by the time he left office, but has bounced back to be worth ~7 million today. (My guess is that Billy wasn't running the family peanut farm very well with all the beer he drank!)
Every President since Calvin Coolidge has been a millionaire except for Harry Truman... and all were millionaires before being elected with the exception of President Clinton. So that's 1 (or 2 depending on how you count) out of 14 for the last 84 years.
That said, I still believe that every ex-President deserves SS protection and the stipend. It's not an easy job, and it's not a lot of money compared to what Senators get.
Glad to hear hes feeling better. He probably just had a chest cold. But at his age, that can be lethal. So its a good idea to be in hospital, if you can afford it. The poor buggers who cant, usually die. Hopefully things like Obamacare, fix that. For atleast some anyway.
Glad he's feeling better. A couple of days ago, the media reported that Mr. Bush (in intensive care) was feeling so much better that he was singing. When it was reported that he was moved out of intensive care, my nephew, chiming in as the news anchor finished, added, "Because he wouldn't stop singing."
They should put all of Congress in the ICU.
Wonder if he has the same health plan coverage the rest of us do.
Hey, my cat had a headache today. No, at these prices and no pet insurance he ain't going to the vet.
