A New Year's Day walk along a beach north of San Francisco ended tragically on Tuesday when a man died after he and his wife were swept out to sea.
Three hours into the search, the Coast Guard located the man. The Marin County sheriff's office said while "life saving measures" were attempted, they were unable to revive him and he died.
The man's wife and their dog were able to make it back to shore in Point Reyes, Calif., after also getting swept out into the cold water.

The incident was reported at 1 p.m. local time (4 p.m. ET) on New Year's Day. Witnesses said the three were walking along the rocks when they were hit by a rogue wave.
The Coast Guard sent a helicopter and a boat to aid in the search for the man, who is reportedly 59 years old. They located him around 4 p.m. (7 p.m. ET)
The National Park Service and Marin County Fire also helped in the search.
The victim's identity was not immediately released.

Wow, unlike most of these stories, that looked like a normal, relatively safe, beach. In other words, he was not the typical idiot walking along a bunch of rocks, which see high surf all the time. Very unlucky, and sad for his wife and family.
Witnesses said they were walking along the "rocks", so this doesn't look like it was just on a flat beach. Still tragic. Same story, different day. When are people going to learn?

This guy didn't die because of the "bad" wave. He died because his lighter weight dog, was washed out further then they were. He could have easily gotten out of the water, like his wife did, but instead decided to foolishly go after his dog, and died in the process. The dog got out on its own.

Yes, just like walking up hills with storm clouds overhead, who would expect to be hit by lightning? Crossing the street in the middle while traffic is passing, on the phone, not looking either way, being hit by a car. Sadly, more people have to drown before the "passive" Pacific Ocean is seen as the huge surging body of crashing, churning, cold, heavy liquid that is affected by tremors miles below it's depth or thousands of miles away, which can cause a rogue wave or tsunami. Everyone has been warned. Wear a life preserver!

I think Hater is about to lose it, I think it forgot that it was the one that was calling others homophobic in #2.2 and then turned around and used what I think was a misspelled attempt at a gay slur in @2.12. It also forgot how to spell.

This is not uncommon in CA. It happens all of the time with no warning. Signs are everywhere. I saw this occur to a dive instructor, whose back was to the ocean in Montery CA. The entire class ran to his aid as the second wave pushed him back onto the beach. That wave took some 15 student divers back out with instructor, then a thrid wave brought them all back in right into the sea wall. Once everyone abandoned their dive gear they were able to scramble for saftey.

That's gotta suck, bigtime. I'm not a beach person at all, but if given the opportunity, and there is a nice beach, I would walk along it just to admire the beauty of the sea. There is no safe haven from death, but we like to delude ourselves that there is. This case is not at all similar to the morons who go stand in the surf during a hurricane, and not give a thought to the danger. My condolences to his wife and family, not that it makes it any easier for them to bear.
Big, steep waves are far more common than people think. The sea is unforgiving and you always have to be alert. I do a lot of sea kayaking and have seen all sorts of crazy stuff out there.

Sorry Tracy, it doesn't work that way, "When your number is up." You make it sound like some higher intelligence is sitting at a throne, checking people off a huge list. This death was not planned. We don't hear about the millions of people whose daily decisions keep them alive. We only hear about freak, tragic deaths, or more common deaths (like auto accidents and heart attacks). Has nothing to do when "When it's your time, it's your time." It just so happens that a wave snuck up on him. Simple as that. No higher intelligence planned this. Just like no higher intelligence planned that you'd survive New Year's day.

I think that we need a little more backgrouynd on who this man was/worked for/ was affiliated with because there's something awful suspciious about a relatively-young and reportedly healthy man like this being unable to swim back ten feet to shore when his wife and even their eight year ol scottish terrier were pohysicaly-able to do so. I've heard that he may have been involved with covering-up a lot of the u.s. activity during the "past arab" spring and even though he stayed quiet about what we were doing there obviously there was still someone nervous enough to feel like this man needed to be eliminated before something got out that could potentially hurt the naton. My guess is that they had mapped the ocean-currents anbd waited until he was close enough to the water's edge and then shoooted hium with some sort of tranquilkity-darts so that he fell into the water whiole the wife and dog were a little bit aways and then a planned wave came in and dragged him out before he could even come close to regaining consciousness or anything like that. hopefully people stop just accepting what the "authorities" tell them and look into this story deeper aws more details slowly and quielty emerge/ coem out and i hope that it reveals some of wahte truely occurred in the middle east several months ago.

No such thing as a "rougue" wave (by the way...the spell checker here works). As far as rogue waves, after reading a few articles online it seems that they do not come to shore. However many articles will incorrectly use the term rogue wave to describe a wave like this. I think that the term to be used in this case is a sneaker wave.
Are you kidding me? Only occur out to sea? (by the way "rougue"?... really?) ROGUE waves can occur in protected harbors and even lakes (such as great lakes) by a shifting in the earth. You may want to do some research before trying tothrow something out there on a comment thread.

The ocean can be very unpredictable. My husband and I ocean fish, and we love, and I do mean that we LOVE the ocean. We also know to never turn our backs to the ocean whether we are walking on the beach or fishing out at sea. Even then, at our age, would we be able to outrun or outswim trouble coming? I don't know. I have told my kids that if anything ever happens to me while I'm out to sea, at least I died doing something I loved. "Everyone dies. Not everyone truly lives." Quote from Braveheart.
This is what happens when ordinary citizens are allowed access to dangerous bodies of water that are suitable only for the military and the police. If they had been confined to swimming in a pool or small pond this could never have happened. We need to ban the ocean.

I was out there yesterday, and what a beautiful day it was. Not the Marin side, but at land's end. No wind, blue clear skies, flat ocean, a tug boat pulling a barge. There was a lot of people enjoying the day and I'm sure they were as well until that tragic moment. That old saying "You never know when you'll see your last sunset" rings so true. Seize the day. I understand why they were there, my condolences...

I don't know about White Sharks, but I used to live out there and a friend was walking on the beach with his girlfriend and a half a seal washed up on shore by them. I liked the ocean, but from a safe distance.
