Recreational marijuana users could get pot from vending machines, company says

Now that Colorado and Washington have legalized marijuana, entrepreneurs are embarking on what is being called "the green rush." NBC's Pete Williams reports.

If a California company has its way, recreational marijuana users in Colorado and Washington state will one day be able to get their pot out of vending machines.

Such machines are already in use in some states where medical marijuana is legal, but now the maker’s founder says the company is working to adapt the machines to comply with new laws in Colorado and Washington, where adults can legally use marijuana for recreation.

The vending machines for medicine require a fingerprint scan to verify the identification of the patient, which is then linked to a prescription on file.

But as Washington and Colorado figure out how to create a legal pot market for the masses, Hollywood-based Medbox, a public company, is offering up its expertise in convenient delivery systems.

"One day we envision these machines to be accessed, when it's allowed, 24 hours a day," Vincent Mehdizadeh, the founder and chief consultant of a subsidiary of Medbox that produces, installs and consults on the vending business, told NBC News. "One day in the future that may happen, but for now these machines sit behind the counter as an inventory control and compliance tool."

He said the Medbox machines and consultancy are in high demand in states such as Arizona, Massachusetts and Connecticut that have published medical marijuana regulations. Dispensaries use them to keep marijuana from being pilfered and comply with laws.

So where will all that 'legal' pot come from? Sale of pot stymied

Medbox is now offering to work with Washington and Colorado officials who are mobilizing to create the framework for a legal marijuana industry - and to collect taxes on pot sales.

"These machines behind the counter act an inventory control and taxation tracking tool so that the states can effectively track the taxes and collect on them more efficiently with real-time reporting directly from the machine to the state database," Mehdizadeh said.

The company also helps operators get licensed in states that have licensing programs.

"We've probably been the most successful consulting firm in the marijuana business," he said.

Mikhail Carpenter, spokesman for Washington’s Liquor Control Board, said Medbox has been in contact with the state but at this point no outside vendors have been chosen to help with marijuana sales.

Under state law, marijuana and marijuana-infused products, Carpenter said, would have to be sold from inside the confines of a retail outlet.

“So I can’t imagine with the way the law is written that you would see vending machines on the street corner,” Carpenter told NBC News.

In November, Washington and Colorado voters passed initiatives to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. Those laws went into effect last month.

Buzzkill: Feds fire warning shot over pot legalization

In Washington state, voter-approved Initiative 502 made it legal for anyone 21 or over to possess up to an ounce of marijuana, 16 ounces of “solid marijuana-infused product” (pot brownies and such) or 72 ounces of “marijuana-infused liquid.

Washington’s Liquor Control Board has until Dec. 1 to develop rules for implementation of its new recreational marijuana law.

Colorado, under Amendment 64 to the state Constitution, legalized not only recreational use, but also home growing, which is still illegal in Washington.

Growing, selling and possessing marijuana remains illegal under federal law, and the federal government is reviewing options in both Washington and Colorado.

President Barack Obama last month weighed in on the issue, telling ABC’s Barbara Walters the federal government has more important things to do than go after recreational marijuana users.

“We have bigger fish to fry,” he told Walters.

Two Colorado University students are facing multiple felony charges after campus police say they fed marijuana-laced brownies to their unsuspecting classmates and professor. KUSA's Nick McGurk reports.

Ain't gonna happen in Colorado. Recreational pot is subject to the same rules and regulations as alcohol .... which isn't sold from vending machines.

Recoup it out of YOUR pocket, not MINE, already gave the gov'mint enough of my money to waste! Why do you people scream about everything being taxed and then in the same breath you beg for more? I'm sick of giving Washington my cash to either pizz away or pass onto the wealthy in some form of bail out/subsidy! Why cant it just be legal, its a friggin plant for Pete's sake, why does everything in life have to have a financial string attached just to extort in exchange for our "freedoms"? When will you people realize that we have no rights in this country, only a few things that we are "allowed" to do!

The pro-folks are getting a taste of what the future looks like for legalization. It won't be vending machines and pot parks, it will be registering as a user, giving up all your private info and having the local and fed gov in your biz. Should of just left it as it was and pushed medical for those that really need it.

For the love of G-d, just legalize it in all 50 states and tax the hell out of it. We gotta come up with every means possible to pay the deficit. Why not be realistic and creative. Those who want it will get it if it is legal or not. I'd much rather have to deal with a bunch of dope smoking burn outs than aggressive alcoholics in the streets. Take the profit out of it for the cartells and maybe we'll see a decreacse in violent crime. Just saying.

WCF, you don't "pay down" the deficit, you just stop spending as much. Debt is what we owe and the deficit is just how much money we spend compared to how much we actually bring in. For example, If I have a 20,000 dollar car and am making my payments that's not a deficit, that's just debt. Now if I made $40,000 a year but spend $100,000 a year, I have a $60,000 dollar deficit. Our problem is that our "leaders" in DC never actually cut things, they just cut future spending. If the federal government brings in (more like steals) 2 trillion dollars a year, but we spend 3 trillion we need to stop spending that extra trillion right away (ending the defecit and not "cutting" it.)

I don't really care if it's in a vending machine or not. One upside I can think of, is that a vending machine won't shoot the client and take his money. Althought snopes says vending machines kill 2 people a year....

Vending machines BEHIND the counter? Prevents pilfering? If an employee wants to steal, they will, or at least try. This is why we have packaging! This current sales of loose weed has to stop. I don't even trust the scales! If it is packaged, and inspector can come in, unannounced, and test for quantity and quality. As we do with everything else! - Denver

A lot of pro pot sites lie, there is plenty of documentation of marijuana usage tied to a lot of injuries and fatalities.

Yet you don't list a single bit of this alleged documentation. Why is that? Also, almost every single anti cannabis site lies.

For every incident where cannabis is in the system, so is alcohol or other illicit drugs.

All car and work accidents should require marijuana testing as well though, because I know a lot of them are caused by marijuana usage.

Flawed logic. If someone smokes on one day, it can be in their system for weeks after it's use. So, if someone in front of a person that smoked two weeks ago jams on their breaks and they hit them, they will be arrested even though they are in no way under the influence. Same goes for workplace accidents.

Pro pot people either refuse to believe it, or are in denial, because the evidence is out there.

Yet again, you listed none. Not one shred of evidence to support your anti stance. If you're right, then back it up, or just move along.

I think all sales should be banned, but allow people to grow no more than 4 plants in their home.

BTW, your very first sentence flies in the face of everything you types after that. You're all for people growing their own, but prattled on about how many people die from it's use. Yet not one medical study can tie one fatality to its use.

You would just insert your ID and it would scan your age make sure you're over 21 and purchase what you need but, not more then an once. I've seen these machines, some people are gonna get real rich. There will be no pot vending machines for public use just as there are no alcoholic drink vending machines. The medicinal pot vending machines in use today are a convenience to the vendor by providing a legal database without hiring additional employees.

There will be no fingerprinting or registration of recreational users. We have the delivery method of recreational marijuana already in place. It is the same delivery method used for alcoholic beverages for decades. There will be attractive packaging for superior blends at premium prices and generic packaging for inferior blends at discount prices.

The marijuana industry will flourish with handsome profits(and likely bought out by the liquor industry). " I'll have a dime bag of Seagram's Gold please". The government will tax the hell out of it. Home grown marijuana will eventually be an option to some as home brewing is an option today. The prohibitive cost and labor will send 99.9% of us to the pot/liquor store. The limits on legal possession will soon become a joke. Who gets arrested for hauling four cases of legal beer in his trunk?

Driving under the influence and working under the influence of pot will result in the same penalties of alcohol abuse today. It will not be tolerated. Fine tuning the law and legal testing will be a minor issue. All of the "Chicken Little" nonsense is merely so much B.S. The advantages of legalizing recreational pot use are astronomical compared to the disadvantages of today on all fronts. I am proud to have a 21st century President that puts this issue in it's proper prospective.

Having said all of this, I will continue to enjoy my occasional cold bottle of beer or Rum and Coke on ice. My few experiences with pot left a lot to be desired. The wine drinkers, brandy snifters, martini lovers, scotch loyalists and pot smokers all have preferences of their own. God bless them all.

What a "common sense comment". ;) I'm fifty seven and I really see this happening in the near future. I smoke and drink beer, can't do liquor but don't have a problem with those that do. Yes, I'd love to see it legalized but that issue has never stopped or slowed me down. Ha ha! Anyway, great post and seems you have an open, honest mind that doesn't do knee jerk reactions or the "Sky is falling", thing! :)

Stupid idea. There is a reason why you don't see cigarette vending machines anymore. It was too easy for people under age to get cigarettes from them.

Which gives me an idea, cigarette vending machines that read the age from a persons drivers license. Since all of them have the magnetic strips on them now with the information.

To have these vending machines, is ridiculous, if pot is legal for recreational use. I can see the practicality of it, if it is for medical marijuana use only, in states that have legalized medical marijuana. Pot should be taxed and regulated, just like tobacco products are. It could be the source of revenues we need for the federal gov't. to help pay down our debt. Most likely won't happen, because it would make too much sense.

What a country California is! They are so far left they are falling into the ocean -- at least that's the prophesy. I actually got a Christmas letter from an ex-in-law last year bragging that she had a prescription for medical marijuana. If you are a veteran, you give veterans a bad name. If you are a veteran, you deserve thanks for your service, but that does not mean you deserve respect for your moronic opinions. If you are a verteran you should never tell anybody, because you seem to imply that all veterans share your political/social views. You say "most users are worthless people that don't contribute anything to anyone", but I say the worthless one is you.

Oh and I'm a veteran also...not that it matters unless you can jump through my screen and kick my ass.

As a 23 year veteran myself, I find you an embarrassment to the uniform you once wore.

You served to protect the rights of everyone. Not just those you align with.

And your all caps chest thumping is suppose to do what? Scare others?

People that wear the uniforms of the Armed Forces do so out of respect and not to intimidate. Seems you need to be reminded of that.

If you are a veteran, you deserve thanks for your service

No he doesn't. Not everyone that has served did so with respect and dignity. If he is willing to lord his timed served as some sort of tool of intimidation over others, he does not deserve any kind of thanks from anyone.

it's just that good old-fashioned faux news hatred they teach and viewers eat. i mean, how many 'alerts' can you have in a single news day? never before has there been so many citizens divided by political hate, at least not in this country.

sure, i watch faux too, but only for the hot, empty-headed women (except greta), like the sane viewers do.

now, if you forgive me, i've got to get back to this real medical journal...fascinating stuff!

Robert D Clarkson, The veterans I know are the most anti-war people on earth. They rarely speak of their wartime experiences. My youthful interest in the Pacific theater of WW2 prompted me to slowly and casually bring up the subject to my favorite uncle who served in that place and time.

The spontaneous empty haunted look in his eyes and firm set of his jaw made me so ashamed of bringing back such horrible memories to a man I was so very lucky to have in my young life. Uncle Junior recovered very quickly. He proceeded to tell me humorous stories of a group of young farm boys sworn to defend one another in American uniforms.

They traveled by bus and train from the mid-west to San Diego. They were rushed through boot camp and hurried to the Pacific front in times of perilous need. Most of them between 17 and 19 years old. They were led into battle by junior officers pulled prematurely out of college who were barely above their own age. These officers were the butt of many of his jokes as well as self-deprecating humorous actions of his green buddies and himself.

I was so happy to be laughing heartily at his side that day instead of shedding tears later that night for my youthful indiscretion in forcing him to relive such horrendous pain. I found out from my Dad and Grandparents that I was the first to hear these stories. He later regaled in repeating his humorous tales to all of his loved ones as I noticed he often left the room with a wistful look in his eyes.

This man was a true American patriot. This man was a veteran that walked away without expecting parades and accolades. This man gave his all and was happy to walk away alive. This man considered all of the pomp and glory belonged to the many young friends he left behind.

I'm a veteran too. :) I smoked my first joint on the parade ground at Ft. Lewis, during Basic, and continued till now. That's probably why I never do insane things, like threaten people over the internet.

On a happier note, I just minutes ago, used the parts scrounging skills I developed while doing field repairs in the Army, to put together a pretty nice water pipe. Proving once again, that what you learn in the service can help you in civilian life. Well, what I learned anyway, maybe not what you learned.

What studies have been made on the safety of ingesting burning leaf smoke into the body? Will the lawmakers demand warnings be posted on the marijuana. Will there be a certain level of TCP demanded for sale? Will cocaine of opium be allowed in the mix? Will the machines be allowed in school?

It's going to take far more than cannabis to get us out of debt in NY.

I have a former employee that has been unemployed for going on four years and his wife who works, pays no taxes due to deductions and they get $15,000.00 in credits every year.

Their three children, or tax credits as I have started calling them, are just one of thousands of families mooching off the system. It would be one thing if he was injured, but he isn't. Just lazy with his hand out.

Next to CA, NY is the biggest welfare state and it's going to take a lot of cannabis to bail us out.

Ya, that's why all those new ATMs that hold 20k or more are being stolen in record numbers. It's a moot issue. Vending machines are illegal in the USA except in establishments where people under 18 can never enter under any circumstance. Even bars are banned from having vending machines. THIS ISN'T EVEN A VALID ISSUE!

I still (very rarely) see cigarette machines in bars in some places - that would be a simple way to keep them secure (or at least limit access from minors).

Not sure why they NEED vending machines, though. My understanding is that you'll be able to walk into a gas station or 7-11 and just grab a pack over the counter (like smokes).

Since 2010 it has been illegal for almost every single establishment, including all bars and restaurants, to have cigarette vending machines. If you actually see one in a bar they are breaking a law that could close it down for good. Maybe you are thinking of some time in the 90s.

You are dumb. No, dispensaries(marijuana stores) will be the only place where sales of marijuana would occur legally in a legal state. That store cannot sell any other items, including many types of paraphernalia.

I travel a lot in different states. I can guarantee you that I saw a cigarette vending machine in a lounge in Oregon within the last couple of months. Don't know how legal it is, but it was right there when I walked in. And it was stocked.

LOL. Well, I don't think I'm "dumb" - but I could very well be wrong about where it will be sold. I don't smoke it, legally or not, so I'm not really "up" on the ins and outs of how it will be implemented in WA. My understanding is that it will require a license similar to what's currently required to sell alcohol (which you can buy at almost any gas station).

Alright - I looked it up on the govt website, and I was wrong (so dumb). I knew about restrictions about schools, etc - but didn't realize it had to be a dedicated store (which seems silly to me):

Q: Are there restrictions on where I can set up a store?

A: You cannot set up a store within 1000 feet of any elementary or secondary school, playground, recreation center or facility, child care center, public park, public transit center, library, or game arcade that allows minors to enter. Local authorities will also be notified and have an opportunity to object.

Q: Will the retail outlets be run by the state?

A: Stores will be licensed and regulated by the WSLCB but will be private-sector businesses.

Q: Can I incorporate marijuana sales into my existing business?

A: No. The initiative is clear that retail outlets may only sell marijuana, marijuana infused products and marijuana paraphernalia.

                        Cin,

You don't really have a right to call anyone dumb. You have no idea how it would work out. They are still working on legislation and figuring things out. Nothing is set in stone. Also: A) I used to work in a bar (that was 2009) that had a stocked cigarette vending machine. It may be illegal, but as we've learned from the world around us, laws don't always make a difference. B)There's no real basis to believe that marijuana would only be sold in dispenseries. In some states (Ohio for example) you can buy liquor in grocery stores and gas stations. So, what makes you believe that cigarette companies aren't going to jump all over this and start selling marijuana cigarettes in packs at gas stations? Parapheralia, also, is not only sold in one place. You can buy "paraphernalia" at gas stations, smoke shops, cigarette outlets, boardwalk shops, flea markets, etc.,

You can get paraphernalia anywhere. I just bought a part I needed to finish making a waterpipe, at Home Depot.

When I was a kid that's where we would get our cigarettes from. Raunchy stale ass dried out but we got them!

Next to this machine, add a beer machine and another that dispenses assault rifles!

Always violence!! If more people smoked, maybe there wouldn't be as much violence...And why on earth do people associate weed and guns...They are so totally opposite...

I shoot really well when I"m stoned. I just don't shoot at people.

DEN: I also know a thousand people who say they drive better after smoking pot. Perception is altered. The fact is that undisputed scientific testing proves that reflexes and coordination are also affected.

I support legalization of recreational use. I also support responsible use of both marijuana and firearms. I don't care what the mind altering substance...guns and things that affect you from the neck up do not mix.

Consider it somewhat similar to texting and driving....distraction of any sort is not acceptable.

I personally do not want to be around anyone who is not functioning 100% with a loaded gun. That includes people who show up for a hunt with a hangover.....and I hunt with people who have the same high safety standards.

With the two "test states"....I am hoping that people partake with common sense on the side of caution and safety. The legalization can be reversed if people do not respect caution, safety and common courtesy rights of others.
