FBI: Second suspect arrested in cannibal cop case

The FBI confirmed 23-year-old Michael Vanhise, of Trenton, was arrested early Friday in connection with the case of an NYPD officer who allegedly threatened to kidnap, cook and eat women.

A second man has been arrested in connection with the case of an NYPD officer who allegedly threatened to kidnap, cook and eat women in a bizarre plot where he fantasized about how "tasty" one victim looked and said it would be easy to roast a person in his oven, federal officials said.

The FBI confirmed 23-year-old Michael Vanhise, of Trenton, was arrested early Friday. The agency would not provide additional details on his alleged involvement in the case until after his Manhattan court appearance later Friday. No information on an attorney was available.

According to court papers, Vanhise and 28-year-old Gilberto Valle, who was arrested in October, may have plotted via e-mail to kidnap and eat women.

For more, visit NBCNewYork.com

Valle, of Queens, was previously charged with two counts of attempted kidnapping in the shocking case that includes online transcripts of his alleged plans, at one point telling a co-conspirator that his oven is "big enough to fit one of these girls if I folded their legs."

"I was thinking of tying her body onto some kind of apparatus ... cook her over a low heat, keep her alive as long as possible," he is accused of saying in the July conversation.

"She does look tasty, doesn't she," he added, according to the complaint.

According to the criminal complaint, Valle had files on his computer that referred to at least 100 women, including photographs, addresses and physical descriptions.

Ten of those women were interviewed by the FBI and confirmed that they know Valle, the complaint said.

Defense lawyer Julia Gato had said in court Valle's online chats were "just idle talk," pointing out no ropes, chemicals or other suspicious material were found in his home.

"We're talking about someone with a fantasy, in a deviant world where people talk about unreal things," said Gato. "At worst, he has sexual fantasies about people he knows."

Gato said Valle was a respected officer in the NYPD, with six and a half years on the force. He was suspended from the NYPD pending the outcome of the case.

GA Scooter

Seems this New York guy bought into the story of the CA "chef" that slow cooked his wife a few months ago at his restaurant up near Yosemite, Wonder what kind of herbs and seasoning he planned for?

telling a co-conspirator that his oven is "big enough to fit one of these girls if I folded their legs."

I guess he could truss her up like you bake a turkey ;>)

Is it just me, or do people who claim "this is all just fantasy stuff" not realize how foched up they are?

I have fantasized about winning the lottery, travelling the world, maybe even having hot crazy sex with famous people...

but ya know i've never fantasized about killing people, ever.

and i think if you do, you've crossed a line that suggests society is right to limit your freedoms.

it's merely a matter of time before a sick f'er like this guys goes from fantasizing to acting out on his desires.

you know, i play the lottery hoping my fantasies come true...what do you think this guy is doing to satisfy his current desires?

This make believe on-line BS chatter describing crazy fantacies only brings out the "real" mental degenerates that will act out for real. If they believe someone else suggests having similar and "real" tendancies towards this type of behavior as being normal like them...disaster waiting to happen.

Another reason for people to fear all the crazies out in the world. It could be that one of these persons may be living next door to your family?

Well, regardless of the outcome of the case, PLEASE don't allow him to come back.

He may have broken no law, but it seems to me that anyone whose sensual thoughts, fantasies, and/or entertainments are of such a bizarre, warped nature...should NOT be appointed a public safety officer. Please don't eat the citizens.

the sad part about this story is that the lawyer says it's all a fantasy. People wonder what could have been done to help the killer of Sandy Hook or the killer in Colorado. They say there must be ways that we can identify this and stop it. Now they have a crack pot with stuff all over his computer , being laid off at his job fantasizing over the craziest unthinkable acts and the best the lawyer can come up with is that it means nothing, it's all just a make believe..lock them both up.....

Gosh, that's a pretty broad brush you are holding. The NYPD consists of more than 34,500 uniformed officers. You seem quite confident to characterize that entire police force by the thoughts and actions of one cop.

I remember the hundreds of NYPD police officers, sworn to protect and serve, who ran TOWARD the burning World Trade Center towers on the morning of 9/11/2001; many of them sacrificed their own lives that day in a incredibly courageous act of humanity, attempting to save the lives of strangers.

As you stand on the sidelines and cast aspersions about the men and women of the NYPD, ask yourself if you would have done the same that morning. Never-mind, your comment has already revealed your character to us. "Next."

When someone starts talking about eating people, collecting information about their potential victims, and savoring how they might taste, in my mind it doesn't matter if they actually did it or not. They're sick and twisted individuals that do not belong free within society, ever again.

Not necessarily, Mindie. I'm no legal expert but in the State where I live, what he said sounds a lot like a "terroristic threat" comment. And if so, he could get convicted on such a charge.

I realize the laws vary by State, but I would think at least this is grounds for an injunction and a restraining order--or whatever the correct legal term is.

In any case, no one with that sort of sick-fantasy propensity should be in law enforcement. Ever.

MindieKnows is right. Having a conversation, no matter how unnerving, is not basis enough to convict someone of something. This is especially true in light of the fact that no other materials were found that could prove he intended to act on his fantasies. He's only guilty of having sick fantasies and conversations, neither of which is against the law.

well there's a local kid who said he was going to do something in school after the last school shooting, nothing more than talk and he's on trial tomorrow. It doesn't have to be against the law to be run through the legal system and besides there's more than the law to consider, the department may have rules against what he did and can dismiss him for it.

Not sure what your point is. There very well might be a "local kid" on trial for saying something. But, saying something is not enough to CONVICT someone of something. That's what I said in my post above. Being "run through the legal system" is not the same as convicting.

              Dumb.

They convict people all the time for planning to commit a crime.

You can fantasize all you want, but they went beyond that, and started planning. I am pretty sure the women they planned to eat didn't regard it as just fantasy.

What I would like to know is how did they figure it out, is the FBI mining our emails, there doesn't seem to be any other possibility. I have read about this case several times and there is never a mention of it, no one accidentally spotted an email or whatever, just that the FBI found the emails.

They talked about it just like people talk about their dream home or dream vacation or sleeping with someone. Just because they spoke it doesn't mean they can be convicted. If they didn't actively plan it i.e. buy/obtain the ropes, plan the kidnapping, or whatever else then they can't be convicted of anything. You can charge them with something but that doesn't mean they will be convicted of it.

OK Monkeys, you are arguing points that aren't true.

A second man has been arrested in connection with the case of an NYPD officer who allegedly threatened to kidnap, cook and eat women

              Notice the word 'threatened'.

Valle, of Queens, was previously charged with two counts of attempted kidnapping in the shocking case that includes online transcripts of his alleged plans

              Notice the word 'plans'.

Obviously it's impossible to argue either way without the actual transcripts, but I highly doubt the FBI would get involved if it was actually idle chit/chat. The only person making that claim is a defense attorney, not exactly a reliable source.

They had files on 100 women, but the FBI only interviewed 10. I am guessing those are the 10 they did more than fantasize about, but again, without the actual transcripts it's impossible to know. One can only make educated guesses.

But more importantly, this country has shifted in regards to free speech. How many people have we convicted of planning terrorist activities that didn't posses any explosive or guns of anything beyond the desire to do it.

And as far as a conviction, are you serious, there is no way a jury lets people walk who desire to eat other people. There is no way this loser and an unemployed cop retain the council needed to get out of this. The real question is what are they going to be charged with.

You always call others names that have a difference of opinion than yours?

              ALLEGEDLY threatened.

Notice the word allegedly. It means he might have and he might not have.

Valle, of Queens, was previously charged with two counts of attempted kidnapping in the shocking case that includes online transcripts of his alleged plans

Notice he was PREVIOUSLY charged. Means the charges didn't hold. He wasn't convicted.

I'm not saying these guys don't deserve to be tossed in some windowless hole together for all of eternity. I'm just saying they have to find something that sticks.

"previously charged with two counts of attempted kidnapping..." You don't get charged with attempted kidnapping if the evidence is no more than idle email chatter about sick fantasies. The FBI clearly has more than is being released to the media -- perhaps details of an actual plan.

Notice the word allegedly. It means he might have and he might not have.

What ? The term allegedly is always used before the trial, it's only removed after a conviction. The media is obsessed with the term. I remember when they kept using it with Sandusky and to me it's so irritating. They could have HD video, and would still say the crime is alleged. Sometimes the evidence, not this case, is so overwhelming that drop the alleged moniker IMO.

There are girl Monkeys, and I was only kidding.

And I really hope they have more than just fantasy in this case, that they are going to put away 2 men for just discussing their innermost desires.

If all they have is what they talked to each other about then I don't think it will be enough. Everyone in the world hated Casey Anthony and was so sure the jury would convict and they didn't! The word "allegedly" is used by news journalists to protect themselves from libel lawsuits for saying someone has committed a crime before they have been convicted. It is the right to presumption of innocence that forces news organizations to use the word "allegedly." That's all there is to it. The word "alleged" means someone has claimed that a certain event or situation happened. Example, "the shooter alleged self defense after he allegedly shot the rapist."

If you'll read news more carefully, they always put the word "allegedly" for stories published prior to conviction. OR, they can say "police said he murdered his mistress," instead of printing, "he murdered his mistress."

I have worked surveillance for a number of years, our official legal documents are exactly the same as police reports. They are legally binding court documents. We can see something that is obvious say...a pack of Marlboro cigarettes... but are you REALLY sure they are? Could be Marboro Candy Cigs pulled from the same area as real Marlboro Cigarettes. So you report... object that appeared to be... or a red and white rectangular box with red and white graphics and black lettering...if you want to get overly technical. SO... "allegedly" is also used by law enforcement because everyone is SUPPOSED to be "inncocent until proven otherwise" in this country. *laugh*

Some of you seem to think that the government is supposed to follow rules and laws. That is not the case and a-lot of you supported the last administration to sign away a-lot more of our rights "because I have nothing to hide...makes me feel safer...good ol georgie knows how to keep us safe." when that vile administration signed the PATRIOT Act and pushed it through. It was extended under our current administration with more vile changes. I am sure our next administration will do "just a little bit more".

Now... I don't know about you...if ANYONE had documents and did idle bantor of cooking someone up, details on how they plan on doing it etc etc...it sounds as if it is in a planning phase. This idiot AT THE VERY LEAST should be locked away in an institution.

I believe that plotting with another person to commit a crime is called 'conspiracy'. Using public communication systems to conspire is a federal offense.

Of course no guilt exists with no crime or evidence. But Mindie Knows, no they were not talking just like someone talking about a 'dream home, dream vacation, or sleeping with someone'. I hope you are not confused about why, because that may indicate that your 'elevator just cannot reach the top floor'.

Without evidence, it cannot be proven that they were going to actually kidnap, cook, and eat these women. That is what I mean by my post.

Mindie, are you still harping on this point after 4 days, by restating the obvious ad nauseum?

Of course you cannot convict someone beforehand, and we all agree that they haven't "eaten" anyone (in a "bad" way) that we know of.

                We get that.

                You can stop now.

But, allegedly, that is not the alleged crime allegedly alleged against them.

Not true, society has declined hundreds of times, and every society that is no longer with us, declined right out of existence, like say the Athenians or even Native Americans, and yet I don't remember reading that Normans were eating each other before they disappeared.

I suspect there is constant rate of this kind of defect throughout all of human history, and the more people on the planet, the more people who want to eat each other. I would love to know how these two met and how the topic of eating people came up, "Hey bro, I am starving, sure could go for a my hot neighbors arm..."

Native American society didn't decline from within - they were slaughtered/infected by Europeans along with every other native population of the Western Hemisphere.

                    How many people smoke pot?

How many of those same people eat other people's faces?

                    Your arguement is silly.

100% of murderers drink water...we should outlaw water.

With that great reasoning, everyone should be on pot, because non-pot smokers, like the kid in Connecticut, do a million times more really evil things than pot smokers. Nice try

That guy in Florida also had "undigested pills" in his stomach. The positive test for marijuana was only in the initial toxicology test, and the full toxicology report was never made public, probably because he was on something like PCP and it wouldn't fit in with the media's ranting about the dangers of marijuana.

If this police officer was also a pothead, it would confirm the suspicions of some who wonder what happens to all of the confiscated pot.
