Gabby Giffords visiting Sandy Hook school massacre town

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, leave the Newtown Municipal Building on Friday before heading to visit with families of the victims of last month's Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who has campaigned for stricter gun laws since being shot in Arizona two years ago, is visiting the Connecticut town where a gunman with a semi-automatic rifle massacred 20 children and and six school staffers.

Giffords, who was left partially blind by the 2011 attack at a campaign event, met with local officials at the municipal building in Newtown, Conn.,  Friday afternoon and was to see victims' families at a private home later in the day.

"What drew her was the shared experience — our 26 victims and survivors, and what she experienced in Arizona," Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra told the Newtown Bee.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, and other local officials spoke with the ex-congresswoman about "what we as a society feel, what difference can we make given the horrific things that have happened," Llodra said.

"We talked about gun control, mental health, and society's desensitization to violence," she said.

"We need to use our voice to make a change ... We have to leverage that experience, and the world will listen to us, but we have to move quickly."

Giffords was accompanied by her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, who tweeted about the need for more gun control the day Adam Lanza carried out his bloodbath at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

“20 - 5 year olds gunned down in their own classroom. When will we address this problem as a nation? The time is now,” he wrote.

State worker accused of showing Adam Lanza's body to husband

On Wednesday, Kelly and Giffords met with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, founder of a group called Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

Giffords was greeting constituents outside a Tucson grocery store on Jan. 8, 2011, when Jared Loughner opened fire, killing Arizona's chief federal judge and five others, including a 9-year-old girl. Twelve people, including Giffords, were wounded.

Loughner, who used a 9mm Glock, has since pleaded guilty and been sentenced to life in prison. Giffords, who can't use her right arm and has trouble walking, resigned her House seat a year ago.

What a PSA film this would make : run for public office and get shot at and live to tell about it !

I think the kids want to forget about people getting shot !

and this salem witch uprising going on about banning shooting video games is not the answer. how about being a parent and spend time with them and get to know your kids and see what idiot friends they have, because peer pressure leads to most bad behaviour, which is your kids looking for attention from YOU !

Adam Lanza never played shooting games. He played starcraft and warcraft. They are strategy games. One is in space, the other is medieval times. Its all moving armies around and stuff, there is no shooting. Its all top down view, moving pieces around like a board game..

you know jjj, it's because of people like you that our great Nation has gone to fecal matter but be careful because when some people are so jaded, as you are about Mrs Gifford, the very thing turns upon them, or you. however, it's because of Mrs Giffords and many people like her that our hope in mankind is still existent; these days i find it hard to even think the thought that i'm proud of any of our whorish lawmakers who have sold their souls to Satan, but Mrs Giffords makes me proud of being a citizen of the USA. i would like to meet her someday. so as we've seen that God shows no preference to man, whether rich or poor; so instead of saying " how could this happen here ", maybe we should start saying " how can we stop this from happening here ". someone stated " that we've lost our respect for life " , being the reason why all these killings are being committed; however, it's because we've lost our respect for God!!!

She's a private citizen, jjj, and just like you she has right to travel freely. The fact that one or two news agencies document her travel is outside of her control. Really, outside of her control? You actually believe that? This whole thing was set up and probably by her husband, the great and noble Mr. Kelly. He has a lot to answer to but no one wants to confront him on it. What you ask? A lot of people want to know why there was no security at his wife's meet and greet when she had received death threats prior to the event. Only one person called him out on that, the man who lost his wife in the shooting. That question was nevered answered. So now he's an expert on gun control? Or is he just trying to make up for the shortcoming of not getting security for his wife when it was needed. Now you may say that having security there might not have stopped the shooting but we'll never know will we? Just like the school shooting. I am not condoning what either Jared or Adam did but to blame everything else but the shooter? You try to remedy the situation by treating the symptom but neglect the disease. I normally don't go after someone like Kelly but I think he deserves it. What Kelly is doing right now is no different than Sarah Brady shoving her husband in his wheelchair into ANY congressman's office who had the audacity to question gun control and making sure the press was there to record it, just like now with Giffords. History is repeating itself.

Native American children who survived the killings at the Red Lake Reservation school in Minnesota also went to Newtown to meet with the parents and people there... but not being either white, politicians, astronauts, or celebrity singers, it has never been mentioned by the news media.

I don't guess it's any big deal when a few more Indian kids are killed... not worth mentioning, even when the survivors travel across the country to offer blessings from the heart.

The vitriol being directed at Gabby Giffords in this thread is unbelievable. None of these morons seems to have considered the fact that she is reminded of what lax gun laws have wrought every waking minute of her life by her partial blindness, her loss of function in her arm, and her difficulty even walking. It's hardly surprising that she and her husband have made it an issue. Just like James Brady, the former press secretary to the most CONSERVATIVE president in recent history, Ronald Reagan, for whom the now-expired Brady Law was named.

I think it's a wonderful gesture for Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly to visit the Newtown victims' families. Whenever one suffers a personal tragedy of any kind, it is helpful talking to people who have walked in your shoes and can understand your pain.

These people who have endured such great loss at the hands of mentally disturbed individuals who gained access to military-style weapons and killed innocent victims, are the very people to lead the charge on stricter gun laws.

I applaud and support their efforts.

Thank God for the human beings who are FOR realistic gun control for semi-automatics and automatics... and the ridiculous clips that can shoot on and on and on. I pray to God something is done to ensure intelligent screening, registration and licensing. I don't want to hear the crap about the criminals... where the hell do you think they're getting them? They're breaking into YOUR house after all the BRAGGING you do about what a big man you (think you) are! Yeah, you're going to shoot anyone that breaks in... IF your home... and what about when you shoot a member of your family cause you're freaked out about a noise in the night? We'll all have the same compassion for your stupidity as you have for these most recent victims and their families.

Food for thought... have you looked at any of the small children in your life and considered the absolute terror of those poor little kids as they saw their teachers and classmates get shot repeatedly as they waited for their turn?????

B!tches, the so called 'right to bear arms' does NOT supersede the 'right to LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness'.

Our country seems to have lost all compassion for our fellow human beings... the comments on here by gun enthusiasts show a total lack of any intelligent, rational thought, just pure selfishness and cruelty.

I was, at one point, pretty well trained in most kinds of weapons...and I question whether I would be a real deterrent standing inside the door of a school with a rifle (and no chambered round). It seems to me I would simply be the guy that was killed first.

This anti-gun propaganda which used to be constantly repeated by the news media was disproved years ago by PHD research done at the University of Florida which was cited with approval in recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions validating private citizens' right to own guns for self protection; instances of people lawfully using a gun to protect themselves from criminal acts far outnumber accidental shootings. If you want to disbelieve the true statistics, fine. I suggest you keep a copy of the BS stats close at hand so when the local ghouls are in the process of killing your kids or raping your wife you can wave em in their face and they'll realize what they're doing isn't really happening and they'll magically vanish! Oh yeah, also keep a copy of the criminal statutes that outlaw murder and rape handy so that they'll realize that their actions have severe penalties. That always works as a deterrent.

The Kleck studies are flawed, but even so, the number given by the DOJ is approximately 108,000 defensive firearm uses per year. The number published by another source, midway between the DOJ/BJS and the Kleck (among other studies) 2.5 million, estimates the real number to be more like 900,000. I'd don't remember the source offhand, but it's easy enough to locate, merely by using the magic tool called "Google" and the search terms "defensive firearm statistics."

        #4.9 - Sat Jan 5, 2013 5:32 AM EST

It would be more accurate to say "SOME consider the Kleck studies to be flawed". The validity rests upon your personal opinion as to whether the portion of the Kleck study which estimates unreported gun use (i.e., people who used guns as a threat to prevent crime without reporting the incident) involved valid criteria. Even so, you are correct in stating that a sober look at all of the "actual use" stats shows a hell of a lot of people are using guns for lawful defensive purposes. I've personally used a gun 3 times as threat to prevent a burglary (the burgler took off running, I couldn't catch him; decided I needed to stop smoking), and 2 gang attacks (punks were beatin up a young kid, I fired in the air, they took off runnin; and drunks were about to attack me, I showed em my gun, they backed off). I never reported the incidents (figured the cops had bigger fish to fry). I've been shooting for 56 years- all types of firearms-never had an accident. I've been using knives for even longer; have cut myself a few times! My personal stats show knives are much more dangerous than guns!

How many criminals or mentally ill will do that??? And then they will be the only ones with the guns, leaving the honest people at risk. Then you liberals are so soft hearted to the criminals. Lochner should have been executed for killing those people.......there were 100 people who witnessed it. Then there is the Foot Hood shooter.......he should be executed...but will probably get a life sentence too.....there was 100 people who witnessed it too. We need real punishment for criminals for one thing. We need to identify mentally insane people and give them proper care and/or lock them up. That would be a big step forward.

I guess them Japanese have a really high rate of death from firearms since they are disarmed right? With their 553 deaths in 2007.

In other words they had 0.4 deaths per 100,000 people, in any gun related homicide in 2007.

          The U.S. had a 5.61 deaths per 100,000 people in 2007.

          That's a 1400% difference.

How could Japan have 553 deaths from firearms if they cannot legally own firearms? Guess the killers decided to ignore the law. Wouldn't happen in the U.S.; our killers respect the law.

U.S. lets everyone have guns Kage, why aren't these lawful gun owners stopping these homicides?

all this hype about gun control...look I feel for the families of SH...but in all reality...they could have just as easily been killed with a knife... the gun was just a tool...I have kids of my own, and love them dearly... but to say they would be better off with stricter gun control is a joke.... how about we actually enforcing the laws we have...we are so quick as a nation to react with a knee jerk, that in the end all we do is make things worse for ourselfs as a nation. You want to change laws that will effect our kids... stop protecting criminals with rights. if they are breaking the law... bust thier a$$es...there is no disiplen instilled in todays kids as a nation, parents are sucking, law enforcment sucks... kids get a slap on the wrist now for anything they do wrong.... thats what needs to change.... gun laws... are not the fix

Even a slap on the wrist will get you booked for abuse or domestic violence which in turn gets you a felony which in turn gets your firearms rights revoked. Yet these evil whacked out MF's that commits mass murder gets three hots and a cot for life. Pretty damned ironic.

Rob, around the same time that this occurred a man attacked a school in china with a knife. He injured around 25-30 kids. Guess what?

              No one died.

How many of these kids would be alive if he had only come in with a knife?

When law abiding Americans have only kitchen utensils to defend themselves, will the street gangs disarm?

Its good that things like this receive attention, because many people would rather sweep this incident under the rug and continue to do thing like they always have been, until the next school gets shot up.

Its the same method we use for the Holocaust, learn about the causes and effects of it, and REMEMBER, so similar event never happen again, we need to do the same for school shootings, we need to know what caused it, gun control laws which are ineffective, sure there are background checks, but they only check the purchaser, not other inhabitants in the purchasers house.

I will say this, i am a believer in gun rights, i've owned and fired guns in my own lifetime, but i also believe in sensible gun control, i dont believe citizens should have access to assault rifles, fully automatic even semi-automatic weapons.

Wow, whole lotta hate here tonite. I must have missed something, because I don't recall Giffords being a "media whore" and on camera all the time. She was an elected official, so she's pretty much wired to try to change things. Not only was she injured, but people with her were killed. If she wants to take that experience and use it to make positive change, I don't get what's wrong with that. Sarah Brady did it after her husband was shot in the Reagan assasination attempt, and she affected positive change. Was she a media whore? It's not like Giffords made a speech during her visit.

Look, I'm Republican (though not conservative) and I own a rifle for target shooting. But I still think there's room for a lot of change in our gun laws. Not stripping people of guns -- I believe Giffords owned guns too. But there's room to be reasonable, with the assault weapons, large clips, and finding a way to identify mental health risks. I sure haven't found California's gun laws too restrictive. Unfortunately, none of these changes will keep handguns out of criminals' hands.

                  Pragmatic Brit

Why is this phase - "sensible gun control or reasonable gun control" the new catch phase? Don't you think we (gun owners - I'm not lumping you in with the other gun owners mostly because I don't believe you own or have ever owned guns) haven't heard it before? Every time someone uses a gun illegally, we hear that phase. More gun control will solve the problem! Yes, it will! Pass these law and you can pat yourself on the back, say you helped save the world and do NOTHING else to correct the real problem until it inevitably happens again. You turn away from the problem because it's hard to face but want "sensible/reasonable gun control" because it's easy and it won't affect you (or at least you don't think it will but you would be wrong in thinking that.) You bring up the Holocaust as an example of not forgetting so it doesn't happen again but remember it was also the prosecution of the perpetrators went a lot farther in making sure it didn't happen again.

As far as whether an us "ordinary citizens" should have access to the so called assault rifles (which for once get it right they are semi automatic NOT AUTOMATIC, which told me you are NOT a gun owner past or present), when you or a family member is getting beat up, stabbed or heaven forbid shot by some criminal and one of us "ordinary citizens with an "assault weapon" stop him are you really going to feel bad for the criminal?

If you moniker is correct, how's that gun control thing working for your countrymen? You know the ones that live in one of the most monitored, most security camera installations in the world, country.

actually most guns in the household will be used first for suicide of a household member, and secondly for the accidental shooting of another household member. defending the household comes in far down the list. you can look it up. and, just so you know, i realize gun control won't work. most gun owners aren't as wacko as the small percentage who feel compelled to get on public forums with their mindless rants, fortunately.

Look I agree with everyone with the right to carry a fire arm. I have two guns myself for personal protection and believe in the right to protect my home.

I do believe gun owners who want assault rifles should have gun safes. I believe it's the responsible thing to do it's called being Responsible. Are 100 round and 30 magazines the right choice, that is a debate. If you do own them, then prove you have a gun safe.

Anyone that has a mental child in the home that doesn't own a gun safe, shouldn't have them. Just my thoughts and being a responsible gun owner.

Sure JOHNNY, we get it. You're a Reich Wing gun dip@!$%# who gets his rocks off with firearms. Fact is, we make up 5% of the world's population and guess what??? We have fully 50% of the world's firearms. Do you see something wrong with this picture? And please, spare me the NRA talking points about "guns don't kill people......" and all the mindless drivel about the Second Ammendment. You clowns know nothing about the Constitution. You know who does? Our president, that's who. He taught Constitutional law as the University of Chicago. It says that firearms can be owned, it doesn't way what kind or where they can be carried. Can I mount a brace of .50 cal Brownings on the hood of my car? What about rocket launchers? I'm kind of partial to a nice little howitzer or perhaps a 4" mortar. Does the Constitution give me the right to have all of these killing machines? I doubt even you would say yes. And if so, it means there have to be limiations on the kinds of firearms and magazines that are used. I know this is wasted breath with you gun crazies who fancy yourself great patriots because you have guns but this latest incident is a game changer.

I live less than 15 minutes from Newtown. Several of the teachers killed there lived in my town and we held the wake for them and buried them here as well. We've had enough funerals for the time being, thank you very much. I've been to gun shows, I know the kind of crap that goes on there, purchasing guns without background checks and all the rest. This insanity has to stop.

I wouldn't be surprised if the government was behind both shootings, AND the theater shootings to further their plan of disarming the country. And you don't know jack @!$%# about the Bill of Rights or any other documents for that matter. Spare me the NRA rant. I've heard all this crap repeatedly. Too bad you gun goobers aren't equally concerned with civil rights, world hunger and disease and all the other issues effecting mankind. But no, you only get a stiffy over your dumb ass guns. How quaint.

You're wrong about Inouye! It wasn't his credentials as a war hero or even being a US Senator that gave him the right to say whatever he pleases, it was he was a citizen of the United States of America. He could say whatever he pleases because it was and is a RIGHT guaranteed by the First Amendment. You know the amendment which is guaranteed by the Second Amendment! The First Amendment gives a citizen the right to free speech (even in it's present corrupted state). Your post points to a widely held flaw in a lot of people's thinking today " Obviously, I know SO MUCH more than you so I will tell you how to live your life, what to say, what to do what to eat, etc, etc, etc. and you will thank me oh so much for making your life better even as we strip away your liberties, you poor sheep you!

Don't you have the capacity think things through?? Don't they realize that the paper has put Police Officers and their families at risk? What about the Prison Guards or the Guards at the County Jail? Their lives are now in danger. Then of course the people who don't have a permit are in danger. FOOLS! Only interested in their agenda. Don't give a damn about people. LIBERAL IDIOTS!

SLODON, we have the same kind of "capacity" that you gun goobers do. Namely, a 30 round magazine or better still, a 100 round drum so you can take out an entire town. After all, it is your "Constitutional Right" now isn't it???

And FYI, those names are all public knowledge, nothing illegal whatsoever. After all, you cretins hide behind the law and your "second ammendment" rights, but now you have a problem with someone else taking advantage of the law?

My good friend. I see your still not the WIZ. True they are public knowledge. BUT you don't have to plaster it all over the world. Now there are Jail personnel being threaten by the inmates. You know the type of threats. "I know where you live" Would you like to be threatened like that? What about the people who don't have a permit? Now the crooks know exactly who has and who hasn't a firearm in their house. Does that make them safer? What house would you rob??

SLODON, well now you know how I feel living around gun toting goons. The statistics don't lie, households that have firearms have dramatically far higher rates of both homicides and suicides. That is a fact fella, you can look it up. The NRAs answer to gun violence is more guns. They want everybody packing, even school teachers and most likely your Auntie Matilda for that matter. I think we already have enough guns in circulation, 300 million approximately. The rest of the world thinks we're out of our frigging minds and guess what, they happen to be right.

I can understand Gabby Giffords visiting CT. Who knows it probably feels better to have someone there that has been through the same experience. That's for Newtown, CT to decide.

I do believe there must be adequate security at schools. It may not be a pistol packing teacher because that's not right for every community or school. It might be a retired policeman to stand guard. Heck we could stop veteran unemployment if we put vets in our public schools. Most people view the military more favorably than the police, so I think public outcry would be minimal. Anything we do must be balanced and comprehensive, without putting a greater burden on law-abiding citizens that use guns.

FRANK, there were two armed guards at Columbine and that didn't seem to help too much. As for placing a "burden" on gun owners, too damn bad. We live in a highly regimented society. I have to jump through more hoops to register my car than purchasing a rifle. And the proliferation of these insane quasi-military AR-15s and the like are totally out of hand. These things are killing machines, nothing less. That's why the body count was so insane with the episode here on Connecticut.

Actually the AR-15 and M-16 weapons will and have killed many, but they are not near as powerful as most hunting rifles.

A Remington Gamemaster in .308 or 30-06 will do far far more damage, is semi auto and can have another clip put in it just as fast as any little AR-15. An AR-15 won't go though a block wall, the Remington Gamemaster in .308 or 30-06 will make dust of it.

But do most hunting rifles fire as full automatics? semi-automatics? and they be modified to fire 100 rounds in less than a minute? THAT is why Assault rifles are considered weapons for war, not recreation.

Wow as a self proclaimed "gun owner" you don't know sh*t about guns do you? Even your so called "assault rifles" fire only semi-automatic (which is one shot per pull of the trigger, just in case you didn't know that). There are hunting rifles that are semi automatic does that make them assault rifles? For the record fully automatic weapons are tightly regulated by the ATF so they are not and haven't been the issue. As for any gun being able to fire 100 rounds in less than a minute please identify which guns they are, you being such a knowledgeable "gun owner".

Your so called "assault rifles" are not the problem in America today. They are just easier to deal with than with the real problem.

Seems Commander Kelly has went off the deep end with his rants and hate comments he now makes towards firearms owners, of course he doesn't belittle his Wife "Gabby", whom in less he forgets was/is a fire arms owner and has a concealed carry firearms permit in Arizona.

Kell's grasp of the facts is less than accurate on even the Conn. Shooting as in one of his many off base "Tweets" show. He tweeted,

" Kelly tweeted, "20 - 5 year olds gunned down in their own classroom. When will we address this problem as a nation? The time is now."

Apparently Comm. Kelly doesn't even know how old the children are in 1st grade. This man is the last one that should speak on firearms as I'm sure his Facts are just as inaccurate in that matter too.

Uh BILL, Gabby Giffords never made it a secret that she had firearms. All the more reason for other gun owners to take heed of what she is saying.

And as I mentioned before, I live two towns over from Newtown, have friends there and know the town very well. Beyond that, one of the cops who was one of the very first to respond to the seen lives here in my town. From what I've been told, the seen was so gruesome that some of the cops are going to retire. He riddled these kids bodies with numerous rounds, sometimes as much as a dozen. And I'd say that Commander Kelly has just as much right as you do to air your opinions, and really more right than you do. He's been personally effected by gun violence and you hate the fact that "one of your own" has taken a dissenting view. Getting shot can do that to you.

Ozzie Boy-2719086, I agree with your #17.1 and 17.4 and I still like Gabby just as always. And yeah getting shot can change ones mind I'm sure. Kelly has said some pretty nasty stuff about people in Arizona and firearms holders. He has his right to his opinion, my point was he never mentions that his wife was/is a firearms owner and he doesn't seem to want to say those same things about her,,I call that a little one sided.

As to your motorcycles,,,be safe, watch for cages, and keep the oily side down.

Pot meet Kettle, Kettle meet Pot! You talk about the NRA and one lines! Reading through your previous poste, you throw out every known insult and name ever used against gun owners (even a new one - gun goobers). You bring in rocket launchers, howitzer, machine guns, 50 cal guns, massacres, all the emotional buttons that the gun control groups use but of course you're not puking them up are you?

Regarding the Constitution and who know and doesn't know - your example of President Obama teaching constitutional law - what the only way to know the Constitution is to teach constitutional law? He has a complete disregard for the Constitution and will not let it stand in the way of getting what he wants. But then again you and people like Pragmatic Brit will do all the hard work for him won't you? You will give up any right (or take away anyone else's right, especially) so you can feel "safe".

You can start with his voting record as a senator if you'd like, not to mention all the on and off record remarks. And then the books he has published. It's all on public record for everyone to see, hear, and read forever more. Break free from that cacoon of ignorance and edumacate thy self!

Aren't you afraid that some "gun goober" (where the f*ck you got that one I don't know) might start shooting up the place? Or you don't worry about that because you know what a "gun goober" looks like and you stay away from "Those" places where they may be. Yeah, you go to the "right" place and hang out with the "good" people.

That's right, you THINK. When I research all the avenues and can clearly see in which direction they head, then draw my OWN conclusion based on my OWN research as to exactly what is going on here, no amount of influx from others will change my thoughts on it simply because I AM AN INDEPENDENT THINKER. I will listen to others opinions but I will NOT allow those outside opinions to sway my thoughts. After taking in the big picture and staying up to date and on top of it, as far as I'm concerned there is absolutely no doubt in my mind whatsoever about what is going on here. PERIOD! You are free to think as you please.

And what about mental health for the mentally impaired? Don't you think that those two subjects would go one hell of a long way towards healing our society of it's ills. Maybe even possibly just as far or perhaps even FARTHER than the ONLY thing that is being screamed about which is gun control?
