Two New York police officers were shot by an armed subway rider in Brooklyn and an off-duty officer was shot during an attempted robbery at a Bronx auto shop in the span of an hour Thursday, bringing the number of NYPD cops wounded by gunfire in the first three days of 2013 to a quarter of the total shot all of last year, authorities said.
In Brooklyn, a lieutenant and three officers assigned to the transit division were in plainclothes on patrol in two subway cars of a Manhattan-bound N train shortly after 7:30 p.m. when they noticed a man moving illegally between the cars. Officers Lukasz Kozicki and Michael Levay stopped the man as the train pulled up to the Fort Hamilton Parkway stop in Dyker Heights, intending to question him and pull him off the subway, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Thursday evening.
When asked for identification, the suspect appeared to reach for a wallet, but pulled out a 9-millimeter Taurus and opened fire on the officers, Kelly said. Kozicki, 32, was hit three times -- once in each thigh and once in the groin. Levay, 27, was hit once in the lower back but was able to return fire, fatally shooting the suspect.
One passenger was grazed in the gunfire exchange and wasn't seriously hurt, Kelly said. Other passengers on the train were able to flee onto the platform when the gunfire erupted. The station was not crowded at the time of the incident, Kelly said.
Kozicki and Levay were taken to Lutheran Medical Center, where they were listed in stable condition and are expected to make full recoveries. A witness told police the gunman appeared to notice the officers' bullet-resistant vests and aimed low before he fired.
The unidentified suspect had a past criminal record of five assaults, including one with a knife, officials said.

Earlier Thursday, an off-duty officer was shot in the Bronx during an apparent robbery attempt. Officer Juan Pichardo was working at his family's dealership when two men, one of them armed with a handgun, walked into the store and, after pretending to be interested in a vehicle, brandished the weapon.
Pichardo was shot in the leg during the fracas that ensued; he was not armed. He and another employee managed to wrestle one of the suspects to the ground and disarm him. The second suspect who had entered the store fled to a getaway vehicle outside the building, while Pichardo held the other suspect until police arrived. Police caught up with the getaway car a short time later and arrested three occupants inside. Their identities are unknown.
Pichardo was taken to the hospital with a bullet wound to the leg, but is expected to be OK. He was the third NYPD officer to be shot on Thursday, the third day of the year. Only 12 police officers were shot in all of 2012, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Thursday.
“In recent weeks, we've heard some people say that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. But sometimes the good guys get shot – and sometimes, they are killed," the mayor said Thursday night from the hospital where the two officers wounded in the Brooklyn incident were recovering. "Tonight, thank God, three good guys – three New York City police officers, who acted heroically – are going to make it. But we owe it to the good guys to do whatever we can to protect them – just as they do whatever they can to protect us. Instead, Washington is letting the bad guys shoot our police officers, our children, our neighbors – and it just has to stop."
Bloomberg's "good guys with guns" remark was an apparent retort to the National Rifle Association'srecent statement that "the only thing that stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." The mayor has been a vocal advocate for tighter gun control.

So far there are four states that have amended their laws to allow people to carry, WITHOUT PERMITS. Even concealed. Eleven more are working on similar laws.

How about you do some research on AR15 (they are not assault rifles) and mass shootings.
The only ones to really use them were Arizona (giffords) and Newtown.
Most of the victims in Aurora were killed by the shotgun and handgun, Columbine was handguns and machine pistols, Virginia Tech was handguns, UT-Austin (in the 60s, look it up) was with a bolt action rifle
For all of those of you who don't want to carry just hang a sign around your neck. It can say, I am a friendly person who will not resist your assault. Take everything I have because you must need it.

According to the CDC 11,493 homicides are commited in the US with a firearm. Tobacco kills 440,000 a year. Alcohol kills 110,000 a year. Adverse reaction to prescription drugs kills 32,000 a year. If they make tobacco illegal we can save 40 times more peopl than are killed by firearms. If they make tobacco and alcohol illgegal we could save 50 times more people!
May I suggest that putting a cigarette or a beer bottle in your mouth is somewhat different circumstances than someone else putting a bullet in the back of your head? One is voluntary, one is not. To some, a discernible difference.

First order of business. This case is a rarity in that the officers involved did not pepper the subway station with seventy rounds of ammunition or hit bystanders. I will make the assumption that this means these officers PRACTICE with their sidearms, and for that I COMMEND THEM! Well done.
Second, I would like to know where this low life obtained this gun in a city with VERY strict gun control ALREADY in place. Straw purchase? Stolen? Brought in from another state? Found in a Christmas wrapped teddy bear (still having a hard time finding THAT MSN story credible)? I'll lay money on it NOT being legally purchased by the shooter.

EVERY DAY in his great nation private citizens utilize firearms of ALL types to DETER and STOP criminals. How many times have any of you seen MSN publish THOSE stories? I think the last one was somewhere around the 21st of Nevervember. I have owned guns since I was 14 years old. I have never once even had a fleeting thought about using my weapons to commit an offensive (as opposed to defensive) act of violence. I HAVE, however, in the course of my adult life employed a gun and successfully stopped violent acts that would have wound up in serious injury or death of myself, my wife, and in two cases complete strangers. Think as you will but these are no exaggerations.
I am a gun enthusiast, not to be confused with a gun nut. We are two very different species. I was a licensed gunsmith, a former FFL holder (the license required to sell guns and ammunition and no, it was not revoked, I gave it up when the price to keep that license more than tripled), an avid gun collector, shooter, and hunter. I own shotguns, hunting rifles, handguns, and even assault rifles. All my guns with the exception of the one I carry every day are secured better than any police station keeps their weapons locked up. Each day to work my wife carries a Glock Model 23 .40 caliber and I carry a Colt Commander Series IV .45 automatic. I own a Barret .50 caliber rifle. I own an DPMS A-4 assault rifle (carbine version of the venerable AR-15) and when we go deep mountain camping I carry the A-4 with seven, 30 round magazines. It is an excellent, very light weight, high capacity, dependable gun to guard against aggressive pack oriented animals such as wolves and coyotes.
Yes, I own all these and, yes, I preach the virtues of the Second Amendment and responsible gun ownership. Like all gun enthusiasts I am in 100% agreement that changes need to be made to govern the purchase and storage of firearms. I would gladly abide digging in to my mental health records if it meant someone else who should NOT have a gun would NOT get a gun.

An acqaintance of mine was victim of a home invasion and it took the police 25 minutes to respond. This was last year. She drove him off with her 9mm. This was in Wadsworth, IL - a very affluent area. So, if the millions of us gun owners want guns so we can kill people randomnly why aren't the random killings by guns just through the roof? BTW - The police are mandated with community security; not individual safety. That's an important difference.

That would mean that you are surrounded, but I bet you have quite a few good, law abiding neighbors. They may even be your friends. With the 2 million background checks that the FBI did last month, I'd say there are a lot of law abiding Americans in this country who would like to protect their 2nd ammendment rights!

I HAVE taken human life, men who would have killed me, you, or even your narrow minded mother. Even in a situation when you must kill to stay alive taking a human life is the most horrific feeling one could ever have. It is not one I would care to feel ever again. Last July my wife and I caught a young man and his friends cutting through the chain link fence at our apartments (we own them) to cut through our property to deal drugs. She stood on OUR property and began taking their pictures. One of them did not like her (legal) activity, picked up a twelve pound rock and charged her. Now, in your infinite wisdom, you tell me...do you think we could have called 911 and waited the ten minutes for the cruiser, and hope he was so out of shape he could not run the thirty FEET in that time? Well, perhaps you are a coward and would have stood idly by while YOUR wife had a rock slammed in to her head. I drew on the little bastard. He was so close and moving so fast hit hit the ground as if sliding in to third base and knocked her over. I held all four of the little pieces of sh*t until police arrived. Three were holding sale weight of crack cocaine and two had stolen small caliber handguns. I am also a retired firefigher/paramedic and worked closely with police, respect them, and know damn well, as even THEY will tell you, they can not be everywhere at once and that even THEY agree that at times a civilian MUST defend themselves. Now, let me break this down for you. I own twenty-eight long guns and three pistols as of right now. All but EIGHT are collectors items, are NEVER fired, and are stored with their firing pins removed. My wife and I both have our basic hunting rifles. We both carry sidearms every day as the incident above shows we work in an environment that can be dangerous. We both have hunting shotguns. I have a DPMS A-4 assault rifle because it is a reliable, lightweight, powerful gun that is much easier to carry and far more effective when camping fifty or sixty miles in to the mountains where we have to sometimes share our camp site with coyotes, wolves, and other dangerous animals. I own ONE GUN "just because I want to". My .50 caliber Barret. I used one in the Marines, and I am nostalgic. In a pinch it, too, is a legal hunting arm. Now, even YOUR tunnel vision should note that nowhere in there did I note that I had purchased a single ONE of these weapons to take human life.

We are a gun crazy nation. Our attraction to these weapons goes beyond hunting and self protection in many cases. Perhaps it gives us a sense of power, masculinity and control but also produces paranoia. Whatever it is it is not normal or healthy.

Statistically, if you carry a gun you are 4X more likely to die from gun violence. If you have a gun in your house the most likely person to die from it is you, a family member or a friend.
