ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The leader of an anti-government militia in Alaska who proclaimed that "God's law" trumps "man's law" was sentenced on Tuesday to nearly 26 years in prison for a plot to kill government employees he portrayed as his enemies.
Schaeffer Cox, the 28-year-old leader of the Alaska Peacekeepers Militia and a onetime candidate for the Alaska House of Representatives, apologized through tears for his actions.
"Well, I put myself here, with my own words, and I feel horrible about that, and I hurt my family, and that's who's really paying, and I feel horrible about that," he said at a hearing in federal court in Anchorage.
"I put a lot of people in fear by the things I said and the crazy stuff that was coming out of my mouth," he said.
Cox was convicted last summer of conspiring to murder federal and state government officials, including judges and law enforcement agents, soliciting others to commit murder and related weapons charges.
Evidence included a cache of illegal weapons, detailed lists of potential targets, testimony of government informants and tape recordings of speeches and meetings, some made secretly.
During the trial, Cox spent two days on the witness stand, at times confidently telling the jury his philosophy and likening himself to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi.
He testified that he sincerely believed government agents were planning to kill him and that he was justified in taking steps to defend his family against the police.
'Master manipulator'
But at Tuesday's sentencing, Cox disavowed many of those stances. He and his attorney cited a post-trial psychological evaluation that concluded Cox was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, delusions and a paranoid personality disorder.
U.S. District Court Judge Robert Bryan, who imposed the sentence, said he agreed Cox probably was mentally ill but said that did not excuse his actions.
"I want to note that he has never been so ill as to not be able to have followers and convince people to follow him," Bryan said. The 310-month sentence falls well short of the life term Cox could have received.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Skrocki, who described Cox as a "master manipulator," said he was "comfortable" with the sentence, even though prosecutors had been seeking 35 years.
Election, economy spark growth of militias
"Our view of what Mr. Cox said to the court is thoroughly contradicted by his actions," Skrocki told reporters after the sentencing hearing, noting those actions included putting longtime family friends "on a hit list."
Cox's sentence was the same as that imposed on Monday on one of his followers, Fairbanks-area resident Lonnie Vernon, who was convicted of murder conspiracy and weapons charges. Vernon's 66-year-old wife Karen, got 12 years for her role in the plot.
A fourth defendant, Coleman Barney, 38, was sentenced in September to five years in prison for weapons charges.

Guess Gods law didnt triumph over mans law this time.
This is the kind of people that have to have these AR-15's. I remember when the Michigan Militia was busted when they plotted to kill State Troopers and others. We all know these people aren't right in the head. But these are the sick bastards that talk the uneducated people into following them. They set around and lesson to Shen Hanaity, Rush L. Glen Beck. They go to Gun shows and buy ar-15's and 100 thousand rounds or more, and start plotting against the Government.
I say its time we not only change the second Amendment, but the first also. We have to stop people like Rush L, Glen B, and Shawn H. and any others like them. That Wacko Preacher in Fl. that keeps trying to burn the Koran. He is just causing trouble, while we have our people in harms way. We carry freedom of speech to far, We carry the second amendment to far. Free speech don't mean you can say anything you want. In my humble opinion Burning the American Flag should outlawed. I think when Rush calls a women a Whore because she wants Birth control, well He should be made to pay. And for that matter, Where does a convicted drug smuggler get off talking about anyone. This Guy went out of this Country to buy drugs and then gets busted bring those drugs back to America. Where does he get off. And how can these rednecks that have to stop work every day to set and lesson to this nut case. Its time for the FCC to come down on these people hard. Its time for the Supreme Court to stand up for the American people for a change. Rush, Glen, Shawn, have all done much the same things this guy in Alaska was talking about. Less see those scumbags in jail.
chuck, I definitely agree!!! What's really sickening to me is that I live in Missouri, the state that wants to put a bust of Limbaugh in the state Hall of Fame. Disgusting!!!
I fully agree that dangerous weapons should be kept out of the hands of ignorant people. Lets start with your keyboard.
Denver Bill 2 - Love the comment! Have read it twice and am nearly laughing out loud!
@chuck-2111043
If it was not for the First Amendment, being protected by the Second Amendment, YOU "chuck-2111043" would not have the ability to post inane, ignorant, slanderous statements like you have.
Please turn off your computer and return to the padded room from whence you came.
chucky...did you forget your meds this morning? people like you are scary...very scary.
Chuck...... the amount of ignorance in one post of ranting astounds me. One might confuse you for one of these "rednecks" you refer to. Only an Idiot would even suggest getting rid of the first amendment, hell they might lock you up then for crimes against spelling and basic grammer if that were the case. I celebrate the fact that people Beck and company as well as many of the liberal counterparts can rage their thoughts.
Allie. As long as the bust of Rush includes a bottle filled with Oxycodone and is "Viagra blue", I wouldn't mind it!
We should honor known drug addicts and media whores!
I am on a popular truck blog, and these types of people are everywhere.
I was just reading one of the "they're taking our guns" threads and they're all talking about how some sheriff said the federal government will declare martial law in North Carolina in the next couple months, and how they're "buying like there's no tomorrow".
There's a certain portion of the public that will believe anything if you spoon fed it to them (see Faux News audience), but the ironic thing is, THEY are the ones that see themselves as superior, as "in the know", like they know something the rest of us dont. When, in reality, Jimmy Bob is looking for something, anything to help him escape the reality that he works in the tires section of AutoZone and he's a got a fat wife and no money.
There is an easy test of insanity.
Can you complete the sentence: "I need an assault weapon because . . . . . . ."?
If you had no trouble completing the sentence, the results are conclusive. You are I-N-S-A-N-E.
Of course, there are exceptions. You could be simply seditious or a terrorist. In either case, I'd suggest the judge send you to GITMO and lose the paperwork. If you are a member of the National Rats Association, then feel free to rage and foam at the mouth. Your fears, your anger, your rage are to be expected of the senile and early alzheimers victims.
Chuck: I agree with some of what you say, and the reason they don't put those guys you talk about in jail is because they have too much money, and you know wealthy people don't go to jail in this country.
He isn't alone in his mentality. Read news stories about wanting to have assault rifles limited to use by the police and the military for example, and you'll read paranoid, fearful comments left by people with screen names like "Shooter" or "Patriot", stating that they have the right to own the exact, same weapons that the military does. They don't trust our government, soldiers or police. They stockpile weapons to fend of a "police state" or a takeover by liberals and commies. Morons who live in bunkers, real or otherwise, aren't patriots or even good citizens. They - like religious fanatics - WANT society to fail, as it will justify their reason for being.
Easy there,Chuck. Next thing you know, you'll be buying an AK-15 and calling yourself a sovereign nation.
I am fully supportive of all gun and ammo buyers and owners having to prove their mental stability. I'd bet anything 50% of them would end up in mental hospitals.
I disagree with Chuck about messing with the Bill of Rights. You need to be really careful about that one. Freedom of speech, no matter how much you hate what is being said, is essential to a free people. But when hate speech is going out over the public airwaves, I think that government can refuse to license that hate speech. Let the haters find another way to publicize their lies and slanders. We shouldn't muzzle them, but neither should we subsidize them.
When it comes to hate groups like these, the government has every right to confiscate their weapons and to prevent them from acquiring those weapons. Do you really want nutcases like these to have Bushmasters? I think it is pretty obvious they aren't acquiring weapons like these for target practice or deer hunting. This is why we need limitations on the sale of these weapons. It is why sales need to be monitored and regulated. Why every such weapon needs to be registered and after sales need to be controlled with yearly registrations and any person who obtains such a weapon needs to have been thoroughly vetted for criminal background, mental health, etc. When weapons have the potential to kill large numbers of people in short periods of time, they need to be controlled.
chuck-2111043......you said:
The first and second amendments are part of our "Bill of Rights". We can differ as to how they are interpreted. That's why we have a Judicial Branch of governments (i.e. SCOTUS).
But, you should realize, when it is left to the (dynamic) majority to decide what speech should be tolerated, it may not be long before it is YOUR speech that is censored. Sedition is already a crime (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_Act).
We (most Democrats) don't believe it is either wise nor necessary for ordinary citizens to possess weapons of war (i.e. assault rifles, large (>10) magazines, armor-piercing bullets, hand grenades, etc.). But, most of us fully support our rights to speak our minds (even and especially when that speech is unpopular) and own reasonable firearms for legitimate protection and sport.
In other words: chuck-2111043 does NOT speak for most Democrats.
Bill Austin, question for you, would you be OK with me owning a Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle?
@Jeffy-boy - As long as your using it stock with the 5 shot capacity sure. Now if your point is that you turned yours into the equivalent of an AR-15, then no.
I agree upChuck, you should have your rights taken away because I do not like what you have to say too. You are spreading hate through your anti-conservative speech and should be silenced. YOU SEE this game can be played on both sides and then NO ONE has free speech. Go live in communist whatever country you want and see what anti free-speech really means. Be careful what you wish for.
Isn't this the same group of "Patriots" that Todd Palin wanted to be a big part of ?
Funny how the so-called conservatives want their rights protected, but want anyone who disagrees with them shut down. Rush and Glen are on the forefront of that.
So, Chuck, while I may not totally agree with you, I understand your frustration. You, as well the people who jumped on you above, have a right to voice your opinion. Especially the knee-jerk who told you to leave the country. That seems to be the main stanza of the small-minded; if you don't want to live the way the we, the cons, want you to live, then leave the country!
YOU people love playing that card, don't you! If someone doesn't sing along to your little tune, you just pile right on. So be my guest. I'll just laugh. Because you applaud the militia idiots who would turn this country into a blood bath. Because they and you know God's law and you will interpret for the rest of us to adhere to. You (collectively) love calling people libtards and other denigrations as if you were bullies on the playground.
I've been watching for the last five years how YOU were the ones to lower the playing field in terms of discourse. Some liberals have followed your unfortunate way of communicating. I wish they hadn't. But being as it's game on, bring it. Every time you insult me, I will smile. Because without a doubt, I, and other like me, know what you are.
Looks like Chuck has been "silenced" by those who don't agree with his right of free speech.
Condemning our own actions, anyone?
as an Independent, I don't have a problem with people owning guns, however nowhere in the 2nd ammendment does it say what guns you have the right to own. Hunters feel free to have your guns to go hunting. I have friends who shoot in competitions and they have a vast array of different guns.
However as Bill-Austin so brilliantly stated before you buy your assault weapon answer this question.
Can you complete the sentence: "I need an assault weapon because . . . . . . ."?
now there are acceptable answers to this question however they are very few and start with "I am in the US Army/ US Marines etc"
Now as for Chuck. I hate what Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh say, but I will defend with my life, their right to spew their brand of insanity, until the moment they cry "fire" in a crowded room.
Freedom of speech is not absolute and so neither should the right to bare arms.
What a shame that we have to feed this scum bag for all those years and let him have a comfortable life in prison! There should be better solution similar to the things he advocated.
Freedom of Speech does not mean freedom not to have your comment collapsed in an internet comment forum. Lili, you may rock, but you don't have a clue how our first amendment in the Bill of Rights works.
Nine days into the New Year and the NRA's Wayne La Pierre remains the anti-Christ.
As for the Alaska nutcases, good riddance.
@BillAustin,
Can you complete the sentence: "I need an assault weapon because . . . . . . ."?
When you say "why do I need one", I'm forced to ask "why can't I HAVE one?" Is it because in your mind you fear that people will only use "assault" weapons to kill other people? Gee, that is a rather paranoid viewpoint, isn't it? Do you also believe that only Military/LE should have access to firearms? Like the cop in Jersey who 'misplaced' his loaded service weapon? As an instructor, I have never 'misplaced', 'accidently discharged' or otherwise exhibited irresponsible behaviors while in possession of my sidearm or any other weapon. That's just called common sense. And before y'all start squawking about the usual nonsense, I have instructed Mil/LE in CQB and the use of 'compliance tactics'. I don't need a firearm to be 'effective' in a combat situation. Judging from your post, it seems that you are the one who has potential 'fears'/'rage'/'anger' issues regarding this matter. Really Bill???? You would 'suggest' that the judge send people to Gitmo and lose the paperwork??? REALLY??? What....are we now tweaking the laws to serve our own delusional purposes? You might want to stand down and think about all that for a second before continuing your tirades against our Constitutionally protected FREEDOMS. Strip away one Amendment and the rest will fall soon after. Unless, of course, that is exactly what you want. Hmmm.
@Bob Freebird
No, our Bill of Rights works when it agrees with your point of view. We know that.
Lol! Okay, see, now I can empathize!
Anyway, to the TOPIC of the article, yes, this guy plotted to kill even long time friends. Nice. Talk about needing to be put away for a long period of time. Sheesh.
Now, this is how you have a "WELL REGULATED militia."
BTW, the man was treated for mental issues because he was "suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, delusions and a paranoid personality disorder." Sounds like a typical Tea Party member to me.
There is zero data to support an assault weapons ban if your trying to limit deaths due to gun violence. Now if that is not the intention what is?
@ Bill
Please define "assault weapon," or explain what type of weapon(s) could not be used in the act of assault.
The term "assault rifle" is as insipid in its etymology. A single-shot, bolt action .22 rimfire rifle could be used to assault someone. Hey, a .22 round is what killed Bobby Kennedy, so I'd say the term is as redundant and superfluous as it is inane. The term, "assault rife," is not defined and it was first coined by anti-gun nuts who think 1) we do not need to defend our freedom from tyranny or ourselves from crime, and 2) anyone who needs a gun is a nut case.
It's hilarious to read an assault weapon supporter use the word, "paranoid." Isn't that the primary justification for you and your loser friends to run into the hills clutching your weapons? As to the 2nd amendment right to a well regulated militia? Feel free to buy all the muskets the farmers/tradesman of the 18th century constitution guaranteed to you. If you morons actually believe that these gentleman patriots could envision our current armaments, then your argument demands the right to have an effective militia. Doesn't that require artillery, tanks, maybe that field nuclear weapon? Yeah? I thought so . . . you're now ready to expand your demands. You're I-N-S-A-N-E.
Good riddance to that nutjob. Crazy people like him are the bane of the militia movement.
Max, the "militia movement," as you put it, is a fringe group.
Please tell me you are not prejudicial in your assessment of all gun owners.
We feel much the same way as you do about these nuts, as well as nuts of any kind, including the wild-eyed and raging knee-jerk antigun idiots.
I own quite a few guns, I served in the military, and I see nothing wrong with citizen militia groups acting within the law. Am I biased in the gun debate? Certainly, everybody is biased to some degree, but I try to be as objective and practical as I can.
Max^108: Why do you own "quite a few guns" ?
Are you afraid someone is going to take them away, that someone will attack you, that someone doesn't like you?
Sounds pretty paranoid to me.
Maybe you just like to kill. Maybe you want to be prepared to kill someone. Are you ready to kill someone. Will you kill someone if given the opportunity. Sounds pretty insane to me.
We need to keep guns out of the hands of the insane (like you appear to be.)
@Bill,
It's hilarious to read an assault weapon supporter use the word, "paranoid." Isn't that the primary justification for you and your loser friends to run into the hills clutching your weapons?
Sir, if you are referring to my use of the word 'paranoid' it was in direct reference to your viewpoint. And no, I am not an 'assault weapons supporter' but rather a supporter and defender of the Constitution of the United States. Hence, the name AmericanDefender. Only the truly paranoid would bring into this debate the terms artillery, tanks and field nukes. What I find to be more hilarious, as well as pathetic, is that you meander through life with blinders on....failing to grasp the bigger picture and only focusing on what is in your exceptionally limited field of view (as long as it goes hand in hand with your preconceptions of how the Law should be). Also, perhaps you can answer the question put forth brillantly in post 1.32......what do YOU define as an 'assault weapon'? Being skilled in the use of most weapons of the Martial Era, would you also demand that my katana be deemed and banned as an 'assault weapon'? Or my hands? Perhaps.....your mouth, as well? Or would that infringe upon YOUR Constitutionally protected First Amendment Rights?
I just want to know exactly what "anti gun people" means. It seems anyone who wants to look at potential gun law changes automatically gets labeled as "anti gun." To me, anti gun would imply people are against having guns 100% when in reality that's not the case. Even though the tin foil hat movement continues to think the current administration actually is repealing the 2nd amendment, which would never happen, nor would many actually support that. IF "assault weapons" were banned, that's not taking away your 2nd amendment rights. Nowhere does it state you are to have access to unlimited types of weapons. By the logic that people have in implying a ban on one weapon or the other takes away their rights, people should be allowed any type of weapon they want, shouldn't they? I should be allowed to have RPG's, mortars, anti aircraft artillery, all set up in my yard, shouldn't I? I mean people keep saying they need these weapons to protect against this government military takeover they think is going to happen. Your little AR15 won't do you any good in that scenario anyway.
So yes, the question of whether someone NEEDS an AR15 (or similar) is valid. Because no one needs one. Not that it hasn't happened but I haven't heard of many situations where people shot an intruder with an AR15. Generally it's a handgun, or shotgun. Reasonable weapons if you're going to claim you want it for self defense. Not saying they should be banned because that probably wouldn't make much of a difference, but its stupid that people act like they NEED them. No. They just WANT them. Which is fine. We all have things we want. I have a lifted truck I like to take off road. Do I NEED the lift? Nope, but it's part of a hobby. If someone said I legally couldn't have said lift on the road, I don't really see how that would be taking my rights away lol.
I'm all for having your handguns or shotguns for self defense, your hunting rifles, whatever. What I find most ironic is the "pro gun" people who agree you need to keep the guns away from the crazy people because that's the problem seem to be some of the people with the more crazier views. I've heard numerous people point to the holocaust and this is why people need to be armed to the teeth. Really? Lets re-evaluate who the crazy people are, cause it's obvious there are droves of them who legally have guns and are preparing for some impending government run war on the people.
Ok, the originlal "right to bear arms" was written about a zillion years ago. When people had to protect themselves, from 1) The French 2) The British and 3) some rogue Native Americans that were not really happy that they were losing their land, after the French and the British armed them. Up to that point, it was pretty much bows and arrows.
Now every happy drugged out radical, living in the woods, with his loaded guns and his two-holer back in the woods, considers it his right--to bear arms. I would be happier and feel safer if there was an amendment that also specified "Right to use your brain" and then fine people for being f.....g stupid! Now there is a law that would keep any police force busy!!! Yeah,"I am a man, because I carry an assault weapon" Party on testosterone buddies!
Lili, show me where Chuck's right of free speech has been curtailed. Please provide sources. I'll be waiting. If what you say is true, then surely there is precedent from a court case.
Bob
I think you're focusing on Lilirocks while ignoring many other's comments right here.
It used to be that in order to publish your opinions for millions to read required an education and impressing some important people. Now practically any illiterate fool can do so while drinking beer and eating chips in front of the keyboard. In fact, what we're all doing here in these threads is publishing our views and opinions.
It might be your own opinion that a court of law might be required to determine a criminal violation of the 1st amendment, but I think you're wrong. There is a valuable human trait called common sense that citizens of this country apply to defend our Bill of Rights without any Court of Law telling us to do it.
@dirp - anybody who owns a few guns is paranoid? Dude... you are so clueless... I have a couple of guns passed down to me from my father, a few for hunting (you would have no clue why, but that is obvious to any hunter), and a few for target practice which is my hobby. I have a concealed carry permit but I hardly ever carry a gun. It is people like you speaking totally uninformed garbage that make rednecks nervous and afraid for their gun rights.
Ever watch Doomsday Preppers, when they have the militia nuts on there?
those ones scare me the most. why?
because they run around vast stretches of america, like they own all of it (even though MOST of it is govt land) bitching about the govt, and salivating at the day when society collapses and they can shoot and kill at random and at will, all under the auspices of "I was defending myself, yeah, thats it".
of course militia's hate the govt, it's the ONLY THING that prevents them from being the Serial Killers they all really want to be.
Well said Jessica!
But only "Man's Law" can quickly give you the ass-kicking and execution you so richly deserve...
Say "Hello" to dear Timmy for us when your time comes. Ask him what he thinks about how things turned out and the lack of whatever he though he'd be starting.
McVeighed in the end as a sample of the pointless destruction and the pointless Wackotomy that lead to it.
All the way back up there by the top collapsed comment Chuck is wondering why so many people would disagree with him... Especially being the eloquent wordsmith he is one would think people would be following him and letting him be our grand leader.. All hail Chuck... What was the last grade you actually finished Chuck?
Ewent #1.14:
If the day ever comes where we have the ability to find out, I will take your bet! I'll put all the money I have on it. You have SUCH a deluded view of the average firearm owner.
Good riddance, the constitution guarantees free speech but only to a point. And calling for the murder of federal employees is well beyond that point. We have a fringe in this country that think they are above the law, this azz clown has 27 years to re-think his life's philosophy.
The US government is not to be trusted. Free Bradley Manning. On the other hand, to think you can fight them with guns when they have the largest army in the world is total lunacy. (e.g., Alex Jones)
A real tough guy. What an ignorant bully.
I get such a kick out of these people that say the government cannot be trusted! 200+ years after "The" revolution (which obviously coloured the attitudes of folks from that time) and nothing yet! I'm glad you mentioned Alex Jones, indigena, because that man is dangerous-nuts! Anyway, these so-called government conspiracies have been going on for decades, under different administrations and across the political spectrum, yet everyone is so "on the bus" that there have been no credible leaks or evidence of any kind of grand conspiracy to strip Americans of their freedoms and plug them into the New World Order. The crap my neighbor says is downright scary (he's a Alex Jones disciple). Why would anyone want to live their life in such fear? Theirs are really self-fulfilling prophesies, because they'll do like these nuts in Alaska and start to plot their course for "taking back America." They'll either wind up in jail or die in a hail of bullets after the authorities get involved to neutralize the threat these nuts pose to the general public. Then the blow-hards on the radio can spin it and start the chorus of I-told-you-so's, which will serve to trigger more extremism.
Exactly. The government can't even find it's own ass half the time, how the hell would they be able to pull off these massive conspiracies that these loons think up.
So the Angry White Middle Age fat gut males in the US suffering from post Daycare Trauma are at it again. Do any of you birdbrains ever get it? YOU ARE the government. And God help us all that you are. Your brand of citizenship we can do without. All you do all day long is bitch and criticize. How about get a life? A real one that requires a bit of sweat for a change? Or are your computer keyboards glued to your fingers for life?
Young men of middle age who hate the government are largely overindulged Daycare brats who want their 10 seconds of fame and will stoop as low as they can to be the next flash in the pan.
Cox will now rue the day his elephant mouth overloaded his hummingbird ass. All Cox did was show the world how totally "ignernt" and what a loser he really is. Methinks that NRA BS militia has gone way too far. It's managed to implant ideas in some men's heads that they will take over the country. Before or after the mothers in this country get fed up enough to send these bois a message they won't like?
I don't know who raised these Middle Aged brats but it's obvious parenting wasn't one of their stellar skills. When you turn out an angry lunatic armed to the teeth, your parenting skills are BS.
Interesting how you radical libs who are always screaming about not stereotyping others are all to quick to try and paint a broad picture when it comes to gun owners. Your ignorance is only superceded by your media induced hatred of inanimate objects. Gun owners are a diverse and massive group that come from all walks of life. This psychotic fool just happened to own firearms--many of which he possessed illegally. Should we assume that everyone who owns an automobile is a drunken jackass on the verge of plowing into oncoming traffic? Hypocrisy at its liberal finest.
I think everyone is missing the key points.
Interesting how some people are always calling others "radical libs", when they don't like their opinion.
Is it just me - honestly, the govt cant be trusted. We dont need crazy conspiracy theories to prove it, we have 200 + years of historical data that proves it. It's entirely likely the craziest of the crazy conspiracy theories arent even remotely possible...but some stuff that most people would say "thats just crazy, OUR govt would never do that" have absolutely no clue what they're talking about.
Our govt does some really awful stuff, and we generally dont learn about it for 30-50 years after the fact.
Knowing what we know today about what happened in the past, all we have to do is use a little imagination to presume what horrific things are happening today. It's naive to assume they arent doing anything horrific, our GOVT is like all others - operated by people who do as they wish, not as they should.
Humans are flawed, therefore, GOVT always will be to.
Our Ego, Pride and Greed always do us in...but what really freaks me out, is the paranoia that exists in our military.
What this guy displayed is NOTHING compared to what our military thinks and believes about other nations, and frankly, it's paranoia cycling paranoia...nothing more and nothing less.
We think North Korea, as impoverished and inept as they truly are can and will wipe us out if they develope a nuke. Why do you think they want a nuke? Because we are the only recent nation to attempt to invade and occupy them (unsuccessfully I might add)...I think if anything THEIR paranoia is justified, as we continue to invade and occupy nations that DO NOT have nukes.
You'll noticed, we merely threaten the ones that do - but would never do what we did in Iraq or Afghanistan - to a nation like Iran or Pakistan.
Why?
Because Nukes are equalizers...and anyone who advocates for gun ownership to "equalize the bad guys" knows im 100% right.
Many who support owning guns BELIEVE that if they have guns, and the bad guys know it, they wont break into THEIR HOME - and IF THEY DO, THEY'LL BE KILLED INSTANTLY.
So, why dont we invade nations with nukes? Because we COULD be killed instantly...with one push of a button.
Reality is creepy. Whoever said Ignorance is Bliss, is absolutely right.
And it was a republican president who initiated 2 wars and vastly increased the governments right of surveillance, monitoring and detention of citizens after 9-11. It's usually conservatives as the loudest voice against government over reach but usually a conservative leader that over reaches the most. No president in history has done more to limit our privacy and liberty than Bush. If this had happened in California can you imagine the hatred they would have spewed?. But it happens in Texas, the reddest state in the union and they limit bashing to this policy never the state or it's government.
There is that saying, just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean someone isn't out to get you. Certainly plotting to murder is pushing the line.Running around screaming the sky is falling does tend to attract attention. When it comes to God's laws he must have forgotten we are commanded to obey the laws of the land. Remember, render unto Caesar the things of Caesar, and unto God, the things of God.
Oops, guess he forgot that part. If your whole idea is to be prepared for a government take over, it probably is best NOT to draw too much attention to oneself. Not only that, but exactly how did he expect to success, I mean practically single-handily. Does the phrase, Remember the Alamo come to mind anyone? That didn't turn out very well for those folks. And most of America was backing those fine folks afterward. Don't think the country will come running to demand this fella get out of prison, huh? Me neither.
Windancersong-1494878
Mornin Windancersong-1494878...
I fully concur. Once more than one person knows the "secret", it's no longer a secret!! I guess he never learned that one.
Oh... as far as the Alamo goes, unfortunately, many Americans were backing those folks AFTER the Alamo fell and Sam Houston got Santa Anna. Before the battle was another story. America didn't want to get involved. That's why Davey Crockett, Conrgessional Representative from Tennessee noted on the floor of the house after trying unsuccessfully to get America involved, "I will go to TEXAS, you may all go to hell."
And now Texas is telling the rest of the country to go to hell and we ignore their pathetic BS because Texas needs the other 49 states.
@ XDm9mm
Close but no cigar. Davey Crockett said that famous phrase to his constituents in West Tennessee while campaigning. Only reason I know that is I'm a proud West Tennesseean. Remember The Alamo!
@ ewent
Are you physically capable of writing something that isn't deliberately inflammatory. Do you get on here and just troll for fun? Or do you truly believe your extreme viewpoint is 100% correct? Because you sound just as crazy as the extreme Far Right Republicans you rail against.
Ewent has a special hatred for Texas but she never explains why, she just makes stuff up as she goes along. I've called her on her numerous innacuracies many times, and yet she never says anything else, she just goes on to the next article and spews the same things she's already been debunked on before.
I try to imagine her sitting at her keyboard frothing at the mouth while typing out all the wild weird things she says.
"You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas" lol I have the t-shirt, one of my very favorite quotes of all time. Rates right up there with Ben Franklin's "God created beer because he loves us and wants us to be happy."
It's just too bad they didn't have guns at the Alamo.
Yup, wack jobs like this guy see tyranny just waiting to happen behind every bush, up every tree, around every corner. And why? Because we have a communist, Marxist, Nazi foreign born "moozlum" president who is (OMG) BLACK even. And just think, there are thousands more just like Cox. What a pathetic nation we've become!
Allie: Don't know what country you're living in, but in the U.S. we have President Obama for another four years, thank the power of the voters who have spoken loud and clear. 51% voted for this wise and patient President, born in Hawaii, reared as Christian but accepting and respecting ALL religions.
A strong heritage of Kansas White and Kenyan Black, this President displays a full plate of characteristics absent from too many people. When the furor calms and true history takes over, Prez Obama's accomplishments will be known. Never in his years has our President tooted his own horn, never. Never has our President insulted or degraded any person. That's our President Obama, a man for the world.
earthgirl, I think you misread allie's comment.
Miss Earthgirl;
PLEASE tell me you are being sarcastic, please. Or if not, did you move to Colorado or Oregon on January 1st?
Thanks dawp, earthgirl certainly DID misread my comment! earthgirl, I too think all those wonderful things about our President. Long before I knew he would ever be running for president I saw him on a tv program and told my family that if ever he ran, and I hoped he did, he'd have my vote. I'm a 70 year old white woman and I can guarantee that very few presidents in my lifetime have made me as proud as Obama has.
Allie...Unless you can prove in a court of law with a jury of your peers this president is a Muslim, you are guilty of libel. But, what is most ridiculous is how mouthy racists are these days. Your post reeks of racism.
ewent,
You're such an idiot you don't even realize that you and Allie are on the same side.
Mr. CNORTON;
SIR! Are you insinuating that by their actions/words here today that Miss Allie and Miss Ewent are acting like a couple of progressive, liberal, registered democrats?
Harley Mike,
How can I put this? "Yes". And progressive they are.... as in progressively more annoying each day.
You have to forgive ewent a little. Obviously she's not from the US and may not have a good grasp of our brand of sarcasm or irony. I say this in her defense as I think her turn of phrase is a riot most of the time.
In an article about school policy in a red state, with a republican governor and government and the birth place of the Bushs we see outrage against this directed at Obama and the federal government by some. Strange. Though I could care less about a chip in a card that tracks students because I know 95% already carry one provided by their parents in their high tech phones. Why the outrage that the school is providing the ability for someone to tap into a students card to locate them but no concern for these phones that provide the same ability? Ever since 9-11 surveillance and monitoring of us has exploded under Bush and is continuing under Obama and will likely expand further whoever is our next president.
The only thing which surprises me is that he now admits wrong doing, and expresses regret. Mentally ill people typically do not.
A person suffering from paranoid delusions is typically a prisoner of his own twisted perceptions. He does not see or hear imaginary things. But he does imagine fantastic explanations for event which most of us would dismiss as mere happenstance, if we took any note of them at all.
So, I suspect that this person was not truly a sufferer of a true psychosis, and is just an angry, willful person bent on striking out at the "evil government", which forces him to register his car, pay taxes, and drive on the right side of the road.
Oh well, 26 years in the slammer may teach him a lesson ...or not.
dman--Excellent observation. At trial it seems the last resort for violent, demagogic people is mental illness. So often just a ploy to escape well deserved punishment. I doubt he'll truly reform in prison where he may well come into contact with men willing to accept his philosophy, and continue to feed his ego. Because, in the end, this is all ego driven.
dman, he was just saying what his lawyer told him to say hoping for a lesser sentence.
joemota...so he obeys his lawyer when his ass is on the line but when it isn't, he's the one demanding obedience?
I don't think he is mentally ill. I think he is a sociopath, skilled at manipulation and power tripping all the way. He can cry or laugh as the scene demands. He would have manipulated his followers into murder while hiding in the background. This is another Jim Jones, a powerful, charismatic (to other loonytunes) life hating sociopath who will lead his followers into hell. If he isn't a good argument for controlling weapons, I don't know what is.
I agree with underemployed. Textbook case of sociopathic behavior.
The mentally ill defense should be redefined. If you've preached your intent to murder lots of people and stockpiled weapons to achieve that as this guy has nuts or not you should be locked up and never get out. Mental illness shouldn't be a defense that allows people to evade justice or carry out their insanity.. Hitler was nuts but still able to contribute to the deaths of many tens of millions of people. Don't you think most Germans would have preffered he was never let out when jailed?
I expect to see more people like this man will come up in the news this year and in the future, especially on the issue of gun control. Unfortunately this isn't the end of it.
There's always been militia people. Remember Ruby Ridge, Waco, or the KKK?
Or 1776? Or 1812?
yep hundreds of years ago...they carried black powder smooth bore muskets
And hundreds of thousands of people died by them in any given war they were used in. What's your point? They weren't dangerous? Ban AR-15's and the next guy shot with a black powder Colt will have you calling for them too. You idiots would have called for a ban on slingshots if you had lived in the time of David and Goliath.
That's like the argument about power tools, hammers and bare hands killing more than assault rifles argument so why don't we ban them. Link to one article where anyone has killed 26 in a school, wiped out entire families, killed half a dozen in a movie theater or from a university tower with a sling shot, hammer, power tool or bare hands and we'll talk. Otherwise the argument just sounds silly.
Maybe they started him on meds so he could see clearly and realized how crazy he was. If he wasn't getting meds then yeah dman, you are right.
To question authority is healthy and expected by your four fathers here in America. However, violence and terrorism is not. I am glad they gave this guy (and the others) a stiff sentence because to me he is just like Jim Jones (the cool aid massacre guy). Crazy like a fox. This is the outcome that should have happened to the Waco guys.
I am happy to see the system working this way instead of all out military strikes on crazy groups like this. It sends a clear message that the government isn't out to get you, we the people are just trying to protect ourselves from violent crazies bent on hurting people.
Kudos and great job to those involved in the investigation. This is how you save lives!
I don't think he would have killed anyone.
I for one do not want to find out. Lock him away and throw away the key.
So Alan. What did you think he was going to do. I think we need to lock many more of these people up. We should put Rush L. Shawn H and Glen B. in jail with these people, They incite People like those in Alaska and all around the Country. Trying to get these unstable people to rise up against the Government. All because we elected a Black President. I am done with this free speech, and freedom to have assault weapons.
Chuck. I was with you until you got to doing away with free speech and assult weapons. You are totally wrong about that. How many people died fighting for our rights to free speech? Dont ever give up your rights, that is the Republican Mantra. Get rid of Social Security, Get rid of Medicare, Do away with Womens rights, Raise taxes on the middle class and poor, reduce taxes on the Rich and the Super Rich. Do away with Planned parenthood. Well, NONE of that happened, Why, Because the people stood and fought for these Rights, and the Hitlers, Stalins and so on in the Republican Party LOST.
Alan- How often, after murders, do we hear people who knew the killer say, "I didn't think he would do anything like that"?
People get convicted every day for attempted murder who have only gone as far as hiring an undercover police officer to kill someone (often their spouse). It's not necessary to fire a gun and miss before you can be put in jail for attempted murder. If it was, we'd have a lot more murders.
Chuck, our veterans cemetary's are full of honorable men and women who gave their all so you have the rights the 1st and 2nd Amendment gives us. Has people stretched the limits of those amendments, I would say yes to the first, and no to the second.
And just what is wrong electing a black president? Would you be complaining if he was a member of the pukebag party? Hell, you wanted a known job killer elected as president. Yes, Mitt killed more jobs and shipped the work overseas with his Bain Capital than you can shake a stick at.
And to all past veterans, and to all serving members, THANK YOU FOR SERVING. And a HUGE THANK YOU for protecting me from some of the low informed posters posting on here.
Isn't that the same statement the father of the school shooter said after the shooting? Read almost every article where they interview a friend or relative and they almost always talk about yes, they knew he had problems but never thought he could do something like that.
Most of the militia types are paranoid schizophrenics who should not be allowed to own firearms, and in most cases belong in a nut house.
They are often afraid little boys. Afraid of EVERYTHING, including their own shadow.
Like that guy who was President before Obama
He was mainly right, except for the part about killing people. The government is out of control.
They didn't put him in jail for saying the government is out of control.
Alan. We let the government get out of control. Everyone wants to lay the blame on President Obama. The Truth is the Rep's did this to us. How is it that no one wants to talk about all the money Cheney and Little Bush spent on 2 wars. The so called Conservative Rep.s. Conservative my ass. They were the ones that run up this Debt. Giving tax breaks to the reach that weren't paid for, 2 Wars not paid for. Big give away's to big business and Drug company's and Oil company's. None of it paid for. Now the bill is due and the Rep's don't want to pay for there partying. Guess what, the Rep's what to take away from SS. Medicare and medicare. That is BS. Make the people that spent that money pay it back. Its time that the many stand up to the few. We Americans have to come together as Americans and Make this country Great again. We have to hold the people we elect accountable, We need to make them put us first not the 1% they are trying to represent. We elected you all, Not David Koch, I know he gave you tons of money, but your our Representative. We need to make sure they know that. We can turn this around with out firing a single shot.
We bitched about it when he was president chuck, now we're bitching about President Obama continuing and adding to it, it's a left AND right thing, one isn't better then the other.
Good. Another deluded piece of grey matter-challenged excrement put behind bars.
Now all we have to do is put the rest of the grey-matter challenged POS politicians in D.C. in prison and the country will be a better place.
Like every fanatic when he is looking at facing punishment for his evil his story changes and he sees the error of his ways. He would have murdered and done his best to bring war to neighbors as long as he had to take no personal risk. Take him to Syria and drop him off. If he survives it he will know what civil war really is.
Of course in the end he pussied out and went for the mental defect defense.
If ya ask me, I think ALL of these anti-government militias, the racial hater militias and the gang bangers should ALL be rounded up and sent to containment camps like the ones for the Japanese Americans interned at the start of WWII. They are FAR more deserving of such treatment that those Japanese Americans were! I dont know of any other country that would tolerate such blatant activities!
Tom, did you just advocate for a totalitarian Stalinist government? Don't misunderstand me, I think this guy's a deluded and most likely deserves his comeuppance. But militias, haters, and gang bangers are the price we pay for living in a free society and while imperfect I'll take it any day over a tyrannical government that locks people up in a gulag.
You're right, Tom. We have a slew of these types in the south part of the Lakes Region....nearly 1/3 of the folks near me fly the "Don't tread on me" flag. These freaks are part of the reason I remain well armed and keep to myself. They cause me more concern than folks that may want to just steal from me.
if only it were that easy
At least this nut case was caught before he could carry out his plans. Why are so many of these "paranoid schizophrenic" types found on the right wing of the political spectrum? Just asking?
They feel welcome there, that's why.
Mark, the pukebags make them feel welcome there also. They think they are mingling with an elite crowd. If they only knew just what kind of excretement they were mingling with. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Before meds:
"Cox was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, delusions and a paranoid personality disorder."
After meds:
"But at Tuesday's sentencing, Cox disavowed many of those stances."
See how it works folks.
You can be a nut bag all you want. You can think the government is after you all you want. Heck, you can even stockpile guns and ammo all you want, But... You CAN NOT go around threatening to kill people. I have met a few people a lot like this guy and while I am not as distrusting of the government as they are, I am not blind to what they are saying. The ONLY difference between this guy and the ones I have met is that the ones I met would never threaten people. You can see that they want to sometimes, but they know that would give the government a chance to come in and take them to jail.
Over 20 years in jail... Just for threatening people.. He should have just been paranoid and hateful in silence, that way he could still be playing with his guns and playmates in his militia.
Exactly....
This is an illegal militia per the 2nd amend and the militia acts of 1792 & 1795. The whole "militia" needs to be arrested. If they resist they should be shot. They are enemies of this nation.
I'm sure the King of England said the same thing.
Ha! I agree with both of you!
What was he thinking? The government doesn't need to be overthrown. The corrupt leadership and their support group needs to be deported to a poor socialist country of choice.
All expenses paid to Iran.
Oh Please!,
Why a poor socialist country?
Seriously, this are illegal subversive organizations. They attack the soverenty of the USA and need to be dealt with accordingly. In a representative democracy, my respresentatives speak for me, they, the "militia" do not.
Have you actually read the 2nd Amendment? A militia is not an illegal organization. King Obama may want it to be illegal. Commuting threats and jestures is illegal. His biggest crime is apparently not keeping his mouth shut and not being regulated.......whatever that is. Is there a militia application in Alaska?
As passed by the Congress:
It's a bunch of "soldier boy" wannabees trying to live out their fantasies. They are suffering from delusions of adequacy. They want to play like they are "heroes" of an action movie, while their imaginary audience is cheering them on, in their own minds.
@Oh Please, man are you so full of excretement. First off, we don't have a King, except in your low informed mind, kind of like the guy that just got his 20 some years. Yep, you might be next if da King reads your rantings.
Or are you just plain stupid? Your posts lost all creditablity after you King Obama remark. Stupid little you, trying to act like an adult. Hey OH, you mamma calling you about your meds. Better take them.
the USA isn't sovereign @!$%#... the Federal Reserve owns it as well as all the other creditors.
Your think your representatives speak for you? Either your on some good meds or your part of the problem in this country.
26 years in prison?? This is treason, he should be hung. I'd like to see it on TV though.
Treason is what the politicians in D.C. are doing to OUR country and they should be tarred and feathered in public then hung. I would like to see that on TV though.
Has the "Queen of Alaska" commented this story yet?
Doesn't Todd know this guy?
Is this the same person who put a Bullseye on Gabby Giffords
I hope so, because I did that too!
This was the group Todd Palin ran with - but then distanced himself when he had to pretend he wasn't anti-USA
Hey, Folks...
As much as I dislike Sarah Palin's so-called politics, her husband was a registered member of the Alaska Independence Party which is not at all the same as this group of loonies (although I would not be surprised to learn of cross-pollination between some members).
The attached link is a pretty good background story from a local blog (yes, I'm Alaskan).
Cheers! http://mudflats.wordpress.com/tag/todd-palin-secession/
He apparently can't differentiate betweenfantasy and reality. He should be locked up in a padded cell for life.
I suppose if I lived somewhere where I was constantly surrounded by Grizzly bears, and the kids from the Soviet Union could shoot out my windows with thier slingshots... I too would be paranoid
Typical behavior for these ideology driven nuts. They're as fanatic as can be until they're caught, then the tears flow and they're oooohhhhh so sorry. Give this man a box of klenex and send him off to prison. That's where these nuts belong.
Unfortunately, while his crimes are punishable by law, there are politicians doing the exact same things (without the physical threatening) and getting away with it, because we keep voting the idiots back in.
shut up pussy!
Timmy, little boy. What would you do with your pea shooter if the gov wanted your gun and flew a drone up your butt to get it?
If the gov. was going to fly a drone up your butt to take guns away....Barney "Butt Hole Boy" Frank would have an arsenal.....in his case, an assenal.
sad... we need people like this.
Need them for WHAT? To fill mental hospitals?
Timothy is a troll looking for a response.
