In this photo provided by the Lakeside Fire District, two teenagers hang on to a dead tree after the ice on a lake started to crack in Show Low, Ariz., on Wednesday.
It was a daring mistake that two Arizona teens might never forget. On Wednesday, they ventured out onto a frozen lake in Show Low, Ariz. -- then the ice cracked beneath them.
"Luckily, they were right by a standing dead tree," Lakeside Fire District Capt. Dennis Stern told NBC News on Thursday.
For what officials believe was at least two hours, the teens clung onto the tree in the middle of the frozen lake.
Authorities say a third teen was on the bank of Fool Hollow Lake, The Associated Press reported. That individual called their parents, who in turn, contacted authorities, Stern said. After the call came in around 4:45 p.m. local time, the Show Low Fire Department worked with the Lakeside Fire District's ice rescue team to recover the stranded teens.

The temperature was 27 degrees when the call came in, according to Stern, and plummeted to 22 degrees by the time the rescue was completed. Show Low is in eastern Arizona at 6,400 feet elevation.
"It's still early in our winter season," Stern said, noting that the ice in the area is only an inch or two thick.
The teens were treated for mild hypothermia in the hospital, Show Low Fire District Capt. Brent Mix told the AP.
"Their hands and feet got pretty cold," Mix told the AP. "It was dark by the time we got them to shore."
The ages or identities of the teens have not been released.

"There is no such thing as 100 percent safe ice!" the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office in Wisconsin states in ice safety guidelines on its website.
"Even if ice is a foot thick in one area on a lake, it can be one inch thick just a few yards away," the guidelines warn. "It's impossible to judge the strength of ice by its appearance, thickness, daily temperature, or snow cover alone."

I'm waiting for the alarmists to say that the lake freezing in Arizona is not only proof that global warming is making the weather colder in some places but that global warming also kept the lake from freezing more solid too.
I wish global warming would keep the frost off of my windshield every single morning. It's cold out there scraping ice.
stfu
It's so nice to see such thoughtful, well-reasoned and persuasive arguments.
I think it's more about foolish teenagers walking on one or two inches of ice more than your foolish theory economy killer. But then again it's Arizona. Great Ice Fishing There ?
What say for once we can the climate change debate, and just remark on the inherent stupidity of almost all children and teenagers?
I'm glad they are all right.
But boy, stepping out in the midst of a frozen lake without knowing anything about the thickness of the ice is big-time stupid.
Hope their brains develop.
It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with global warming. Arizona has numerous mountains in excess of 10,000 feet. If I remember correctly, Show Low is in the White Mountains, near the Apache reservation. It snows a lot in the mountains in the winter time. The mountains in Arizona are part of the Rocky Mountain range. That's why the state is in the Mountain Time Zone.
Interesting economykiller... I'm waiting for the moron denialists to decrapify their brains and learn a bit of science.
@dmann This happens alot. But most of the time it doesn't turn out this way. And my daughter isn't stupid. They are just kids trying to have good clean fun.
@Neville You have no brains. In freezing water they wouldn't have made. Come on out and jump in my pond. It's cold enough. Lets see if you can do it.
It's all about natural selection. Let the idiots go walk on the ice and fall through. It's nature's way of thinning out the gene pool!
Looks like it's you, economy killer, that's bringing up the climate change debate and nobody else. BTW, there's lots of mountainous country in AZ that regularly freezes over in the winter.
AH, To be young and dumb again. What memories. Thanks boys.
Jerks!
yowza,
"BTW, there's lots of mountainous country in AZ that regularly freezes over in the winter."
That's right, yowza. That's what I said in my post #1.6, but nobody read it. It was 5 degrees in Show Low this morning. Many people who don't live in Arizona are under the mistaken impression that Arizona is flat and very hot all over. It is actually one of the Rocky Mountain states and it gets damn cold in the winter in the mountains; even as late as June.
@John H in CT - Yes, there is ice fishing here. We're not unfamiliar with snow or freezing temperatures. One can drive an hour north of Phoenix and find themselves in colder mountain climate. Would it surprize you to learn that skiing and snowmobiling are popular within the state (translation - plenty of snow and ice)? Ever see the Grand Canyon in winter? The area the teens were in is mountainous and known for winter freezing and spring forest fires. That doesn't excuse these kids. Their parents really needed to have a little heart to heart about when it's safe to go on the ice.
Mickey, you're looking for informed comments in the wrong place. And you are correct, Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside are in the White Mountains. I was up there camping a few years ago in mid-July and evening temps got just below 40. It was a tad brisk.
What a perfect name for the lake and the kids. Fool Hollow Lake is so appropriate. I'll bet they never venture out on a frozen lake again. Lesson well learned, glad their OK.
Yeah, the picture made me laugh. I'm glad they are ok and able to learn from their stupidity.
It doesn't even get cold enough up here in the blistery north to make ice thick enough to walk on anymore. Why would anyone even attempt it in warmer Arizona? Contenders for the Darwin Award.
Show Low, which is a ski area is at the 6400 foot level in Arizona and gets very, very cold. Speaking of Darwin Award contenders...try getting a clue.
Fools Hollow Lake almost became Fool Swallow Lake.
make them pay for the rescue
Yes, let's have no compassion for anyone. How many teens do you know who always make great decisions? Try zero! Or, by your responses, perhaps you are also a kid.
They are kids. Luckily there was a tree to climb and hang onto. Thank goodness they are safe.
@allpeople. It's nice to see somepeople have brains. I'am glad they're safe. Kids don't think. It's not that they're stupid.
Hey Rick Why don't you eat shi! and die.
Mary Jones-1616541: Deep breath, Mary. Come on. Deep breath.
Monkey, I can't. These idiots touched on a raw nerve. I don't want to tell you the story. But I'am so glad they are safe. This happens alot with the worst ending. People think they can swim out of freezing water. Well then nobody would have died on the Titanic if you could. These people couldn't stand a cold shower. This is not one story to make jokes about. I'am gone. Have a good time.
Those were a couple of very lucky kids! Thank goodness that tree was there. Good job, rescuers!
Tree-hugging is a valuable skill - it could save your life.
Very lucky cold kids--glad it turned out ok--I bet those two hours felt like 200---
Idiots. Water doesn't stay frozen forever, or just for them. Put yourself in harm's way, pay the price. Obviously, no one taught them that.
Oh yea robert and you were so friggin smart when you were a kid. I can't imagine the brains you think you have. I'll bet you never even saw frozen water except in your drink.
Will: Thank you for your compassionate remark. I will cherish it forever.
Ban Ice !
I quit ice fishing its just to risky anymore with warm temps glad to see they were rescued.........
They could have been doing worse things...kids being kids. Glad they're ok and the lesson is hopefully learned. Not like adults don't make the same or worse type decisions.
For goodness sake, listen to some of us adults passing such self-righteous judgments upon these obviously young children. As if perfect at that age in life themselves. For those who think such things, nobody is according to the experts in science, medicine and psychologist in childhood development. Their brains, especially the part that can think ahead to discern consequences and impulse control, develops last and finishes at age 25.So a child aged 11-13 really doesn't grasp the full consequences of their actions nor see the dangers adults do though they know right from wrong.
Did these two children use poor judgment? Yes, but that is to be expected at that stage of life. How else are they going to learn their way through life but by trial and error? Poor choices lead to negative consequences and suffering, which lead to learning which lead to wisdom.Line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little, there a little.Positive choices by their good consequences, influence more such ways of thinking in making choices.
When I was eleven years old there was a narrow 12 foot deep ravine behind our family farm that often filled up with snow each winter. One day I saw a little stream of ice water flowing across a level field of snow beyond our fenced off property.Thinking how fun it would be to play using the water, I started to walk over. Suddenly I dropped through the snow obviously covering the ravine of ice water hidden below. The outside temperature was below freezing.Lucky my cries for help brought a brother who saved my life. With my clothing frozen solid onto me when we reached home finally.
Was I stupid, some might say yes. But isn't stupid doing something despite knowing the obvious negative consequences? Some people will say you can't fix stupidity. Ignorance on the other hand, is like these two young kids, and I who didn't understand the dangers of what could happen. So it can be fixed. Then again, anyone can be ignorant, regardless of age. As long as they are willing to learn, there is hope.
It is so easy for some who have learned personally long ago, from others who have survived, or died, to unfairly condemn those who haven't. Lacking any compassion because the pain from their own mistakes and lessons learned so long ago has been forgotten. To lift themselves up as experts in life's lessons and know it alls.
The impulsiveness of youth is to be expected, and cannot be avoided, no matter how much children may try to curb themselves. They need time, patience and most of all compassion from others. So they will be able to successfully navigate their way into adulthood.Life will already beat them up enough, without others condemning them for simply being human and making mistakes they may never forgive themselves for in the end. Let us all be more compassionate. Thank goodness these two young individuals will go on to have the opportunity to experience so much more of life's wonders
wow, what a bunch of complete and total idiots. Very typical for arizona people actually...i live here
I know what you mean and can confirm your observation .
When those Sand Storms\Haboobs' blow thru PHX 20 times a year
you can hear the wind whistle thru the empty heads who bought homes there...
until the sand fills their ears again .
How did the tree grow in the middle of the lake?
It's valley between mountains, it fills with snowmelt & rain & presently it isn't full
but it is DEEP .
The base tree they are on, while only a few yards from shore, is 20 ft. below the surface
on an incline you cannot walk up w/o ropes .
Thanks, nice info for those of us who are clueless as to this areas geography!
@al Are you from the city. There are trees in just about all lakes. They're in the Mississippi river.
Trees growing in lakes are certainly something new to me. I guess I must be from the city.
Fool Hollow Lake is an impoundment created by a dam on a river, it is not a natural lake. At some point, those old tree trunks were live trees growing on dry land, then the lake created by the dam flooded the land. There are probably a lot of old tree stumps in the impoundment--good cover for fish, not good for propellers.
Lucky kids. A guy in my own county wasn't so lucky this week, he had to be recovered from under the ice, not rescued. He had a PFD, too, but this one time he left it in his truck, it's a sad start to the season. Ice has to be four inches thick to support a person safely, kids here are taught that in middle school here as part of "teen health".
i originally grew up in wisconsin, and we NEVER saw trees growing up in the middle of lakes. (sorry).
bear in mind, according to the article (and picture), these are extremely old, dead tree trunks. Not actual trees.
suggesting the trees were there first....then died as flooding/swamping expanded the lake...but trunks are still there.
People. Can you not put together words in an article, pictures, and common sense, to form some intelligent conclusion?
Great they were able to survive, but 22 degrees isn't really all that cold. If it were -22 then you have something. I have gone through ice at temperatures below 22 degrees. It would be a true surprise if these kids would have died if they had gone through the ice.
Did the hospital where they were treated replace the teen's brains, which had been misteriously sucked out therefore forcing them onto the thin ice?
Doubt they would have frozen at 22 degrees but they certainly would have succumbed to their brain's being removed if left to hang on the tree.
@danielito You can come to my place where the temp is 27. I'll throw you out in the middle of the pond and lets see if you can make it back. Take me up on it or shut up. Just shut up you city dweller.
mary jones, you sound a strange note there. A true city dweller are these kids who are dumb enough to have done what they did.
a country born person wouldn't have attempted it. IDIOTS. they should've been left there for a while to think about their plight! and 27 is not that cold, for those of us that grew up in the true North of this great country, 27 is what we call spring. -10 plus wind chill is winter.
Fool Hollow Lake! Kinda ironic. However, I was at least as stupid if not more so during my youth around frozen lakes, ponds, canals etc. So I''m lucky to be alive today. Like they say, people with glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Glad it all turned out ok for all!
They should not have been there, simple.
The temperature did not "plummet" as reported. It simply dropped only five degrees. Also, they were not in the "middle of the lake" as reported. They were near the edge. There are too many exagerrated news reports out there!
These kids will be famous, they found the tree of life.
I'm glad they are okay--lucky for them that the 3rd guy was more cautious and was able to alert the families. It's easy to point fingers and cast blame--but oh man, we've all been young and seemingly invincible, and thinking back it's a miracle that I'm still alive.
Bet they don't do that again. Oh Yea,teenagers...
So they took the time to take a picture of them hanging on the tree rather than hurry up and rescue them.
