Subscribe to RSSNEW YORK -- The burned, naked body found on a beach Sunday has been identified as a missing 14-year-old girl.
Law enforcement sources told NBC New York on Tuesday that the body found in Gerritsen Beach in Brooklyn was Shaniesha Forbes, who had been missing since Friday.
She was burned on her legs, arms and hands and was found face up on the beach. A law enforcement official told NBC New York that investigators also located a kerosene can and signs of a bonfire nearby.
The cause of death is still pending.

Seems it is sicker the closer you get to large population centers where there SHOULD be more motivation to treat one another more humanely, as it seems cohabitation in dense population would require living by Golden Rule or at minimum cooperation at least.

A short concise story. First report of limited facts. My compliments to the reporters for resisting the impulse to "flesh it out" with extraneous nonsense.
Secondly, I have scanned through most of the comments here. Forgive me if I missed one that applies. NO ONE seems to have noticed "and signs of a bonfire nearby", sure got the kerosene can part, however! IS IT POSSIBLE a bunch of youths were having a beach party, one got to drunk and fell in the fire and the rest got scared and ran? This scenario will not change the suffering of this child's family one bit and like all here they have my sympathy. Does this tragedy require another innocent life be ruined!? Hope none of the "bloodmongers" here ever serve on a jury.
Good point realitycheck, and once the coroner determines cause of death that will be answered. Lung tissue burned, etc., died in the fire. Other signs of trauma/death and no lung tissue burned will indicate death from another source and a body burned in a (very poor) attempt to conceal evidence.
That is the follow up story that we may or may not see on the front page.

This young girl was the niece of a police sergeant. She was quite attractive and, if I understand correctly, went to a school where she was bullied by other girls who were more affluent. They teased her about wearing the same "weave" every day, and things of that nature. A close friend said she was crying the night of the bonfire.
Condolences and sympathy to the family and friends. Few things are as tragic as the unhappy life of a teenager.... especially to the teen in question.
Sometimes, capital punishment just isn't enough..
My family suffered a violent crime when I was 10 Years old, my mom was kidnapped and a good friend of the family was stabbed in the heart and killed by the man that kidnapped her. The in-justice in that is he was sentenced to life in a mental hospital, that means that the taxes my mom paid and the taxes that I paid have fed and clothed and given the man free medical care since1978. I say that because what should have happened is he should have been strapped to a gurney and put to death for what he did. When the person who murdered this young girl is found and convicted they should be taken to the same park to the same bench stripped naked and doused with kerosene and set ablaze. Some will say that is not justice but revenge and I would agree the girl deserves vengeance, and others will say that the death penalty is not a deterrent, and to that I would say, that if the man that kidnapped my mom and the person that killed the young lady was put to death then that would be a guarantee that neither of the people would never ever again hurt anyone in anyway at all. Find the person that killed this young woman try them and if convicted do us all a favor and out the rabid dog down.

Eugene first of all my mother and I have found peace of mind, and we do speak to someone about what happened. First of all we are both Christians and I have been a licensed minister for over 20 years so we pray to God for peace of mind. And because the man that kidnapped my mom is eligible for parole every so often we are notified of a parole hearing and we go down and testify to be sure this sick demented pervert stays locked up. Now Eugene remember that this man stabbed a good family friend that worked hard and loved his family. He kidnapped my mother and because she shares the story of her ordeal she does not mind me sharing it here, the sick pervert raped my mom in a graveyard on his parents gravesite. So Eugene in this I believe I have a unique perspective to gather my conclusions and the conclusion is this the man that hut my family deserves to be put to death, and whatever person or persons are responsible for the death of the young teenage girl deserve to be put down like the sick rabid dogs that they are.
The comment above doesn't sound like something that a Christian and/or a licensed minister would/should be saying ("deserve to be put down like the sick rabid dogs that they are"). And some pretty solid, unquestionable proof would have to be available in order to give someone a death sentence. Otherwise, innocent people who are in the wrong place at the wrong time are being put to death, and how can that be considered "justice"?

Last month in Florida we put a former police officer with an undiagnosed mental illness to death. After Manuel Pardo was a successful and commendable officer of the law, he suddenly began to admire Adolf Hitler and collect Nazi memorabilia. Something changed in his mind and he became unhinged. He began murdering drug dealers for no reason. Looking at the age at which it happened, one suspects an undiagnosed schizo affective disorder. However, since Pardo admitted his crimes on the stand he was not permitted an evaluation by a psychiatrist.

In case you haven't paid attention to your Bible and this was a crime committed by a person - if the person who committed this horrible act simply accepts your God as his savior and asks for forgivenness, that person will be allowed into your heaven, while the innocent young girl could spend the rest of her eternity in hell if she doesn't fully believe in your God as her savior.
So, if you happen to make it to heaven, you could very well be chillin on a cloud next to this person.

If the person does it because they're afraid of punishment or going to hell, it's not enough. They have to be sincerely regretful, and not just sorry they got caught or found out. Can you understand how much sincere regret is involved with a murder? They have to turn themselves in as a part of their conversion if they haven't been caught.
They also must comprehend that they have taken a life and they can never restore that person's family to what it was before their crime. They must be willing to make amends and do whatever is necessary, whether it's to move to another town or stay out of their way forever.

Thank you for taking the time. I believe you have captured the essence of Christianity, as applies to this conversation. I think both of you are right, you read the words and interpret them as part of the overall sense of the book you are reading- the Bible, while sadie takes a more literal interpretation of only the words she reads from the same book. Clearly broad interpretations such as these must come from my own belief system, which seem to reflect some of both your beliefs. I believe in decency, humanity, dignity, and compassion. These beliefs are represented in all major religions, unfortunately the corruption of the various religious systems by man causes me to eschew all church (by whatever name you choose) systems and practice my beliefs privately. Tolerance and understanding are also common to all major religions. One of the greatest shames on the human race are the tremendous number of death caused by religious intolerance. Again caused by someones interpretation of their religious Book.
I have 2 sons who survived their teen years. They loved their beach parties, in coastal Fla. This story and others like it put a knife right through my heart - it could just as well have been mine. Maybe I choose to look for good in people, but I still think the info in the article, as presented, tells of a party, an accident, and a lot of frightened kids. May God protect and shelter ALL the innocent people involved in this tragic incident.

I don't believe that God ever implied we're all Gods and I think the interpretation of "we're all individuals to make our own decisions" is completely untrue...unless you believe that altar boys or women want to be raped and that's the decision they made (just to use an example).
I totally agree with you on the way one chooses to live their life - but I was taught that by my parents and never needed a book to verify or teach me that.

realitycheck - while I agree with a lot of what you stated, I don't believe tolerance and understanding are part of all religions, as most say that if you don't believe what they believe, you aren't allowed into their glorious after-life.
karl - I see myself as no theologian, just someone who likes to discuss with people differing views and ideas, which is what a board like this is for. I have no idea what happens in any after-life myself, but was simply discussing this religion's version of it.
If someone wished God's blessings upon me, I would understand it comes from the heart of their beliefs and therefore their heart. This, regardless of weather it Christ's, Allah's, Buddha's, or whichever God's blessing was invoked. I would appreciate the wish, not criticize it because it came from a different religion than I embrace.
Perhaps this understanding comes from having a firm, considered belief system.
While I completely understand that realitycheck, a large portion of the time people are wishing God's blessing after some tragedy that, let's be realistic, if God wanted to 'bless' the person, He wouldn't have let it happen.
I never give people the stink-eye or say "no thanks" or anything like that when they say something like that directly to me - like you, I appreciate that it comes from the person's heart, but posting it on a messageboard like this is not the same to me as saying it directly to a person.

Sorry about the she. I agree with your response. My investigations of the major religions - only, have been cursory at best (curiosity is what do). While I think you are correct in the part addressed to me, you will still find they pay homage to tolerance and understanding. These kind of conflicts are part and parcel of many religions. Hence my choice not to follow any organized religion.

Regardless of where the suspects get the idea for the crime, I don't think it's the media's fault that they decided to carry out the crime. It takes another level of thinking to reach that point.

Great God in Heaven. Absolutely horrible. We put up with a degenerated and lawless society, and then more things like this happen. So many homeless youths on the street, a missing 14 year old girl isn't even noticed; gangs and thugs running wild because we don't put and keep them in prison; too many young thugs -- we tolerate and support young teens having kids that don't get a proper upbringing -- creates a terrible maladjusted underclass with no proper feelings.

I was thinking that they couldn't find her because she got pulled out in the tide as she may have become tangled in her burning clothing while in the water, became incoherent in the cold, and with the awful pain burns cause, succumbed to the depths... she then later washed up on the beach.. her friends probably tried like heck to find her, but the ocean is pretty intimidating at night.. poor child. This seems to make sense as she had burns on her hands and legs.. she wasn't "doused in gas.." as so many sick moron commenter's want to believe.. sad. Just a baby...

No where in the article did it even suggest that she was doused with kerosene, and the burns are consistent with perhaps having stood too close to the bonfire and then trying to put out the flames herself. It's so sad and my heart broke when I read about her.

I am confused? Wasn't this a young girl victim found naked, burned and tossed on the beach? Are we thinking she was suicidal? What she stripped and set herself on fire? Is that the theory? What is wrong with these idiots, investigate it as a murder, find the guilty parties, toss kerosene on them, and set them on fire. If they survive, hang them.
Until they know the cause and manner of death, they don't know what evidence to look for. If you read the NY Post article linked in the comments above (as the NBC article is bereft of details) you will see the statement from the initial examination that the burns were only on the extremities and were not sufficient to cause death, and there was no other visible trauma (ie. GSW, stab wound, bruises etc.).
The scenario you describe sarcastically is actually possible, she may have caught on fire accidentally, by her own hands, or at the hands of an attacker and gone into the surf to try to extinguish the flames and drowned. IDK if you have any experience try to start a bonfire with driftwood on a beach, but unless Les Stroud or Bear Grills is with you, kerosine or lighter fluid is pretty much the only way to get a fire started. This very well could have been he result of a terrible accident and the others present were too afraid to report it. That, of course, does not EXCUSE their possible responsibility, but it might explain it.
Until the ME identifies the cause of death the police are left to questioning people who may have known the victim and trying to draw conclusions from the evidence at the scene - fingerprints on the beer can for example. Crimes and suspicions death cases are not typically solved overnight or in news site comments columns. Maybe the ME and the Police know a little bit more about how to handle and investigation than you or I.
In any case, my heart goes out to the victim's family. No matter how it happened they lost a large part of their lives.

RealityCheck, Very well spoken and I enjoy reading your posts. I also share; I believe, the same views on religion. In my opinion most organized religion seems to be very cult like. And followers often times seem to posses a mindset representative of being 'programmed'. Anyone not agreeing with this statement that is fine but I would challenge you to the following. Approach someone that is strongly religious. Question them about their religion and even hint at the fact that maybe they are wrong, or question "Well how do you know"; they become very defensive very quickly.

Please read the article in its entirety. The girl was not doused with kerosene. The burns were to her hands, arms and legs only, and may have been the result of her trying to put out the flames herself.

Probably not because rapes and murders are committed against women because of hatred and control issues that men have. Prostitutes can assist with sex, but not with psychos desire to torture and kill women.
Just thinking: a number of years ago, study was done on overcrowding with rat populations. They were fed, given good living space and allowed to multiply. As the population came up, started getting vicious, feral behavior - just like in the human population. Is it maybe nature's ultimate fall back provision for population control? If we overcome disease, then nature can kick in with natural disasters, global warming, and vicious murders? Great thing to look forward to!
There was a lot of info in that study. Overcrowding is definitely something to be concerned about. We will have to develop and "old-school" politeness system (like Leave it to Beaver) if we are to have so many people living together in such proximity. My fear is that all this self-indulgent, self-centered, ego-driven T.V. programming will result in something quite different. Humans can be programmed to a degree, and we are currently letting FOX and others do that for us. Imagine if parents we able to be ultra-involved with their kids, and taught them about life, rather than working to exhaustion to make ends meet. As a society, we are capable of so much more than this current state of mediocrity.
I agree on the teaching of manners - but I disagree on the "Fox and others" - to me, the real influence is Hollywood and the music machine. Look at the behavior of the supposed "stars" - would you want your children to pattern themselves after the freaks on reality shows? How about the latest spat between Mariah Carey and Nicky Minaj - supposedly stars acting like gutter trash (and Minaj saying she has to preserve her "street creds" and threaten someone. Then thugball games - footbrawl and basketbrawl - half of the players have police records. These are what our young people are being trained by - the people that they think are stars!

Look up Thomas Malthus. Not sure about the spelling. In general he argued that as populations increase geometrically, resources can't keep up and results in war, famine, pestilence and disease. My condolences to this girls family and friends. I'm sure they will find out what happened. Hopefully, whoever is responsible will be caught and punished to the full extent of the law. As a parent, this is one of my worst nightmares, that something like this could happen.
