Cops 'suspicious' after body found in supermarket parking lot

Sheriff's deputies discovered a dead body inside a car in the parking lot of a grocery store in Fallbrook, San Diego County, on Thursday night.

SAN DIEGO -- A dead body was discovered zipped up in a sleeping bag in a car at a grocery store's parking lot on Thursday.

Deputies and fire officials were called to the Albertson's supermarket in Fallbrook, Calif., around 7:15 p.m. local time (10:15 p.m. ET). The body was found inside a 1997 Toyota Forerunner.

Homicide detectives later responded to the scene.

"At this point we don't know whose it is -- we don't even know if it is male or female -- just that it appears suspicious," San Diego Sheriff's Department Sgt. Patrick Yates said. "The body is dead [and] the circumstances are suspicious."

More stories from NBCSanDiego.com

A family member said that the Toyota Forerunner belongs to Alvin Bulaoro, 24. He's been missing since Dec. 21.

Bulaoro's family was at the scene on Thursday night.

Bulaoro's brother said the family had hired a private investigator to search for their missing relative. The private investigator told the family that Bulaoro's car had been spotted in the Albertson's parking lot.

Bulaoro's brother said he went to the lot, found the car and called authorities.

The lack of any visible signs of life suggests that the subject may be dead. When asked if he or she was male or female, the subject was unable to provide an answer, possibly due to his or her presumed deadness. If the subject begins talking to police in the future, we may have to reconsider whether or not he or she is actually dead.

I think suspicious means they don't appear to have died from natural causes. Suspicious is police language for this. It is related to their job . Suspicious or not suspicious will dictate how they proceed.

I think a body zipped up in a sleeping bag in a car in a parking lot would be suspicious even if it wasn't dead.

Homeless man that was living in his car in a parking lot was found dead.. This is someone trying to make a big story out of a common occurrence.. People are found dead like this all the time and during the winter months it peaks.. Cause of death will most likely be drugs or carbon monoxide with the small chance of natural causes.. 2 weeks dead in a confined space makes for a mess..

Bet the PI found the car by offering a reward to a network of people who will look for specific things on request.. Kind of like a scavenger hunt with several hundred people looking for a prize.. Common and effective thing that is used all the time, cops call them snitches..

They can't tell if the body is male or female? Do cops know basic human anatomy? Wouldn't the clothes give them a clue? Scary to think these are people armed with guns with the power to throw you in jail.

Roadrunner -- this was SAN DIEGO. Most people don't die under those circumstances in southern California. (BTW: The LOW temp last night was around 45 ... and the "body" was found around 7:15, well before the coldest point of the night.)

At the very least, someone MOVED the body there or it would have been found earlier.

I'm guessing that the cops are going to $h!t down both legs when some guy or girl comes back to claim their body.

The use of a possesive pronoun makes it appear that the owner of the body will be back to collect it like it was a lost piece of luggage. Typical "cop"ese (cop speak) - using words to make themselves sound smarter but show their real intellect.

Obviously you have never seen a body that has had a couple of weeks to decompose in warm temperature, let alone wrapped in a sleeping bag. I would bet that you would be pucking you guts out before you even got close enough to tell it was a body.

Agreed that this article was written very poorly, not what I call news.

Thinker, I didn't the cops wrote articles for the news.

Just look at the people all around you. The quality of education is down the tubes thanks to technology. Please, most people cannot function without some sort of technological device in their hands. Just this morning on the "Today Show", a group of young college roommates decided to "detox" from all technology-related devices (smartphones, computers & other devices). At first they were lost without the devices, then as the days progressed they realized how much more clearer they were able to think and comprehend simple things like conversations with people, more observant of their surroundings and more energy during the day.

Life is not what goes on in technology; life is what happens when you are not paying attention to what goes on around you!

I am a firm believer that computers and other devices do not belong in grammar school classrooms. Until children can master the basics of math, reading & writing on their own they will never know their true capabilities. It is as simple as doing basic math in your head or on paper; reading a book and comprehending what you read; and being able to write a thesis on paper with one's own ideas, thoughts and creativity. Technology cannot do that for the human brain. Remember, computers are only as good as the human operating them. Even the "spell check" feature in MS Word, Outlook or smartphone cannot think like the human brain hence the reason it offers various spellings because it does not know what is being conveyed.

In this case do not blame the media, this is exactly how the news was issued last night when the body was first found, they are only conveying what was said at the crime scene. If you want to blame anyone blame the San Diego Sheriff Deputy that spoke stupidly, might as well he hadn't made any comments.

This caliber of reporting is the result of the media going to third world countries and having them write the news articles and then send them to the news organizations. And you thought your medical records, IT help and credit card clearing houses were the only services being provided by off-shore sweat shops.

I'd rather read several sources (from both spectrum of news media) and foreign (often more accurate) news sources, as well.

besides this poorly written article being an indication of the poor standards that seem to be accepted in most reporting done today it also occurs to me the idea of being 'first', regardless if you have any salient facts to report, is much more important than giving a comprehensive accounting of the related facts.

why not just wait until you can write most of the basic facts of this case---who, why, when, where and how! to answer only one of these---the where (and even this is in doubt as the person could have died elsewhere and then left at the parking lot location) is not really of much use to anyone, except for the reporter who wrote the story. the writer provides no real information except to be able to say ''i was first'' is another indication of the lowering of our standards that passes for 'acceptable' today.

i wonder when we will reach the bottom and can't go any lower!

Police departments do little to locate missing persons who are over the age of 18. If they're sane, not chronically ill or in need of medication, they take the report and file it. They'll interview you but adults are autonomous; unless an individual was known to be stalked by someone or there is evidence of foul play there is little or nothing a PD will do when your family member goes missing.

If you have money to hire a private detective to look for him or her, they may be located or not. This was evidently a case where the vehicle was located. The body inside may or may not be the individual.

The story was put out too soon and without enough information. Why do they do that?? They should be able to tell with one look if it's a male or a female body! Suspicious? Ya think? Sounds like it is the brother (male) that was missing.

When decomp occurs to the point the remains are liquified, no one can tell if it's male or female until the coroner looks at them. You're inexperienced with these matters like the rest of the folks shooting off their keyboards on this thread. It's warm during the day in CA. Heat builds up in a vehicle due to the greenhouse effect and inside the sleeping bag the corpse would have cooked more.

Read between the lines: it's a rotted corpse that's been there for days. Identification will be made via dental records.

If it was a suicide gone bad, then wouldn't that person still be alive?

"The body is dead {and} the circumstances are suspicious" Thank you, Sgt. Yates, for your stellar police work. I feel safer already. Better alert Homeland See-curity in case there is a terrorist plot involving sleeping bags and Toyota SUV's...

One thing is certain: this event will most certainly lower the vehicle's resale value...

I have no doubt that Mad Max of the John Boy and Billy show would have comments about the title of this article!

And when would finding a body, in a bag, not be suspicious?????

"At this point we don't know whose it is -- we don't even know if it is male or female -- just that it appears suspicious," San Diego Sheriff's Department Sgt. Patrick Yates said. "The body is dead [and] the circumstances are suspicious."

                    No $hit...thank you captain obvious.

I read the title and the first thing I thought was: "As opposed to an 'unsuspicious' body found in a parking lot"

Really article writer? When is a body that is found in a parking lot NOT suspicious?

                    gottta love the edumacation system.

You'd think they could at least get the name of the vehicle right. It's a Toyota 4Runner; not Forerunner.

That's what I noticed too. Maybe we Texans are simply more aware of SUV models?
