Abandoned baby's mom found dead; police chief starts drive for reward money

David Carson / St. Louis Post-Dispatch via AP

Police officers inspect a car belonging to missing woman Ebony Jackson that was found in St. Louis on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013.

A 30-year-old woman suspected of abandoning her infant son last week in an apartment building in St. Louis was found dead in the trunk of her car, prompting the police chief in a nearby town to stand on a street corner soliciting reward money for the hunt for her killer.

Ebony Jackson's 2004 Mitsubishi Galant was found around 10 a.m. Tuesday in Breckenridge Hills, about 16 miles away from St. Louis. Her car, found on the 4400 block of Elmbank Avenue, was located via GPS, and the vehicle was towed to a secure location so police could begin a thorough search.

Jackson's 3-month-old baby was discovered in the hallway of the Hickory Trace Apartment building on Friday, Jan. 4, nearly 12 miles away from where her car was found. The child was in a car seat and was in good health, police said.

Meanwhile, the police chief of Pine Lawn, about nine miles from St. Louis, began collecting money to put toward a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Jackson’s killer.

Police Chief Rickey Collins said neither he nor his department have any connection with Jackson, only that her death “rocked” the community. So he stood on a street corner beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, with the goal of collecting $5,000 by 3 p.m.

“It was an unbelievable murder that really touched a lot of hearts of the people here in St. Louis because it went from child abandonment to homicide,” Collins told NBC News. “I know Missouri is a very generous state and collecting rewards has always brought witnesses and evidence forward, so I hope to get information to bring the person forward and solve the case.”

A man from Oklahoma claiming to be the father of the baby said Jackson left with their son and headed to Missouri. That man came to St. Louis earlier this week to take a paternity test, the results of which are still pending, NBC affiliate station KSDK in St. Louis reported.

With less than an hour left of standing outside, Collins, who is on vacation until Jan. 22, said he thought he would get close to reaching his goal.

“You would think that everyone knows this woman,” Collins said. “People have been very generous, they are participating, giving thumbs up as they pass by and are very supportive of what we’re doing and why we’re doing it.”

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department did not identify a cause of death for Jackson. An autopsy will be performed, police said.

On Thursday, the Pine Lawn Police Department plans on releasing the official amount raised for the reward.

Your brain may be over-sized due to water on the brain, but obviously there is a short-circuit in your reasoning ability. No one has ever discussed taking away all guns...A total lie spread by the NRA that only those who cannot think for themselves believe, and you place more value on your gun then you would on another person's life? Hopefully there are metal bars around your OK Corral.

You don't want remove all guns from society, only the ones owned by people who don't use them for crimes. And make ammo so expensive hunters can't afford to shoot.

And it is thugs who will use guns to kill you without thinking twice who you need to protect yourself from. These people don't care about life or laws. Many would kill anyone for $1.

Autopsy? Must not be guns. Perhaps a club or fists? Whatever there will be no outrage over knives, clubs, and hammers as for rifles? Per Pittsburgh Tribune Review: “House Democrats wasted no time in the new Congress pushing legislation to tighten the nation‘s hammer and club laws. “Reps. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., and Diana DeGette, D-Colo., introduced a proposal to ban framing hammers and clubs weighing more than 1.5 pounds. “Hammer- and club-control advocates say the elimination of the heavier hammers and cudgels would help lessen the carnage in indiscriminate attacks.”

Silly? Not when one considers, as Breitbart columnist A.W.R. Hawkins did, FBI statistics that show the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outpaced the number of rifle murders between 2005 and 2011. ..

Note - Also more murders with fists than with rifles.

There is no father in this story and no further explanations as to what happened. This woman danced with the devil and was shredded to pieces. This is what you get when you get involved with drugs , and other vices . She just chose a wrong path and she payed with her life. The good news is that this was limited to only one child instead of fifteen that we would ultimately have to support.

DRAGO-1006726 - If you know so much about this woman, why didn't you come forward and tell the detectives all of this. Your comments border on a holier than thou attitude and I hope nothing of this nature happens to anyone you are close to resulting in a comment, such as yours, posted on the web about them and their life.

Considering one piece of information - she had told the father that she needed "space" and left him - this sounds like she had some other guy (or girl) in the wings but things didn't go as planned. Believe it or not, being married to the father of your child may be boring, but some of the alternates are not so good.

For say the money does go to solving the case, selfishness isn't the issue in this case! Its to bring forth anyone who knows her who wants to help her and the family out to solve the mystery of who did this horrible thing! First off if there is known to be money for this case and it will go directly to someone who helps crack the case they are more willing to pay up the money for speaking up then let this go unsolved, if they don't have any conclusive information to solve the case. Think before you point fingers and have some simplithy JOHN!

DRAGO! - This is concerning, do you honestly believe s h it happens because of every action or decision we make? Honestly! No, she might have not even known the person or done drugs, a creeper or someone had it out for her, things happen not because of fault, but because that's life, get used to it, and quit blaming everyone else for the life they don't always get to choose, maybe it was best for her to raise her child alone, happily said by a single mother, haha. But to tell you the truth, truth is we don't have complete control over our lives like we all want to believe, a car accident isn't predicted and a death IS untimely and out of our own control! Deal with that and move on with your life, this woman cant and your rude to say she had more probability in her death then the one who killed her! BAHAHAHA how does it feel now?

Interesting.... The majority of the comments I read when this story first broke were about how people thought the mother was a piece of s**t for abandoning her child and she should be shot and blah blah blah.....

New we find out she was murdered......... Hmm......... Maybe people should all just insert their foots in their mouths and keep them there until all of the facts are presented.

I'm from St. Louis and can't stand it there.... The murder rate is one of the highest in the country. It's dirty, run down and very unsafe to live.

It's even a bitch to travel through.

But as a whole, this country is really mentally sick. I'm near Kansas City and it's bad here as far as the murder rate. Everyday there's 2 to 3 shootings of innocent people just out and about. Even the Mayor was out one night in the plaza area and bullets started flying, then his own family were shooting eachother on a Sunday afternoon.

Innocent children being shoot in drive by shootings in their homes and playing in the yard.

This case is a very good reason why not to go to St. Louis! EVER........ I'd like to know why she went there and to see who? The father should know something. Unless we have a baby mamma drama thing going on.

I, visited St. Louis back in 1991 and the whole time I was there, it was nothing but sirens 24 hrs. a day! Walk outside and police having someone on the ground cuffing them.

Those that live in big cities and densly populated areas, live and act like animals! Besides this country being mentally sick! Gone WHACKO..... It's unsafe anywhere you go anymore.

Sounds like the mom might have know she and her child were in danger and did what she could in a panic to save her son. I think if asking for a reward helps find the killer than so what. Those of you so indignant should get your behinds on a bus and go help....sheesh

Let's see MOM is in the CAR trunk, dead. Baby is in the CAR seat. I do not think this mother ABANDONNED this baby, not for a minute.

You are quite the brain, aren't you? The baby was found first - so the assumption was that the baby was abandoned! Duh! They had to track down who the mother was. After they found out who the mother was, they found her dead in the trunk of her car. Now, they know the baby wasn't abandoned. Got it?

I'm taking a guess here but the mother owed money to St Louis gangsters* and that's why she returned to that city, when the hitman found out there was a child in the backseat he felt sorry for the baby. I'm not ruling out the father but usually the parent will take the child not abandon it.

                                                  * Bullet in the head and dumped in her trunk is a giveaway.
