Rewards planned in possibly linked killings of elderly San Bernardino women

California Department of Motor Vehicles

Mary Beth Blaskey, 76, who was found dead by one of her sons Nov. 14 in San Bernardino, Calif.

Police on Monday are planning to announce rewards of $10,000 for information leading to the resolutions of the killings of three elderly women in San Bernardino whose cases might be linked.

The women were found dead in their ransacked homes in San Bernardino, police said. In at least two cases, items were taken from the home, police said.

On Nov. 14, one of the sons of Mary Beth Blaskey, 76, found her body inside her North Fremontia Drive home when he stopped by her house to give her a ride to the doctor’s office. Someone stole her Lexus, TV and computers, police said.

Blaskey’s youngest son, Gunner, said he wants justice but won’t be satisfied by the police announcement Monday.

“No matter what they do, it won’t bring my mom back,” he said. “My heart’s broken. She loved everybody, and everybody loved her. She liked to laugh and have fun. She was beautiful and intelligent. She was the world’s greatest mom.”

The body of Wanda Lee Paulin, 86, was found on Dec. 12, 2010, inside her home in the 5000 block of Mountain View Drive. She was discovered by a relative who went to check on her when she didn’t show up for church, according to the San Bernardino Sun.

Paulin was a bookkeeper for more than 23 years at the First Presbyterian Church in San Bernardino, according to a neighborhood newsletter called The El Chicano Weekly.

The church website on Saturday urged congregants to sign letters of support to Gov. Jerry Brown to release reward money from the state to help solve her case. The church said it was offering pre-written letters and access to laptops and stationery for those people who want to write their own letters.

“We do this to protest violence against this sister in Christ,” the website read. “We also do it as a sign of love and support for Joanne & the rest of Wanda’s family.”

Susan Hassett found the body of Josephine Kelley, her 90-year-old mother, in the 2800 block of Muscupiabe Drive on Sept. 15, 2005, the Sun wrote.

No details about how the women were killed were released, nor would police say whether they were killed in a similar manner.

"Poverty stricken psychos with no value for human life"!?? Come on, Reeblite, you don't have any idea who killed these ladies.. It could just as easily and, this is my guess, be some sick middle-aged psycho like Dennis Rader, the BTK serial killer or some rich kids killing helpless old ladies for the fun of it! It's stupid to try and play guessing games with killers, it's usually the least likely person in the neighborhood.. Some person or persons that everyone thinks is the nicest guy (or gal) in the world.. Police always say to look at family and people in the neighborhood first because the majority of those who commit murder are usually close by.. Let's not be blaming this on some poor kids from the wrong side of the tracks UNTIL we have a lot more information!

There was an article just a few weeks ago about some guy that wrestled a gun from a cop and managed to shoot 3 cops (IIRC) in the middle of a police station full of armed and trained officers. So good luck to your mom getting the upper hand before they get the drop on her cuz the mere fact of owning a gun, being an "avid" gun owner or even being armed at the time doesn't preclude you from getting shot.

Also, thanks for making this about guns first with you unwarranted pro-gun arguments.

PS: Also how they catch whoever is doing this.

@Vision: Cops are trained to NOT shoot first. Or did you not know that? Your story is an EXTREME rarity and you know it! And these women had their homes broken into. By DEFAULT that validates a gun ownership comment. So go pound sand! There are tens of millions of women who are armed and have concealed weapons permits. Some are eventually unfortunate enough to have to put their training to the test. Most succeed. Like this one:

Yeah, I've also heard about stories non-professional gun owners that haven't been trained not to shoot first shoot someone that isn't really a criminal. Like this one:

Just an FYI, I'm not such a little old lady; but I'm a bigger old(er) lady. I don't live in California, but we have our share of crazies in Ohio. Nevertheless, I and my home are protected, too. And yes, I'm a crack shot. I abhor violence, but I do target shoot for entertainment. I've taught a class or two, as well, on proper usage, storage, defense, etc. No, this vine is not about firearms, but I just wanted to get that out of the way.

I sincerely offer my condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. What a terrible tragedy for you all. Please accept my sympathy for your loss.

Folks in San Bernardino may want to draw closer to their neighbors and help look out for one another. Those who prey on the weak and elderly will eventually move to those less weak and less docile. It's in everyone's best interests to get this/these predator(s) off the streets. The sooner, the better.

The guy got the gun from a woman cop inside the police station. There have been several stories in the news over the last year of elderly women shooting intruders. This news site refrained from carrying the story of the Atlanta mother who took her children into a closet to hide from a man who broke into her home; luckily, she also carried her Smith & Wesson with her because he found her and the children and she shot him five times, stepped over him and took the children and ran to a neighbor's home to wait for the police.

And by the way, she had called her husband and the police when she heard the intruder breaking in. The police, with their legal law enforcement guns, did get there in time to protect her and her children.

Every one can give a theory and mine is that most home owners don't have the mind set to shoot someone. They most likely hesitate to pull the trigger on another human being, standing there saying, "I"ll shoot! I'll shoot"!" giving the intruder the seconds available to take the gun away.

If they would just shoot the minute they see the person inside the home those home owners being shot with their own guns would stop becoming statistics.

@Jhawke

While I usually agree with you, I can't this time! Our "justice" system is so screwed up that there are lots of people in prison for crimes they didn't commit. I think accurate trials would better serve the American public than speedy executions! We'd be a lot better off with police and prosecutors who were more concerned about guilt or innocence, and less about their career advancement. It doesn't protect the public one bit to lock up or execute the wrong person! Before you start trying to call me a liberal or"criminal apologist" let me assure you that you would be way off base. If you look up any of my other previous posts you'll see that I'm a conservative, who's seen our legal system in action too many times to believe that mistakes aren't made.

On the topic of the death penalty... this isn't just a "liberal" issue but a valid concern in a system with privatized prisons and police officers under presure to catch someone (anyone) and pin the crime on them rather than properly determine innocence or guilt. Otherwise I'd have no issue with killing off some of these bastards (and have no issue now, if the evidence is overwhelming).

But I'm sure you'll just keep addressing the lables and peg people as "conservatives" or "liberals" rather than addressing the actual issues.

Whatever we do, we should definitely not allocate any funds for medic alert systems or zone their living quarters for assistance canines so they would have help to repel thieves and killers.

Any federal and state funds on hand or that can be borrowed have to be used for Dream Acts or added to EBT cash cards so the receipients can get money at tobacco, liquour and video stores and strip club joints.

      Larry,

Do you seriously believe that some 90 year old lady would be able to take a gun and aim with any degree of accuracy at someone who was intent on killing her? In all probability you would just be providing the intruder with another weapon. I'm not arguing against guns for self-defense, I am simply pointing out that there are people who would not benefit from same.

There are many Asian cultures in the U.S. that still respect the elderly. I'm not Asian, but my elderly mother and I (no spring chicken) have always been treated with respect by Asians, especially. The younger generation, especially the "thug" generation, have no respect for anyone, but especially the elderly. Unfortunately, the elderly are regarded as the lowest of the low on the respect scale (or, rather, no respect scale). You can see examples of this everyday. The elderly walk too slow, become confused easily, are easily taken advantage of with some of the younger generation regarding them as easy prey or as a nuisance to be ignored.

I take care of my 84-year-old mom and sometimes I even lose patience, but I really notice it whenever we're out somewhere. My mom is totally ignored and almost run over by people in too big a hurry, lack of any kind of patience, as if she is taking up valuable space. One time, in a department store, she was almost run over by an impatient mom using her baby's stroller as a weapon. Had I not been there, she would have tripped and fallen. I yelled at the woman, but she pretended to ignore me and went on her busy way.

I hope they find these killers so no one else has to suffer the loss of life as a person, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother. These women have people who appreciate and love them. They have endured much to get to the age they were, only to be taken advantage of and killed for material possessions.

I'm sure if you would look into those honor-the-seniors Asian cultures, that you would notice that families live in multi-generation homes. If Dad gets a job 300 miles away, the whole family, including the grandparents, pack u[ and move. Granny doesn't get her nice quiet senior living apartment, where she doesn't have to put up with noisy grandkids and crying babies, or can come and go as she pleases.

Hmm, too much generalizing in that statement. The elderly are not ALL mistreated here in the US and I'm sure they're not ALL "cherished" around the world. Why do so many bash America? There's plenty of bad in many other places as well.

ElkMeadow - Multi-generational households are common in quite a few cultures. America is becoming one of them. All generations can benefit from living with others of all ages, including the elderly. Living with other generations promotes tolerance, patience, familial ties and may actually help the elderly stay sharp, lessen depression, and make them feel as if they are an active part of the family.

Seniors living in assisted-living lack and want social communication. They suffer from depression, isolation, boredom and lack of mental stimulation. Yes, it's quiet, but at what price?

Midnight read my post below and you will find out about my zero tolerance of violence. But to turn a violent crime into racism is HORRIBLE and if you have the littlest understanding of the law, also illegal. To me, the guilty is guilty because the guilty committed a crime, NOT because the guilty had a certain skin color. Most gun men in mass murders are not colored, rather white, but still I only focus on the criminal and the crime, regardless of skin color. A violent criminal deserves the death penalty, within 6 months, no appeals.

It is the constant environment of hatred and intolerance that contributes to our violent culture. As an earlier poster noted, this society is self-absorbed and vindictive and advocates violence and still more violence for every social ill. We treat the elderly badly, just wanting them to hurry up and die so that we won't have to provide social security and medicare. When we discuss cutting social security, is this not a form of violence toward a ninety year old woman? Do you expect her to go out and get a job in order to make up the difference between her reduced social security and her living expenses? Everyone has something nasty to say about anyone who is not earning a few hundred thousand a year and then they say that the intruder who kills an elderly woman is evil? How evil is it to be willing to starve that same elderly woman by reducing her income and her medicare? The only difference is the speed with which she is murdered.

Furthermore, another FACT: The Communist Party USA strongly ENDORSED obama. Google it, and then post. The Communist Party USA endorsed obama both in 2008 and in 2012. FACTS. FACTS. FACTS.

Yet, if allowed to, it wouldn't bother me one bit to dispatch this vermin with one well placed shot to it's head just like I do when I'm ready to butcher a beef or a hog, except that I would wanna make damn sure the low life SOB was looking right down the barrel when I pulled the trigger. Somebody who preys on elderly women living alone had to have done these crimes.Richard Ramirez was one example in California and he has yet to be executed. There is no justice for victims and their families in America because the criminals seem to have more rights than the law abiding citizens.

That is the problem! There is too much power in the defense and too little in the prosecution. It has to get better balanced. Speed up the executions. There is no rehabilitation for such crimes - the death penalty is a proper punishment for the crime...why all the delays? Too give the defense repeated chance of "rescuing" a killer? and at the same time cost the tax payers money? It has to go.

The Penal system in California is a joke. They have over 600 on death row forever. The People let this happen. Instead of demanding justice they just look the other way and let the folks that were elected do absolutely whatever they wish. It's called money! The more appeals, trials and stays of execution means money in the pockets of Judges, Lawyers and rights activists. This of course comes out of the pockets of The People Of California. I lived most of my life there and left 10 years ago. Some say they would rather live in California then Texas. Take a look at the Worst States to do business in. California was voted last for the past two years. Businesses leaving in droves and you wonder why. There are many problems other then cities going bankrupt and keep prisoners on Death Row forever. It is a sad state of affairs. I also feel bad for the families of these women that were murdered right in their homes. There will always be criminals for a number of reasons. Greed, hatred, bigotry or maybe just because they can. If there is anything to be tough on it's these type of crimes committed. It's up to everyone to make the World a better place to live in.

First, my condolences to the victims families - I share your sorrow.

Secondly, find the guilty, and give them the death penalty, within 6 months...no appeals. That will send a clear message of zero-tolerance of violent crimes. This means that we have to make our criminal system harsher for violent crimes. There is no other way.

underemployed, YES, with violent crimes that CLEARLY has charged the violent criminal. There has been cases where the guilty has been proven guilty, has confessed guilty and even WANTED the death penalty....and anti-death advocates and lawyers are flocking around to STOP the execution. That is COSTLY and STUPID. Make the violent crimes speedy! Look at high profile cases where people like OJ and CA got away with murder...because the defense team was better than reality and common sense. That has to go!

Decibella.. so apparently you couldn't care less about the innocent people your wonderful idea for hasty executions would have killed. You know, all those who languished on death row for YEARS only to eventually be found innocent? You know.. the whole PURPOSE why we have an appeals process so that we aren't just killing innocent people willy-nilly out of bloodlust?

Why, exactly, do you think making EXTRA DAMN SURE we are kiling the right person is a BAD THING?

                      #14.4 - Sun Jan 6, 2013 5:16 PM EST

Christina, not willy-nilly. There are many cases where the evidence is OVERWHELMING. Those are the cases I am talking about. In the CA case, she was found not guilty, because the defense came up with one theory: the child could have drowned and CA's father made her be quiet about it. Just because of ONE defense theory, the other evidence fade. That is not fair to the victims. Personally, I think we are on a wave to encourage crimes of this nature, since the defense is so powerful, there is no fear of a consequence. In other words, it pays off to kill...the punishment will be mild or the killer will get off.

The only way that will decrease this type of crimes are tougher penalty for violent criminals and a higher minimum living level. USA is the richest nation in the world, yet has a no safety-net and a very low minimum poverty level. Something is off, and it is not because the people are "lazy". We have to look for other variables. If we don't, we will keep running around in circles.

Unfortunately I am convinced that society sees us as throw aways once we reach age 65, we are ignored by most people, shoved aside and pushed to the back at almost any venue. This country has no respect for the elderly, my most sincere condolences to these families and may the victims rest in peace. Hopefully the police will find the party(s) responsible and they will be convicted, let us also hope that if they are juveniles that they face adult court and punishment.

Such a dreadful and sad way for an elder's life to end. I truly do not comprehend the complete lack of any instinct for honoring life as evidenced in these killings. The women were all elderly, surely they could have been robbed without being hurt. The world seems brutal to me, and either I'm reading more or there actually is more brutality. Condolences and prayers to the families and friends of these women.
